We went to jacks family restaurant after a long drive to ST. Jacobs. I had the bagel with fruit and cream cheese and some ribs. The food was delicious. The ribs were tender and juicy and the sauce on them is amazing. The bagel was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The cream cheese was a nice addition and the fruit was pretty fresh. I was expecting more based on the reviews people told me about. Now I'm sitting in my hotel room eating chips instead of enjoying my $30 dinner. They did seat me at 745- closing at 8 after I asked if they could seat me or not. The server was rude, couldn't wait to not take my order. I ordered pretty simple- cheese burger. It was a frozen patty with no seasoning. I added mayo and salt and pepper and even an interesting looking relish. I just couldn't eat it. The potato salad is made in house, diced potatoes, good texture. No flavor. Again tried pepper and salt and the weird relish. Couldn't do it. The serving size was great- almost Texas sized. Had lunch here yesterday as their outdoor seating is now open. We had to wait about 15 minutes for a table but it was about 12:45pm when we arrived so that was expected. Service was very friendly and mostly attentive. The menu is HUGE - so it took a while to decide what to order. I would normally have Eggs Benedict for brunch, but because it was a hot day, I was craving salad. There are so many brunch dishes on the menu that they really have something for everyone here. My friend ordered the veggie skillet topped with scrambled eggs, and it was a really good portion. I had a bite and I thought it was really good. Lots of veggies in there - I almost wished I had ordered the same thing. I had the Cobb Salad, and it was almost perfect. I was disappointed that instead of fresh avocado slices, there was a spoonful of guacamole on top. Most likely, I didn't read the menu description. Anyway, it wasn't bad, it's just that I love fresh avocado. The salad comes with lots of blue cheese dressing, but you almost don't need it because of all the delicious things in it. By the time we finished eating, there was a bit of a line forming, so we quickly paid and left so others could enjoy their meal. Was swerved a very undercooked burger.sent it back .the new one arrived the patti was a quarter of the size it had the butt end of the tomatoe brown wilted lettuce. So many red onion it was hard to eat it keep slipping apart .the potatoes salad tasted like cheap mayo that's all you could taste. Most of that went back .had an ice tea.the waitress talked to the female owner and to minutes later the waitress literally slapped my bill down full price didn't even comp the ice tea. I had the Pork Souvlaki Wrap and it was very tasty, accompanied by fries and a greek salad . The portion was so generous I could not finish it. My wife had the Schnitzel on a Bun. Jack's is worth the little extra you may pay. Every meal had leftovers for us, whether it was breakfast or dinner. They accommodated many special requests (I have a list of dietary restrictions as long as my arm!) All staff were friendly and efficient. We were not allowed to sit in the dining room due to Covid restrictions, but once we are able, I would feel comfortable dining in the restaurant as they have plexiglass between tables. Went back for lunch again (was in the area again for work) and was asked if we were there for breakfast or lunch. Being that it was 11:00 am I said we'd take both menus and take a look. By the time we were all ready to order off the breakfast menu (we had to wait a bit for another diner to meet us), our waitress told us that we were no longer allowed to order off the breakfast menu. When I told her we were given a menu and a choice when we walked in, she said "that was then". Well now. So on two seperate occasions I've tried to order breakfast, and twice I've been denied. No leniency either time. And what's worse, this time---no apology. Not even a "Sorry about that!" or even "Let me see...". Nothing. The worst waitress experience I've EVER had. I even conciously noticed if she ever said "please or thank you" and the ONLY time she said thank you, was when I handed her back the visa machine. Thinking back, I should have not tipped. GRRRRR. We were seated promptly, and out party of five got one of the huge wrap around tables. The waitress was friendly enough and our orders were taken fast enough. The menu is fairly exhaustive. I had the classic reuben. It had a lot of smoked meat, a little more sauerkraut would have been nice, but overall it was ok. Two of my three kids had the kids pizza. The kids pizza is about the size of a small pizza at most pizza joints. The dough was freshly made, and it was smothered in cheese. I loved the piece that my daughter let me steal from her. My third kid had the spaghetti, she