Both my husband and I came as new patients this week to Bird Rock Dental. We both saw Dr. Davis and had a wonderful experience. I was particularly nervous about swing a dentist during Covid-19 but Dr. Davis was so assuring about how Dentist always take great safety precautions, and that the office is taking Covid 19 precautions seriously. Dr. Davis was really friendly and the cleaning was thorough but never hurt. Truly a great experience we're glad we found such a great local dentist- it was easy to get street parking and a morning appointment. read more

The only way I could be less satisfied is if I did the work myself and left it half finished. The prices seem high especially since the dentist only comes in and finishes the work that the dental hygientist perform. I had two crowns replaced and a cavity filled. The dentist did the shots and drilling and the final cementing, but otherwise it was I think a dental hygientist did everything else. Also, I felt like I was in Mexico as there was more spanish spoken than english. Also, there was a typical bait and switch. I had complete xrays taken and was told that I needed 2 crowns replaced. At the end of the replacement ( several weeks later), they took final xrays and low and behold, I know need another crown replaced. Why wasn't it seen in the first xray. One thing that they are really good at is reminding you when your next appointment is. I received at least one email, text and phone call every day prior to the procedure for about a week. I guess they really need the money. read more

Extremely informative and patient staff! I've never had a practice take the time and care to explain how to best care for my teeth at such an in depth level! TLDR: go somewhere else unless you want to be lied to harassed until you unnecessarily pay them extra money. I was seen over 6 months ago for some regular dental care and I am still dealing with ongoing hassles from them due to confusion with insurance payment. I have Delta Dental and I gave them all my insurance information prior so there would be no confusion with in vs out of network. I didn't anticipate any problems because it's one of the most common insurance company. However BirdRock has been continuing to hassle me for payments because of out-of-network fees for the last 6 months. I have spent HOURS and COUNTLESS phone calls dealing with this. They promised it wouldn't get sent to collections as they initially took responsibility for it but suddenly a few weeks ago, after I thought everything was handled, I got a call at the end of the day saying it would go to collections the following day unless I paid immediately. I called and texted over 10 times in the following week before I finally made contact with them. They gave me a "discount" which somehow didn't decrease the amount at all- probably to just make me feel better about paying an unnecessary fee. I hate to admit it, but I finally gave up and just paid out of pocket for something my insurance covered because the time it was taking to argue with them over $100 wore me down. I still haven't gotten final confirmation its been handled despite paying. Please, avoid this place unless you want 6 months of wasting your time, lies, and unnecessary payment. read more

Amazing service! The most fabulous people work here! My teeth actually never looked better than they do now. I recently went in because I had a stain around my veneer and they completely fixed it and now it looks perfect. No one else would touch it. Previous dental offices said I would have to replace my veneer. Bird Rock Dental said not a problem and they actually fixed it. My stain is completely GONE I cannot tHank them enough. I would highly recommend anyone to come here for any reason. I recently changed a little over a year ago and I have been the happiest patient since I switched. As another reviewer noted this is not a local business it is a corporate practice run by someone in Las Vegas, in fact I just got an invoice for services performed over a year ago postmarked Las Vegas. I had the same experience as the other reviewer did where on 3 successive visits the front offices staff, dentist and finally hygienist were new with not a word spoken about why or where the others went. When my primary care physician left UCSD for Scripps both he and his office sent me emails about his upcoming departure, this from a huge health care operation, you would think a dental practice of under 10 people might show the same consideration. If you like meeting new people and don't care about continuity of treatment or developing a rapport with your dentist this is the place for you. If you are more interested in finding a dentist who cares about their practice and patients look elsewhere. Be prepared for a struggle to get your records transferred though, they are some how not very good at that. read more

Dr. Dains is truly an amazing dentist. His work is impeccable, his patience is renown and his staff is excellent as well. I tend to dislike most medical office staff because I find them to be rude and generally unpleasant, but not in the case here. They actually seem to care, and if they don't then at least they do a great job of faking it. Either way you look at it, going to the dentist, at least for me, is scary and just something I dread. So, if you're anything like me, then you will absolutely be happy at this place. For example, for every dental crown I've had done, afterwards I felt this intense sensitivity for six months. I had one done recently with Dr. Dains, and aside from my gums being sore where he had to numb me like 9 times, I have actually forgotten which tooth he worked on. It literally was perfect from day one. If you're on the fence about your current dentist and or are just looking for one, I'd 100% recommend Dr. Dains. read more

