We requested a full pack and move. While Jakes was not the cheapest moving company we spoke to we figured we'd pay for quality and get good value for our money. This is not what happened. This is what we were told was inclided. Mirror, Glass, Picture, TV's, Mattress, Couch, etc.) Will be wrapped and / or protected before being loaded onto the truck. Couldn't be more grateful or happy with a moving service. We had an emergency move yesterday do to severe water damage in a condo and needed same day, immediate moving. After calling multiple top 10 Yelp rated same-day movers, Jake's was the only company that could accommodate us on short notice same-day moving. We also had an unusual contract issue in that the actual person moving was unavailable to sign and pay the moving fees. Jake's gave us options for service and expedited the process for us. The movers showed up on time, helped pack in the watery mess, moved and loaded all of the boxes and furniture, and delivered it to storage in under 6 hours. They were efficient, professional, and super easy to work with. I can't recommend them enough and would use them again. read more

I have moved frequently in the military and private sector- local and long distance moves. It's hard for me to think of more professional movers than Jake's. We have many antiques and they were treated with extreme care. The movers cleaned up after delivery and were gracious enoug to move some furniture more than once. Cannot recommend them! After about an hour on the phone and even providing room/ house pictures to the estimator, I can only assume they intentionally underbid the move to get my business and then charged me way more (in my case double) on the day. They require cash or bank check the day of services but since they were totally wrong in their estimate, we did not have the cash so they also charged us a 5% service charge to pay by credit card. Interesting, as to the unpacking, we dismissed the guys earlier saying we would do the majority of the unpacking ourselves but there was no savings or discount as now it was a flat fee, not hourly for the unpacking, only the packing end. Several items were damaged in the move but the worse was that their packers thought it was ok to stack in one box artwork/pictures without anything in between - no protection as backs of frames sat rubbing on fronts of other pieces causing damage. When I brought this to management's attention, they were rude and were all to happy to inform me that their liability was capped at $50 and I should have gotten extra insurance (read their fine print). They have no incentive to use more and proper packing materials since that cuts into their profit and since they do not have to worry about much liability. I am very unhappy. read more

We've used Jake's twice now - two years in a row for moves between Rockville and Northern Virginia. They always give a good rate and get the job done well and in a reasonable amount of time. They also disassembled and reassembled beds. They were on time, reliable, and responsible. Although they did by accident leave one item in the truck, they gave great service recovery and offered to deliver the item to us at no charge. I needed to hire movers to move a 3 seat sofa from my 2 short flight apartment to the dumpster located in my complex. I scheduled a free bulk item removal with Montgomery County. Several weeks after my move, I was contacted by someone who identified as the "supervising manager" at Jake's Moving & Storage - not the supervisor that I had worked with on the day of the move. He indicated that he had seen my reviews and apologized that I had a bad experience. He also asked if I would be willing to remove the review. He indicated that the supervisor who was evasive and intimidating was having "the worst day of his life" and is usually highly rated in reviews. He also indicated that the foreman who was so inappropriate with me was a contractor and not a direct employee of the company and claimed they do not plan to work with that particular contractor again. He stated that the other two workers are permanent employees of the company and not picked up at a 7-11 that day. He provided reasons why the truck was 4 hours late, the foreman was incompetent, and the supervisor was unkind. He was very nice and the conversation was pleasant, but he did indicate more than once that they would like the review removed. I gave it some careful consideration. I cannot say one way or another who is telling the truth in this situation as I do not know any of these people, and all of their accounts of the day and who is at fault are contradictory. I would have no way of knowing how often they are late, how often the truck breaks down, if the supervisor is usually more professional/less intimidating, or if the foreman is still working with the company. Either way, everything I stated in my original review really happened, and if the explanation I was provided is not true or contractors are generally just not well-vetted by this company - it could easily happen to someone else in the future. Bad to WORSE- I filed a complaint with the BBB who rated Jakes an "A". This is the response I got from Jakes through the BBB. Pay close attention to the facts that: 1. Jakes offered $200.00 (which is really only $100.00 off because of the fee to use a credit card). I declined as the general manager said he needed to "investigate" the matter. I never received a call which is why I ended up posting a negative review. Isn't that what reviews are for? 2. Then he says he wanted to promote "productive dialog". Jakes does not understand one thing though- you need to actually answer the phone or respond to an email to have a dialog. I called and emailed them four times over two weeks and never got a response. 