Can't trust this guy, full of errors on my tax return, he doesn't check his work and he relies on his client to find all errors for him.

TLDR: James Chu is the gold standard for accounting and customer service excellence. Back in 2020, I was looking for an accountant for the 1st time in my life because as we all know, as we grow in life, our circumstances become trickier. It was to the point where I refused to do it on my own. I called multiple accountants and they all gave me the runaround of you have to come in and was very vague about pricing. Then I met James... James Chu answered the phone with a friendly tone and listened to all of my concerns. He recommended that for ease of convenience that I can upload my docs via DropBox and he would handle the rest. After a few days, he reached out and we hopped on a phone call and he explained all the terminology as well as breakdown by line item why he did what he did. It gave me assurance that he was knowledgable, patient, and was able to communicate effectively. Fast forward to 2023, I had the exact same experience and he even gave me some pointers. You want James as your accountant because just like life, he will grow with you and adjust to whatever life throws at you. I will say that as a disclaimer, everyones situation is different and mine happened to be the more typical straightforward W2, mortgage, and some credits. If you have more non-standard situations, that's on you to brief James on what it is you are trying to achieve. James is an honest man and he will never do illegal things just so that you can get "more refund money." His purpose is to be ethical and educate people like us how to navigate choices with better decision making. I hired James to do my taxes this year and I was disappointed. I do not recommend this CPA at all for the following reasons. - When I sat down with him to go over my taxes back in Feb/March, I didn't get the feeling he was at all interested in learning about my tax situation. He basically took the information from me and entered them into the computer. I felt like I just went to one of those chain tax preparation places. If you want to truly understand your tax situation, you have to ask him the same question in multiple ways as most of the time, his answers are short and do not really explain anything. - James also made a mistake on my federal return where he incorrectly entered $500 for the child tax credit when the paperwork I gave him showed I had a child tax credit of $1750. I don't know how he got the $500 child tax credit figure. This mistake resulted in a letter from the IRS asking for more money with additional interest/penalty. I do have to give credit where credit is due - he is quick in responding to your emails. Based on my recent experience with him, I can't in honesty recommend this CPA. read more

I would not recommend James as an accountant. He made a couple of mistakes on my returns that resulted in my paying much higher taxes. He made basic mistakes such as categorizing my long-term captain gains from stocks as short-term captain gains. He also depreciated my rental property by lower than it could have been depreciated. There's a lot of things that can be said about this accountant's accounting practice. I can sum it in three words: sloppy, disorganized, and incompetent. I had the displeasure of working with James Chu this tax season 2022, and the experience was very negative. James Chu eff'ed up my taxes, and I had to re-file my taxes via an amendment with another tax preparer who knew stock investing, employer restricted stock units, and cryptocurrency better than this guy (James Chu). James Chu spent less than 10 minutes on my personal income taxes, and my personal income taxes in 2022 had a lot of complicated tax events. In the end, using James Chu left me me paying double to correct his mistakes with another accountant. James Chu charged me around $300 to do my taxes, but I ended up spending $3,000 on top of what I paid James Chu to correct his incompetence. To add salt to injury, when I emailed him to ask if he can correct his errors on my tax returns, he refused to correct those errors and stated it was done correctly. For anyone who has a complicated tax matter that included trading stocks, had employer granted stock units, Roth IRAs, Traditional IRAs, 401ks, HSAs, real estate, multiple state taxation, and cryptocurrency, I'd advise to stay away from James Chu. He has not kept up with recent tax laws. To quote one of the things he said in our encounter, "Isn't the recent Roth IRA contribution income cutoff $80,000? I don't know. I haven't checked." He's better off doing general "book accounting" for his business pals and NOT tax accounting for the rest of us. For the average Joe (including you and I) and those taxes, me thinks not! Run. Added more information: I'm very disappointed in James very juvenile behavior/response and revealing my personal tax information including the "wash sales" issue on the Internet, and on this platform. I never revealed any in-depth details about my tax situation than a surface level/overview for James' quality of service in my Yelp review, but wash sales is a topic that dives right into the heart of my tax returns. To have James divulge this kind of very sensitive information Yelp s definitely concerning. To potential future clients, this is the kind of the stuff he will be doing to YOU. To James, you are breaking the law and violating section 7216 of the Internal Revenue Code. Revealing a client's tax information in a public forum without any prior consent is illegal. read more

His office was difficult to identify, it was actually UNIDENTIFIABLE, from the outside, it appears to be a retail wholesale place. Wow! I am so impressed with James Chu. I was calling around to find a CPA to file taxes for my parents' trust. Some CPA firms told me that they didn't do trust returns. From our first conversation I knew that he was knowledgeable and that it would be a good fit. James was easy to communicate with over the phone and via email and texts. I would have give him a zero if there's this option. He messed up both my friend and mine tax return. Had to call IRS to make the adjustments afterwards. He is pretty quick but his work is so sloppy. He missed several important information just to rushes through my case. Plus, it's not cheap either. DON'T work with him if you have any other options.
