I learned about this spot from a video on YouTube. I did some research online, and thought that we should check it out. And boy, I'm so glad we did. Jamillah's Garden is amazing! As someone who is always looking for something new, and it's predominantly seafood too? Oh yeah, this is worth the trip! First, before you get in your car with the whole family, this is a take-out spot, and not sit-down or dine-in. Which for me, I like for when it's lunchtime on my day off. The ambiance of the place is it's a kitchen, but the food that comes out of this kitchen is nothing short of stellar! The parking is right on Old York Road, so be prepared to deal with traffic when getting in and out of your car. When you walk inside, you'll be right at the counter, where the menu awaits your perusal. I've been twice so far, and the young lady at the register recognized my brother and I. This is excellent. It's a good feeling when your presence is recognized or remembered. Now, on to the food! On the first visit, I ordered the fish and chips (which was awesome for lunch at work the next day), and an order of their Fish Fried Rice. My god... I had never had fish fried rice before, but now that I have, it will be judged against this! Having had various combinations of fried rice dishes, this one sits at the top! On the second visit, it got the fish fried rice again (of course), and their wings (so spicy!) The food here is spectacular. I'll be trying the Ribs they make on the next visit! The prices were very fair for the amount of food you get. The portions here are very generous! You won't be hungry after eating anything that I've mentioned I had. A few weeks ago I ordered on Uber Eats because I wanted some comfort food. The food did not disappoint. Everything tasted good and the food came pretty quick. The platter is a healthy amount and I couldn't finish it. I warmed up the food the next day and the food was even better the next day. I think this is my go to soul food spot in Philly going forward. Today I went to the location and it's not aesthetically pleasing but the service was fine. It's best to order ahead because they make the food fresh and it can take some time. I tried the food again, but this time I was treated by my friend. I ordered the BBQ ribs with 2 sides of mac & cheese, and he got the fried chicken platter with sweet potatoes and mac & cheese. My ribs weren't nearly as tender as my 1st visit, nor was there enough BBQ sauce. The mac & cheese was ok, but it clearly wasn't made by the same person. I've been wanting to visit Jamillah's for a few years now, and it didn't disappoint. I shared a fish platter with my mom, and we both enjoyed it. The sides? Oh, they're a meal in themselves! I had mac and cheese (yes, please), candied sweet potatoes (delicious), cabbage (solid), and greens. Drove pass this restaurant several times on the weekends; however, the lines were too long. Today, Oct. 4, 2023, the line was the shortest I've ever seen, so I decided to stop. It was about 12:40pm. The wait time from the line to walking out with my food was an hour. The place is small and narrow and take out only. The employees were VERY a polite and pleasant. I even observed them checking each order to make sure it was correct when they called your name. I think they call or text you when your order is ready, but I wasn't asked to give my phone number, so I just waited inside until my name was called. I ordered the fish hoagie and a fish platter with Mac & cheese and candied yams. The platter came with a hefty piece of cornbread. The fish was fried and had a nice golden color and it was fried just right. It was light and crispy. The sauce had a nice flavor and the roll was very fresh. They also gave nice portions of fish. On my platter, I liked that my fish was separate from my side of Mac & Cheese and candied yams. Many places let the fish on top of the sides and the fish gets soggy. The Mac had a pretty good taste. I wished my candied yams were a lil sweeter and softer, but they were good. If the lines were long today, I would have driven past again; but I'm glad I got a chance to get in today. I was torn in deciding to write this review simply because I do not feel good about giving a negative review to a small business; however, there was just too many issues with my order that must be addressed. I ordered a wing platter with potato salad and broccoli and my husband got a fish, potato salad and broccoli platter. Every wing in my platter had broken bones/blood and the color of the meat was weird. The potato salad's texture was mushy and water logged. I tried to doctor it up, but there was no hope for it and the broccoli needed some serious seasoning. My husband, who is not a picky eater said that his fish had a funny taste to it. The service is Good but the wait time is long , the line is usually out the door , typical store where you order not really a seating area . When this establishment opened last year, I kept driving by because of the line outside. For months every time I drove by the line was out the door, even in the rain, customers were holding umbrellas waiting. So, finally I went there at 3 p.m. on a Wednesday and placed an order for a fish and a chicken platter. Saw this restaurant on JLJupiter reviews and when he mentioned it was part of the Garden of Bilal chain I was excited! It is soul food place with the normal fried fish greens Mac and cheese ribs etc. I ordered the ribs because he said they were the best he ever had with Mac and greens as my sides. I also ordered a fish hoagie which I heard was one of the things they were known for. The ribs were great. Flavorful falling off the bone, not to much sauce, really good to me. The greens, bitter, the Mac and cheese uh not great. Edible but almost dry. Not creamy. I would give the food a 8/10 and that's all because of the ribs. I would return for the ribs only. The fish hoagie was ok... lettuce tomato fish snd sauce. On a scale I would give it a 7.. Nothing special. On that note let me say I get my fish hoagies from Zoagies, and I've yet to have a better one then theirs. (Zhrimp and Fish Hoagie) Had I never had a Zoagie this might have bumped up to a 7 1/2 in comparison to others. The staff are nice and polite. A bit slow but working hard on the orders. The rice had too many peppers and of course the fish in it was burnt because of the nasty grease . The Mac was okay . It was overcooked. The fish on the fish sandwich was burnt of course . If you are from the Uptown area of Philadelphia you know Bilal's Garden was a staple and a GEM this is them bringing it back x10 When I called to place my order the young lady who answered was very professional and polite. When I got to the store I was greeted with a warm welcome. Now back to the food I had the fish hoagie which was made to perfection. Yesterday, June 8, 2024, I decided to give Jamillah Garden a try after hearing the meals were basically the same. I ordered the chicken wing platter with collard greens and candied yams. The wings needed more seasoning, the collard greens were not cooked with any smoked meat and were bland. The corn bread looked so good but had no taste. The place wasn't even packed! People who entered after me and ordered left before me with the same amount of food. Staff kept making excuses about the ribs weren't done.