3. "blackmail"..."threats"...seriously? The only one making demands is Jakes by telling me I need to show "restraint" in order to resole the matter. At first I encouraged my friends to make sure they read all the small print and get a min and maximum of the estimate...at this point I have changed my stance to...PLEASE, NO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. Attn: To whom it may concern, After much deliberation and careful thought, we at Jake's Moving & Storage believe, that the Consumer (XXX) simply do not wish to resolve this matter amicably. The Consumer (XXX) was recently engaged in an online activity, posting numerous negative reviews in various websites regarding his overall moving experience with us. In his bias negative reviews, the Consumer (XXX) simply bashing Jake's Moving & Storage and its employees on all levels, twisting and manipulating facts. Consumer's recent actions clearly creates a contradiction, between a sincere attempt to resolve an issue with the Service Provider and the strong desire for provocation. The only reason Jake's Moving and Storage is getting 2 stars is because the moving crew that handled my move was so professional and great to work with. They showed up early, moved quickly and efficiently, and were very polite and helpful. The General Manager, John, however provided incorrect information when booking my move, and was completely unprofessional and condescending when he was called the day of my move. I was told by John that part of the contract was that the movers would re-assemble any furniture that they move, however I was then told the morning of my move that since I was moving furniture out of a storage unit that had already been disassembled (which was known at the time the contract was signed he took down the address and floor of the storage unit), the movers do not re-assemble furniture that they did not take apart. My movers, Sitou, Cristian and Bret, were so friendly and so accommodating that they said they had no problem reassembling furniture if time allowed, which wasn't an issue since the entire move took less than 3 hours and I was quoted for "no less than 4 hours". Then came time for payment, which I had already placed the $100 deposit for the services weeks prior on my credit card, and it was never mentioned that if I didn't pay by cash or cashier's check the day of, then there would be an additional 5% charge for using a credit card. I was bothered by the fact that John didn't mention this when I called to check-in and confirm my movers the day before, but it was now moving day and the guys were really helpful so it was what it was at that point. Then I realize that I am being charged the 5% on the FULL AMOUNT of the move, including the already paid $100 which was already processed on my credit card weeks ago, not just for the remaining balance. This I had a problem with, and this must be a problem they run into frequently because the movers did not hesitate to call John back at the office and put him on speaker phone. John was immediately defensive and condescending over the phone, talking over me and telling me to "read my contract more carefully next time". I replied with that my contract also says I was quoted for a move that would take "no less than 4 hours" so since it only took less than 3 hours of their time could that make the difference for them, and I was quickly received with a snarky "I'm not negotiating and changing contracts the day of". Moving days are stressful enough, and I didn't need to continue the back and forth with the unprofessional and patronizing manager. I paid the balance + 5% of the full amount, and once I was settled into my new place, I reviewed my contract which specifically reads "Methods of Payment - Only the following will be accepted upon your Reservation: Credit/Debit Cards (We accept all major Credit Cards/Debit Cards, preferred MC or VISA. No Processing Fee will apply upon your One-Time Deposit Payment." Looks like I was correct to challenge that, and the GM should also read his contracts with clients more carefully. The movers are excellent; the office needs lessons on customer service and professionalism. read more

