Polenta chips with rosemary Caesar salad with grilled chicken and chicory Chargrilled burger with fontina cheese and pickles in a fennel-seed bun Gennaros' amalfi orange tart with candied fruit Just remembering these dishes is making my mouth water. They might not be authentic Italian dishes you'd expect from a trattoria but who cares when the food is this good? I've been to Jamie's a handful of times now and every dish I've tasted has been fresh and flavoursome. I've also tried the wine, champagne and cocktails and they were all fantastic too. I would give Jamie's Italian five stars if it wasn't for two things that bug me. 1) You can't book and the place is so popular you always have to wait 15-45 minutes. This wouldn't be so annoying if they let you reserve a table and come back later but you have to wait in the packed bar and order a drink - which makes the whole experience more costly and can be annoying when it's jam-packed. 2) The downstairs layout and atmosphere is much better than upstairs. The design is cooler and it feels warmer and cosier. The staff also seem more efficient. We were seated upstairs once and everything seemed to go wrong. I'd go back tomorrow. This is an Italian restaurant done very well. I actually went here on a first date and it was the perfect venue. We were sat in a booth so a little bit of privacy but we were still able to enjoy the great atmosphere. Our waitress was awesome & very funny - we had lots of fun with her. And the food was delicious! We shared pork scratchings and apple sauce to start and I had the prawn tagliatelle which was delicious but a little too much pasta for me. We shared the brownie with salted caramel ice cream which I could've eaten all over again. A great venue with great food - I'll definitely come back. read more

Jamie Oliver, renowned chef, has recently had a bit of a Brighton takeover. With a new shop on Western Road and a new restaurant, Jamie's Italian, I thought it high time to give this new kid on the block a try-out. Although it didn't disappoint, Jamie's Italian finds itself sitting on the fence: is it high dining, or just great food? The quality of the food is truly excellent. My fish was cooked to perfection, nearly falling apart on my fork; soft, buttery and divine. My fiancee's truffle pasta was also excellent, as were our friends' Spaghetti Bolognaise and pork belly. Although a little pricey, the quality is exceptional. The restaurant itself is a little strange. The chairs are plastic, but the tables are treated wood. On the wall is a modern design, but the bar has a solid marble top, and the display cabinet behind has 60's stained glass... A design nightmare. And why is there a live feed of the kitchen on the way upstairs? Just bizarre. So, is it noble cuisine, or just 'pucka'? Unfortunately, it isn't quite either. The food is cooked to perfection, but is actually quite simplistic. Offering Spaghetti Bolognaise for over a tenner? Next to truffle pasta? On offer is a bizarre mixture of high and low food culture, and it won't appeal to everyone. The cooking is excellent, but would you really pay posh-restaurant prices for such simple dishes? This, combined with the strange design and decor, makes Jamie's Italian a confusing, yet tasty experience. read more

Had dinner here this evening... This is a Jamie Oliver Italian Restaurant in Brighton. Atmosphere is good, no beer on tap though... Had great plank platter which included cured sliced meat such as salami and pepperoni, cheeses (buffalo mozzarella, Parmesan, and Romano) along with a variety of breads as an appetizer. The Rocket and cabbage salad was great and for the main course I got the eggplant which was very delicious. (Not called eggplant on the menu but that's what it was!) Who says England has bad food!? Oh wait, this is Italian. Whatevs- Jamie's is some good eats. My brother and his wife live in Brighton and this is one of their favorite spots. We started off with a vegetable antipasti plank (plenty for the four of us). The plank included marinated and pickled vegetables, delicious olives, cheese, and bread (crostini if I remember correctly). For an entree I ordered the mushroom ravioli which was very tasty. I appreciated the smaller entree option as this allows one to enjoy an appetizer or dessert without getting too full. For dessert we had the ice cream and an espresso martini. Hey, I was on vacation. Our server was great, was attentive and had a friendly sense of humor. The interior of this restaurant is open and cool, although.... that leg of pig hanging from the counter near my table did kind of freak me out a bit. I've only been here once (last night), so haven't experienced more than one meal here, however that one meal was so scrummy that I just couldn't resist writing a review... Being a chain, Jamies could easily offer a relatively generic experience, however as soon as I walked in I was immediately impressed by the high standard of things. The decor is fantastic- very cool and eye-catching and the staff greeted us with big smiles, which is always nice! The food, too, was really wonderful! I had a steak and chips- something that is easily done averagely, but it was delicious. The steak was thin and lathered in oil and fresh herbs, making it taste incredible and feel much less stodgy than other steaks I've had. It felt fresh and light! The chips, too, were well flavoured with garlic and herbs. The overall atmosphere was great- there was a nice buzz about the place- and my experience there was lovely on the whole. I was very pleasantly surprised by Jamie's and will most definitely return to try more of the food! :) Don't be put off by the fact that this is a chain restaurant- give it a shot and I'm confident you'll be happy you did! read more

