They are honest, don't try to push things that you don't need OR can't afford to do at the moment (at the time, I could only afford to get one thing taken care of a list of things. They informed me of the condition of the other issue and didn't pressure to get it done. My budget was tight so it was nice to know I had some time before thing needed to get done) They are a popular shop so getting an appointment may take some time, they're worth the wait IF you can. read more

I've been to this place a couple times with my car for routine maintenance, but after this last experience I think I won't be going back. Biggest problem was the price. Holy cats. They charged me $596 (before tax) to change my sparkplugs. It seemed crazy, but I'd dropped the car off and didn't want to mess around dropping it someplace else, so I said go ahead. A few days later I called the dealership to ask what they'd charge. It was $304 (labor and parts). So just about half what Steeb charges. I'd be okay if Steeb was a little more. But honestly, this is gouging. On top of that, they didn't listen to what I asked them to do. Gave them a written list including what NOT to do (oil change, tire rotation). They did both and charged for the oil change. When I figured that out after I left, they made me come back to the shop to give me a refund. They didn't upsell me on stuff (so they get a couple stars for that). But I was disappointed and am looking for a new option going forward. read more

I am posting this review because there are two earlier reviews that are totally not what this man and his business is all about. We have been bring both of vehicles here for several years. They are both older vehicles that we are trying to keep as long as possible. Steve and his staff are not only honest, but knowledgeable to the extent that they made the dealership service people look very bad. They never do more than needs to be done. A couple of times because our vehicles are older we had problems that might be considered unusual, Steve his staff always have the answer and solutions that aren't going to break the bank. We are so absolute in our confidence of Steve and his staff that we travel over 50 miles one way to have our vehicles serviced !!! read more

Having a mechanic to call to your own is one of the greatest pleasures in life. My life, maybe. Well I am so happy to say that Steve Steeb is my mechanic. I have been seeing them since 2014 and they are very consistently thoughtful and thorough. I have both made appointments weeks in advance and received same day service. I recommend this mechanic highly because they live up to their reputation as the most honest in town. They have seen leaks in my pinion seals, but instead of trying to make a quick buck, they say it probably could go another six months and that I should plan for the down the road. Last year, when my reverse gear went out, they let me drop it off the same day. After checking it out, they recommended a transmission guy in Dexter, because Steve said he's the only guy he trusts around here. I had a very reasonably priced replacement with his recommendation, quoted much less then what my peers have paid going elsewhere. I'll end by saying that I'm so happy with their service that despite moving 4 hours away, I have returned today to get my regular maintenence. If that isn't a glowing recommendation then I don't know what is. I have to also add that they don't talk down to customers and especially to women, which is such a trope with mechanics. read more

I think I already gave them a fabulous review, but wanted to remark as to a couple negative reviews I see here. Steve is upfront about price. He runs his business like I would run a business, hiring top people and setting a fair rate. Why in the world you would pay someone to change your headlight bulbs, heaven only knows. I change my own. The bulbs themselves do cost, and it is not necessarily a short time commitment, depending on your car. And as for getting estimates, good solid estimates and advice, ALWAYS, ALWAYS in the 9 years I have been going there, I have gotten a comprehensive estimate, clear pricing, excellent service. I could have my oil changed for less than half of what I pay them. Yet I go here. Here's why: Safety. All the checks. Twice I have had other places tell me I needed new tires, immediately. Once on my Ford van, once just recently for my newer Nissan. Steve told me the truth, 9 months likely from now, not tomorrow. (a bit less time for my Ford Windstar which Steeb took me to 253,000 miles on. And on that Windstar, because they had the car up on the lift and were thoroughly inspecting it, they saw the subframe bolts were rusted out and literally saved my life. I would have been on the freeway crossing the country to visit family when that fell. As it was, I knew it was likely and I was driving on Michigan Ave in Saline when it fell. And over to Steve it went. And although it later became a recall, because Steve found it first, my subframe was brand new! Ford later stuck and patched a bunch of them up. When they don't usually do a repair, and would have to charge more, they have referred me to others, I have called him up while needing out of town repairs and gotten advice that saved me over a thousand dollars. Yeah, over time, the investment has paid off many times over. Oh, and as to brake job guy. Yeah. Their records are thorough, computerized and always available. They reference them at will if I have a question. I keep all receipts and info in a file, so i would not have had the confusion you experienced. For anyone else looking here I can tell you the likelihood of Steve and co. being the confused party, is pretty unlikely. read more