My whole experience with Jake's Moving and Storage was excellent. It started with my initial conversation with John. He was very nice and informative about every aspect of the move. When I told him that I was moving on Sept 11th, we had a moment of silence for all those that were lost on that day. He scored major points by doing that. :) On the day of the move, the 3 movers showed up on time and they did a wonderful job. They wrapped my furniture and were very careful with my items. I was impressed by the speed of the gentleman and they kept the talking to a minimum. They were all business. One item was damaged during the move. Both the mover and John apologized for the damage. The claim was processed within 2 business days. I used to work in the claims department of a cargo shipping company, so I was already aware of the claim procedures. Jake's Moving and Storage responded to the claim and settled the claim much faster than the average claim time for their industry. I would recommend Jake's Moving and Storage to anyone and I plan to use them again once I buy a house. read more

HORRIBLE SCAM EXPERIENCE. This experience was horrible, resulting in 2 additional days of unauthorized charges, verbally abusive language from the manager, and scam behavior from company. Contracted for 6 hours/1 day (1-bed apartment of items, some bulk furniture to trash on-site). Loading dock scheduled 2pm, destination 5pm. Moving day=driver called apprx 1230 to request earlier destination load time due to being finished first job early, and not needing full time. Movers showed up around 2, continuously stated on-time throughout day. Approx. 5pm received destination notice loading dock closed at 7, movers could take additional time once in. Driver confirmed adequate time to arrive by 7 with all items, was told to prioritize moving stuff, not bulk trash, if necessary. Movers began moving slow, shuffling items around, moving different piles (I had back injury, but began moving items quickly down to elevator and truck, leaving items). Driver finished ¾ loading, barely made 7pm dock, stated would finish job (needing additional hour) that week. Writer confirmed second move date with driver (scheduled for 2pm on second day, NOT TOLD WOULD BE CHARGED), driver clearly notified destination dock closed at 7, and received assurance there was ample time, was only additional hour of work. Day 2-HORRIBLE. Received text from driver that move was scheduled, but additional paperwork required from main office (no contract, just confirmation of what they were finishing). Unable to reach manager throughout the day, getting panicked (received continuous texts from driver scheduled for 2). Took day off, moved items/trash with back injury, waited all day. Finally reached manager at 2pm, who was hostile and condescending. HOSTILE OR UNPROFFESSIONAL REMARKS= minimum charge of 4 hours per day, even if drivers only needed 1, Second date to finish a move was not guaranteed, manager does not have to do business if he doesn't feel like it, and that no coordination between driver and this writer should have taken place without deferring to the manager for approval. Manager emphasized multiple times that he was in charge, didn't appreciate being disrespected by having the movers coordinate without him, that he would require double the fee for the second move date (DISPUTED, DID NOT AGREE, CONTINUED TO STATE THEY WERE FINISHING ORIGINAL JOB WITH 1 ADDITIONAL HOUR). Emphasized he was clearly delaying and dragging out job, concerned items wouldn't be moved. Manager stated he would send email confirming move, then comments like "you don't have an iphone to check your email?" "You can't figure out how to check email?". Call was closed after manager stating he would send email and confirm with drivers. At 430pm, still no movers, unable to reach manager, very panicked. Manager finally answered while in store, yelling so loudly through phone I had to leave. COMMENTS FROM MANAGER= "don't have to do business when being disrespected" "don't have to do business with a woman who couldn't even coordinate a loading dock time" "not required to do business with a woman who spoke in a disrespectful tone to him". Manager hung up several times after stating he was in charge, did not have to do business with anyone being disrespectful to him, and that he wouldn't be "talked over by a woman who couldn't even set up a loading dock time". Manager finally agreed to send drivers after multiple distressed calls, again...NO CONTRACT SIGNED OR VERBAL AGREEMENT OF MINIMUM CHARGE. Driver continuously texting they were arriving soon, ample time to finish. Texted driver, who indicated they were running late, but would be able to fully finish the job. Relayed interaction with manager to drivers, who stated he had multiple issues in past, doesn't like being "disrespect" by people going over his head, and to ignore his yelling, they would get items out. They began moving in such inefficient and slow manner (despite constant prompts and my assistance (such as hauling small items one by one instead of loading carts of items). Mover stated they were running behind because manager hadn't had paperwork prepared and they got late start. Contacted manager over concerns that truck STILL WASN'T LOADED at 6pm. Manager stated again "movers aren't robots, they are tired, no guarantee of how fast they will move", that the only way to ensure finishing in one day was to be the first move on the books, and that could also take two days if they were tired, and stated that given the 7pm loading dock time, a clear 3rd day with a minimum 4 hour charge would be required. Manager stated again he did not have to do business with anyone disrespecting him, they would keep items overnight for hourly charge. Finally agreeing this was ridiculous, and to delivery. 3rd day-equally insane. Attempted shuffling items to drag out time, I refused to sign contract or agree to additional work. Was charged for 3 days (1,440 over), additional lease dates at first location, and 3 days off work. HORRIBLE. read more

