When demonstrating a technique, they ask the kids questions about it to keep them engaged and make sure they're paying attention. Everything at A-Team is earned, nothing is given. I've been training at A-Team for almost 10 years and there's great things I must say about this place. Whether you're a hobbyist or a competitor, A-Team will be the right place for you. Through the last 10 years of my life, I've gone through different stages in my jiu jitsu career. At the very beginning, I was attending college which provided the luxury of training everyday and allowing me to compete. During this time, Master Ali and Coach CJ prepared me physically and mentally for competition. Extra time is spent after normal scheduling to help everyone who was competing ensure we were in prime shape. Techniques and competition strategy were always a core component. Master Ali and Coach CJ's coaching and expertise has helped me and others win many tournaments! And during times where my professional career was more time demanding (I was only able to train 1-2 times a week) I turned into a hobbyist. The same amount of attention and care was provided to myself and other hobbyists even though there were others actively competing. This still allowed me to grow with the team. Other schools typically avert more time competitors instead of hobbyists. Teammates here are always willing to help and they do not mind when you ask them to share those moves. We all elevate each other. Nobody here has ever tried to physically harm teammates. They are careful and mindful when rolling with other partners. I've had 0 major injuries since my team here. Maybe a bruise or two every other month but that's it. A-Team also provides structure and cleanliness which some other gyms unfortunately lack. Staph infections are quite common at other gyms. The class structure and curriculum help build a strong jiu jitsu foundation. Exploring other techniques are encouraged, and the coaches will be there to help refine them. There's not enough good things I can say about A-Team so I'll tell you about my favorite things about the school. A-Team Jiu-Jitsu is a great place to train in BJJ. As a female who has trained not just as an adult but as a pre-teen and teenager under Master Ali, I highly recommend you try out a few free classes at A-Team. They are very family and detail oriented. I see so many fathers and sons training together. Mothers and Daughters training together. Couples training together. Everyone works together as a team to grow and improve. All of the coaches are patient and encourage questions. At the end of every class, we sit and the coach asks if anyone has any questions. They break details and concepts down to the simplest of steps and tinniest of details you never thought needed to be considered to improve your game. As a woman, I feel safe to train with any of the men of any size and rank. We are taught how to flow roll, which allows both students to practice techniques, not just smash and go hard all the time. Though once you feel more comfortable rolling and want to, for example: get ready for a tournament and train harder, they will put you with people that can push you. My Jiu-Jitsu journey started with Master Ali when I was 11 years old. I got my blue belt when I was 16. Unfortunately, when I was 18 life pulled me away from Jiu-Jitsu. Over a decade later at 29, my wife wanted to get into Jiu-Jitsu. She brought me back into the sport and back to my Jiu-Jitsu family. Now she is addicted. I joke its hard to get her off the mat now after class because she wants to continue to review and prefect whatever technique or concept she is working on that day. When I was younger Ali was able to keep things light and fun but also still very focused. In middle school and high school Jiu-Jitsu was my outlet. I didn't do so well with school but on the mat I felt like I could actually learn something and achieve the goals I was reaching for. It taught me discipline and focus. I'm glad my parents decided to start me young. Later when guys would give me a hard time often times, I didn't even have to do or say anything. My friends would just say something like "Hey you don't want to mess with her. She knows Jiu-Jitsu!" They would scoff or whatever and walk away. There have been times someone grabbed my arm. I was able to break the grip, step back and create space. They get so surprised by me just being able to do that they backed off. I could go on with more examples... because of those experiences even off that mat, It is my opinion that every female should have at least a blue belt in jiu-jitsu. read more

You will not receive or find better instruction and care of BJJ than A-Team. There is no gym that teaches JJ in more detail and competency than here. I have trained at many gyms across the US and under many world champions and no one compares to what I have learned in such a short time and continue to learn at A-Team. As a brown belt joining this gym in 12/2020 I immediately realized that I have never been taught precisely why I do the things in JJ. I felt not only like a white belt again but also that I had to truthfully relearn JJ fundamentally or else I would not be properly prepared for a black belt one day. The team holds nothing back from its students; you receive decades of JJ knowledge and mentorship that feels like it should come at an extra cost but is given freely every day. Many places withhold their full potential from their students for various reasons, along with the lack of care and personal investment into them. Every class at A-Team feels like a seminar where everyone is on the edge of their seat trying to make sure they pay attention to all the details. If you miss something the team will routinely provide help before you even know you're doing something wrong. Too many gyms ignore this and just allow their students to create bad habits. A-Team however, takes JJ very seriously and is not there to just collect your gym membership. Their goal is true investment into their students and the art which you will notice immediately. A-Team is a hidden gem in the mass of so many JJ gyms in California. The BEST place to learn Jiu Jitsu! They always have at least 3 blackbelts at each practice walking around, making sure everyone is learning the moves together correctly. My first day was a 1 on 1 lesson with Luis, he made me feel welcome and was very excited to welcome a new member to the team. Everyone here is passionate about this sport and loves doing what they do. They break down each move you're learning, step by step and they always answer questions to help you learn. I've been addicted to A-Team Jiujitsu for about 3 years now... I'm about 120 lbs (male). Most people know jiujitsu as the great equalizer for smaller fighters (or smaller people who get caught in a fight). But after trying countless reputable jiujitsu gyms around the world, I noticed many of them do not make it easy for smaller students to stay, learn, and grow. A-Team Jiujitsu is different... I feel comfortable here because more than anything else, Master Ali -- owner and head coach of A-Team -- stresses the importance of being a team. What does it mean to be a team? All of us are taught to be kind, helpful, and considerate. We don't leave anyone behind. Everyone learns jiujitsu differently and even applies each technique differently.
