Perfect day trip--great way to explore Newport and Jamestown While winging it around Newport this past weekend, our thoughtful server at the White Horse Tavern recommended we check out the Jamestown Newport Ferry--and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. We arrived casually at the dock around 10 AM and hopped on without much planning. Our first stop was Fort Adams, where we enjoyed some surprisingly interesting historical sights. The timing was perfect--about an hour and ten minutes later, the next ferry arrived and took us to Rose Island Lighthouse. That visit was a standout. The guide was excellent, and we were fascinated to learn you can actually stay overnight at the lighthouse--definitely something we're planning to do in the future. (Fair warning: if you're not a fan of birds or geese, you might want to skip this stop.) Next, we cruised over to Jamestown, where the ferry crew recommended the Narraganset tavern and dinner at JB's on the Water. Enjoyed both. We were back in Newport by around 7 PM, totally relaxed, and without ever feeling rushed. Fine people, friendly staff, no stress--just a great way to experience the bay. I was way too late to the ferry game this year, and only recently rediscovered how much I love crossing the bay on the Jamestown Newport Ferry! I am currently in a musical in Jamestown, and always try to take the boat over when I can- it gets me in the right zen headspace to do my best at rehearsal, and what better way to soak up the last few warm days before we head into fall and winter? The ferry offers different ticket packages (I usually just go for the discounted "Evening Special" ticket, but there's a daylong "Hop On Hop Off" pass where you can travel from Jamestown to Fort Adams, to Downtown Newport, and even the Rose Island Lighthouse at leisure. If I had more free time, that would be a great way to see the area for sure. Prices are reasonable (20-40 USD per guest, depending on the ticket type), and it's a wonderful way to see the City by the Sea on the sea! The boats are rustic but comfortable, with padded benches and enough seating for 20-25 guests per vessel. The crew is friendly, and alcoholic and soft beverages are available for purchase on board. Definitely add this fun ferry crossing to your itinerary next time you are in Newport! read more

Got on the Jamestown Newport ferry last weekend for a tour of the bay. Got on in Jamestown and got off in Newport. The ride was fun and bumpy a bit, with some water splashing at some points of the trip but it was fun. The ferry has a small bar so you can get a drink if you wish. The people on the boat were friendly and very professional. For about $27 you can get on and do the hop on/off between the two cities. See one of the pics for alternate prices. The Jamestown Newport Ferry operates from May 21 through October 10 and has five Hop-On Hop-Off stops that include Jamestown, Rose Island Lighthouse, Fort Adams, Ann Street Pier and Perrotti Park. You are free to explore the shops, restaurants and attractions all day long of either town at your leisure. Options include round-trip or one-way tickets and a reduced-rate evening special, daily after 4 pm (special not available during festivals). The ferry sits about 48 people. The Jamestown Newport Ferry Cruises are the best way to celebrate summer! Last week we took the Wine tasting cruise and last night there was a sunset cruise with wonderful live music . The boat and staff are top notch , The Captain navigates the bay , Jamestown ,and Newport-giving you views you would never have the opportunity to see. I have taken all of the cruises out of Newport and this is by far the most relaxing and best one of all. The Coastal Queen was beautifully designed, shining inside and out and everyone at Conanicut Marine made you feel welcomed and special! A trip from the past The Jamestown Ferry is a small boat holding less than 50 people. That much smaller than traditional ferries but that's fine because it just shoots across Narragansett Bay to Newport, only a couple of miles. The ferry leaves right from the wharf in the center of Jamestown and makes also stops at Rose Island if anyone wants. It's pretty informal, the crew just asks anyone of they want to stop on the island and if you happen to be on Rose Island you hoist a "Don't Thread on Me" flag up a pole as a signal for the boat to stop. Pretty cool. After Rose the ferry proceeds to Fort Adams or Bowen's Wharf in the center of Newport. A short but very fun ride. It can get choppy in the bay but that makes it even more fun. The crew is just the captain and one deck hand but they both are very friendly and helpful. One Captain is from northern Ireland and he has an endless supply of jokes and stories about Ireland. Did you know that they give Guinness beer to pregnant woman in Ireland? It's presently about 16 bucks for a all day pass that allows you to ride as often as you like. Back and forth all day if you want. Of course no cars are carried on the ferry but bikes can be hoisted over the side. A great alternative to driving over the Newport Bridge, it gives you a different perspective on Narragansett Bay and lets you take in the great scenery while letting someone else do the driving. A interesting way to explore quaint Jamestown Village, the fantastic lighthouse on Rose Island, the craziness of Newport or the history of Fort Adams all in one day. read more

Visiting Newport for a week and staying in Jamestown, we picked out a day that would be good for us to take the ferry from Jamestown to Newport. We wanted to not only use the ferry as transportation, but as a fun experience. We stopped by on a Thursday morning. The temperature was mild and it was incredibly sunny. We noticed a large group of kids waiting to board. The thought of riding over on a small ferry with tens of screaming children filled us with dread, but we figured what the heck. We walked inside and purchased three roundtrip tickets. The clerk gladly sold them to us and then we stood outside near the class. We followed the class down the dock, waited for them to board, and then went to board ourselves. A woman asked us, "Are you with the school group?" We said no. She told us that the ferry wasn't sailing today. Only on the weekends. We informed her that we *just* bought tickets inside. She apologized and told us that this was a special charter for the kids and they weren't going to Newport at all. We went back inside and informed the sales clerk who sold us the tickets that the ferry was NOT running today. "Really?" he said. No, it wasn't. Where'd they get this genius? Does he even know his job? And why was there signage everywhere to buy tickets to a ferry that wasn't even sailing? FAIL. read more