I had been a Bird Rock Dental patient since 1988. The same Dentest owned and worked there for over 20 years. The practice even changed hand twice and I continued my loyalty. The practice is now under ownership once again. And that is when my loyalty stops. I was presented with a bill of a balance of over $600. for work done in 2019 by a Dentest who was no longer working there. Keep in mind that in all of my years at BRD my bill was always paid the day of service. And a new balance after over a year? I go to my routine cleaning and of course my temperature was checked. There was even a sign saying what the temperature range was in order to be worked on. Well my temperature was too high. NOBODY SAID A WORD. I brought this up to the person taking the temperature and was told , don't worry about it. I finally was asked if I wanted a glass of water. While in the waiting room I over hear a person behind the desk talking about why they also received a bill a year after service. At another time I was told by a BRD employee that there was stacks of "new balances" that she had to process. I was not told that the business had been sold and my Dentest was gone. I was never introduced to the new Dentest until he started working on me and I asked him who he was....... He continued working on me telling me I needed work done to the tune of 4000. that could be done later that week plus pushing me to making the appointment then and there. Months later, I was called again about the outstanding balance. I told the very nice person on the phone of all of my reasons I no longer trusted BRD. That I had been treated with little regard and that I was terminating my 30 + relationship with BRD. She told me that she would send me my dental records so that I could cross check with the records from the insurance. I never received the dental records. I have never written a bad review in my life. I have been pushed too far. Beware Responding to BRD response. My issue with BRD has NOTHING to do with the previous Dentest. It dose have everything to do with the ethics in the business practices. read more

Dr. Murray and his team are wonderful! He genuinely cares, not just about your teeth but about you and your family as a whole. Although I take good care of my teeth, genetically I wasn't blessed with great oral health. Which means I probably spend more time at the dentist than others. I have never felt like I was being up-sold or overcharged at Bird Rock Dental. Dr. Murray takes a more conservative approach than other dentists I've encountered and the pricing is very fair and reasonable. He's always been open and honest. And his staff is competent, friendly and happy. You can always tell how genuine your dentist is by the happiness of their staff. Dr Reed is so gentle when it comes to dental work. He has the best touch. Unfortunately he is retiring after about over fifty years of dentistry. Dr. Murray is filling in for him. I had Dr. Murray do some filling on me. Not only was he HILARIOUS, but he was so accommodating with his time an energy. I asked him to get all the work done in one day instead of making me come back for two more appointments and he skipped his lunch just to combine all of the work into one appointment. He does all kinds of dental techniques and is very up to date with modern procedures. Half of the time spent keeping my mouth open for the procedure was involuntary- he and his assistant told funny stories the entire time and had me laughing my way through the 2.5 hours of work. 10/10 would get cavities again. I discovered Bird Rock Dental after telling a good friend about my struggle to find a dentist I really liked and trusted after I had undergone a traumatic dental procedure in a foreign country. My friend recommended Dr. Reed, who has been her family dentist since she was a little girl, and I'm so grateful she did! Dr. Reed is a compassionate man who has a real passion and joy for what he does. He is a master of his art, and a very skilled Doctor who was able to help me feel ok about getting my teeth worked on again! Now my husband and I have been going there for years, and we wouldn't consider going anywhere else. The staff are friendly and professional, and we both get our teeth cleaned by Lisa, who is gentle and thorough, and a very sweet. Make sure you give yourself time to get there and find parking. It is located between La Jolla and Pacific Beach which means a drive through one or the other, and there can be traffic depending on the time you go. For us it is always well worth the trip, and if we can, we make a day of it and have a nice stroll afterwards on the beach! read more

