Not sure why the reviews are so terrible. My RT to Martha's Vineyard was a breeze. It was not too crowded. The ferry had snacks and drinks (alcoholic included). Plus, we were on a brand new ferry so everything was very clean and like new. Grab a drink, sit out on the second or third deck and sit back and enjoy the ride. Only downside is that it's in the middle of nowhere so you have to arrange for a shuttle in advance or take an uber to the departure point (unless of course your drive). read more

We thoroughly enjoyed our time on the Rhode Island Fast Ferry for the Rhode Island Lighthouse and Newport Harbor Tour. This 90-minute excursion takes an in-depth dive on Rhode Island's rich nautical history, focusing in on our plethora of surviving 1800's-era lighthouses that are in striking distance of Conanicut Island. The presenter was very detailed in his presentation and injected humor whenever possible. It also helped that the weather was picture-perfect! This comprehensive cruise paired magnificently with the bevy of excellent beverages served on board. You could have the boat's signature cocktail, aptly named a Bay Breeze, or enjoy a beer from local brewery Whalers. After putting a few bad boys back, I had built up an appetite for what many may call the "Perfect Mariner Food". Fish tacos? No way. Hot dogs. I ventured into the cabin to the snack bar in search of my favorite tube-shaped delight, only to find bagels and candy in sight. A steamy, shiny glizzy perfectly cooked on rollers for 60+ minutes was what I needed right then and there and this is where the Rhode Island Fast Ferry fell flat on its face. A Ferry Hot Dog, or a "Ferry Dog" which is what I've come to call these slender pieces of perfection, would have hit the spot perfectly and most likely, would have brought my appreciation of historical lighthouses to new heights. The addition of a Ferry Dog to this visionary voyage would have made it a 7.3 star experience at a bare minimum. There's ample seating both inside the a/c, covered on the deck or uncovered if you want to be outside. They are very prompt on their times as well, which is appreciated. Stored our suitcase as we boarded, greeted everyone with a smile, and a welcoming chat. When visiting Providence, we decided to take a day trip to Martha's Vineyard. We drove down to Quonset Point and bought ferry tickets on a Wednesday. Glad we decided on this day because parking lot fees jumped to double the next day and then increased for the weekend. We were able to easily purchase two round trip same day ferry tickets in the little trailer. The cashiers were friendly and there is a restroom inside. A looooong line formed to board the ferry, but we were able to go right to the top for an amazing two-hour ride over to MV. The sun was shining, the wind was breezy, and it was a joyful excursion over. Note to self: reapply sunscreen throughout the trip! They serve snacks and cocktails on board....Rum Punch, anyone? The staff is friendly and helpful. On the ride back we had a very enjoyable discussion with a new employee, a recently retired man who charters his own boat. We also met another couple and got lots of restaurant recommendations for the remainder of our stay in RI. Very organized, safe, and fun time! read more

Despite the bad reviews, I thought this place was great. The ONLY bad thing I can say is that for the $100 round trip ticket you pay for, I really think there should be some kind of free snacks (snacks and beverages are not free). Other than that, I thought the Rhode Island Fast Ferry was great. It takes about 1hr&30 minutes to get to Martha's Vineyard and our ride was smooth and fast. We booked our tickets a day in advance and had no problem when we came the next day. The girls at the front counter are also great! Super friendly, helpful and very informative. There were two girls in particular (I wish I remembered names) but they were extremely informative. This being our first time in RI and off to Martha's Vineyard, we had a lot of questions and they didn't hesitate to let us know everything. I would for sure recommend this boat ride for anyone looking for a quick trip to Martha's Vineyard. read more

I took the ferry from Martha's Vineyard to Providence yesterday. If it hadn't been for Tony and the young woman behind the drink/food counter I would have missed my flight from the airport. The woman let me charge my phone behind the counter and noticed an alert from the airline. She was concerned that my schedule was tight and informed Tony who instructed me to call ahead for an Uber; he also made sure that I was first to get off the ferry. I made my flight with only 10 minutes to spare. I can't thank them enough. read more

