I live in NJ but my daughter is a University of Michigan student. She complained that her 20 year old Nissan was making a loud exhaust noise. I knew I was coming into town in a couple of weeks to see her, so I scheduled an appointment with Japanese Auto Pros based on sizable volume of good Yelp reviews. The place was smaller than I imagined, I think just two bays. They called me just two or three hours after drop off to tell me parts and labor estimate for an exhaust pipe and catalyst. They recommended wipers and I had already requested an oil change. I felt the prices were fair. I gave them the verbal to proceed, they ordered the parts and called me 10am the next morning to tell me the car was done. Upon pick up they complemented me on the condition of this 20 year old car, updated me on good condition of tires and brakes and a couple of other items, giving me confidence that they checked it out pretty thoroughly. They said to relay to my daughter that they are happy to assist her with concerns she has with the Nissan, even if Dad is not in town. I feel confident recommending this place to other students and parents of students. I am happy that Yelp led me to this place. My Dad trained me to fear auto shops and to avoid it like the plague ever since I started driving. He always warned me of something to the effect of how they will take every opportunity to bleed you dry, especially because you're a girl who knows nothing about cars and an easy target to overcharge. Well, he isn't wrong, which is why I was even more impressed with Japanese Auto when I finally caved and had to taking my aging Toyota Avalon to the shop. The steering wheel in my car was getting progressively more difficult to turn. And while the problem in my car turned out to be an incredibly simple and straight forward issue (low power steering fluid), the guys at the shop were really efficient, straight forward, and honest about the problem and answered all the concerns I had about the car. I was worried about a possible leak in the power steering fluid system as I had just refilled my power steering fluid not too long before having to bring it into the shop, but they checked for a leak and verified was okay. Not only did they educate me on the leakage system and ensured I was filling up the power steering fluid properly, but they dissuaded me from changing out the parts even if there were a leak as it is often more cost effective to just continuously refill the steering fluid. This interaction alone forever changed my schema of auto shops. I was super impressed with every aspect of the encounter at Japanese Auto. I was in and out of the shop within 20 minutes, the problem was rapidly fixed, the steering wheel is buttery smooth now, and the price was INCREDIBLY fair to say the least. I would definitely recommend Japanese Auto to anyone needing to have their (Japanese) vehicle looked at. Props to my boyfriend for the solid referral. read more

They are always extremely fair and transparent about how I can fix my car in the most cost effective way possible (even if that means they lose out on a potential expensive repair). These guys are the best. I will not take my Honda any where else. This past year Brandon and his staff where able to fix my CRV after the dealership in Brighton could not. I had taken it into the dealership multiple times for the same issue and spent a couple thousand dollars but the problem remained. Took it to Japanese Auto Repair and within 5 minutes they found the problem and repaired it within hours and saved my money. I returned today because my car is making another noise and I am heading to Florida this weekend and wanted to make sure it was safe to drive. My car has over 270k miles on it...they weren't unable figure out where the noise was coming from but assured me that it was safe to drive. For the age of the car it's in great condition. I usually do my own work on our cars, but got busy with work this fall. I used Yelps "get a quote" feature when I was looking for quotes for the following: "Per axle price to replace brake rotors and pads on a 2006 Mazda 6". Yelp sent my ask to all the shops on this side of Ann Arbor. Japanese Auto was the only one to respond to my ask with an actual number. Every other response I received asked me to call in to get a price, which would have led to a "we'll need to see it before we can accurately give you a price". Every service writer in Ann Arbor could learn a thing or two from the writers at Japanese Auto. Highly recommend them. read more

If you want your car to leave in worse shape than it went in, this is the place to go. Overly priced, extremely rude and completely unreliable. We had our brakes replaced on our CR-V a few weeks ago and are already experiencing issues with their "work." Also was pulled over this morning on my way to work by a cop because the brake lights weren't working -- another product of their fine service. When we called them, without any apology the "manager" said we could drop it off again but that they "can't predict what happens when it leaves the shop." Which is to say, they have ZERO faith in their own work and won't stand behind their service at all. That's fine if they were a clothing store or book shop, but knowingly sending people out onto the roads in unsafe vehicles is dangerous and frankly despicable. read more

The air conditioner in my Honda had gone out and i was recommended to Japanese Auto as a place that was honest and ethical and wouldn't "take advantage" of a female client. I am pregnant and desperately needed my car fixed in the heat of summer. I took my car in and was told it was fixed within 2hrs, that it just needed to be topped off with Freon, cost $300. The next day I noticEd hot air again, a few days later it wasnt working at all. I called back and was told it would be another two weeks before they could get it in. They hypothesized it's was the compressor which would be $1200. I got suspicious and decided to take it to another mechanic. Turns out, there was a hole in the condensor, which would have been obviously if they had properly looked at my car the first time, doing more than look at the freon levels. I wont take my car back and caution anyone who goes here to double check their work. read more

Excellent service. Best auto shop I've ever been a customer of. Had to get my battery replaced. They first made sure that my old one was really dead by charging it, so that I might not have to get a new battery (the 75 month battery was only 36 months old, so it should have had some juice left -stupid napa). They even came to my apartment a to jump start my car to get it to their shop. Granted I live less than a block away, so don't expect them to come to you, but it shows their high level of customer service. read more

