Right on the Columbia River and before the Interstate Bridge off the 5 Freeway This poor Outdoor Mall gets a really bad rap! Originally opened in 1972 they really are trying and I'm pretty confident things will continue to grow. Businesses that were already here or that have moved in really seem to be taking a gamble as right now things are kind of slow and empty over there, but I'm convinced that with the population boom that this place will eventually get the attention it deserves and all those stuck in that traffic on the 5 may just decide to take a well deserved respite by visiting this great center for commerce. There are quite a few sit down restaurants here, but I'm not sure if there are any quick eateries... wait I take that back... there is a Jimmy John's Subs. The property is quite large and fairly empty, but like I said... I'm pretty confident that will change. Anchor Stores include: Ross Dress for Less, Burlington Coat Factory and Target. They also have Best Buy, TJ Maxx, Staples, Petco, Michael's, Old Navy, and Home Depot over here as well. The runners of their Facebook page seem to really push the Panera Bread over there. Those that have had Panera Bread seem to either really love it or just think it's "ok." I'd say my favorite eatery over there so far and I know I'm probably going to catch a lot of heat for this, but is BJ's simply because I enjoy it and it reminds me of California where I lived for over 20 years!

Master planned shopping center as a mecca for cheap bastards crossing the border to save a few dollars by avoiding sales tax . Other than an historic carousel, there is absolutely nothing unique about this place. 2 walls barely showcase the history of Jantzen Beach and intrigue you only long enough to realize how sad this place has become. (I am a jaded Angelino and as Portland has so much too offer, letting go of Jantzen Beach really seems like a crime to me!) No children laughing, no swimsuits, no amusement park, no museum, almost no reason to stop. Just a beautiful historic carousel reminiscing about 40 years of lost innocence. Like an old man just waiting for something to happen, its lost here. But who cares . . . really. Ross, Target and Burlington Coat Factory are the anchor stores and the center has all the RV Parking a materialistic soul could desire. With any luck, one day, it might just become an outlet . . . we can only hope. Still, for a fifteen minute side trip, you can see one of the largest, fastest 4 row wooden carousels still around. 5 stars for the carousel. A sigh and a tear for everything else.

    They're just not open *here*...

Jantzen Beach Center has one of the most amazing gems in Oregon. The Historic 1921 CW Parker Carousel, is simply majestic.

It was only after pulling into the mall that I realized it was inside the food court. Normally I would've tried to find something else, but to be honest, I wasn't mad about it. Surprisingly enough, Oregon's capitol city of Salem is smaller than I'd expected before making the move. There are a couple of what used to be thriving malls that have dwindled down to host small, lesser known businesses. I grew up in the 80s when malls were the social hub and all the rage. Walking inside, I could see the adaptation to today's consumers with remnants of days gone by. Poised right by the entrance is a K-Pop store and adjacent Anime Town. The little kids play area was just as obnoxious as I remember, all screams included. Upstairs was a bungee style trampoline for bigger kids wanting a little more thrill. There was a Hot Wheels vending machine and fresh fruit dessert stand featuring the ever popular Dubai chocolate over strawberries for a mere $18 (ouch!). Perhaps it was the season, but the parking lot was packed. It was nice to see some of the favs of my youth; PacSun, Vans, and Hot Topic, and FYE. There were also some cool shops I'd never heard of. We enjoyed our lunch and had to depart with little time to spend browsing, but I really want to come back. If there was a deterrent to be mentioned, it's the 8+% tax, a significant hit when you're used to zero state tax.

Coming here, especially during the holidays, to shop, ice skate, grab some caramel corn or a bite to eat in the food court, goof around in an arcade, or watch a movie...these were simple things, but they, like so many mundane things, have the potential to turn into core memories of simpler, happier times. Seeing Lloyd Center gutted like this is...well, it's tough. Forgive me for waxing poetical about a capitalist monolith like a corporate shopping mall, but it sucks seeing it empty like this. Thankfully, during the holidays, a handful of pop-up markets have help to tamp down the echoes that normally resonate within its vast, silent interior, and the ever-bustling ice skating rink was, thankfully, more bustling that ever. It may be a band-aid on a flesh wound, but it was nice to see the place recapture a fragment of its former magic, even for just a moment. Outside of holidays and special events that are attempting, likely in vain, to keep this place afloat, I am not sure entirely what the future holds for Lloyd Center. I've heard it is slated to be torn down, and replaced with one of those walkable, compartmentalized, "20-minute neighborhoods", which *could* be a good thing...and in some places, the deconstruction has already begun (particularly on the exterior west end, where they are building some sort of entertainment venue). Either way, the message is clear: the end of an era is upon us. Sentimentality aside, this is still a great place, even if wandering its hollow halls brings with it an oppressive, unavoidable ennui. Probably worth it to pay it one more visit, in all of its empty, sovereign glory, before it's all gone, if Lloyd Center ever meant anything to you, as it did with me.

There were numerous other retailers that I would frequent as well, but their names escape me. Today, The Galleria building is as stately as ever. Built in 1910 and then known as the Olds, Wortman & King Department Store until 1974, it is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and an official Portland Historic Landmark. These days, that once vivacious atmosphere is lifeless and is now home to The Western Culinary Institute, Brooks Brothers, and City Target, a Target Store that is much smaller and more dense than the sprawling suburban Target stores.
