The worst customer service I've ever had from start to finish. Both receptionists are casually rude - answering people in abrupt fashion, not providing any information via email (requesting to call them), and refusing to do anything, other than bare minimum, to deal with insurance. I requested my VSP WellVision Exam results multiple times and they never responded. I have medical condition (severe astigmatism and large differences in diopters between eyes) that always has been covered by my insurance (good one from Big Tech company , not a cheap one), but they refused to even inquire about it to my insurance company. They refused to provide me a quote via email either and spent all time on the phone telling me what they cannot do. The Dr. PENSHORN is nice though and I am not sure if she aware of how rude her staff is . read more

I went to this doc in March of 2020. The optician offered digital lenses which never worked (they did refund this part). After several, several visits, glasses exchanged, contacts exchanged, we eventually reverted back to the old prescription. They were extremely unhelpful in this process- it was a total waste of time and money. read more

The Dr.'s bedside manner is a *little* chilly but I'll take competence over warmth. Some of the rudest staff (receptionists and doctor) I've ever had the misfortune of interacting with. Was going to buy lenses from here due to convenience, but a final unsatisfactory customer service interaction tipped me over the edge. They even had the audacity of trying to deny their rudeness and get me to make a followup when I explicitly told them that I would rather go elsewhere. Not worth your time and energy. Edit/Response to the comment below, which makes me frustrated because it feels like gaslighting: Just wanted to say that I am giving a totally honest opinion of your customer service. I will happily answer follow up questions, as long as they are asked in a polite and reasonable manner-- which did not happen. Don't twist the story. I'm so happy with the service and glasses I got from James Leonard. (My last pair of progressive glasses were from Warby Parker and I was so disappointed. They were inexpensive but the quality and clarity of the lenses were just poor.) I'm so glad I splurged and went here the next time. The customer service was very helpful and the staff very patient. I brought my own prescription from my optometrist so I can't judge the exams they give but the frames and Zeiss lenses are spot on. FYI_My eyes get tired and red after being on a computer all day so I added the extra "blue" tint they offer to reduce eye strain when using a computer. It works! My eyes are less dry and don't hurt! It was fine. Good eye doctor. Got the job done. Was looking for a place that is welcoming and friendly and grateful for our business but this was not it for us. Not the warmest reception (the man). Felt judged. The lady worker seemed much kinder and down to earth than the man and the eye doctor. Eyeco set the standard for us--always the epitome of respect and kindness and warmth. Eyeco has moved to Wmsburg and we will be traveling there from now on. Another person could have a different experience here. So give them a try. ;) But not for us. read more

Came in here to find a pair of sunglasses for our son. When we asked to see some options, we were immediately told that what they had was" not cheap $100". Wow. First, $100 is cheap. Secondly, we didn't even ask for pricing. We just wanted to see options. The guy with the heavy accent literally put the Giggle website in front of us, showed us $10 pair of sunglasses on the site, and told us "that's where you should go". Then when confronted with his rudeness, he tried to back peddle and said that he wasn't being rude. I'm sorry, but sizing people up and throwing them into the arms of another retailer clearly shows that you are rude and not into customer service. I would highly recommend going elsewhere. Got a nice pair of glasses here. With VSP the cost came to a reasonable cost and the lenses are of decent quality. Shaved off a star because the cust service left a bit desired and also because one of the lenses is kind of loose and prone to popping out when I wipe them. However, on 2nd visit, "not so good" (read it with a Trump voice) :) Don't come here if you're just looking to get "reasonably priced frames". Seemed they would not really want to deal with you unless you can shell out hundreds of bucks for a silly frame. C'mon. read more

I have purchased both my regular glasses and sunglasses here, with a great experience on both occasions. The specific frames I had in mind for my regular glasses were not in stock, but they called in and ordered them while I was in the store and I had them in my hands less than a week later! Sunglasses I took home same day as purchased! I checked around with the other shops in the neighborhood, and from the info I got over the phone, this one was the most reasonably priced. There was also a pretty good coupon on the website that I took with me and was redeemed without a problem. Staff has been friendly and helpful every time I have been there (including stopping in to get my frames readjusted a few days after picking them up), and has been very good at helping me find what I want within the price range I ask for. read more

My fiance got me a gift certificate for James Leonard for my birthday so that I could get prescription sunglasses. I've had a lot of trouble getting Rx sunglasses because I have a really strong and difficult prescription, but James Leonard were able to fulfill my order easily, and all I needed to do was bring in a copy of my script (they also offer eye exams on site certain days of the week). I was very happy with the selection of sunglasses they offered and even had trouble deciding which ones to get. The staff were not only friendly and helpful, but exceedingly knowledgeable. A few days after I submitted my order, I called the store to check to see when they would be ready. I was told that my lenses were scheduled to arrive that afternoon, and my order was made a priority because I was going away over the weekend and wanted to wear the sunglasses. I was able to swing by on my way home from work to pick them up. Because my Rx is so difficult, the glasses were not as dark as I wanted them to be, so I took them back that same day, and they said I could take them for the weekend and just return them the next week to get them darkened, no charge. They are really flexible and accommodating. Even though the glasses took a bit longer than expected to get darkened, the shop called me to let me know the timeframe and the reason it was taking longer, which I appreciated. If you ever need sunglasses or glasses, I would highly recommend visiting James Leonard. It's worth it. read more

I called them and decided I'll pick up my order and see the place and see what else they have. Great selection of unique stylish frames. I like it because they set themselves apart in the product that they carry. Optometrist is also available, thorough and professional. I'd recommend you call ahead of time and check for availability. Ever so often they have nice stuff on sale, but generally these are luxury frames and will cost a pretty penny. I actually lucked out, bought an expensive dita pair and received a pair of Ray bans for free. Cool and friendly staff. Saved me the shipping from the online order and gave me some free rows. This involved multiple emails per day, photos sent back and forth, and more than several phone conversations over the course of a week. The staff here are incredibly unprofessional and more concerned with flirting with hipsters or up-selling customers on absurdly overpriced glasses than actually being helpful. The doctor had no clue how to even read the prescription on my current glasses. He just stood there literally scratching his head, completely confused and helpless. I ended up leaving the appointment somehow knowing less about the health of my eyes and what kinds of lenses I might need. What a waste of time. On top of that, they completely screwed up my insurance information and had the audacity to charge my provider over $300 for what turned out to be a completely inaccurate eye refraction. Do yourself a favor and go to one of the dozens of other opticians in Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill. There's no way they could be worse than this place. read more

I have Davis Vision insurance and came in to ask about getting contacts under my insurance. The woman at the counter was very forceful and rude. She pushed me to get glasses instead (she said they would be a better deal - although the actual amount covered by insurance is very similar). When I told her I was sure I wanted contacts, she only read me part of the insurance plan and told me the lens I wanted probably wouldn't be fully covered and the fitting for the lens definitely wouldn't be. I checked with the insurance company, who told me that this woman was wrong and as long as I ordered the lens under the Davis Vision formulary (which did in fact carry the contacts I wanted), it would be fine. The whole trip was a very unpleasant experience and a waste of time. The staff was rude and unhelpful, and worst of all, completely wrong about the coverage I had. I would avoid this place. I went to Oculus 20/20 instead and they were much more helpful and pleasant. read more