Another great Jamie's Italian, with great food, cheerful service and an awesome vibe. Just me with my toddler this time, and the "Fish in a Bag" and the kids pasta with tomato sauce and side salad were fabulous as usual. Also splurged on strawberry ice-cream and mango sorbet, fresh, fruity, flavoursome, yummo! It might be a little more expensive but we don't get to come often, the food and the service are worth the price. Big tip, hit this place early (think 5.30/6ish) to beat the rush... read more

I really like Jamie Oliver (or at least what I have seen on tv of him over the years). We ended up in Brighton for just the afternoon before flying home from Gatwick and stopped in for a meal. Didn't love it at all. We had the Italian steak and it was dry with cold fries. Spicy Calabrian sausage pappardeli and it was spicy but not awesome. In all it wasn't what I was expecting and maybe my standards were set too high from all the exposure. The wait staff were casual and pleasant and efficient so at least there's that. read more

Went here with the family to have lunch and got a nice table next to the kitchen. We had 2 bottles of house prosecco (not bad) and appetizers to share (Salumi plate, mozzarella, fried mushrooms, fried ravioli and polenta) and for mains we had the pork loin, grilled meats, spaghetti bolognese and carbonara (everything was good and the portions were huge). For dessert we had the polenta cake and sorbet - all yummy. The place was packed with people and seemed to be very popular - give them a visit if you are in Brighton. read more

My expectations were high when I decided to let Jamie spoil me for a change in his new Italian restaurant just off the South Lanes. All food in this popular, exquisitely decorated spot is prepared after Jamie's original takes on traditional Italian recepies. Also, as it quickly became apparent, all the staff has been thouroughly drilled to display the kind of enthusiams and knowledge about the menu that one would associate with the owner. I went for a special starter consisting of tortellini, mussels and goats cheese. Oh no, that's not just any tortellini, mussels and cheese, the waiter pointed out. That's herby hand made egg tortellini with carefully selected sea mussels served in Italian mature goats cheese. In a similar vein my main course consisted of tender, wild Scottish lamp steaks with Jamie's special mint sauce served with a side order of truffle chips. The first and main thing I quickly concluded looking at my plate and the plates of others around me is that the portions really are quite small, by anyone's standard. The main course came completely bare without any extras and the tortellini starter, and "posh" fries fitted into a desert cup. But could I "taste the difference"? The answer is, that while I think the quality of the food is ok, the dishes do not deserve any rating beyond average, especially in view of the price of around £12 for a main course without any compliment. Hence I left Jamie's Italian feeling hungry and slightly robbed, sensing I had been tricked by clever advertising and imagery. No, I have not lost faith in Jamie's abilities as a food innovator and campaigner but I am even more cautious of the money making side that goes with it. read more

