I haven't had a quality burger near at least 100 miles of school since going to PA, but this place hits the spot. It's cute. It's quaint. It's low key and has a nice rustic atmosphere about it as if they took Brooklyn and transported it to Harrisburg. The cool historical signs and everything. Loved it! If you're here I recommend the Jackson burger---the sauce is reminiscent of in n outs in the west coast but with a different kick. Made me miss my home! Definetly the highhlight of my trip to Harrisburg! We were so lucky that they were open just as we were looking for a good lunch. Jackson house is family run (son takes orders, dad on the grill, mom brings the food out) which I loved, you constantly hear "another burger dad" or "foods ready ma" and they work their butt off the full 17 hours a week they are open. Thats right, they make a hell of a living from only being open a few hours a day during the week. The menu is fabulous, from sandwiches to burgers, salads, seriously I wanted everything. We got a burger, philly steak sandwich, bacon cheese fries, salad loaded with roasted veggies and tuna sandwich. All of it was so damn good! Burger and steak perfect for my hungry men, cheese fried topped with strips of crunchy bacon, my salad with the house vinagrette (red wine) was perfect, healthy not so much but loaded with italian veggies of all colors and flavors, the tuna on a perfectly crunchy sesame roll with marinated veggies and olive oil, no mayo, the italain way and only way I can enjoy it. God, what a damn good meal for a descent price, the location is great. I can absolutely see why their burger "The Jackson" is legendary. It is COMPLETELY worth all of the hype. The fries are great too. Went during peak lunch hours and the line was to the door. Fortunately one of the employees came from behind the counter to get a head count from everyone who was ordering a burger, so it took only about 30 mins to get my order which was to go. The hours are kind of weak, but the food is ridiculous! Bread from Philly, good lunch meats that are a SIN to eat with cover-up condiments (oil and vinegar only), and certainly the best burger in Pennsylvania. Hands down, THE BEST place in Harrisburg for a burger or sub. They are strict about ordering so you need to call ahead with large orders and don't be surprised if they run out of burgers on a Thursday or Friday. They remind me of the Soup Nazi, tough but misunderstood. When I go I get the Luca Brazzi sub. The pepper poppers, the meat, the cheese, the rolls all from Philly. One of the best Hamburger, hoagie, cheesesteak spots in the city. This place is a must visit if your midtown looking for a good lunch bite. The meats they use on the Hoagies are top notch. The bread really makes the sandwiches. Great quality rolls strait from a local Philadelphia bakery. As far as the cheesesteaks, they do them right. As far as I'm concerned, they hold their own against some of the best steak spots I have had in Philly. Jackson House's true claim to fame in my opinion are their burgers. These burgers they serve are some of the best I have had period. They use fresh ingredients and the burgers are grilled and prepared by hand. Just note if your in a hurry your going to be waiting a little while for preparation. I'll tell you, Jackson House is a true icon and staple in the City of Harrisburg. This place is family owned and run. If you have never been, you truly owe yourself the visit. This was fantastic and the other reviews are spot on. It seems this place open for a short period of the day, is run by a family. They don't do take out orders when there is a line for people wanting to sit and eat in-house. The place is noisy and small. It's old. It's amazing though. The burgers are fresh clean tasting meat. It's just simplicity. And you can have so many different varieties of them. They also have hoagies and some yummy fries. The portions are large, however, the fries are small. Parking was challenging. There is street parking but careful to read the signs. We saw the parking police come by when we were parking so it seems they are strict. We had to wait for a table, but we did get a table before our food came out. We sat in the window which I loved. read more

Prices were reasonable, service was fine and if I have one complaint, the bathroom was...well...may be a future EPA Superfund site. What a great hidden gem! I've been trying to get here for some time now. They're only open for lunch during the week and are always very busy. I got the Jackson Burger (untoasted bun) and fries. I went there on a Friday morning whenever they first open and I ordered two cheesesteaks without marinara sauce on them and whenever I got home they had marinara on them so I went back and I told them that I didn't want Marinara in them and the older Lady said that I did order them with marinara sauce and they were arguing with me back-and-forth and they didn't want to make me another sandwich unless I waited the long line which I waited previously for the sandwiches that they messed up and whenever I got the original cheesesteaks the meat was very dry and tasteless. Whenever I took my cheesesteaks back they tried to dig through them without any gloves as if I was lying so they just ended up giving me my money back and being really rude with me when I was being very polite with what was wrong with my order. The owner and everyone else in there was very rude to me in front of everyone else end it is very upsetting because the thought of hospitality in treating the customer right went completely out the window. read more

