I have been using Dr. Gate for nearly 10 years now and find him both conscientious and great value. My regular (deep) cleaning is done in around 40 minutes and although anaesthetic is offered, I don't normally need it. Some hygienists take 4 visits to achieve the same as one visit with Dr. Gate. X-Rays and fillings are the same. Quick and no-nonsense with all the work being done by him on the spot and at a high standard with a minimum of visits. Dr. Gate is a true professional. His office is small but I love it. No dealing with a lot of hussle and bussle to get in. He's very honest and pro-active in assessing problems and dealing with treatment. I feel good about seeing him... no fear. He did an extraction of 4 teeth when I had to get braces a while back... and while it was no picnic, of course, it was not a horrible experience either. His facility is in a large building that has pretty good parking too... which can be a bit of a challenge in Sausalito. I really like Dr. Gates. He is very thorough, does push a lot of unnecessary procedures and he is not outrageously priced. It was a little drive to Sausalito from SF, but it's beautiful over there so it's worth it. There is plenty of parking right out front so that when you take into account trying to park in SF, the timing is about the same and you get to drive over the golden gate! Dr Gate is not only a very skilled dentist but he truly cares about his patients. I had some dental emergency over a holiday weekend and had to call Dr Gate. He responded right away and was able to help me out. Within the hour I was able to pick up some pain medication at the pharmacy so that I could get through the weekend and he also rearranged his busy schedule to see me first thing in the morning that Tuesday. Dr Gate does all the work himself and only what is necessary at a very reasonable rates and I never had to wait more than 5 minutes before my appointment, Amazing !!!! I have bounced from dentist to dentist here in Marin. I don't need to bond with my dentist, I just need to feel that I am not being taken advantage of. So many I tried ended by offering some silly service that cost thousands once they determined my teeth are good and no other income would come to them from my mouth. Dr Gate was very different. His office is totally no frills, but its clean and quiet. The equipment seems pretty up to date, and he definitely knows what he is doing. The cleaning was through and comfortable, x-rays were taken, but just a few, nothing over the top. He suggested I replace a cracked filling, but didn't rush me to do it. When I came to get it replaced he didn't even need to use novacaine saying it wasn't needed and indeed, it was not. I am terrified of fillings, but this was so easy, over in a few minutes, and to top it all off, I thought the cost was quite reasonable. You can keep your fancy downtown dentists with massage chairs and koi ponds... Ill stick with Dr Gate! read more

Beside from him personally doing your cleanings, he is as painless and skilled at taking care of the cavities and fillings, but also a great cosmetic dentist. Like many, I never really liked going to the dentist. I would have minor freak outs as they work in my mouth and think about the tools digging into my gums. Though I must say, Dr. Gate was the most gentle and quick cleaning I have ever had. I left the office feeling clean, fresh and happy. And not sore, bleeding, and edgy. My cleaning/routine exam appointment was scheduled for 9:30am one morning. Nobody there. I waited until 10am, office completely empty. I tried calling the number many times, no answer. I called the other number that is listed in the voicemail to contact the Dentist directly, no answer. Like most people, I hate going to the dentist. The bigger problem is that I hated MY dentist...so much that I put off going and then all of a sudden it had been two and a half years! Luckily with Yelp you don't have to go in anywhere blind these days. I called Dr. Gates office and was able to get an appt the same week. The receptionist works from his second office down south, but she was lovely and very quick to respond to my message. His office is nothing fancy, just a one man show (no hygenist or receptionist) but that was fine by me. He ran on time and got me through xrays and cleaning in a half hour. He politely told me the my areas of development, but didn't scold me for being a bad flosser and putting off my regualar visit. I WILL be going back in 6 months, no question. Dr. Gate is an anomaly in today's time of 'arrive and wait' to receive non-personalized attention. He's a great dentist, medically and aesthetically who runs a tight ship, with high quality dentistry in Sausalito, on time and on budget. He's expertly efficient and can be no-nonsense, so if you want to pay for or interact with a touchy feely experience, you may find his clean and spare practice unusual. But because he's working hard to provide the quality he does, for a variety of patients and dental plans, his practice is unique. And over the past 5 years that I've been his patient? I've gone in with both a generous insurance plan and one with much lesser coverage, and still always received the same excellent quality and professionally appropriate and reasonable pricing.