A great shop with a knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful staff. "Satisfied" doesn't begin to describe my experience with Steeb's (delighted? tickled? ecstatic?). I have a new-ish minivan which I bring to Steeb's for all of its (un)scheduled maintenance. I have been completely satisfied every time. The first time I brought it in for an oil change, they recommended that I replace the rear brakes at the next service. I dutifully set up my next appointment to include the rear brake job. When I picked it up, however, they told me that it wouldn't hurt to wait until next time so they hadn't done the brakes. Today, I called in because I was having a problem with my driver's side power mirror and asked if there was any way they could take a look at it the same afternoon. John had me bring it in and they were able to fix it at no charge. One final word about their location: there's a bus stop on the #6 line literally 15 steps from the shop office. So, if you drop off your car for the day, you can ride the bus into work and then pick it up on your way home; or if you are a student, the #6 runs right down State Street and will drop you off on Central Campus. read more

Steve Steeb's is one of the most trustworthy auto repair shops I have ever worked with. It is easy to tell from how far out they are booked that this is an institution with a loyal following. When we brought in our rather neglected auxiliary car for a good going over, we expected to have to prioritize which repairs we were going to do. Instead, through some creative approaches to dealing with a few of the repairs that needed doing, we were able to get everything taken care of at once. Took my 16 year old beater car to Steve's last week. I work full time, so often I can't always get to the places I need to go during their business hours. I explained this to Steve who suggested I drop of my car and keys in their drop box on the 4th of July. This was not only super convenient for me, but also very accommodating of Steve; I really appreciated this gesture. My car is not at all in great shape and I explained that I just need to know if its time to call it quits or do another fix. Again, Steve was super understanding-- he let me know that they would take a look at it and give me their opinion. I called the next day and they gave me the run down on what repairs were needed. They were honest and straight up with the answer (e.g., could be a cheap repair, but its looking more like a larger repair). I'm a young woman who knows pretty much nothing about cars and I can't begin to tell you how many times I've been lied to, my money and business taken advantage of, and flat out ripped off at car mechanic shops. I did not feel this way at all when talking to Steve and Patrick (who I spoke to about the repair and cost). I even asked what Patrick's opinion was about reselling vs scrapping, to which he was real about. Every interaction, from the first hello of the first phone call to the explanation of the repair, was helpful, friendly, understanding, and honest. I went back the following day after work to pick up my car, Patrick gave me a print-out of their explanation of the repair and they also ran the codes on the service engine lights for me. This was so helpful for me-- I can fully understand what's going on with the car and I'm not just paraphrasing a phone conversation when I try to resell/scrap my car. I chose not to get the repair done simply because I have an old car that I've already put thousands of dollars of repairs into. If I could afford a simple fix or a bigger fix on a car that I loved, I would absolutely go to Steve's for the repair. I'm going to be recommending Steve's to friends and family in the A2/Ypsi are for sure. I'm in the process of getting a second opinion as well (just covering all of my bases) with another shop local to Ann Arbor and I've hated every interaction I've had with them so far. I feel like I've been talked down to every time I've spoken with their staff. Moral of the story-- definitely check out Steve's, especially if you're like me and don't feel comfortable going to any service shop. read more

I was given Steve Steeb's name by a coworker, and I was very impressed with their service. I first went there for a second opinion on work that another place had told me HAD TO BE done before I could have an alignment done. I'm so glad I had them check it out because in their opinion, the very expensive repair was not necessary (and I see 2 other reviews on this place's yelp page with similar stories...shame on them) I did have them do some other routine maintenance work for me, and their prices were more than fair. Those "ultra premium break pads and rotors" that cost $600... that were guaranteed against warping, rusting and pitting... crapped out within a year... about 15,000 miles. Dealership had to replace the pads and machine the rotors. Oh and apparently my rotors were the type that could not be machined before according to these guys. They refused to provided even a ballpark estimate of how much the brake job would cost until I dropped the car off. Unfortunately I do not have the luxury of having a back up car and the ability to drive two cars to drop one off. Apparently these guys don't understand that dropping your car off and choosing not to go with them because you were surprised by outrageous prices...is not a luxury most people can afford as one day without your car is already too much and impacts one's ability to get to work... Oh and I see that they're no longer open 3 days out of the week. read more

