Good Mexican is hard to find in this town, and needless to say, I really liked it here. I like a certain style of Mexican, and this seems to fit my bill for a lot of different reasons. Minus the fact that it's located in stupid dumb Pontiac, I was loving everything about Jalepenos. I was craving Mexican and strolled in here on a whim Saturday night for some food. It's totally family owned and that was exactly what I needed. No corporate stuff, trying to hard or signature dishes by an overpaid chef. Strait up good Mexican! I scoured the menu and loved everything I saw. Tons of dishes to choose from with many options of how to order. I had a hard time deciding on what to get, but I went with the 3 taco dinner that came with rice and beans. I also got a free bucket of chips with 3 types of salsa that were quite tasty (and hot!) when they came out. I'm hardly a salsa connoisseur, but I did try two of the three that were put out in front of me. I couldn't really taste any difference between them, secretly hoping one red sauce would be hotter then the other. The salsa was good, but nothing to brag about. When my dinner plate came out, I was amazed at how big the portions were. Very colorful display and everything was good to boot. I loved the tacos, and couldn't finish everything so I took home my leftovers for later. Very good indeed. I didn't spend that much here either, and am glad that I have a place like this close to home. One of the better places that has a nice casual vibe, family run and doesn't try to hard to impress. They impress me in other ways, like price point, atmosphere, and more "down home" Mexican versus places who try to hard and do cooking segments on channel 2 on the weekends. LOL They also serve breakfast here and open at 10 AM, which I would love to try one time to see what it's all about. On my short list of places to go and eat at on the weekends for a late breakfast for sure! Anyways, definitely worth a stop in here and I will gladly return in the future. This is a neighborhood staple! Best Mexican food in the area. My coworkers introduced me and now my friends and family eat here religiously. I have always received great service and their facilities are clean. I would definitely recommend to those in town or in surrouding cities. Very fast service and definitely great for lunch dates. Came yesterday for a late lunch. Chips were great and variety of salsas! Our food was delicious and generous portions of chicken on my torta y taco tradicionales. The bill was more than expected- was charged for cheese didn't order. Manager said the waitress asked if I wanted everything and I said yes and that I should know that includes cheese. Since I ate it and didn't send back I was charged for cheese. The cheese def made it better! Whatever. A notice on menu should indicate up charge, so customer can be aware!! read more

If you know me and my reviews, you already know I am a connoisseur of Latin food! I take it seriously and am a tough critic. Having been in the city of Pontiac only for a day, I had to try this little spot. It appeared authentic so it was a must try on my list! Yep indeed. Authentic, classic good food! Salsa selection was spot on! Spicy and smoky, mild and an avocado cream for the wimps but it was not a wimpy dip. Made from fresh ingredients, we noshed on the chips and dips until food came. Well worth the wait! I loved every bite of my chicken enchiladas, refried beans and rice. My family enjoyed sharing a few fried ice creams served in the edible fried tortilla! They also have flan...sorry no churros... I doubt I will return but that is ONLY because I don't live near here. We saw good reviews and decided to give it a shot. We were very impressed! Good Mexican food is hard to come by and this place has it!! Family owned and it shows! The service was great! The ambience was fun! It was very decorated for Halloween which made it fun for the kiddos! The chips were served with three different salsas. They were all good but I liked the red one the best. I had the beef burrito and it was super good with melted cheese on top. Beans and rice were fresh with good flavor. My kids had the tacos and a combo plater and said it was good. It is really hard not to like this place. Simple is good! Simple is easy fast service, an easy to read menu and a specials board when you walk into the place. I've been here two times and its a pretty awesome place. The decor is nothing fancy and a bit outdated, as with most of the places I prefer to eat. The service is very friendly and fast. Both times, we have come in we have been offered a variety of Agua Fresca, which we've been happy to try. Watermelon on our first visit and Cantaloupe on our second visit. I think the cost is around 2 dollars. The menu is an internal fusion of a Mexican Village type place, taco trucks, and a good "Gringo" type place. Last night I opted for the Combination #4 (9.50), which includes bean and queso fresco tostada, chicken flauta, "Gringo" chicken taco, beans, and rice. It is a ton of food and it all appears and tastes as if it is very fresh. I have to pass on the large Modelo draft (2.50) special so can can share a deep fried ice cream in a cinnamon/sugar tortilla bowl.This may be the perfect desert. The last time we came we were so full and as we walked out, we agreed we would come for dinner OR desert. read more