Flying on the water A fast passenger ferry that leaves from Qunoset point in Rhode Island and goes to Oak Bluffs in the Vineyard. A large parking area is conveniently located right next to the terminal. It takes about 90 minutes and in my opinion the best way to get to Martha's Vineyard. The ferry is a cat powered by water jets and can hit up to 40 mph.. The trip is great fun. You get to go under the Jamestown bridge, get great views of the Beavertail Lighthouse on Jamestown and then great views of the Elizabeth Islands. This thing moves so it almost feels like you are flying. Then you end up in Oak Bluffs instead of Vineyard Haven, which to me is more convenient. The one problem is that the ferry isn't particular large so the ride can be a bit rough. I love this feeling but I have seen other passengers get sea sick and occasionally even seen some actually afraid. You have to realize you are on the ocean, and even though most of the time the ride is smooth, there are times when the weather can make things are bit difficult. So if you have a penchant for motion sickness it probably would be wise to take some medication before stepping on this or any other sea faring vessel. A catamaran is a safe and fun way to travel. We use this ferry at least a couple of times every summer and have yet to be disappointed. The crew are friendly and the trip and views great fun. The best part is that at the end you are on the Vineyard. read more

My husband and I took the 90 minute lighthouse tour today and really enjoyed the tour. We do not usually do this kind of thing as we do not like to be locked into a tour for a lengthy time. Especially my husband. He hates tours. But because I love lighthouses he agreed to go. Since it was on the water and in the sun he was happy. Harold the older gentleman who narrates was a charming man. Very knowledgeable about the area. We saw 10 lighthouses as promised. But 2 of them were a bit hard to see and get photos of. I think they should say 8 for sure with maybe a bonus if 2!!! Make sure you use the restroom in the boat while touring Newport harbor or you'll miss the last lighthouse and they close the restroom before returning to port. The restroom at the port check in (which is a trailer) is out of order. All in all it was worth taking and we did not have any issues. What a great way to get to Martha's Vineyard! Traveled from Connecticut and it was so much easier than driving all the way to New Bedford or Falmouth. Parking at the ferry is super easy and you are greeted by a pleasant attendant. The ride over to the Vineyard was great. The ride back was rather rocky and I was extremely sick. Thank you to Alec who took great care of me. He took me to an area of the ferry where it would be less bumpy and assured me everything was okay. He was calm and caring and communicated with my husband and son that all was ok. He came to check on me to see that all was well. Thank you Alec! All of the crew were so nice... read more

Ferry ride was quick to get to Martha's Vineyard , boat was very clean and nice .. it took 1 hr 45 mins to get there but the waters were very rough , waves were knocking people over , people vomiting on board . First mates walk around with vomit bags in their pockets . The captain did a great job maneuvering to find calmest way there . My family and I took the Lighthouse Cruise around Narragansett Bay and it was exceptional. The tour guide's audio was informative and pleasant, but not always easy to hear from all parts of the ship. That's okay though, because where you weren't able to hear the guide, you were standing in the wind, enjoying the Bay views, and appreciating a break from this dreadfully hot weather. I can't speak to the snacks or bar, but for a short tour it was a blast. It departs from Quonset, runs south along Jamestown and rounds Beavertail and then back up along Newport, making stops at lighthouses along the way. A great weekday outing that's a great change of pace and family friendly - kids were occupied for the 90-ish minute ride without getting bored, and older folks could have a seat and enjoy the guided tour and scenery. read more

Zero stars if possible! Don't let these people handle your bags or expect them to be honest! A ferry employee recently broke the handle on my wife's high quality suitcase because he wouldn't stop slamming the handle or let her put the handle down herself. The ferry employee denied breaking the suitcase handle when he was confronted about it, he said it must have already been broken but everyone knew that wasn't true. The suitcase was nearly new and functioned perfectly before the RI fast ferry personnel handled it. Ben from customer service refused to accept any responsibility for his employees actions and all but called my wife a liar for reporting the incedent. Obviosly baggage doesn't last forever, but handling it with care and being responsible/ aplogizing goes a long way. There are many other ways to get to the islands without putting yourself through this. Dishonest and insulting! read more

