I recently went without knowing anything about this particularly store. The shirts were amazing! Jacqueline was really nice and helped me choose out the right size and I ended up with the most beautiful Hawaiian shirt I've ever seen, that fit me perfectly. I'm bit of a strange size and she was able to help me choose the perfect size. Jacqueline then talked to me about how she became an artist/seamstress, and how she's been in Kauai for over 50 years. She encouraged me to follow my own artistic dreams. Wonderful experience and great owner. I think in some ways the store and the owner are a bit like an artichoke. HAWAII 2020 ADVENTURES #7: HAWAIIAN SHIRTS MADE IN KAUAI Two years ago when I traveled to the Big Island I visited the town Hawi. I went inside a local shop that sold crafts and clothes. One of the clothes was a white Hawaiian shirt that showed a blue image of the Big Island. I thought that was cool for a shirt to represent the Island of Hawaii. At that time I felt I had too many Hawaiian shirts so I didn't buy it. I regretted that decision when I came back to the mainland. I wasn't going to make that same mistake again when I visit another island in Hawaii. When I was in Kauai for 5 days I wanted a Hawaiian shirt that represented Kauai. An added bonus would be if the Hawaiian shirt was also made in Kauai. The first time I came to this store was the Saturday before Thanksgiving. I read reviews about the owner who comes off as unfriendly to customers. Prior to visiting this store I was visiting other stores in Hanapepe that sold Hawaiian shirts. Those stores displayed Hawaiian shirts but the shirt tags stated "Made in Indonesia". This would be like me going to Chinatown in San Francisco to buy things "Made in China" but end up buying items "Made in Singapore". Maybe that is why people go to this store because the Hawaiian shirts are made in Hawaii (more specifically made in Kauai) despite the owner's treatment to customers. When I went here that Saturday she seemed friendly but that was probably due to people in the store. The following Monday would be a different story. When I went here alone after lunch she wasn't initially friendly to me. She asked where I was staying and I told her Inn Waimea. She said her friend owns that place then she gave me coupons for other stores in Kauai. I felt I was at her good grace. Since she makes her own shirts she asked me when do I want my shirt. I replied what she had in stock. For a one-person shop I was impressed by the number of shirts she made. When I go shopping for clothes I like to take my time but I did feel I was rushed by her. One shirt that intrigued me was a red shirt, which featured black musical bars and notes to reflect the music scene in Kauai as stated by the owner. There were also several blue Hawaiian shirts but I have slightly too many Hawaiian shirts with that color hence I was interested with that red Hawaiian shirt. I decided to buy the shirt that featured turtles as the owner claimed it is her best seller. After selecting the turtle shirt I showed the owner the 10% discount when I checked-in. She was shocked and appalled when she saw the discount. The shirt costs $85 but with a discount I shaved off $8.50. She tried her best not to rant at me but she complained how corporations are raking in all the money from small businesses. She claimed Yelp had no authority to provide the check-in coupon without her consent. From my understanding companies like Yelp would not provide a check-in discount unless the owner of the store signs an agreement. My thing at this shop was not to say anything and let her calm down. If she wouldn't honor my 10% discount check-in I would leave. She honored my discount. This is to let you know if you have a check-in discount she may not honor it. Also the owner only takes cash. At the end she was crying because she stated four stores around her street had closed down to do COVID. I consoled her but that doesn't explain her past treatment to customers. Difficulties such as COVID doesn't change people but they reveal people who they really are. After reading the reviews and visiting the store the owner is what she is. This is to let you know that this store isn't for everyone especially those who take their time deciding what item(s) to buy. This is how I based my rating. The Hawaiian shirts are rated as a 4-star. The owner's attitude is rated as 2-star. Therefore the average and final rating is 3-star. read more

After having lunch nearby I walked into this shop. It was quite a eye catching entrance especially with all that purple as it's my favorite color. The shop is filled with merchandise and very colorful. There was no customers in there. I quietly walked around. No one came and approached me but there was a older lady in the back in deep concentrating on a project. There is a large bird cage with two lovebirds. The cage needs thorough cleaning and the floor needs it too. Didn't buy anything. read more