The price came in right on the estimate - I close the all-inclusive rate and it worked out fine. They came on time and took great care of our stuff. Jake's Moving and Storage just completed a rather small move in-town for our CEO. Even though it was a lighter load, they treated us like we were their only priority. John provided an accurate quote, gave us some good suggestions and showed great patience as I changed the date and time - all within the week of the move! Come the day of the move and we realized we had not reserved the loading dock and needed a certificate of insurance before anything could proceed. Called John and got this taken care of in under 30 minutes with a great attitude! He told me not to sweat the small stuff - never pointed fingers and his level of service stayed rock solid. Then when the movers were finally able to go up and begin the move, the experience did not change. The crew took great care, and were very fast and extremely professional. I'm an active duty Naval Officer with over 26 years of honorable service. My family and I have made 9 PCS moves around the world. However, Jake's Moving Company was the "worst" experience by far. First, Jake and Company refused to visit our home to provide an accurate price quote. As a result, I ended being "charged" any additional $2K for the move; and several prices of valuable "jewelry" mysteriously disappeared! Secondly, Company never provided the customary "inventory sheet" to document house goods. Thirdly, I believe one of the moving crew was an "undocumented" person. Police could not find "person" to ask about "missing" jewelry. Lastly, I would never under any circumstances recommend Jake's Moving & Storage to any military member. We hired Jake's moving company to move our things from our house to storage. We got a price quote over the phone without him coming to see our things. We asked him to come see the things but he said they go by rooms. The quote seemed reasonable and we needed movers to do the job soon so we went ahead with him. He sent the agreement by email we signed and sent it back by email. The movers showed up on time but were very slow and just kept going about in circles. They were taking things from rooms and dumping them outside in front of our garage. We had packed everything in boxes and sealed them. They had to take apart three bed frames, one dining table. They spent the whole day to pack only beds into their truck. When we questioned them about their pace they just shrugged us off. There were three of them, two stayed in the truck most of the time and one was left to take things to them in the truck. Finally our whole family had to step in and take more than half of our items to the truck for them. They had only 2 hours of the ten hours left to drive to our storage place and unload the things into the storage. We continued to help them but they went way over the time. They spent twice the estimated time given and charged the overage expensive rate. Jake was very nasty and threatened us. We paid him every penny he demanded so we will feel safe. We will never use this company again and will not recommend them to anybody. read more

I hired Jake's Moving and Storage to move my household goods on 31 May 2013 from Maryland to Virginia, about 55 miles. In summary, I would rather move every piece of furniture, box, clothing article and everything I else I own myself than ever dealing with Jake's Moving and Storage again. They are a bunch of amateurs, completely incompetent and uncaring, and should really find a different profession. In the end, I am extremely upset that I paid nearly $2500 for a day of stress, sweat, labor and exhaustion...I could have experienced that for free. This experience is seriously similar to multiple 'horror' stories I read about online prior to choosing a moving company. I chose Jake's Moving and Storage due to their good feedback. It is clear that I made a tremendous mistake by doing so. Don't make the same mistake. My family's experience moving experience with Jake's Moving and Storage was anything but pleasant. Starting with the movers not arriving at my Maryland home until 10:00am, which is extremely late to start a move, and ending with them not leaving my new Virginia house until 3:30 the next morning. I was quoted for 9 hours, and it ended taking them over 15 hours! They claimed they could move my household belongings in one trip with one large truck and 4 guys; however, instead