Orion is just across the road, a bit down Parkland Plaza, from the BMW dealer, do why go to the BMW dealer and get hosed, when these guys are better mechanics, who save you money, save the planet, and serve you better coffee than you make at home? They work on all sorts of European cars too, don't get me wrong. Elegant, comfortable shop, with the smartest and nicest mechanics and staff, looking out for YOUR interests, above their billable hours. Really expert at telling you what needs to be fixed now, what can wait, and what your options are. Their shop floor is clean enough to eat off, and they are just top notch, honest, and caring individuals. Always done right on my BMW's, and have taken care of many folks I know, regardless if they are driving a tuned supercar, or keeping the old grocery getter on the road. Especially good and respectful to the ladies -- no mansplaining, greaseball, dudebro mechanic BS here, and they moonlight as artists, organic gardners, and philosophers - the kinda guys you would wanna bring home to you mother, if that's your thing. read more

The very best around. I have an older Mercedes that my teenage son drives. It's had a few mechanical things needing fixing, plus routine maintenance. I trust them 100% for their honest evaluation and recommendation. I know zero about cars, and they always educate me and provide options. When my teenager hit a deer and had a bit of bumper damage they found an inexpensive way to hide the damage without having to fully replace the bumper (which I didn't want to do on an older car) so it looks almost like new. I have several German cars and hands down will never take them anywhere else. (I do not personally know the owners or anyone who works there). Sadly, the Honda Accord I referenced there as maintained by Orion was hit and totaled with 192K miles on it. The search for a used replacement has been filled with kind sales reps, but challenging, and as yet, unfruitful. They were rude, pushy, put in the wrong break parts originally and then tried to sell me thousands of dollars of parts and labor for my car that wasn't necessary. They never did what they said they would and they made we wait for over two weeks lying to me about what they were doing. They even confused me with another customer and mid conversation I had to remind them who I was. My husband is foreign and they never wanted to deal with him and would only look at me. They only cared about who was paying them. And when we finally came to take our car to a different mechanic they sent us away with broken parts and then told my husband they didn't want his kind to come there again. They didn't want his business. They would rather take advantage of their customers by up charging and making money off of work that's not necessary. It's dishonest and wrong to treat people that way or do any sort of business that way. I would give them absolutely NO STARS!! read more

I've lived in Ann Arbor for (gasp!) 55 years, and owned cars here for the last 45 of those years. I've had several great independent mechanics over those years. Orion, which has been tending my cars for the last couple of decades, is the best of the best. I can say "amen" to all the stories in all the other 5-star reviews you'll see (on Google, Yelp, etc.) regarding Orion's service, their helpfulness, their integrity, their friendliness, their creativity, their competence, and (last but not least) their dog. Let me add that, unlike the late-model BMWs and Lexuses that grace a lot of Orion's service bays, my typical car is a twelve-year-old Civic featuring 200,000 miles and plenty of rust. So I can testify that Orion is not just a shop for tending to the luxury fleet. Rich and company are equally great at managing cars through their Golden Years - including sage advice on what is and isn't worth fixing, how to keep it running at minimal cost, and sometimes some gentle counseling that it's better to junk this old guy rather than paying us to fix him up once more. read more

I first came to Orion in 2008 when I parked my car at work, and on trying to restart it, the car was completely dead. The car had started easily and had no issues on the drive over, which made me think it wasn't a battery, starter or alternator issue. I called the BMW dealership for assistance, and they only suggested towing the car to their service facility. I called Orion and spoke with Rich, who listened to my story and offered some troubleshooting tips over the phone before having it towed in for service. Turned out it was as he thought, that the chip inside the key had gone bad, making the car think it was not the actual key, thereby triggering a security feature and not letting it start. I used the valet key in my glove compartment and the car started immediately. Rich won my trust over the phone that day, and during future visits for maintenance/repairs and oil changes, he was extremely thorough in explaining what was needed, as well as whether any work would need to be done immediately or down the road. He would often times ask me, "how long do you want to keep the car?", and tailor his recommendations accordingly. Highly recommended, especially for BMW owners as the prices they quote will easily beat the dealership. The staff are incredibly friendly and very easy to work with, and will offer free rides from the shop! read more

I have been going to Orion for 2 years now, they are very knowledgeable, friendly and professional. They always go above and beyond your expectations from a service standpoint. Right after my first visit I noticed a HUGE rub on my passenger side door. I called them and told them and they did not hesitate to say, "We will take care of the damage." After further investigation it was determined that it did not happen in their care, but in the parking lot of my work. Rich, the owner still said he would take care of the damage if there was any doubt in my mind. I have full coverage insurance with no deductible, so there was no need, but this is what I mean about ABOVE and BEYOND. They will pick up the car, or drop it off, or drop you off after you bring your car in. Michael behind the desk is a gentleman and courteous and genuine. Pros - Everyone there knows exactly what they are doing. Tight crew, very honest, work with you best they can. Cons - sure to find every problem (this might be a pro, but often I end up finding out too much about my car), a little pricey, but I believe this truly is a case of, "you get what you pay for," not like the dealer where you, "pay and pay some more." I've taken my 2001 BMW to Orion for the last few years (ever since moving back to Michigan). They're great people, friendly and personable and always going the extra mile to help. Even with a follow up phone call a few days after anything major just to make sure everything is good. I needed to put a new spare tire on a rim (thanks Michigan potholes!) so I could get out of town to visit my failing 91-year old mother. I was told by a couple other places (big chain tire stores - no names but it begins with a "B" and ends with an "E" and rhymes with "fell") that I would have to wait for 7 hours to get this simple, easy job taken care of. Sick mother apparently didn't matter to them. I don't know why I didn't call Orion to begin with. They realized it would only take a few minutes and got me in right away. Fifteen minutes later, I was back on the road and headed out of town. Much appreciated! read more