Jamie, oh Jamie. Why couldn't I just stay in the parallel universe where Mr. Oliver does what he does because he loves food and eating and people and not money and capitalism? Because I went to one of his restaurants. The oodles and oggles of Jamie merchandise should have tipped me off, but still, I persisted - this is Jamie - he just wants us to eat well! I ate oK. Just ok. Everything was too small for the price and being an American-Italian third generation, I'm pretty sure I know what good Italian is. Back to the price thing. It really wouldn't have bothered me so incredibly much if it hadn't been for the fact that at the bottom of the menu Jamie gives a little personalized blurb touting that good food and good people and good times can be for everyone aka this place won't be like other snobby Italian eateries that overcharge and underserve portion-wise. You know what, this is a chain restaurant. It is. It's all I could think about when I ate here back in May and it's really all I can think about now as I write this review. It's a chain, it's good, it was fresh, I had no complains nor would I wax poetic on the virtues of Jamie's Italian. I got a pretty solid carbonara and my mother got some pretty solid cannelloni. I spent a week in Brighton with several coworkers, and Jamie's Italian was high on our list to try. The menu has a good selection for all types, from vegan to low carb. Came in over the bank holiday weekend and unfortunately I think it was the worst time to go. When we came in we were told half the menu was out of stock due to the weekend. When we got the food wasn't the best quality I wasn't expecting allot from this restaurant but was a clear microwave job . The restaurant layout was great really modern. First off, the most important thing - the food. The food is incredibly tasty. It's a little more expensive than other Italian places, but I think the the quality justifies the price. Fresh pasta, gorgeous seasoning, beautiful desserts. My friend and I barely spoke as we ate our brownies, they're that good. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because the atmosphere can be a bit hit or miss. The first time I came here, we were shoved upstairs with a large, noisy, hen party, and I don't think upstairs is as nice as downstairs, where you can see the food being prepare and the atmosphere is a bit more relaxed. A Jamie Oliver establishment isn't exactly the height if independence, but you've got to give the man credit for what he's done with this Italian joint. In an already bursting marketplace of restaurants it has been a roaring success. The whole operation is highly efficient, turning over covers like its no big thing, and orders never take more than 15 minutes to arrive. The high-tech kitchen is a chef's wetdream, with all the gadgets and kit to make the line hum like a like a well-greased machine. The food is pretty damn good too, leaning on Oliver's passion for Itlain cookery with a menu of simple, well-done rustic dishes. The pasta station is unsurprisingly most popular, freshly made out front each day. Anti-pasti is also on display, with all sorts of spicy cured slices and marinated morsels. Even the sides show imagination - the poplenta chips, deep-fired and coated in rosemary salt or great, and the tuna salad, seared rare an a micro-salad of rocket and cress is vitally fresh. There's even some Olverisms - the funky chips a served with micro-sliced garlic and parsely. You may feel a bit like a number, and prepare to queue for a table at lunch, but the whole place is just works, and for the quality ono offer, is good value too. read more

I had a very pleasant meal there recently. The Antipasti platter was especially nice. Someone on our table remarked that the mortadella was like 'Teddy Bear' ham, but it wasn't as sweaty as it sounded. The olives and caper berries were a particular favorite of mine, as was the mozzarella. It was all served up on a wooden plank. For added bohemian theatre, 2 giant tins of Italian plum tomatoes were used to prop up the slab. This added to some form of elevation to our meal, yet given that every table that had the platter had the same treatment it somehow diluted the kookiness somewhat. For my main I had the burger. Yes, you did read correctly, I had a burger in a rustic Italian restaurant. It wasn't half bad, beef cooked nicely, had a melty quality about it, and was stacked so high I felt I needed to turn into a python and dislocate my jaw in order to deep throat this juicy beast. It was also served on what looked like a chopping board. With all these chunks of wood used for plates I really hope they were from sustainable rustic rainforests. But then again this was a Jamie restaurant so I suppose he can do what he likes. In terms of price it was pretty reasonable, my only gripe was the glass wear on the tables. My glass looked like it was covered in crack cocaine and my friend's glass had a lipstick mark on it. That wasn't very impressive and not ideal when one is about to write a review either. The coffee there wasn't overly amazing and my taste buds didn't find themselves wanting to declare it was 'The Best Latte' or any other Jamie-isms either. But for a Sunday afternoon on a cold afternoon with a lovely bunch of people it wasn't half bad. I will praise the wine list though, it had a good array of wines and in terms of Champagne, it served Billecart Salmon at a very reasonable price which I was rather impressed with. It is worth a visit, but do be prepared that you are entering Jamie Land. read more