I was craving Mexican food (I'm always craving Mexican food, honestly) and forced my girlfriend to come to Jalapenos with me. But not really. It was her idea. The chips came out in a weird way... three containers with three smaller containers to pour them into. I've never seen salsa served this way -- it makes me feel like they reuse what isn't used. If they don't, they waste about a cup of salsa per person. There's a mild red salsa, a spicier roasted pepper kind of salsa, and then an avocado-y verde salsa. The avocado salsa (whatever it's properly called) was easily the best one... honestly addicting, and it may just be the best salsa I've ever had. My girlfriend and I went through three baskets of tortilla chips before our meals came out. NO SHAME! We each ordered MAMBO (combo) numbah (number) FAHV (five), which is a chicken flauta, bean tostada, hard shell or soft shell beef or chicken taco, rice, and beans for $9.50. The amount of rice and beans they give you is moderately insane -- at least a cup and a half, possibly two full cups, of rice AND beans. The other side of the plate was the taco and flauta, with the tostada on another plate. It turns out it was all really good. Jalapenos isn't 100% authentic Mexican food, but it's still better than most Mexican restaurants. The portions are good sizes, and the food's above average too. Some ground beef in Mexican restaurants that I've gone to have looked sort of scary, but the beef here actually looks not like grounded up cow heart with puddles of grease. Jalapenos would probably be my first choice for sit-down Mexican food in Pontiac. I think Carnival Market's food is a little bit better, but I'm not too keen on the idea of eating food in a grocery store, although they have recently redone part of their market to make it more of a sitdown restaurant. Well worth trying if you aren't expecting 100% authentic Mexican food. Very good all-around, and I'll be back. read more

Love this place! I've always gotten combination platters or taco played. But this time I ordered the pozoli (sp?) and a couple of tacos traditional with cabeza meat. The pozoli was like coming home to a big got bowl of comfort food that I've never had before. It was overloaded with tender and flavorful meat. Cilantro and onion accompaniment was a plus. The tacos were so flavorful. I took home what soup I couldn't finish. Staff was in top of things even with a waitress in training. Everyone was super friendly. This is a regular stop for my wife and I. I was glad to try something different on this visit. read more

As authentic as being in anywhere in South America and I've been to many different countries there so I am speaking from experience. I've turned many friends and coworkers onto this place and no complaints, only compliments and one that stands out the most is my Mexican friend who said that the rice was as good as their mother's and this was the first place he's ever been to that impressed. Portions are decent and if you've never had pollo enchiladas mole, I highly recommend trying it! I went here to pick up lunch for some coworkers. Upon sitting down to eat one person said in her Steak and Shrimp Fajita, they had put no shrimp in the dinner. I looked and It was pieces of meat with a bunch of cheese on top. I called back (guilty) because I was the one who picked up the order. And plus I'm not going to check others peoples orders from work, I expect them just to be right! A lady picked up the phone and said that I could bring the order back if I wanted, I said that wouldn't be possible because I was at work already. "Well if you bring the order back we can just throw the shrimp in there". "Well that's the only way, because the owner said he won't comp it". "I just checked he forget to put the shrimp in there" So this lady who I picked up food for is at work, doesn't eat lunch, has to save her dinner which she did not (nor could) eat, drive at some point to this restaurant in Pontiac, and pick up an order of food they got wrong in the first place.
