I've been a patient, and friend of Dr. Muir, Marcie, and staff, going on 2 decades now-they are like family, and I love them all, very much. In the beginning my teeth were so bad, and neglected, that I thought I would never smile again. My former dentist said there was nothing he could do, and that I should find another dentist. I thank God I found Dr. Muir. Over a period of time, with the help of his skilled, and kind assistant, Marcie, he performed a masterpiece of cosmetic dentistry. I have seen my share of dentists over the years and I have been with Dr. James Muir about 7 years now. I have never met a more gentle and kind dentist in all of those years. Dr. Muir also solved two problems at once during one of my many crowns. I had crooked bottom teeth and I had to replace 4 of them with crowns. Dr. Muir came up with a plan that would create 4 new crown molds as straightened teeth. When he was done, my whole lower bite looked like I had braces put on and straightened them all out. Dr. Muir, probably saved me in the hundreds that I would have spent on braces to straighten out my teeth. When I first moved to San Diego around nine years ago, I lived in Allied Gardens and I was referred to Dr. Muir right away. I bought a condo 2 years later in PB and was excited about not having a commute for dental visits. I then bought a house in Oceanside, 3 years ago and I still continue to see Dr. Muir, even though I have more than an hour commute each way. If you are looking for a great dentist, Dr Muir is definitely worth the trip, he is surely my pick :) read more

I made an appointment here based on such positive reviews. I called and made an appointment for Jan 16th because I was having major jaw pain that was getting worse and worse. I never got a phone call or email reminder for my appointment but I remembered because I was in pain. I filled out all of the paperwork and went back for the appointment. He just asked me some questions and said he will refer me to a specialist for TMJ. I've never been diagnosed for it before but that's what he said. At the front desk the receptionist called the place he was sending me to and they weren't taking new patients and we're referring to somewhere else. Since I was in pain she told me she would have the Doctor call over there and she would be contacting me ASAP so I could be seen and my pain helped. I didn't get a phone call for a week and a half. I was able to call Friday, Jan 25th at 2pm. They were open until 4 or 5 but they didn't answer the phone. I left a message explaining that I was in a lot of pain still and would appreciate to know if they were going to help me or if I should just look for someone else. I didn't get a phone call back until today. (Mon, Jan 28th) The doctor called me an apologized for forgetting about me. He said he called the place and said I'd have to go to a different doctor. But that I could call and get my appt. I asked him if they took my insurance since I told the receptionist that I have to use insurance. He said he wasn't sure but I need to call. So I called when I hung up. They don't take insurance at all and charge $300 just for a consultation. Also, they don't have any appointments until the end of Feb! I called the Doctor back and let him know it cost $300 to be seen and they aren't taking appointments for over a month. I asked if he knew anyone that took my insurance and he said no, but I need to be careful because I might go to a place that has a bad reputation. I don't think I trust his opinion since I can hardly sleep because I'm in so much pain, he forgot about me for a week and a half, and needed a reminder from me. Then he wanted to send me to a place that is extremely expensive and can't see me for over a month. In conclusion, he wanted me to be in major pain for 45 days. No thanks! read more

His front office was so helpful with calling my insurance company and determining my portion of the charges. I told Dr. Muir that I was very anxious about dental work and he was so kind and gentle with me. I had no pain and he gave me plenty of breaks to relax a bit. Dr. Muir and his team have changed my life. During the few years, Dr. Muir has treated me I have faced some serious health issues and major surgery. Of recent, I had a relapse with my ED (bulimia). I ghosted the world during that time. When I resurfaced after treatment, not only had I undone the progress we had made over the last couple of years, but I was scared to find out what reaction I would be met with. The warmth, genuine, and non-judgmental support I was met with was overwhelming. I went home and cried because I never could have anticipated such a welcoming. It has been less than 3 weeks and yesterday I was given a new identity. It's unexplainable how my new teeth have changed my entire face and self-image. It has been over ten years since I could floss and brush my teeth without excruciating sensitivity and pain. I look like I have $30,000 dollar veneers! To show how monumental this truly was for me, I forgot how to chew and talk normally from having such severe conditions in my mouth. I woke up at 2 am on the verge of a panic attack. I forgot my teeth were in my mouth and scared myself when I went to splash water on my face. This morning, it hit me that this blessing is not something to take for granted. The rest is up to me. Proper care and continuing treatment for my eating disorder is essential and not optional to never damage my health as I have before. Dr. Muir is an awesome dentist with a great disposition! He takes his time and explains in detail what he will be doing without talking over you. He is patient and listens to you. Julie, one of his hygienist, is the greatest hygienist that has worked on my teeth and gums! She recommended that I brush with Listerine (along with my usual brushing and flossing) and it had a profound effect on the health of my teeth and gums. She too has a great disposition and is very engaging. Simply, the best! Dr Muir and his staff are so caring and genuinely interested in what's best for the patient. I found Dr Muir when I moved to San Diego 8 years ago. I called about a horrible toothache and he saw me right away. He said I needed either a root canal or extraction and made appointments for me with an Endodontist and Oral Surgeon the same day. Fast forward to 3 years ago when Dr Muir identified my husband's oral cancer (misdiagnosed by several medical doctors) and saved his life. I was referred to Dr Muir by a friend when I moved to San Diego. I have never really had any problems with my teeth so I mostly visit for routine cleanings and x-rays. However, the front office staff is always very friendly and welcoming, they're extremely easy to work with from scheduling an appointment to reminders and they've always wcomed me by name when I walk in through the door even before I check-in. Dr Muir has excellent chair-side manner, is extremely poliete, professional, and pleasently social with current events including sports. Once after a cleaning I had a sharp portion of my tooth I didn't notice while in the office and it kept cutting my tongue, so I called them up and they fit me in right away to soften that tooth at no charge. One of the hygienists once noticed I had a small adverse reaction in my mouth which I never even noticed, she told me to stop using toothpaste with SLS in it and the reaction went away and now my mouth feels better. Most recently I had a scare from my primary care physician who thought I might have signs of throat cancer, recommended me to see my dentist, Dr Muir's office got me in the same morning I called. Although he couldn't helpe any further, he referred me to a top specialist in the area to see the same day and he was so conerned for my well-being that he gave me his personal cell number to text him the results from the specialist. Luckily it was a false alarm, but that goes to show how great of a dentist Dr Muir is and for that I will continue to be a patient as long as it's possible for me. read more

I have been going to Dr Muir for 20+ years. I recently managed to do a face-plant into concrete 4 days before my wedding, badly chipping my front teeth. I was leaving within 24 hours for my destination wedding and completely freaked out. Dr Muir saw me first thing in the morning and had an almost-perfect temporary cap done by 5pm. Dr Muir has been my dentist for the last 15 years and I wouldn't go to anyone else. I needed veneers after I got my braces off and he did such an incredible job with the color and shape that when I needed them replaced 10 years later I flew down so that he could replace them for me. He was able to expedite the making of the veneers so that I only had the temps on for one week and his staff dealt with the insurance to make sure I wasn't paying more than I had to out of pocket. They were extremely accommodating to my tight schedule and the new veneers are absolutely beautiful, and the entire procedure was totally painless!
