This dojo is an awesome place for you and your kids to learn Karate from the devoted Sensei. Sensei Doan is the main instructor for every session. You can always tell he loves what he teaches. The students pay a fixed fee. The good thing is they can come as many times during the week as they want to. Sensei Doan explains how each body shift, arm and leg movement, block, strike, kick in each kata can be used in practical ways. He analyzes kata and extracts fighting techniques from the movements of a "form" (kata). My kids get excited to see how they can apply the techniques they learn in the Katas. They look forward to attend these special sessions of the week. One thing I like about this Dojo is all students come here to learn. Sensei Doan always emphasizes how important it is for each student to concentrate on the lessons and improve his or her techniques to the next level. He teaches his students to respect themselves to earn the respect from others. I totally/completely/explicitly agree with both reviewers Hoang and Vuong about Sensei Patrick and his dojo. They have said it all. As a "helicopter okaasan" (my other very honorable nickname) I must find a good martial arts (MAs) place for my baby. Yes, there are tons out there just like dentists and doctors but who would you trust? Since the day he was born, I had switched over 9 doctors not bc I am not faithful, it's my sacred duty that I must not stop seeking until I find the best or 2nd-to-best doctor for him. Similarly, finding a good martial art master who is caring, devoting, disciplined, and trustworthy, plus flexible with schedules at the same time is not that easy. My search started a couple years ago and landed on another type of MAs, my son didn't learn much after a year and he was very frustrated n didn't feel like coming. Took him to a few more places to check out including the very well known Teakwondo place in our community, like almost every parents I know would send their kids there, I still could not feel the vibe. Until one day my friend who is also an MAs master told me if you are looking for a structured and compassionate master, then bring him to this Sensei bc he'd sent his kids there for many years. Then another friend recommended the same place so I must check it out... Now here we are very extremely happy bc both of us not only practicing Karate, but also Judo and Jujitsu. Sensei is real strict (he reminds me somewhat of a drill seargent, not to that in-the-face-screaming extent, dont be scared, usually and simply 10 or 20 "get down say hello to California") but that's what we all expect from a master, dont we? read more

I have a 6 years-old son and like any other parent, I want my son not only be good at school but also be able to avoid bullying and self-defend when needed. Therefore, I decided to let him join the Martial Arts. After the decision, it took me months just to find out which Martial Arts best fits him. I spent lots of time going to every single Martial Arts Center in the area including Taekwondo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Aikido, Shaolin Kungfu, and so on to observe and inquire information. What I had found are that they are either not flexible in schedule, requiring contracts, too expensive, or too much contacts as it's easy to get injury (like Jiu-Jitsu even though I do want my son to learn and gain confidence from contacts). And most importantly, I've never seen any Master teaching the kids as he only let the higher belt ranking students to teach the kids. As the result, I chose this Japan Martial Arts Center in Santa Ana for my son to learn. Here, he can learn Karate, Judo, and Jiu-Jitsu which, I believe, are the most practical Martial Arts. The Master, Sensei Patrick Doan, really inspires and knows how to teach the kids. My son has joined the center for 6 months and has learned a lot from being disciplined and following instructions to punching, kicking, forming, performing Katas, and you name it. I have much respect and appreciation for Sensei Doan's Martial Arts background and teaching conscience. He also made it easy and possible for the parents as the price is really affordable, as you can drop your kids at any class of the day, and as many days in the week as you like for the same price with no string attached. I don't think you can find a second place like this anywhere. Because of all these, my sisters just let their daughters join recently, 2 days ago. Lastly, talking about the background of the Master, I'm really picky on this because it would be as waste of time, money, and effort if you didn't choose the right Master. Thus before letting my son join the center, I did a little research and found that Sensei Doan is a 5th Dan in Shito Ryu Karate-Do. He has studied Martial Arts for 37 years including Shorin Ryu, Jujitsu and Kodakan Judo. He is a member of USA NKF/JKF Federation. With his many years of training, hard work and dedication, he has won many competitions and is a 2-time U.S.A. National gold medalist in Karate-Do. You can google and find out more about him. This is a real comment and is not an advertisement as to my understanding, Sensei Doan has never done so.