Ordered the vegetarian cheesesteak since that's the only meal I can eat there as a vegetarian. Get there to find out the price is raised by $2 from the Facebook menu "due to the rising cost of meat" (?). But whatever, still pretty cheap for a big sandwich. Get back to work to find giant chunks of meat strewn in, which is completely unacceptable. I've heard this sandwich is good from meat eaters, but I definitely would not recommend to someone who cares about whether they're eating meat or someone whose body can't process it. Finally after three years of knowing about this place I made it here! And let me tell you the drive and ATM trip were well worth it! The line was almost outside of the door but it only took about 15 minutes. While in line they asked who all wanted hamburgers so they could get them all started and shorten the wait. The place had south philly decorations everywhere and is the sedition of a hole in the wall. My Italian burger was delicious. This is my kind of dive! Headed here for lunch with some coworkers. Had a Jackson House Burger with everything. The burger was very well portioned and flavored. I also grabbed an order of cheese fries which had the good olde Kraft cheese whiz. Having seen how great the hoagies looked online, I took a to-go hoagie for dinner that night. What an amazing little spot with excellent food! I got the Jackson burger which was enormous and it was seriously one of the best burgers I've ever had! Food is great but the customer service - RUDE! OK this is the second time this has happened. Today we got there at 1:40 and they told us that the grill closes at 1:40 PM and we could not have a burger or a steak salad. Meanwhile there was a chef grilling 4 burgers as we were ordering. 2 of us walked out the door. A few weeks ago the woman that answered the phone to take our carry out order was so rude that we cancelled our order...we were simply asking for an extra house dressing for the salad. If you've not yet been to the Jackson House, don't go! It's awfully small and typically crowded, and I'd hate to have to share one of my favorite places in all of Harrisburg with the rest of you. The Jackson House is as close to an authentic Philly sub (hoagie) you're going to find outside of Philadelphia itself, and that goes for both the cheese steaks and hoagies. Nothing drives me crazier than restaurants and shitty sandwich shops that offer "Philly Cheese Steaks" when they're nothing more than flavorless meat on a rock-hard roll. The Jackson House, though, delivers on what they promise. And if you're not in the market for a cheese steak, let me recommend my two favorite hoagies on the menu: the Bada Bing and the Old Italian. The two are kind of similar, in that they're both a combination of Italian meats and cheeses, yet somehow they each have their own unique flavor. Furthermore, the bread itself is outrageously good, as are the sharp provolone and optional red pepper shooters. By the way, even you vegetarians will be happy to eat here, as their veggie cheese steak is dynamite. Rather than using a faux-meat substitute like seitan or tempeh, the Jackson House piles a heap of mixed grilled vegetables onto a hoagie roll and smothers it in cheese, sauce and mayo. It's ridiculously good. The other can't-miss at the Jackson House is the burger. While they can sometimes be "brittle" -- that is, they tend to fall apart -- they're made fresh to order from actual hand-made patties. I worked in Harrisburg maybe 10 days in 2015 and I visited Jackson House at least 4 of those days... and each time I visit, I've witnessed some poor customer getting yelled at regarding the restaurant not taking large orders. I'm not sure what constitutes a large order and I'm not sure if I missed one of their many signs displaying this golden rule, but I do know I would be livid and embarrassed if I got yelled at for simply trying to place an order. Watching a lady get yelled at (in front of a child that was with her) was too much to witness today. The *best* subs, burgers, cheese steaks, meatball subs, fries, in Downtown Harrisburg. My favorite sub is the Bada-Boom with Roasted Reds. Second favorite - The Genoa. I eat here about every other week. And I just LOVE that smelly aged provolone :) Burgers, Fries & Meatball subs are best eaten at the restaurant because the buns get soggy after time. Also, try the pepper shooters they're bangin! (cherry pepper stuffed with prosciutto and aged provolone, marinated in olive oil and spices.) As far as the "Call Ahead" suggestion goes... It must be said: The Bada Bing -- an Italian with four meats and sharp provolone cheese, flavorful red tomatoes and just right heat-wise onions, all on a seeded Philadelphia roll -- is absolutely, hands-down, no question about it, the best hoagie money can buy. There are many delicious things on the Jackson House's menu, but the Bada Bing is so over-the-top delicious, I can rarely bring myself to order anything else. The Jackson House family is friendly and down-to-earth. This place never changes (except within the last year, when the menu grew a bit) and that's a good thing. It's a decent place to eat-in, but to-go is often a more viable option. The place usually gets crowded starting between 11:45 a.m. and noon. If you arrive during the rush, plan to wait.
