Good, but super, duper slooow. Located just around the corner from the Kitchener Market. Space is small, it's takeout only. When I came in, there were 3 people waiting for their banh mis. 1 of them was a large-ish order. It took quite some time for anyone to take my order and even longer to wait for 1 sandwich. I waited for approx 15-20mins if not longer. Quite a few people came in AFTER I ordered, but they got their sandwiches before I did which was weird. There are 3 people working behind the counter, and 1 of those people did cash as well. They charged tax even though I paid cash. Sandwich was good, but be prepared to wait. Staff were super friendly with my kid in tow even though they were busy. Having been displaced from Mississauga I was looking for a Bhan Mi place in the area and it fills the craving. Had the Veggie, Assorted and Spicy Chicken. I asked about peanuts as we have an allergy in the family and the staff knew right off the bat which was ok and which wasn't. This has been my go-to spot for good, cheap food for over 10 years now. I always make a stop when I'm out running errands. I've followed them from location to location. I've watched their children grow up. They're concerned about me when I'm sick (the owner just wants to be like your mom). Their food is delicious and homemade (everything but the bread is made by the owners from scratch). They're generous (they'll often fill a large rubbermaid bin with sandwiches to donate to shelters). And I think their value is unbeatable (McDonald's prices for way better food). I love the fresh salad rolls (which you can ask to have made vegetarian or vegan if you like), with spicy dipping sauce or the #6. I think their sesame buns should be more popular (like donuts but not overly sweet). She is so dedicated to her restaurant. I asked her once what she would do if she won a big lottery. Would she retire? No. She said she would invest in better ingredients and hire someone so she could take an extra day off in the week (as it is, she's only ever off on Sunday so she can go to church). Walking in on a Wednesday afternoon, the place was deserted and only an Asian lady (owner?) was working. Based on the average review, I was prepared to have the best Banh Mi I've ever had. I was tempted to give this place a 3 based on being a bit letdown from such lofty expectations, but I should just review without bias. First off, I walked into the place, and I have to honestly say it is the worst looking and kept place I've seen in the Western Hemisphere in recent memory. Decades old tiles and (lack of) paint job, random things stored everywhere, ancient furniture etc... I'm honestly someone who puts ambience as a distant value, but it was a pretty big turnoff. I literally walked in, then out, to check that I read the sign correctly and that I was in the right place. I went ahead and ordered the pork sandwich combo, and first thing is the meat goes in the microwave. It's interesting that many people comment about how 'fresh' it is, because the microwave is literally right in the middle of the prep area. A steam-heated container for the meat would be much better. The combo came with a pop, and there were virtually no cans left in the fridge, and I was expected to take one sitting outside the fridge rather than a bottle. Now with the negative out of the way, here is the positive: In terms of freshness as others referred to, the bun was quite fresh, and I believe they bake it themselves daily. The pickled veggies were nice and did indeed seem fresh. The sauce was pretty good too, but I could've done with more heat, especially since I asked for it spicy. The meat was pretty good too, but not very tender, for obvious reasons coming out of the microwave. It came with a spring roll, which was pretty good. And the lady working there was quite nice and checked up on me a couple times. Here's the part that brings the review up: it is indeed incredibly cheap and less than you'll find for anything else - including any fast food. And the food is still pretty good, and similarly, better than you'll find in the same price range.
