I came here specifically to try the caramels that others have raved about, on a Sunday at 6:30pm (they close at 7pm). As a newly graduated dentist who doesn't even like caramels (They stick in your teeth! They cause cavities! Bad bad bad!) I can't say that I wasn't at least a little bit hesitant and guilty to try these. Situated on the corner of Rue de Turenne in a random, dead-ish part of Paris, I walked in and was immediately greeted by the sight of lots of (probably very rich) Asian girls sitting around enjoying their pastries and hot chocolate or whatever. All of the sales associates noticed me, but ignored me (thanks, Parisian customer service) because they were too busy catering to the rich girls. Great. I wandered around aimlessly looking at the beautiful chocolates, caramels, and fruit jellies being held like pieces of jewelry inside glass cases. I finally got a hold of one of the sales girls and asked in English to try a piece of caramel, and she gave me a piece of the carefully wrapped Mango passion caramel. I popped it in my mouth and Uhhhhh-- is this really caramel? Are they sure it's not something else? In short, the most amazing piece of caramel I have (and probably ever will) have. I don't know if the caramels at other Parisian shops are as good, but this one will do. Obscenely expensive though, they come out to a little more than $1.50 a piece. I got several flavors (regular caramel, mango passion, almond, chestnut honey, vanilla, and pistachio) and I have to say that I like the pistachio the best-- the pistachio nut fantastically balanced out the nutty sweetness of the caramel itself. The mango passion that everyone raves about is good, but only if you like strong fruity flavors, and it's something that I couldn't eat in bulk because the flavor is so strong and bursting. Surprisingly I didn't like the chestnut honey at all (although it sounded soo good) because it was a bit too sweet on top of the already sweet caramel flavor. Almond was good too, because the almond nut really tempers out the sweetness of the caramel. Vanilla had these little black speckles that I can only hope are flecks of real vanilla bean (lol), but didn't taste different enough from regular caramel that would warrant purchasing both. I really regret not asking if I could take a peek up the spiral staircase where their elf factory allegedly resides, and I also regret not having the balls to ask to try everything else in the store (hahaha) specifically the fruit jellies that some rich biatch was buying entire gift boxes of. Damnn, if I ever visit Paris again, I'm going to come here in the middle of the afternoon and treat myself to every single sweet in this store. One day when I'm rich, maybe! read more