We had a great time! The boat was new. It slowed down at each lighthouse so we could take pictures. The LightHouse Tour was 1 hour 40 min and we got back in exactly that time. There was plenty of space aboard. The seating inside was comfortable and cool. The description was helpful but you can't hear it if you're outside by the front of the boat. The bathrooms were clean. I have no idea why others are complaining. We would recommend this company and this tour in particular. It was $46 total for myself and my daughter which I thought was a good price. read more

Similar to other posts, 1 star for the lack of flexibility in refunding tickets. It's a risky mode of transport to reply upon on any day- but due to their lack of customer service and consideration, it's even riskier. While I'd often recommended this route in the past to friends as traffic-proof, I've also thought it a bit too risky if I have work the following day because trips are cancelled when the winds are too high and you're basically left to figure a last minute (much more expensive) ferry/bus/train route back on your own. The risk factor has just taken a huge hike up with my most recent experience: I suggested the Amtrak-R.I. fast ferry route to friends coming up from NYC for this memorial weekend. Due to the big train crash in CT, Amtrak has suspended service north of NY. I just called the R.I. fast ferry office thinking that in this instance, since Amtrak is featured on their website as a way to access their service (one of the main navigation buttons on their Home page is "Amtrak" which shows daily train schedules to link a train to their departures!), there would be an exception to their no refund rule given the fact that Amtrak has unexpectedly cancelled its service. Highlights from my conversation with Ben, the Manager: -No, they are not able to refund tickets even in this instance -Your friends can bus to Providence and see if the same shuttle service that was picking them up from the Kingston station will pick them up from there. Do you want me to give you the number? -You could buy all of your friends' tickets if they're not able to use them in the future since you come up a lot -Other people have called about the same thing and said that they're renting cars to get here -We haven't stopped our service. We're not responsible for Amtrak. END The advantage of using a small company that operates a very limited schedule and leaves you very vulnerable to a relatively (relative to steamship authority/woods hole ferry) high risk of cancellation should be very friendly, personal/individualized considerate service, a warm sense of responsibility and understanding to those who patronize their small business (operationally, I don't imagine financially) ... especially since that group is likely to include the same patrons over and over again. I'm extremely disappointed in how lackadaisical Ben's approach was to accommodating customers who are not able to take a route suggested by the company on its website due to an unforeseeable, tragic event such as the train crash in Connecticut yesterday. I will never recommend this ferry again, and will avoid using it myself in the future. I should also include that Ben suggested I call him if I'd like anymore help in routing the way to Quonset by car or bus. read more

This company is a fraud. They have one ferry and if it breaks down you are SOL!!!!! It happened to us and just got off the phone with the manager who had no empathy for the major inconvenience it caused our family of 5 plus a dog! They canceled our ferry back from MV & solution was to put us on steamship authority ferry then on a freakin bus off the cape for 2 hours. Horrible experience. I would NEVER use this service again. Be ware they will not reimburse you or consider any of your situations even if you miss a flight because of their negligence. Complete disrespect. In addition - the parking is cash only so if you get there & don't have cash u need to drive 10 minutes to an ATM. Also note that there is no restroom or place to sit at ferry terminal. I have been going to MV for 20 years, as my family has a vacation house on the island. I have tried every single ferry service that goes to the island, and this one, while the most conveniently located, is by far the worst. 1.) You cannot change your tickets - ever. If you miss your ferry, you must use it on a standby basis in the future... They will NOT book you on another scheduled trip. . They claim it is a limitation of their reservation system, but who would actually create a reservation system that does not allow changes to reservations... New Bedford Fast Ferry (Seastreak) will allow you to change your tickets at anytime and is a far better option. They are also not much farther north. 2.) The ride is awful. Due route they must take, the ride can be extremely rough, it is not uncommon to have many people throwing up on the boat, often on the floor. I have seen chain reactions of 20 people... 3.) The people who take your reservations are almost always overwhelmed and ask you to call back to make a reservation. Mistakes to your bookings are common - and even in these situations stand by their no refund or change policy. I would 100% recommend the New Bedford Fast Ferry or Steamship Authority. Both understand the power of customer satisfaction. THIS IS NOT CONVENIENT FROM BOSTON. read more

