When I moved from SoCal to Marin 8 years ago I was dreading the process of finding a new hair stylist. I must have gotten lucky because Jenny Sack was the first stylist I tried and I have never gone anywhere else! Bottom line- Jenny is a master at cutting hair! My husband is a client of hers as well. Pricing is very reasonable (which is something I don't find myself saying often in Marin!) The salon itself is unassuming but it gets the job done. I love that it's usually pretty quiet (on most occasions I am the only client...or maybe there will be one other stylist and client there). I found this salon thanks to great photos of Elsie's work I was a fan and eager to check the salon out. Also, for the Bay Area the pricing is honest for a partial/ full highlight. This was my first time here and not only was Elsie super personable I could tell she has skill by the way she foil and highlighted my hair. Took a year break from doing bayalage/ sombre and definitely happy with the results! I've included a before and after photo to show the dimensions of the highlights. It wasn't toned to a darker brown at roots but I'm happy with the outcome! It's virtually impossible to have brown roots with bayalage highlights while having black roots. DK (The Wizard of Hair) Karvasales is brilliant. My wife's hair had started to look like "Cousin Itt." Yet Dave managed to tame "Hairzilla," and even make her happy! He made her hair look so silky, smooth and polished even she was amazed. Then he cut my hair, too. Now--I don't have much hair, so I'd gotten used to cutting it myself with one of those trimmer things--I know, it probably looked like I cut it myself, but hey, I'm a guy and I'm impatient and if I can stand on the deck and trim my own head that's easy, right. So I didn't really think I needed Dave's help, but boy was I wrong. He didn't just buzz me, he carefully trimmed away until my hair was perfectly even, smooth--and had a shine like stainless steel--it looks shockingly good. Dave also trimmed my ears (which have magical hair-growing properties) and my eyebrows so I was all neatly groomed. So--if you have a lot of hair--Dave can make it look like you just stepped out of a Pantene commercial. If you don't have a lot of hair, Dave can make you look like you're ready for a GQ photo shoot. Elsie rules! I moved to Marin about a year ago and kept fumbling my way through salons and stylists. I've got super thick, wavy hair and no one could quite figure out how to get the cut or color right (let alone both). I was getting discouraged when I happened upon James Rose Salon and Elsie Baroni has proven herself a miracle worker. Not only has she given me beautiful cuts (I've grown my hair out for the first time ever, because she somehow manages to keep it big and bouncy and not too heavy on top) and her color is *truly* top notch. Barbara Thigpen is the best. I started having her do my hair when she was working in San Francisco (where I live). I followed her to another salon in San Francisco. Then, she moved to a salon in San Anselmo and I said to myself, "I am not going to go all the way up there to get my hair done (I live in the southeast side of the city, so it takes me half an hour just to get to the GG bridge!) Well, I tried someone else at the old salon and I just wasn't happy, so I followed her to San Anselmo. And then, when she opened this salon in San Rafael, I followed her there. Every time she does my hair, I am happy with the results. I always enjoy seeing her and talking to her. She is very laid back and there is "no drama" around her (like I have found at other salons). She is a great person and a wonderful hair artist. I have been asked where I got my hair done and was proud to recommend Barbara. Went in to get a balayage but then came out getting highlights. You have to be very specific with what you are asking or else you won't get it. I paid $200+ and it not what i asked for. I showed pictures yet didn't get it. I got more yellow strips near the front of my face and almost no color at the back or bottom of my hair. It is more like two strips of blonde then no color at the back, one strip is brighter than the other and it looks like a mess. With further inspection, i noticed that the hair cut she gave me is very uneven. Hospitality is amazing but the service it self was not ok. would give it a 2/5 im sorry but If only I knew who i was hiring to do my hair i would've picked someone else or somewhere else. But ive never felt so ashamed to walk around with my two yellow strip of hair. read more

Jenny Sack is where it's at. I have a curly mane of hair that Jenny has beautifully shaped and colored for the past year. I began going to the James Rose Salon during the 2020 COVID19 pandemic. The owner of the James Rose Salon, Barbara, gave me a GREAT haircut. I had not had a hair cut for nine months and I was a shaggy mess. I have returned twice since my initial haircut and each cut is also great, and, if it's even possible, seems to be getting better as she gets to know me and my hair. Barbara was fabulous and sweet as pie. I came in with only a vague idea as to what I wanted and she pulled through like a champ. My hair feels great and looks great too! The salon was neat as a pin and the products they use smell wonderful. She took her time to make sure It looked right. I think I found my new place. Dave is the ONLY person who has ever given my son a good (GREAT) hair cut. Ry has very fine, blond hair and lots of cowlicks. One wrong move and there is a huge line across his head declaring " I just got a baaad hair cut!" Also, nobody has ever figured out the bang thing. Dave does it just right every time. We can go two months and the hair cut just looks better and better -- grows out beautifully. I always get a consistently excellent cut from David. His new salon has really nice decor, with tasteful colors and furnishings. With validated parking and a central location that is super convenient. This is a marvelous little studio.! My hairdresser of 20 years relocated and thank goodness referred me to Jenny Sack, who is wonderful, wonderful. She is a genius with color (and I have red hair which is always a challenge for hair stylists.) My color is gorgeous, does not fade between appointments, my cut is elegant and I do get stopped on the street with flattering remarks frequently.