On a beautiful summer's day, I ride this ferry because it's just such a beautiful ride. Each time I take the ferry, I learn a little more about Newport. When you arrive in Newport's harbor, you get to see some of the most magnificent seaworthy vessels up close. A few years ago, I was blown away by the beauty of the Edge's (U2) yacht. He was in town for the Folk Festival, and that private yacht was the most beautiful yacht I have ever seen. read more

I'm assuming this is the yelp page for the ferry that takes off from India Point in Prov to America's Cup Ave in Newport. I love that parking is free in India Point when you board the ferry. It's a small ferry but gets you where you need to go. It's kinda loud but not a big deal. You can sit inside the boat comfortably w/the upholstered seats, there's also tables/booth like seating inside the ferry. They have a top deck which I didn't ride on. This ferry is choppier than the Block Island ferry but I didn't get sick which is good. I love that it takes you right up to America's Cup Ave which has everything: quaint shops, Starbucks, ice cream shops, a toy store, a shoe store, cigar shop, & many places to eat/drink the day away. Def worth the trip up there & it's all walking distance. read more

One of my fav things to do in RI. The boats are always in impeccable shape and the captain/crew friendly & knowledgable about the area. Always on time & a pleasant journey. My out of town guests enjoy this as a highlight of their stay. It's a fun and easy way to travel to Newport and avoid traffic & parking issues. Additional boats for the festivals at Fort Adams so a good option for those. A great way to see the bay and Newport from the water. I always say one time I'm getting on the morning and just riding around the Bay all day w these guys! No need to even get off the boat. read more

Not only was the cruise interesting with gorgeous views, the crew was outstanding. My fiance and I got engaged the night before and they gave us each a free drink of our choice and congratulated us over the loudspeaker. When my phone died, the bartender unplugged her ipad (which takes orders) and let me charge my phone. Would love to do this again! read more

Be warned, they change ticket colors every day so if you buy round trip tickets and don't use them that day, you're out of the ticket price. Same with trying to buy ahead. They do not tell you this or put it on their signage. Fine once you're on the boat, but the ticket lady will bust your chops and let her friends cut the line. read more

Make sure you get a smiley face stamp on your hand once you pay and get onto the dock. The kid who was manning the station in Newport was more than happy to take our money but didn't bother to stamp us, which led to some confusion at our first stop, once we tried to return to the boat after stepping out for a restroom break. Other than that, it's a short little ride--you get to see the tall ships and some of the Newport mansions. It's nice to be on the water, and for $10 per person (cash only!), it's really not that bad. But it's no spectacular guided tour, either. Overall, I'm happy I did it, because I love being out on the water, but it's not something I'd be tripping over myself to recommend, either. read more

This was a great trip to take during our time in Newport. My fiancée and I just took a weekend trip and didn't have anything solid planned. The rest of the cruises (sunset, dinner, etc.) were closed for the season, but thank goodness the ferry was still running. We sat outside so it was a bit hard to hear the narration but if you sat upstairs or inside you can hear. They serve drinks and the boat was impeccably clean. We would definitely recommend this ride to anyone in town who just wants to relax and see the harbor. read more

I've used the Ferry two years in a row for the Newport Folk Festival. The staff is friendly and helpful. It's a great way to get to Newport.

Best deal for the money. For 20$ you can go all across from Jamestown to Newport with several stops where you can get off the ferry and spend an hour there. We found this gem during our last visit to Jamestown and took our friends on the ferry. It was beautiful. Cpt very friendly and staff friendly. We will go back there and take the ferry again! Stopped in Newport, walked to the cliff walk , saw mansions and for 2 bucks took the trolley bus back into town. read more

Great way to get around and beat the traffic. The boat was spacious and comfortable with friendly service. They serve cold beer and wine with a few mixed drinks to purchase which made for a very pleasant experience on board. Very easy access for wheelchair bound customers too. read more

The Jamestown Newport Ferry was awesome. Took it one afternoon to go visit Newport to skip the traffic. Really laid-back atmosphere, drinks on board, and dropped me off right in the heart of Newport. While there wasn't really a guided tour, the deckhand happily answered all of my questions about the sights we passed along the way. Lots of cool boats and things to see as passing. Overall, super charming little ferry, well worth it, especially as long as you avoid the very busy festival weekends where they're pretty packed. read more

We have used this ferry for several years-- it was an easy way to entertain guests or children taking them to Rose Island, Fort Adams and for a tour of the Harbor. This summer however the Captain seems to think he is operating a tour boat not a ferry--he has a sarcastic or caustic remark about the boats in Newport Harbor, new construction on the wharf--all broadcast using the ferry sound system. Sadly this new "tour boat" approach has ruined what use to be an enjoyable ferry ride through a lovely harbor. Never again-- read more

The Ferry was a nice ride, about 30 minutes pier to pier. It's definitely worth taking and saving the effort of trying to park in Newport. The crew and shore staff were pleasant, but the ferry was running a bit behind schedule the whole day. read more

Buying a ticket was fine but my family was being nice and we let everyone on before us. Little did we know that they could only hold 45 people and they oversold because they have no information on how many people they still have. Get a handle on that! We couldn't ride with our 80 year old grandmother on her birthday. This is unacceptable and needs to be changed. read more

These ferris are nice and convenient, however they can be unreliable. Today we were at Fort Adams waiting for the ferry back to Jamestown. We got there at 3:40 (for a 4:00 ferry) and the boat never came. It was the last one back in that direction. Because of this, we had to wait until 4:40 for a ferry in the opposite direction making our travel time back to our car twice as long. It is disappointing that the captains cannot stick to their schedule. I understand that boats may be late sometimes, but for ferries to either leave early or skip stops is unacceptable and unfair to those who are relying for transportation. read more