My other half and I wandered in on a lazy Sunday afternoon and were greeted by a sweet, crusty character. We immediately fell in love with Jacqueline. Every thing about this shop just works. She has a limited selection of prints to choose from, but she can customize the cut for each customer, and make sure she has it ready before you leave. She did such a great job on the custom shirt we ordered the pattern lined up along the button and for the pocket. If you love handmade things and want to support local businesses, I highly recommend stopping in and getting your own custom shirt. It won't set you back a ton of scratch -ours was $75. Amazing work!! We found out about Jacqueline on the Kauai Community Facebook page and called to make an appointment. Jacqueline knew we were coming from Kilauea, and asked if we'd like a referral to a tailor that would be closer to us. We explained that no one else nearby was available for more than a hem in time for our wedding. She took our wedding timeline very seriously and made time for us to come visit as soon as we could make the drive! It was such a treat to visit Hanapepe and Jacqueline in her shop. We enjoyed getting to know her a bit while she took measurements and we both knew we'd found the right tailor. What an adorable location with historical roots! The Swinging Bridge, Spice Co's fruity popsicles, Banana Patch Studios and other artsy shops are nearby, so we made a fun day out of it! When it was time for my fiance to come for the second appointment, Jacqueline made final alterations within a few minutes so as to save him from making a third drive. She did a fantastic job on my fiancé's bridegroom outfit and offered helpful recommendations regarding outfit accessories. He was so happy when he came home! We were looking for a particular print but she didn't have an extra large. We asked about having it in this size and she said she'd make one. The Aloha Shirt Lady (the same storefront and owner as Jacqueline on Kaua'i) made us a wonderful ladies Hawaiian shirt. My mom is very into music; my Dad and I were excited to see she had 3 different music note fabric types from which to choose. Within a few hours (she quoted 48) our new shirt was ready! We were very impressed not only at the high quality of the fabric and quality of the shirt, but also that she was able to line up the music notes from one piece of fabric to the other. If you are planning on buying an aloha shirt, look no further than Jacqueline. She has a bunch on the rack but will tailor any of them to fit your exact measurements and preferences (fitted/loose, vents, sleeve length, etc). Don't like any of the ones on the rack? She has a number of bolts of fabric to choose from so you can find a pattern you like, and she will make a custom shirt for you. I was extremely impressed for the price ($65 for an aloha shirt), it's great quality stuff and I paid less for a custom shirt here than I did for an off-the-rack Tori Richard. It fits perfectly and I now have a great hand-made souvenir that I can wear on Aloha Fridays back on the mainland. It is extremely easy to miss her shop - it's on Hanapepe's main street right off of HI-50. I've driven by on a few trips, never knew the place was here, and only found her after learning that she was doing work for one of the local shirt shops in Koloa. Skip the high end retailers in Poipu and the cheapo foreign-made stuff from Whalers and ABC and head to Jacqueline's - you will be glad you did. read more

Jacqueline customizes the length of the aloha shirt to the customer, and you can choose from the fabrics she has on hand (not a large selection when we were there) or you can provide your own fabric and she takes $10 off the price of the shirt. She can tell you where on the island to go fabric shopping. She made the shirt in a few days. She did a beautiful job matching the print on the pocket. I appreciate that attention to detail. We heard about her store from an article in the New York Times and it was a must-do on our trip. We picked out our own fabric and came back a few days later to pick up our custom made shirts. We went in midday on a Sunday to see if they were finished, but she had still had just a few steps left to go so she said to come back at night (we had a boat tour in the area.) she stayed open an hour and a half late for us to come pick it up! If I could rate zero stars I would. Walked into this store to ask a question about the area and browsed around a bit while waiting on the lady in charge. When she finally noticed I was in the store (she was on the phone holding what seemed to be a non business phone call) she was completely rude.