This is the last time we will use the fast ferry service out of Quonset Point. We have used the ferry out of New Bedford for years with great, dependable service and were looking for a closer drive from New York. Fuggedaboutit, we will spend forty five more mins in the car to avoid this mess. Two things happened. First, while waiting on line, I fainted at the ticket desk. I came to right away and explained that I had not eaten or slept. The EMT had already been called and the harbor master said that if they cleared me I could get on the ferry. They cleared me but I was not allowed to board anyway. Our tickets had been given to stand-by customers. The harbor master was not kind, and lied about having given away our tickets in order to fill the ferry (we saw him do it), and we had to wait five hours for the next ferry. Then, on our return trip, we got off the ferry and were informed that our bicycles had been left on Martha's Vineyard. We would have to wait until 9pm (we had taken the 3:15 ferry so we would be able to drive home in daylight). The harbor master did not seem to care much about how this affected us- he was all business. We decided to spend the night in a nearby hotel and pick the bikes up in the morning. By way of restitution, he gave us a refund on one of our ferry tickets. We still paid for the bikes. We are fortunate that we could stick around to pick up our bikes. If we had to drive further and/or had to be at work the next day, we would have been screwed. I asked them to ship the bikes to New York and was told, "That's not going to happen". Overall, we felt their reliability and customer service were poor. Sympathy and remorse on the part of a business when they mess up are expected if you believe the customer is the most important thing. Apparently this crew does not believe so. We made our first trip to Martha's Vineyard this past weekend. We decided to use this ferry to avoid the traffic up to Cape Cod. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't great and the waves were really rough once we got out of Narragansett Bay into open water--it was like being on a roller coaster, but in the middle of the ocean. I don't have a history of getting seasick, but I was in bad shape for a while (who knows what would have happened if I didn't have an empty stomach). My husband had to double up on the dramamine. We heard reports of people vomiting in the back of the boat by the luggage racks. We were actually dreading the ride back, but the seas were so rough the day of our return that the ferry had to cancel its trip. The company contacted us well ahead of time (with two calls to my cell, a text message and a call to my home phone) to say that our tickets would be honored by the Steamship Authority (which had a ferry leaving the island at the same time) and that a bus would be waiting for us in Wood's Hole to take us back to Rhode Island. We got back to the parking lot in Rhode Island an hour later than if our original ferry had been in service, but the boat ride was much smoother (based on the sheer size of the SA's ship and the route it takes) and our stomachs were grateful. The bus driver was swerving all over the road, but that's another story. Overall, I'd say that the Vineyard Fast Ferry isn't bad, just hope that you're traveling on a day when the waters are calm. If we go to Martha's Vineyard again, we'll probably play it safe and drive up to Wood's Hole though. Friends who were with us said the same thing. read more

Super easy in and out, smooth ride! If you have ever taken the Falmouth ferry, you're in for a treat. First off, the drive to the ferry is a breeze. I live south of Boston, (Norwood), and you simply drive south on 95, to route 4. Then drive about 6 minutes to the end of the highway, which is where the ferry is! Insanely easy, no traffic. Ten bucks cash per day to park. Lot is well lit if you are there at night. We bought tickets in advance and picked them up at the office at the landing. The boat is fast, quiet, has TV, nice seats. Very smooth ride. We brought our dog and the staff were kind enough to bring him a bowl of water. Everyone who worked there was great. They sell coffee and snacks. Coffee is gross.... ;-( Although it is more expensive than the Falmouth boat, we easily saved a hour worth of driving, not to mention the bus ride that you have to account for when you are in Falmouth, so probably saved another hour there. What a savings in terms of my time and the hassle factor. Nuff' said, I will always be taking this ferry from now on. Excellent experience all around. read more