I've been struggling with cold sores lately and did a simple Google search to find Birdrock Dental was located just down the street from my house. Upon calling a few locations Getting quotes birdrock was only $50 for a lip treatment compared to $125 average every where else. Granted the price was a steal! I was nervous about professionalism considering how cheap. But as soon as I walked in, I was greeted with nothing but smiles and positive energy. Considering I called the day of, and they got me an appointment within the hour! There was a full house at the shop, every seat seemed to be utilized and yet no one was being ignored. My doctor was extremely friendly and we hit it off right away. (Gotta love the la Jolla community and small world) I'm far from ignorant and was very impressed with the professional and yet personal experience I received. Doc had no problems explaining/ confirming the goal and plan of execution keeping me informed and on the same page. Prior to this experience I had never gotten a lip treatment done and it was simple and relatively painless. Only 2 hours later and my sore is already feeling better. I will most definitely be returning again. (Hopefully not for a lip laser treatment) but for my other dental needs none the less. read more

AVOID! NOT Dr. Dains anymore. Dains is in another practice in La Jolla. Google him. I was initially worried when Dr. Burgess retired but then Dr. Murray came in, who was good and modernized the practice. One day I show up for a dental cleaning and, surprise, Murray is gone and a new dentist, Dr. Chad Dains is there. All is good for a couple years until I show up for my cleaning at the end of 2019 and, surprise, Dr. Dains is gone and some new guy is there. At that time, I told office staff that it's really poor patient care when they don't inform patients that the Doctor they were coming to see is no longer working there...you really need to communicate changes to patients. I went ahead and had my teeth cleaned and the new guy, starts w an F - Faust maybe? - comes in to check my teeth. He doesn't introduce himself, doesn't shake my hand, doesn't make eye contact, nothing. He checks my teeth and tells the hygienist "she's going to need a filling here". He never speaks to me, he gets up, takes off his gloves and walks out of the space. I never went back for care nor did I have the filling that I supposedly needed. Fast forward a few months as my next cleaning was approaching and I attempted to get my records transferred. It was an absolute nightmare and apparently I'm not the only person who has had the issue. Low and behold, the legit dentist I saw recently said I didn't need any fillings! So relieved I didn't let the Faust (?) guy do any work in my mouth. Bird Rock Dental is run by some guy out of Las Vegas...a corporation driven by money. If you actually want good patient care, find somewhere else to receive it. read more

Dr. Murray and staff are truly the best. I've had to have very little dental work done in my 50 years (super fortunate... good genes), but had some bonding and a filling done yesterday at Birdrock Dental. I've always been a bit of a "nervous patient" even with my routine dental cleanings every 6 months :/, but felt zero pain/"pinch" from Novocain injections, and was out of there in under 45 mins. Dr. Murray made sure my tooth bite felt normal by sanding it down to its pre-filling/bond positioning and they're perfect. Can't tell anything was done (bite-wise). AVOID AVOID AVOID!!! I went in to this dentist because I was having a major toothache and they were the fastest that could get me in. The women up front were rude and the techs were completely unprofessional. The entire time their hands were in my mouth they were talking about how they wanted to call out of work and then she looks at me and says I'm very lucky I came the week I did because they just got a new dentist and the previous ones were horrible. They drew up a bill for almost $6,000 for a root canal and crown and filling- I had no idea how ridiculous this was until I called my regular dentist. I was under the impression that a root canal was done and I would be going back for a crown, however upon examination by my actual dentist, no work was done other than drilling into my tooth to relieve some of that excruciating pain - even though that alone they charged me over $2,000 for. I disputed the charge with my bank since it was so very fraudulent and I ended up having to go to a specialist for the root canal (who told me I was lucky they didn't actually do it), and they had the audacity to challenge it and say they actually did the work. Horrible service and just blatant liars that are completely okay with stealing your money. read more