Average. Brighton has a lot of tasty, value for money Italian places but this isn't one. It was simply not worth what they charge. There were moments of real tastiness but I felt the portions were too small, the lamb chops (whilst good) were served utterly unaccompanied (at 14.35 - that's not right) & the arancini starter was simply boring. On the positive side, the crispy squid starter was great & my mushroom panzerotti (stuffed pasta) was really mushroomy but would I go again? I very rarely go to anything resembling a chain. And I'm wary of Jamie's HUGE branding operation. He's practically steamrollering the whole country with his image and presence. So naturally, liking small, independent, boutiquey type places, I'd think twice before trying this leviathan. However, if you can get pass the ridiculous queue outside due to the no booking policy (we waited 40 minutes in nice weather, but I've heard reports of over two hours), the atmosphere and style inside is nothing short of fantastic. It's immediately obvious that, recession or not, serious amounts of money have been pumped into this venture. It's very stylish, mixing an Italian feel (hams and classic Italian food products visible on the walls) with a modern design interior combining expensive wood panelling, dark ceramic tiles and funky lighting, and a very sexy bar in the entrance. There is also a wood-fired oven in a half-open kitchen/deli counter downstairs, and tables for at least 100 covers, and more upstairs. It's a bit like Bill's (I wonder how many ideas they took from there) but with 10 times the investment. I can barely fault the food: superb antipasti with freshly roasted peppers and artichokes and pretty good (though not sensational) cold cuts, excellent pasta (the truffle tagliatelle particularly sexy and lipsmacking) and not a bad little wine list. It's hugely popular and for good reason: great atmposhere, fresh and simple food, very trendy, and competitively priced. One downside: the booking policy. It would help if at very busy times booking was a possibility for even some tables. Otherwise, highly recommendable. read more

Went there for lunch yesterday and felt mixed emotions. The restaurant itself was very nicely done up - beautiful chandelier, Thomas Crapper branded toilets etc etc. I felt the wall of trainers was a step too far though - I thought Jamie had more sense than to think he could get away with that one. We were told we'd have to wait 45 mins for a table and given a buzzer (why they couldn't just take our number I don't know). Restricted by a range of 30 metres, we opted for a drink at the Black Lion next door whilst we waited. Our table became available much sooner than expected but it meant I had to leave a near-full glass of wine (well in truth I downed it but let's pretend I'm a classy customer). The food was very tasty though maybe not worth the money given the informal feel they were going for in the place. I'm always a little unimpressed by places that sell meat dishes that don't comprise a whole meal. I don't want to have to order a side dish of chips or veg separately, I want it thought out for me and priced in one lump sum! I ordered a coke which came out in the form of a teeny weeny glass bottle which hadn't been chilled. When I asked the waitress if I could have one from the fridge, she indicated the glass full of ice in front of me. If I'd wanted watered down coke I'd have asked for it. So actually on reflection I'm going to remove a star (I was going to give it 3). If everything else matched up to the quality of the food, it would definitely get more from me. read more

Well, put it that way it didn't wow me, more than that I was actually disappointed To start with i noticed couple dirty glasses on the table and my serviette looked as it was dragged on the floor and then put on the table. Despite incredible number of staff, who where running around like headless chickens creating a bit manic atmosphere in half full restaurant, the service was very slow and food didn't look no where near like Jamie's cooking on the telly. Oh dear oh dear. Is this what eating out has come to? First there is the pretension of not taking bookings, then you are squeezed into a cramped table bashing elbows with your neighbours. Next, you realise that everything about this place is self-consciously trendy - the achingly-cool interior design, the yuppie-friendly Coldplay on the radio, the hip meat counter and Jamie's smug grin on the back of the menus. The insidiousness of the calculated "coolness" was overbearing. This impersonality and contrition would be excusable if the food and service were any good. We waited an age to have our order taken and then the fancy, hi-tech ordering PDAs crapped out. Also, several of our choices weren't available. We ordered pork belly and cannelloni. Instead of being melt-in-the-mouth and moist, the pork belly was incredibly overcooked. So much so that the waitresses remarked on it and promised to bring some gravy to make it palatable. This didn't arrive until we'd finished. The pasta was bland and unimaginative - something I could have knocked up at home in 10 minutes. Even more disappointing than the pork, in fact. The wines were even worse. Screw cap bottles and box wines for £15+. Eurgh. And at every stage you were upsold some crappy bread from one of Jamie's mates or one of his books. Oh and there were only two toilet cubicles for a cavernous restaurant that must have sat well over 100. There was a constant queue outside. I was shocked when the bill for two came out to £50. I would pay £10 a head for better food than this at any gastropub. Overall, very disappointed. read more