Steve Steeb Service has done a fantastic job in helping restore the mechanical operation of my classic 1970 Mustang Mach I Super Cobra Jet. The work was difficult and involved removing the old engine, sending it out for a custom rebuild, installing the new engine, as well as repairs to steering, brakes, suspension, etc. Steve performed the work himself and he is truly a wizard! While there was a lot of difficult and creative repairs, and parts were sometimes impossible to come by, the finished product is fantastic! Despite all the major work on an old car, the cost was extremely reasonable. Not often I would give a business a perfect score, but these guys are simply the best! Take your car to them if you want quality work at a reasonable price. read more

I've been taking my cars to Steve for years and would never dream of going anywhere else. It would be impossible to find a repair shop with better service or friendlier staff. As a woman with little repair knowledge, I was nervous the first time I walked into Steve's shop. I was quickly put at ease by his quirky humor and warm willingness to teach me what I needed to know. He even offered to let me watch as he explained what he was doing and why. Over the years I have learned so much about my vehicles and no longer feel intimidated when a problem arises. Other reviewers have mentioned this shop's honesty and I have to agree with that assessment. I've gone to Steve thinking I needed a costly repair and have been talked out of it by one of the guys because it just wasn't necessary! Imagine that, someone who'd rather tell you the honest truth rather than just take your money. A couple of times I dropped in unannounced with minor problems (though I didn't know they were minor at the time ... e.g. alarm wouldn't turn off, mystery rattling sound when I made a turn, window stuck open) ... each of those times someone came right out and found the issue in a couple of minutes, fixed it and... wait for it... didn't charge me! Baffled by this kindness the first time it happened I had to ask Steve about it ... his answer was simple: if he helps with the little things, hopefully I'll think of him when I need a bigger repair. Well, that genuine good will, knowledgeable service and amazing team have kept me coming back year after year. No one WANTS to need an auto repair but, if you do, having it done at Steve Steeb Service will be as near painless an experience as it can get. If there is one business which should get 5 stars on Yelp, Steve Steeb Services is definitely the place! Not only they are courteous, friendly, but they are also very competent and trustworthy. I left my car for a comprehensive oil change and asked them to do a tire rotation as well. They called me back to inform me there was no need for a tire rotation; they would do it if I insisted on doing it, which I didn't end up doing. I asked them to check my car as the coolant temperature looked abnormally low; they checked my car, and didn't find anything wrong with it, so they didn't charge me anything. That made my day, and even my week which had been awful til then. I had a suspension problem last year, I first went to Firestone downtown AA, they estimated the problem at $1,500. I went to Steve Steeb, they diagnosed the same problem and estimated the reparations to $900. In the end I paid less than $800 as they found they could order a special part for my car which was less expensive than what they had first estimated. So I paid 50% less than what I'd have paid at Firestone which saved me more than $700!! To sum up: I just love that they don't push you to buy parts or services if there is no sound reason for it. Mechanics like Steve Steeb are rare. I definitely recommend them whatever the problem on your car is. Even if you usually go to your dealer, I recommend to get Steve's second opinion when you have a problem! You may save hundreds of dollars. If there are businesses I'll miss when I move out of Michigan, Steve Steeb Services is one of them. read more

I was charged nearly double what I last paid to have both of my headlight bulbs replaced (nearly $60) in my '03 Toyota. I suspect the dealership may have been a cheaper option. I took my old Saturn there for a problem I was having with my brakes. I explained that the car was probably on its way out and that I'd be driving something else in the next few months. Steve and his staff fixed only what was necessary to get my car going again. They were extremely friendly, explained what was going on, and my bill was exactly what I was quoted on the estimate. After that, I took my car there again for a starting problem. They diagnosed the problem, and when I discovered I had a way to get that and my air conditioning fixed through a mechanic friend (out of town), he didn't charge me a thing and was happy to be able to have diagnosed the issue. I'm taking all of my mechanical needs to this service shop. Couldn't ask for someone more upfront, honest, reliable, and friendly. read more
