My husband and I did a private surf lesson at turtle bay in Oahu and had the best time! My husband is legally blind and when we found out there was adaptive surfing on the island we were excited to try it out. Our instructors were Chris, Jack and Kai'nehe and all three were very attentive, knowledgeable, and nice. They made sure we had fun while ensuring our safety. aloha from Kauai... took my girls to Turtle bay 3 day staycation. haven't been there since it was the Kuilima decades ago! we'd surf off the ledge as teenagers, always a crazy place and occassionally decent (mostly Tradewind slop...) daughter was stoked to grab a board from Jamie's space, fun crew of random instructors all smiley and welcoming. Bought couple of surf sessions for my child during resent trip to Waikiki and he loved the experience. The only word of caution is about the "media" package... Bought photo and video package and the photos from in front of store were good, the videos were not worth the $80. 1080P and shot from the beach with my son several hundred years offshore. My iPhone did better job as I stood right next to the photographer. In other reviews and other photos from website gave me impression that some video would be done from out in water, but that was not the case at all. Oddly enough I was at beach on another day and saw same photographer out in the ocean on boogie board shooting film so not sure what 'option' they paid for to get that level of photography. Suggest surf lessons, but skip the media package and just film with your phone or use your own gopro. read more

We had a great experience with a private lesson for my 10 year old son. Navarra was a great instructor. We also met Seven on the ride back to the shop, and he is great too. On days when the waves are rough, they take students in golf carts out to a beach with calmer waters and great waves for beginners. There is a $60 photo add on where they send you lots of digital photos, which I definitely recommend! read more

My son and I rented boards and didn't take the lesson but the staff from the check in girl to the instructor in the water were so nice and helpful. All instructors were super knowledgeable and knew how to the waves would break and where to be in the lineup. And a bonus to surf with Jaime! We will be back at Turtle Bat Resort and this is a MUST! Bunch of "cool" kids giving the lessons and even with a private lesson you go out in a group. So much for private. Also the kids giving the lessons can't help but to tell you how cool they are and how the surf schools in Waikiki are a joke...isn't there a O'Brien school there now though lmfao. Supposedly some of the kids have legit credentials, so they'll let you know. Felt like I was talking to posers at a club in Hollywood, but with pidgin accents. You're far better off rolling the dice with some small mom & pop with high ratings if you want to learn, avoid this place the McDonald's of surf schools. read more

Seriously amazing experience! We took our 8-year-old for a surf lesson during our stay at Turtle Bay. Our kid can be a bit anxious and the surf on the north shore was massive thanks to some gusty winds, but the instructor could not have been more expert or chill. He was great at putting our son at ease; to quote my son his surf teacher "understood him" and got his vibe which made it a smashing success. The instructors can adapt to whatever skill / comfort level you've got. We took a golf cart to a bay nearby that was FULL of sea turtles and waves small and well shaped enough to provide my kid with a Hawaiian roller coaster experience. He chose to share a board with his teacher rather than go solo, and the teacher reassured him that it was okay, since "that's how we all learned." We had a great viewing perch amid some banyan trees and volcanic rocks. Our son was all smiles the whole time, and didn't even get scared when he rolled off the board for two rides. ( The bay is shallow and he could actually thought the rocky bottom. ) He's asked to go again before we leave and this time he want to graduate to piloting his own board. One last tip, definitely go for the photos. The price seemed steep until we saw the quality. The photographer was amazing and we have preserved this memory for a lifetime. So grateful for the kindness and professionalism and the whole staff at JOBSE. You are beautiful. read more

The instructors here make all the difference. Jake, Ikaika, and Shiloh were kind, informative, and easy going. We could tell that they love the islands. They took us out for an SUP lesson and turtle hunt on beautiful Kawela Bay. We spotted a few turtles and paddled around the bay, enjoying the view. Jake towed my daughter (8 y.o.) on her own board. She loved it. They took us to and from the bay by golf cart and gave us a nice little tour as we went. I would definitely do it all again. It would be great for groups or families as well. 3 stars is based on my single group lesson where we went to a nearby beach instead of turtle bay. My only criticism is that I asked waves expected during the lesson and 3/4 ft range was what I was told (that being said waves are unpredictable). My issue was that I was given a 12ft board and the waves were maybe 1-2ft and only formed in one spot and wouldn't even lift me ( I can paddle and pop up on larger waves). Staff were super knowledgeable, they were very respectful and genuinely care about their customers. My instructor even offered a board rental for free when I got back but I only had so much daylight left on the north shore day trip. I think going for a solo lesson would have been worth the tailored wave selection. Group lessons are just a different pace. For absolute beginners that don't weigh more than 150lb roughly this backup beach would have worked. Resort area is wonderful; they have outdoor showers and their rash guards and reef shoes are very comfortable. Staff even helped newer people paddle in/ out which is very generous. read more

I had the experience of a lifetime. I am a 61 year old who went surfing for the first time ever, though I have had some experience swimming in the ocean. If I hadn't taken a private lesson, I never would have been able to catch a wave and stand up on the board. It was expensive, but completely worth it. If it's your first time, I would strongly recommend looking at youtube videos beforehand and practicing pop ups before you go. That made a huge difference for me.
