I routinely stay at the Marriott hotel just up the road. Jack's is my preferred breakfast stop each morning. The prices are very reasonable, the food is cooked well and makes for a great start to my day. I have only eaten here for breakfast so I can't speak to their lunch or dinner offerings. read more

Since Jacks Family Restaurant in Waterloo opened their doors I have been a patron. At least once or twice a month my wife and I take our two little children to Jacks for dinner too. This morning I pulled into the parking lot opposite the front doors (where many other cars were parked...) - Parallel parked and started walking towards the front entrance when I heard a man yelling "hey you did you hit that car?!" - I turned around and in front of me stood a grey haired man and again asked me the same question. I said no, I did not hit the car behind me as I'm feet away from it and have a reverse camera. He then said "well this isn't customer parking anyway" I politely told him to mind his own business and started to walk away when he yelled "this is my business!" I then turned around and told him that I've been a Jacks patron for years - there are NO signs saying "no parking" and why am I being treated like this if this is indeed his business. I said "if this is how you treat your guests I'll gladly go elsewhere" to which he replied "yes please go somewhere else as you're being an asshole!" Holy shit! I have never been treated so poorly in my life! Needles to say I got in my car and went to another breakfast spot not to far away where the service is always friendly! This is by no means in, in anyway shape or form fine dining. This is essentially a family owned Denny's. Yes, it's clean, yes it's a reasonably pleasant environment, but the food is not worth it. The food is not good, although if you're desperately hungry... and the service is OK, sometimes good sometimes snooty. (It's all very starchy and bland) The local hotels - there are three of them -recommend this place. But caveat emptor: they recommend this place because they have no choice. There. Are. No . Other. Options. In. The. Area. Period. If there's nobody to compete with you, you don't have to be good! This is truly a perfect example of the adage: "Location, location, location." Again, With three major hotel brands literally surrounding the restaurant, and NO competition. they don't have to have good food. The place usually has a weight on a Saturday or Sunday morning, and it's not just hotel guest, it's local. But again there's nothing else in the area. I have been here, unfortunately, several times, so my review is based on not just one visit. Sorry, I've gotten a little repetitive on the theme of this review but I hope you get the point. Beat eggs Benedict in town. The hollandaise was very good and the hash browns were great but need a little salt. The place is quite big and well kept. I found this place a true disappointment. We can understand a wait for seating, as we were 7 people (two separate families with young children). We waiting 45mins, finally someone comes out (were were the only people waiting at this point and it was getting close to 7:40pm), said the table was paying and it'll be available shortly, 10mins later after that seated. We got seated, orders were taken quickly. Our side of the table ordered garlic bread, which came out before the drinks were served. Drinks had to be asked to be refilled, plates from the garlic bread not taken away and left there at the end of the table. On a plus side, kids got their food first. I ordered the liver and bacon, very under-seasoned and I love liver and bacon as a treat when eating out. Food was okay, but nothing spectacular. Slow to get drink refills, slow to bring the check and even the ice cream to go had taken a good 5mins to be brought to the table. We didn't bother to tip, we didn't even get asked at any point during the meal if everything was alright. Won't be back again. read more

Better than the reviews here suggest. Portion size was indeed extravagant, like good ol' farmer's breakfast sizes. Prices were more than reasonable for the amount of food. The ambiance is fine, well-decorated and tasteful. Service was excellent and professional. Immediate attention on arrival, servers were helpful, water was brought and filled at appropriate times, food orders arrived quickly. Server came by at least twice to ask how food was. I could not find any fault with the service. I'm not sure what happened for the previous reviewers. Or maybe the manager saw the reviews and addressed the issues. Food was simple but delicious. The food lacked seasoning and the wait staff wasn't attentive, while the place wasn't very busy. I decided to walk across from my hotel and see what the local place could offer. I ordered the ribs, which were on special and came with a vegetable, salad or soup, and a potato or rice. Being on special I expected it to be something that they were good at. I ordered the soup and the potato was baked and loaded. The soup was cabbage pastrami and was good, too hot, but overall decent flavor. The pastrami wasn't apartment, but small chunks were in the soup. The meal came and the vegetables were cauliflower, carrots, and broccoli. The were steamed and still had water on them, they were soft and had no seasoning. The potato was burnt on one side, the toppings for the potato consisted of a bit of cheese, a sampling of cold bacon, and a few chives. There were lots of ribs, however they were tough and had minimal flavor. The BBQ flavor was decent, however it was just poured on and masked the dryness and no seasoning. To top it off, I didn't get a drink refill, after asking once my meal came, and it took even longer to pay the bill. I had high hopes when I saw the decor, not happy with the outcome. read more