Blummin love this place - you can't beat a bit of Jamie's. The consistent quality of the cooking means you're guaranteed a lovely dinner with incredible tastes and the heartwarming sensation of being full up when you've finished! It's a chain, so the food is generally the same standard you'd expect from a Jamie's. Lovely atmosphere, there isn't much natural light so it's quite cosy and atmospheric. The decor is interesting, there's always something to look at, and you can see the chefs working hard in the kitchen. The waiting staff are patient and friendly and really promote the brand, and you don't wait too long for your food. The prices are actually reasonable for what you get, and whilst I wouldn't go here too often, it's a lovely treat when family are in town or a date night. The only downside is the price of drinks here which really is a bit steep, and they generally make you wait half an hour for your table so you'll spend money at the bar. read more

Worst burger ever. Yes I know its an Italian but I really fancied a burger. Unfortunately what I got was a piece of charcoal dressed nicely in a bun. Honestly, it was so burnt- unfortunately it was a busy Saturday night and we had already waited ages for our food and drinks and turned out dessert too so I did not want to order and wait for anything else. The 'funky chips' were however very nice. It's such a shame as I've heard good things about this restaurant but the burnt food and slow service has really put me off going to the Brighton venue again- maybe I'll have to try one in another area! read more

Really tasty food but at a price! I've been to Jamie's a number of times and never had a bad experience! The menu changes with seasons and so there is always something new to try. It is one of the only restaurants where I would order a pasta dish as you can really tell the difference! It caters for many different tastes. My personal favourite dish is the South Coast Fritto Misto. Also, the chocolate brownie is incredible! Staff are always friendly and have a smile on their face. I particularly like that you can see the preparation take place. Great cocktail menu as well. Would be 5 stars if a little bit cheaper! read more

I've been to Jamie's Italian a couple of times now; my boyfriend likes it because it serves good food and wine in an unpretentious setting. The menu is as you would expect - a modern British take on Italian cuisine. You can have spag bol (a dish which Italian chefs that I have worked with have always derisively dismissed as a British invention, a kind of Mediterranean chicken tikka), with a side of chips if you like, but there are also some very good quality and rather more traditional Italian dishes available. Last time I went, I had the aromatic truffle tagliatelle as a starter, which is fantastic. My boyfriend had the truffle salami 'artisan board', which was very good quality salami, but pretty expensive for the size. My main was not quite as fabulous as the starter, a 'flash steak' served with a tomato salsa and rocket leaves, and my boyfriend had rose veal - again, pleasant, but nothing to write home about. We had a carafe of the house red, an organic Sangiovese which slipped down very easily. For dessert I had the ice cream; you are offered a choice of flavours and toppings, and I was very pleased with my decision when my honeycomb and hot butterscotch topped trio arrived. The honey comb had an excellent texture, and the butterscotch was sweet, but rich with a good burnt caramel kick. The service was efficient and friendly. Overall it was an enjoyable experience, though the value for money was variable, with some dishes being worth the expense, and others less so. In total, our three course dinner for two with a bottle of the house red came to about £70 before service. My primary criticism of Jamie's Italian would have to be the décor and the music. It is totally schizophrenic. It gives the impression that the designer was aiming for quirky, but slipped over into just mental, combining about seven different looks - from mint green art deco tiles adorning some walls, to a black and white grafitti-esque painting of trainers on a swirly background on another. It's the same with the music. Happily the restaurant is quite noisy anyway, which distracted me from the backing music which veered - I kid you not - from S Club 7 to drum and bass, via Shaggy and Zero 7. In short, Jamie's Italian have got taste and smell down nicely, sight and sound however could do with a reappraisal. read more

I love Jamie Oliver and I love Italian, so this should be a sure fire 5 star rating. The pasta dishes are always fresh, the spaghetti bolognese is a thing of wonder, and the delicious posh chips always leave me wanting more. The first time I went here I would definitely have given it a 5 star rating. However, having been a few times, I feel it's just that bit better than most good Italian restaurants. The Brighton branch is always busy so it's best to book and the service has always been pretty good. They have some great cocktails too. Expect to pay more than you expected for an Italian. read more