I went in because a friend referred them, that's the first hint that somewhere's good is if you hear from someone else. i went in because i had to replace my taillight, it's some stupid design where you had to pull off the bumper and my dealership estimated would cost $150...which is ridiculous...considering the part already cost me $90...anyways, i called Orion and they quoted me $50 and that was the final price. the owner was a really chill guy who seems to care about the work he does which is sometimes lost in today's society. I had an alternator installed in Kalamazoo that began overcharging 4 months later, which was still under warranty. To avoid driving back to Kalamazoo the people at Orion Automotive offered to fulfill the warranty here in Ann Arbor. They mentioned it was the first time they have done a part replacement which was under warranty, so it took many calls to the manufacturer to figure out how to handle it, as the original part was replaced by a different shop. They very prompt and kept me updated through the whole process. They did a very thorough inspection of the entire vehicle, and noticed issues that other shops hadn't noticed before. They also didn't push to fix these issues, they simply pointed them out for my knowledge which I highly appreciated. As for the alternator, it was discovered the plug is what was causing it to overcharge, not the alternator itself so it in turn was not under warranty. Because of this I will have to return to the shop in Kalamazoo and have them take care of it. They put everything back together and didn't charge me a dime. They were very friendly throughout this whole process, even though it took up so much of their time. I will definitely be coming back to this shop for any future repairs, and recommending them to all my family and friends. After the bad repair jobs I have had in the past, I'm glad I finally found a reputable and honest shop that really knows what they are doing. Highly recommended! read more

It was what you don't want to happen...One morning when the wind chill was -30F, I was getting ready to leave town for the weekend with four other people car pooling with me in my 2000 Toyota Sienna to a workshop 3.5 hours away when my brakes seemed to be stuck on. The car was dragging as if I had my parking brake on (but I didn't) and the brake light was illuminated. Uh oh. I pulled into Orion and Michael reassured me that, given my situation, they would make room for me in their full schedule and get me on the road if possible at my target departure time of 2 o'clock. When I left, they offered me a ride home. They could have told me anything. "You need a brake job," "Your car's transmission is shot"...anything. I would have had to believe them unless I wanted to pay have it towed elsewhere for a second opinion. What I heard instead was, "We checked everything out and your brakes are fine. We think it's likely that your cold automatic transmission fluid wasn't warm enough to put the car in anything but 1st gear. The brake light can't be totally explained, but the brakes are fine. We checked it over for travel, topped off fluids and everything looks normal. You're good to go! Just let it warm up a bit before putting it in gear next time." "What a relief! What do I owe you?" I said to Michael. "Nothing," he replied, "Just come back when you need your next oil change in about 850 miles." The service at Orion is consistently good. I will keep coming back, confident that they will help me keep my car on the road as long as it's reasonable to do so. read more

My Car: 2001 Audi TT Quattro My Problem: Backfiring, Sluggish Acceleration, Questionable Suspension Feeling My Experience with orion: I found Orion through a Bing search "Audi Repair Shops"... I called them at the first minute their shop opened, they answered, they were friendly and helpful... I scheduled an "appointment", yet could drop it off anytime early, they have a dropbox... THE COOLEST THING... They email a link that shows ALL the information you need about what is going on with your vehicle... They take pictures and notes of what you told them and what they find and upload it to this page as they work on it... Pricing of parts and labor are shared... You can publish on the page if you want to contact them without calling... They found things I had not expected, yet needed addressing CLEARLY as could be seen from the pictures they shared... (Axle issues) They found sensors that needed replacing... Hoses with leaks.. And other stuff.. They gave my car a full out professional inspection (Like the one you expect from an overpriced dealership)... I go in to get the car... They WANT to talk about my car and it's issues... I asked how the spark plugs looked when they removed them and... They bring out the mechanic from the back of the shop to talk to me! (With my old spark plugs and other stuff they removed) He gives me tons of great advice specific to my car... He tells me things I should look out for in the future... He tells me he WANTS to know how much better my car is running and I believe it! It was WASHED! Such a simple thing, but a pleasant surprise. It runs better than when I bought it 4 years ago, in what would be considered mint condition. There are many simple things these guys do that show JUST how much they have pride in their profession... Was referred to Orion last week for a water leak issue on my 2009 Jetta Wagon. While I did not have the necessary time to get the issue solved, the people at Orion took apart the back end of the car looking for the issue. When it was determined that there was not enough time to solve the problem I was referred to a shop in Chicago (where I live) for the work. I was not charged for the time that the Orion team put in given the issue was not resolved. These are honest folks and I would gladly come back to Orion in the future. read more