it took them two trips, 5 guys and my wife and I helping. This is after I demanded they come out before the move to inspect my household goods and ensure they could do it in one trip. This in itself is a prime example of their incompetency. Because they were still unpacking our belongings at 2-3 am the next morning, my wife and I had to help finish unloading, unpacking certain items to remove their company's pads, blankets, etc to just get them out of our home. My wife and I of course didn't receive any compensation/discount for stepping in and helping out. It was taking them so long I ended up having them put much of our goods in our garage instead of having them place them where they belonged as that would have only taken much longer. To top it off, they didn't even get all of our belongings from our old house; I had to finish moving my other stuff throughout the weekend. Further, their movers damaged several places of our Maryland home; specifically, the knocked about a 6 inch x 8 inch hole in the ceiling of our stairwell, and made very large/long scratches/marks on the walls. Though they attempted to patch the ceiling hole, it was only partially done; it was still VERY obvious there was damage there and the color of the material they used was completely different than the ceiling paint (ie: they didn't care). They didn't make any offer to fix the scratches on the walls. I conducted another walk-through the following day, and I noticed that the banister/railing on my basement stairs was damaged and very loose. I watched them attempt to take the railing off to get a sofa from our basement. While doing so, they apparently stripped several screws. In addition, the movers ramming/bumping the railing caused it to become extremely loose and damaged at the bottom. It is most concerning that they just left it in that condition and acted as though nothing was wrong. Separately, there caused NUMEROUS scratches on my hard wood floor in several locations throughout the middle level of the home. This is Brazilian Cherry hard wood...ie: very expensive. To date, they have made no effort to fix this, didn't even apologize for causing this damage. The company stated that they would send out a repairman to conduct some of the repairs. However, the repairman and/or the company didn't show up twice. I ultimately had to coordinate with a third party repairman to patch the hole and in the ceiling and paint it, in addition to fixing the banisters on my basement stairs. I eventually did receive a check from their company a week or two later. However, I still have numerous scratches on my hardwood floors, as well as on my walls in the basement and stairway. They didn't seem to care a bit about this damage, and clearly didn't offer to fix it. read more

Did a great job on the estimate and the rate was low in price and accurate. They did not charge for some of the extras that other companies would make you pay for and they did the job in the time allocated. I had a minor question and had been promptly contacted by them. They were willing to explain the situation to my satisfaction. The individual in charge of operations was very professional and expressed her concern and care to be sure that I was happy . had to hire Jake's moving & storage because the original moving company (Maubaum Moving) took 14 hours to pack a 1 bedroom apartment and never completely finished packing any room. Although the 2 gentlemen were very congenial, the job was not completely done and they weren't available to finish the job I ended up paying for anyway. I had to pay for the extra time I was in my apartment because the items left were to big to transport in my car. John, from Jake's Moving & Storage, was very accommodating and patient listening to my dilemma and the workers (3 packers) were prompt and very FAST. After the moving nightmare I experienced with the previous company, I was skeptical and quite nervous. These guys are great. I hired a different company for my move and they weren't capable of getting a couple of large pieces of Restoration Hardware furniture out of my 1 bedroom in DC. In a panic, on a Sunday afternoon, I googled Jake's Moving and Storage and asked them for help. His team showed up an hour later with a truck and all the tools needed. These guys got a monster of a couch down a very tight staircase when the other company wasn't able to figure it out. Not only did they get it out, they moved it to my new apartment and were able to improvise and take off the window of the living room to fit the couch in. No other moving company that I've ever worked with has had the skills and the tools to do something like this. These guys are truly pro's. You can find any guys with a truck and some strength to lift the heavy stuff from point A to point B. But John came up with solutions. They took the window off in a matter of seconds. I really wish I had called them before booking my move with the other company. I will never use another company again. If you have high end, large furniture that might need more than just getting it through the doorway, these guys are who you call. read more