I love this place for breakfast! Very good, fresh food in a good quantity. My favourite part is the fresh fruit they provide with the Benedict's for a sweet touch to end off. I'm giving 3 stars and not 4 only because this place can get really busy and loud. That's a bit of a turn off. The good is pretty good; home style cooking. Not too many spices used here, but it's still pretty tasty. The portions are huge and you'll most likely have dinner for the next day too. The only dish I suggest you stay way from is the Fish and Chips - not their best dish. I personably like their chicken tenders. They have a homemade batter and they use real chicken. Jack's is my go to breakfast place! The portions and the quality of the food for the price you're paying is phenomenal. Love going with friends and family. I really love going there for breakfast and usually get the Jack's breakfast. Occasionally, I get their skillets too which don't disappoint, either. You can sit in their roomy booths or just at the bar if you want to catch a drink and a game. The service can be slow sometimes when it's busy, understandably, or when you're hidden away in a corner booth, but overall the quality of service is usually fast and polite. Try to avoid breakfast on Sundays, as from my experience, that's when they're usually the busiest and you can be left waiting up to an hour. The atmosphere of the restaurant is always buzzing with people and the decor is tasteful and feels like home. read more

So happy that Jack's is able to do takeout now. Despite not being able to sit in the restaurant and enjoy a meal as we usually would have, we still received the fantastic food and friendly service we love about Jack's. Placing an order over the phone was very easy and our order was ready for us exactly when we were told it would be. When I forgot to ask for an additional dipping sauce, it was included in the meal free of charge...it's the little gestures like that which make it clear how much this place cares about its customers and the feeling is mutual. I can't believe I haven't written a review for Jack's yet after all these year of coming here! This place certainly knows how to do a mean brunch, huge platters at an amazing price! My most recent visit was on a Friday morning, we were able to get a seat right away but the place was still surprisingly packed for a weekday. On weekends, the line is usually out the door. I've waited around half an hour or more on weekend mornings before. However I assure you this place is worth the wait! I usually order Jack's traditional breakfast ($6.29) which includes hash browns, eggs, toasts, and beans. It is a classic combination done perfectly, it always leaves me satisfied and stuffed for hours. I recently tried their veggie scrambler ($11.99) which was also delicious, it has so many veggies such as spinach, mushroom and asparagus which they scramble with eggs and cheese...talk about yum! The dishes never leave me feeling greasy even though I am sure they use a fair amount of oil/butter. I also always order coffee because it taste great here and even better, it's unlimited! If you want to start your day off well-caffeinated and nourished, Jack's will make sure that happens! read more

Had the Montreal smoked meat lunch special. Mon Dieu!!!! The meat was piled very high and tasted just like at Schwartz's !! I ate it and forgot to take a photo. Wait time in line was what they said it would be. Coffee is good. Derive was really great. Food was good, not great. What you would expect. Portions are huge. Absolute must visit...The Greek food was simply marvelous. The Gyros platter was amazingly good. The fries were crispy and the entire meal was delicious. The Greek salad that came with it was also fresh. The meal was so good, I had the same menu item twice. I'm sure other menu items were just as good. I took it as take-out and enjoyed it at our room at the Courtyard down the street. BTW: Don't order the pies, not so good. I would have given it a 5-star, but the dessert pies were a bit disappointing. But don't let that stop you from trying out this place. I dropped in the late afternoon today for a VERY late lunch or early dinner. I was hungry, I hadn't eaten a thing. This place was across the street from my hotel so I walked across the street to give it a try. Honestly, I wasn't expecting too much, but I was pleasantly surprised. First off, it was a couple hours before dinner time and the place already had a bunch of customers - always a good sign. I was promptly seated and my order taken. The salad was what you'd expect, good but not fantastic. My soft drink was a little weak but drinkable. I ordered the prime rib and it came out quickly. I was covered in a thick au jus more like what in the States they'd call a beef gravy, but one bite and I was hooked. I was VERY tasty, exactly as I had ordered. If I had had to score this place based on the salad and soft drink, it would have been a very nondescript 3 star. That prime rib moved it into a solid 4-star ranking, the same as what I've given to some very nice (and expensive) places in the States. I'm looking forward to see how they handle breakfast in the morning. Bottom line, I can't speak to the rest of their menu, but if you're looking for a very nice piece of prime rib, you'd be hard pressed to do any better than this place. read more