DO NOT BUY TICKETS IN ADVANCE! I don't even want to give this place 1 star. We were celebrating a family members birthday... We ordered the tickets in advance to get the discount. We got an email the day before our tour telling us that the due to the RI air show we should plan on getting there an hour earlier due to traffic. I normally live 30 mins away. Tour was at 1pm I left at 10:30am. Due to the traffic we didn't get there until about 1:40p and the boat had left. We sat in the car for 3 hours... We listened to there advice and left early. They REFUSED to give us our money back. They told us we could use the tickets another day. I've lived in RI all of my life... 29 years... I never even considered going on a tour before and after spending three hours of my only weekend day off in a car FOR NO REASON... I was extremely upset. Not customer friendly at all. If you want a nice day trip for a few people visiting, this is the way to go. The ride though Narragansett Bay and around Beavertail Point is very scenic. Once you hit the ocean however, the ride got a bit bumpy and I was turning a little green...but alas, you get to Cuttyhunk and the onshore flow gets blocked and you can enjoy the rest of the trip. The coffee on board is delish and the folks working are very nice. It TOTALLY beat driving to New Bedford and was a very reasonable price at about $70 round trip. Quonset is very easy to find. 90 minutes is the ride. BETTER than the tour of the island if you go on a lovely sunny day!! read more

I only gave it 1 star because I couldn't move forward to write this review otherwise. I purchased 2 roundtrip tickets for the fast ferry to Oak Bluffs. I did wonder why we were given our return trip tickets at that time and advised not to lose. I didnt worry, I guarded the return tickets, but somehow managed to lose one before boarding. I showed them my email receipt and my itinerary and my actual receipt. I still had to purchase another ticket for much more than my original ticket. And, as I began paying, not one but 2 staffers insisted on explaining why....something about someone else could have found the ticket. At the cost of the tickets, I would think they would either move into the 21st century with ticketing, but hey wait...their system is set up for this to happen, fast ferry 1 and me 0. read more

I am appalled by the customer service received after a recent ride on the "Martha's Vineyard Fast Ferry" from North Kingstown, RI to Oak Bluffs, MA. Upon getting on the ferry my bag was taken from me by an attendant "Ken". The handle of my suitcase was having trouble going down as something inside must have been lodged in the way. Instead of asking for my assistance, he proceed to jam down the handle hard numerous times until eventually just giving up and putting it with the handle sticking out on the shelf. Annoyed, but having had a long day I let it go and sat down for the ferry ride. As we approached Oak Bluffs, I went to find my bag which he had taken off the shelf and was in a row with other bags. My handle was now broken with only 1 of the 2 metal arms which go to the handle still connected. This being a nice, Tumi piece of luggage, I was very annoyed and said something to him about it. He immediately brushed me off and told me that it was "already broken" to which a man behind me said, "no I saw you get on the ferry and it wasn't broken earlier". When I called to speak to a manager, "Ben" he told me basically that Ken told me it was broken already so I must be lying to him about it and there was nothing they were going to do about it. Wow!!!!!!! Apparently, they don't go by the "customer is always right" motto and did absolutely nothing to rectify the situation. No offer to fix it, no offer to discount or cover the cost of my ferry ticket, not even a real apology. I would not recommend this business to anyone looking to travel to or from Martha's Vineyard!! read more

I called on Thursday to get my brother (visiting from California) tickets on the Sunday ferry to RI from the Vineyard. "Sophie" said it was booked and there was a waiting list. She put my name on it and told me I'd better book another day to secure a spot because it would be unlikely a spot would open up. I spent close to $200 on Sat evening tickets. Sophie called me the next am to say they had an opening for 4 people on Sunday, but we would have to spend another $200 on those as the others were non-transeferable. RIDUCULOUS!!! She is the one who told me to hurry up and get the previous ones. Worst business practice ever and she didn't not feel one ounce of regret for my dissatisfaction. read more

Weather and traffic was going to make it very close for me to get to the ferry on time. I called from 30 minutes out and they said if I got there in time, they would park the car for me in order to help me get on the boat in time. Very helpful staff -- on shore and aboard. Beats driving in Cape traffic. Definitely the way to go if you don't need your car on the island. Bikes are allowed on board. Great views of the shorelines. read more