liked it, but she felt the portion size was too big for her. She told us there was no way she was going to finish it. Overall the meal was average on the adult meals, and above average for the kids. The restaurant was clean, well put together, and we had a good server. Old fashioned in the worst way. A brown thick sludge is what they bring me when I order balsamic with my salad. Chicken so dry it requires special attention when eating so as to avoid friction burns on your tongue. The club sandwich is triple decker (1987 is back!!!) and completely untenable as a structure. The salad is wilted. The veggies clearly from a grocery store bag. No prep work in THIS kitchen. My wife gets bagel with lox. No capers in the place. Hmm... they serve it as a sandwich. That's weird. Four slices of smoked salmon and two huge servings of cream cheese on one half of the bagel and lettuce and tomato on the other. We're left to redistribute the fillings ourselves. Pitiful. The caesar salad she got tasted of mostly canola oil. So, nothing. Just a gross salad. In general, if we were able to walk today we'd have never eaten here. Were there for supper one night with my wife and I. My wife ordered steak and eggs home fries tost. She wanted breakfast for supper and she said it was awesome. Mistake was medium beautiful well marble piece of meat no Gristle and no fat and a very tasty and a very tender steak. I ordered a Montreal smoked meat on toasted rye bread and it came with fries gravy on the side will side of dill pickles. And my meal was absolutely out of this world fantastic. Service was fast and friendly and the food was outstanding. And the portion sizes are huge for the hearty appetite. I go here time and time again. The food quality is above average. The portions are very large. Despite being in the far North end of Waterloo away from the students, this place is always packed during mealtimes. Try a weekday lunch, and you'll see. I've always had great service whenever I've gone. My recommendations are the Taco Salad and either the chicken or pork souvlaki platters. The Taco Salad comes with a glob of guacamole and can be topped with meats. The souvlaki platters are the biggest in Waterloo for their price (topping both Benny's at Uni/Weber and the Daily Grill restaurant at Northfield near Conestoga) and the tastiest - the tzaziki is /not/ cold when I get it and they provide plenty (I can't stand other places that provide tzaziki in little plastic cups cold directly from the fridge). read more

First time visit. I am not from this area, last time I tried to visit, I was unable to get in because it was so busy. The restaurant is clean, the servers polite and efficient. I ordered the Rueben. It comes with coleslaw or fries or salad or up charge Caesar. I chose the coleslaw. I was disappointed with the coleslaw as it was relatively small considering it is a substitute for fries. It tasted good but did have way too much bottled dressing. The Reuben was a nice size, thick with corned beef, but again, disappointed. It had barely any sour kraut, no cheese, no dressing. Basically just a grilled corned beef sandwich. It did come with a pickle. That unfortunately was the highlight of my meal. But it was a good pickle. Crisp, not soggy. I was never offered a refill on my drink. From my experience, I am not sure what deserves all of the rave reviews. All in all, it was not a great meal. Prices as expected, average for this type of place. I may give this restaurant a second chance if I am in the area again but it won't be the Reuben. Or a coleslaw. read more

The breakfast menu was really extensive - there were waffles, pancakes, egg scrambles, eggs Benedict, etc and you had a choice of at least 4 different varieties of each. The food was pretty standard for breakfast food. My boyfriend had a breakfast special and he liked it, except for the hash browns which were the shredded kind (we both agreed these are our least favourite type of hash brown). The portions are huge (I ate about three-quarters of my sandwich and there was still enough turkey left for my cat to get three good-sized meal/snacks out of it). Went there today for an early lunch after wandering the Market across the street. It was around 12:00pm and the place was packed but we got sat very quickly. Our waitress, a very bubbly and happy girl with blonde hair came to us very quickly. Took our drink and food orders. I had already looked over the menu online and was craving the Reuben sandwich. Our sandwiches came out fast and hot. Good amount of meat and tasted delicious. One of the best Reuben's I've had. People watching is kind of my thing and I was watching other people's food go by and the next time I go I'll definitely be getting the eggs Benedict or salad with softball size amount chicken salad on top.