I had a filling done by Dr. Dainz the other week, and I have never met a more patient doctor. He started out by saying how he wanted to make sure I was always comfortable and if I had any discomfort or needed any type of break to raise my left hand. I think a major fear patients have when going to the dentist is not being able to communicate. Dr. Dainz eliminates this fear. Just knowing that I had the option to take a break helped me feel more relaxed and less trapped. In addition, the next day I got a follow up phone call from bird rock dental to make sure I was feeling okay after the filling. Dentists mentioned by name in the review at the beginning, Reed and Murray, have not been at this facility for over a year. It is probably some sort of chain now, but what it is for certain is inefficient and after 25 years, not our family's dentist anymore. I suspect a lot of these 5 star ratings are plants. I do not give a lot of reviews and certainly not many poor reviews, but from the beginning of the transition from the great team of Reed and Burgess retiring, my experience went plummeting down hill. Today, I received a phone call from out-of-the-blue that I owe $103.00 from 2017. It is March of 2019. Why no phone call until now? My phone number is the same. Why no mention when I was transferring my records to the new dentist? I had to come pick those records up in person after repeated requests to have sent to the new dentist. Why no mention of an outstanding bill then? Why no bill in the mail? Will be sending me to collection she stated, oh, in a friendly manner. WOW. Bird Rock Dental, you found a mistake you made in 2017 and now I am going to collection the office manager tells me? I will be in to pay this afternoon. I cannot believe a business is run this way. Thank goodness I found a different, fabulous dentist and his staff in 2017. I am so impressed with Dr. Dains and his staff! I absolutely dread going to the dentist and prolong doing so (which is probably why my teeth are so messed up) but Bird Rock Dental really goes above and beyond in making the appointment as pleasant as possible. Dr. Bains is extremely patient and knowledgable. He explains everything he is going to do before doing it so you know what to expect. He is also very calm and understanding. He is always happy to answer any questions and is never in a rush - I've always felt I had his full attention. I'm also extremely happy with his staff. I had a situation with my insurance ending on very short notice because I am starting a new job in a different city and wouldn't be able to come back and his staff made sure I would be taken care of before that happened. They were clear and concise and ensured I understood what I would be paying for. They also offered me a blanket and a pillow during my procedure! I felt so accommodated. so i had my front tooth break in half from my surfboard, and i actually had a recommendation from someone i knew in Florida. They got me an appointment within a few days with H. Kent Reed. He was a really nice guy. he ended up building the rest of my tooth from whatever they use, and within an hour it was back to normal. no pain, nothing uncomfortable, just good work. Good price too, cost about $350 to get done, i will be using him from now on as my dentist, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! read more

After Dr. Burgess retired, our family were looking for a new DDS we could trust and be comfortable with again. Never thought I could enjoy the dentist like I did with Burgess. That being said, I'm thankful to have found Dr. BreeAnn Christiansen! She is gentle, listens and explains thoroughly what she is doing and why, asking how you are with each movement. Finding a good dentist with whom I feel comfortable is a challenge. It has been years since I have had one that I fully trusted. I was very happy with how accommodating the front desk was in seeing me. I called in for an appointment and they manged to get me in the same week! I was greeted by two very friendly and smiling front office workers who had me fill out forms before the appointment. As soon as I had finished the filling out the forms, I was called back by Lisa - probably the best dental hygienist I have ever had, hands down! I was super impressed with her meticulous work ethic. She explained what she was about to do before she did it. Her philosophy is one where she puts herself in the patients shoes and how she would want her teeth to be cared for. I really felt like I was in extremely good hands. When I made my next appointment in 6 months, I made sure to request Lisa again! After the excellent cleaning was performed, I met Dr. Murray. His is super knowledgeable and very approachable. He answered all my questions as well as offered me extra advice on care of my mouth. He is a doctor that makes it extremely easy to speak to, relate to and listen to. I did not feel judged or berated for doing or not doing something. He really was a customer/patient friendly doctor with excellent chair-side manners. I never felt like he was rushing to get to the next patient either. All in all, I am very happy with Bird Rock dental and Dr. Murray and his staff (especially Lisa). I do not write a lot of reviews but in the case of Bird Rock Dental, I felt it was a must. I LOVE Bird Rock Dental! Everyone there is professional and personal at the same time. I was a bit worried when Dr Burgess retired, but he brought in Ian Murray, a second generation dentist. The office is still very well run, the dental technicians are top shelf and Dr Murray is my favorite dentist of all time. He's got that combination of technical skill and artistry it takes to make a great dentist... and, by the way, he's a very nice guy, too! Both the staff and Dr. Dains were extremely helpful and really bent over backwards to help us out. My husband needed to schedule an appointment right away due to a requirement before having heart surgery. Ashley was able to help get us scheduled first thing the next morning with Dr. Dains. They were so attentive to our needs as the patient and were able to ensure that my husband was cleared and safe to proceed with his surgery in the next couple weeks. We were not aware of the severity and connection between having a cleared dental history and heart surgery, but there definitely is! Dr. Dains and his staff were wonderful and we would definitely recommend this office. My husband already has an appointment scheduled post-surgery to come in for another cleaning and follow up.