I do not know how people are giving this place bad reviews! As someone in their younger years I come here all the time for breakfast (I can't comment on the lunch or dinner as I've never had it). For the regular breakfast it's I think $4.75!!! How can you not go wrong with that?! The portions are huge too, like you get filled up. Not to mention the potatoes are to die for, they changed it up and made shredded potatoes which I think taste delicious. The wait staff is also very friendly too and if you go during a weekday I've had my food come out in 10 minutes. BUT if you are going on a Saturday especially Sunday you will be waiting to be seated and food will take a little longer. But nonetheless it's still great service and amazing quality food. read more

Went in for lunch today with my sister and boyfriend.She ordered the hot dog which she enjoyed. My boyfriend and I ordered the jacks burger with fries. It came out looking pretty good, until my boyfriend found a long blonde hair in his burger...he took it out and ate the burger anyways. Later, when I was almost done my burger I discovered a black hair in mine...I didn't want to finish my meal after seeing that...since we left the restaurant, both my boyfriend and I have been very stomach sick. Have been here several times with the family for both breakfast and dinner. Large portions fill my belly, and the breakfast is really reasonably priced for what you get. Some of the dinners are large enough for both me and my Mum to share (we like to get the souvlaki dinner) and the food always tastes excellent. The staff is also friendly and obliging. We went close to 5pm on a Tuesday. It was quiet as dinner rush hadn't yet begun. Looked clean enough but well worn and dark!? Food came in a timely enough manner but I have to tell you that we were both grievously disappointed in our meals. Firstly, it was cold! My dining companion ordered hot roast beef sandwich and the gravy (which was not even beef gravy and tasteless) was already set and the beef was not a fresh roast but packaged. The broccoli and carrots were not tender crisp steamed but hard- I could hear the crunching as she bit into them. I ordered the new Philly steak and besides being cold, it was so dry you could choke on it, the peppers were cut so tiny and the onions were microscopic. I've had Philly steak sandwiches before and this was brutally disappointing. The french fries were hot but didn't stay that way because they don't bother to heat the plates. The fries also tasted of old grease. I used to work in a restaurant and I know what unfiltered grease tastes like. The waitress was pleasant but nobody ever came back to ask us how our meal was and when they brought the bill they didn't ask us if we enjoyed it. She did ask if we needed change. I hate that Bring the change and then the tip can be left accordingly. I had never been here before but heard many good things so I was truly disappointed. We both felt we wasted $40 which could have been better spent and enjoyed elsewhere. We aren't sure what all the rave reviews were about. (we agree with Jeff P and Chris L). We won't be returning. We could have sent it back but there seemed to be only one waitress on the floor and we figured we wouldn't fair any better second time around. read more

This is a convenient place to stop for lunch when visiting the St. Jacob's Farmers Market. We had to wait a few minutes for a table on market day, but not too long. The menu offers something for everyone, and prices are reasonable considering the large portion sizes. I had the chicken souvlaki wrap, and it was good! Seated quickly at the bar, waitress helped me select a dark beer, a porter, and it perfect for my taste. I ordered the Chicken Caesar salad which I enjoyed. Most would likely say it lacked spice, meaning salt. Serving size was good. But I was never asked how I enjoyed my meal or if I wanted another beer or water, since my glass was empty. We went to Jack's Family Restaurant on Sunday evening and we greeted very warmly with very friendly staff. We were promptly seated and given extensive menus. Our server was friendly, knowledgable about the menu, and took our order without being pushy. Our apps came in good time, we all ordered Caesar salad, and we were very pleasantly surprised. Very fresh and crisp greens and the dressing was excellent. I asked our server if the dressing was store bought and she explained that all of their dressings are homeade. It was apparent that they were house made but I like to test the servers on their menu knowledge. Our plates were cleaned up promptly and our entrees arrived shortly after. Our one son had the hamburger and he loved it. The fries were very good an the toppings were fresh. Surprisingly he couldn't finish it. This is surprising seeing as he is a teenager. I and our other son had the rib special which included the salad and entree. It was a lot of food. For me it was my meal and the leftovers cover two lunches! My husband had the cabbage roll special and he loved it. He is Polish and grew up eating amazing cabbage rolls. It is impressive that he said they were so good. For 13.99 his large plate, which he could not finish either, also included his Caesar salad. Our server Christina was excellent and earned her tip. The restaurant is very clean and tidy which is a must. We will definitely be back. It is not fine dining but food quality, friendliness of staff and good atmosphere are worth it.