I half expected a Japanese employee or owner who might feel a little conservatively apprehensive towards Americans after our releasing the atom bomb and the internment camps. Even if there were Japanese owners or workers at this Japanese auto repair place, I still would not have expected to actually see them wearing anything expressing their personal views. This hat however was NOT what I expect to see in a business. Saw all the positive reviews they have and decided to try their service! If you are tired of all the "you have to fix this.. you have to change that... " from your dealer, then try Japanese auto. Cost wise, I'm not sure if it will save you a lot, but it will be cheaper than your dealer. They strictly go by appointment only and they get really busy so I usually have to wait for ~1 week to get my car checked. Of course if you're urgent, they will not hesitate to compromise. Honest diagnosis: I brought in the laundry list of repairs my dealer gave me and showed it to the technician. My dealer quoted me ~1k to get everything fixed so i was expecting this visit to cost about $800. Two hours later, the technician called and told me that only 1 out of the 5 items needed to be fixed, and that was my air filter, which costed about $35. I ask about the other 4 items and he told me to come back 6-8 months later. Not urgent. :) Cost: I've done two oil changes with them, 1 filter change and 1 brake repair. I compared their prices and my dealer's quotation and realize that their service repair(oil change etc) is a lot cheaper than the dealer, ~30-40%. And their parts repairs (brakes etc) is about 10-15% cheaper than my dealer. (Pardon my use of terms, I am obviously not a car person). All in all, it's a place I would feel safe to send my car back to. :) P.S If you're wondering if they fix luxury cars, yes they do. I have one and they take care of it well. read more

Awesome service! Do not let the appearance fool you. These guys are top notch, honest, and do a quality job. I have taken my +15 y.o. Honda to them for the past 3 years. I only happened upon it when I was living near downtown Ann Arbor. There have been times where I have had some frequent misfiring in the winter. They looked at the car (twice), ran diagnostics and didn't find a problem so didn't charge me! (I imagine the dealership would have charged me at least $40 for a diagnostic check). The guys at Japanese Auto even said it didn't need a tune up but if the misfiring continued, he could try a tune up and change out the spark plugs. And with their advice, I stopped using Meijer and Speedway gasoline in the winter which completely resolved the engine misfiring!!! Score. read more

I have loved Japanese Auto since I was a grad student 15 years ago. With my first car, I had no idea what I was doing, and I constantly thought the little noises I heard were more than old age. The guys (this was before the girl hire) there told me more than once that nothing was wrong and charged me nothing for their time. I trust them to do only the work that needs to be done. Joe has also referred me to transmission, tire, and body work people he trusts, and I have always had good experiences with these people. If they do an oil change while they do a service for you, it's pretty cheap - $10 or $15. read more

I could've sworn I wrote a review for JA...anywho, I was über happy when I found this shop when I arrived to Michigan. Since I had always taken my car to an auto shop that only services Honda/Acura vehicles in Cali, I felt so comforted knowing that I wouldn't be ripped off or taken advantage of. I've been taking my car here for the past five years and was so pleased with the services done on my car and the customer service. Joe is always so nice, up front and very efficient! I've brought my car here for oil changes, replace brakes and for minor issues(looking the car over after my car lost to the mounds of snow a few years back). I love that JA is not all about selling you things you don't need and they are willing to have you stop by if the car is continuing to have issues, without having a set appointment. The only thing bad about JA is the location...especially with the construction right across the street. Other than that, I would highly recommend this place! Prices have gone up slightly(oil change~$50, front brakes~$275), but definitely worth it. Finding a good mechanic is like finding a dentist you don't dread going to. JA is definitely my fav place to take my car to. read more

Japanese Auto has done several smaller fixes on my Honda CRV over the years. They always do good work and explain everything clearly. They tend to get booked up, so an appointment is a must. Expect to wait for about a week until they can take a look at your car. Last time I checked they didn't take American Express. I would give five stars if (a) their oil changes were not ridiculously overpriced and (b) the guy who answers the phone wouldn't be such a grouch. If you're looking for an oil change, buy a high quality oil online and take it to an oil change place to get something better at a fraction of the price and without having to wait for a week. As another reviewer mentioned, I would also lose the Trump hat during business hours. Given that this is Ann Arbor, I'd expect that most customers aren't racist old white guys. read more

$1,200 to replace my a/c compressor in a 2001 Camry. That is so far beyond absurd for a bolt on part that is $200 tops and labor that should not be over 4 hours. On top of that, the soonest they were willing to look at the car was one week out. read more

It was a simple blinker bulb (took them 30 seconds). It was well worth the wait. They are always respectful, knowledgeable and get it done!! I'd give 6 stars if I could. Brought my 2012 Honda Accord in here after getting a fishy estimate from Germain Honda - saying my alternator went out due to an oil leak from the spool valve. Brandon was honest and transparent with me from the start - showing me that there wasn't any oil on the alternator. Then he gave me a fair estimate on replacing it, and after running some diagnostics, he called me back and said that my alternator was just fine... saving me over $1,000 (Germain's original estimate). Brandon's a great guy who runs an honest company. Will definitely come back here when my car actually needs work! read more

I took my 12 year old Lexus here for a muffler problem this week. It's family owned & operated by good, honest people. A bunch of people recommended this place to me after I had a terrible experience @ the Lexus dealership. They won't upsell or automatically suggest the most expensive option if there's a cheaper way of getting the work done. They saved me $540 on my muffler job by knocking some rust off & replacing a gasket rather than running an entire new exhaust system. They also hung around an extra 20 minutes after closing time waiting for me to pick the car up after work, which I obviously appreciated a ton! read more
