Great food, portions could be better for the price. They rush you in and out but watching them cook your food on the open grill is still quite the experience don't order the waygu. Just stick with steak if you want red meat. The waygu is tough and sliced so thin it ruins the meat. I've been here twice and its mostly for the experience and the performance. read more

I was excited about this place because it was close to our hotel, The Metcalfe Hotel. It was such a disappointment. It was the worst teppanyaki I've ever had. First off it's in the basement and it was 100 degrees. The place was super old. Second, they had an extensive alcohol list, but told us there was no alcohol. Their sushi menu was so limited to a few rolls and sashimi. The service was also so slow. The food was worse. My daughter's spicy salmon roll was warm and falling apart. The roll was so loose and shouldn't be warm. The rest of the food was bad too. There was no soup, only salad. The chef did no tricks at all. Crazy enough the food was bland. At other places, you have to tell them to stop with the shakers!! They also did not have or make fried rice. The sauces were even so bland. One sesame and one "ginger." There was no fresh ginger in it. The steak and lobster plus veggies were cooked nicely, but again bland. I follow a ketogenic lifestyle and was excited to try another teppanyaki place. Japanese Village (170 Laurier Avenue West, Ottawa) Since the 1980's, I have eaten at Japanese Village countless times. Some time ago, I went to Japanese Village with my family to celebrate a special occasion. There were two other small groups of people sitting at my table. One couple, a male and female, were obnoxious and used obscene language (swearing constantly and using the f... word). The other group, at my table, wasn't interested in being even slightly friendly or in any way socializing. They were unjustifiably rude to everyone else and acted aloof. While the food was fairly good (decent) our server was all business-like, unsociable, rushed the meal and afterwards while handing out the bills aggressively said to us, "I don't make any money doing this. Don't forget the gratuity." Also, being a downtown location, it was difficult to find a good parking spot within a reasonable walking distance of the restaurant. Japanese Village has lost its flair and the restaurant is totally outdated and has become rundown. Possibly from being located underground the air quality was poor: way too hot and with no air at all to breath. I remember years ago, when Japanese Village had excellent food and their chef put on a sizzling and entertaining show, while preparing the meals in front of their customers. Back then, the atmosphere in this restaurant was just amazing: energetic, fun and lively. My experience was such a let down that we will never go back to the Japanese Village. I gave it one-star because the food was only decent, but really expensive, the restaurant interior dingy and the table service far less than what I would consider is normally acceptable. My one-star rating in no way reflects the outrageously inappropriate behaviour of the other unknown people who were seated at my table. read more

A fun place to go for lunch. Who doesn't like someone cooking their food in front of them? I always get the filet mignon. It is tasty! Served with rice, zucchini, onions and bean sprouts with ginger and sesame sauce. The lunch comes with a choice of soup or salad. I have never been to dinner but hear it comes with more food. Service is plain and prompt. It is possible to get out of there in under an hour. My friends and I enjoy meeting up for lunch here and have done so for years! read more

This restaurant is far from the better ones that I have visited. Food prices on their menu are about 50% more than indicated on their website menu. Their response to this was that they cannot change the website prices because they do not know how. We had a party of 12 and waited at least 30 minutes before they came to take our orders. Many other parties that arrived after us were served as soon as they arrived. The food was OK, however they did not offer to cook fried rice, they brought out bowels of white rice for each person. Every other hibachi restaurant I have visited offers the option. Chef was an older fellow and did not provide much of a show. No volcano, no eggs, not much entertainment. Chicken was way over cooked but shrimp was OK. Over all this experience was only worth two stars. Last time I visit the Japanese Village. read more

A came here with a group of picky eaters, and I wasn't sure how well this place would go over, but because there's both a sushi bar and Japanese teppanyaki grill, I didn't think it would be too difficult for them to find something they would eat. The teppanyaki section was filled with large groups, mostly business people. We ordered a couple orders of tempura, which came with both shrimp and vegetables. Each order was over $6, which I found a little high for an appetizer that consisted mostly of deep-fried vegetables, and they were pretty standard in crispiness and taste. Some people at the table ordered grilled chicken and vegetable dishes, which they prepared in right in front of us. They even made a little onion tower and set it on fire, and tossed some small pieces of chicken on our plates. The man had fantastic aim and we were quite impressed! It was my first time at a teppanyaki grill, so I was really entertained and enjoyed it very much. We went during the winter, so the heat of the flame was nice for me, but a few others at the table were sweating up quite a storm. I was more in the mood for sushi, so I ordered the Sashimi Dinner. They didn't specify how many pieces there were, and there was supposed to be a "wide variety" of fish and seafood, as well as some rice on the side. Though it was good and fresh, I didn't find there to be a wide variety at all, and, frankly, I was still very hungry after and didn't think the $32 was at all worth it. I also ordered some hot green tea, a pina colada, and some green tea ice cream for dessert. They were all good, nothing special. Was not too impressed. Went to eat here for my sisters birthday, and I don't think I'll ever come back. There were five of us that came out for dinner. We only had one chef cooking. After we had placed our orders, it took him quite some time to come to our table. The miso soup is horrible. It literally just tasted like water with no type of base/broth, and someone just threw in some tofu last minute. The food took FOREVER to cook! Literally had to wait maybe 40 minutes for him to finish all five of our food. I had brought my DSLR with me so I was taking pictures of the food. The chef kept asking me to take pictures of him. Also, he made lots of dirty jokes and even made a stick figure of a man with the vegetables, with a big cucumber between his legs. I don't know if he was trying to make me laugh or he was just being perverted. Yes.... it was awkward. The food was really salty! Not good but not horrible either. None of the dishes impressed me (I tried a bit of everyone's). I ordered the salmon dish with veggies and rice. My sister ordered a sushi plate, I can't remember what it was called, but it was a sampler plate (check out the photos I uploaded to see it). It's crazy expensive, did not taste good. Not worth your money at all. The presentation was pretty cool though, and the plating was aesthetically pleasing. Bottom line is the food is worse than it looks. 30 years ago the Japanese village was THE place to go so I was excited when it was picked for a recent family reunion dec 23. I was sadly disappointed! I ordered their most expensive meal of filet minion and lobster tail complete with yaki yaki shrimp, rice, seasonal vegetables. The lobster tails were rubbery, over cooked as was the steak Cooked until black. Everything was cooked with a shower of soya sauce. it was awful and the chef seemed not to know what he was doing. This foodie will never go back. They also did not renew their liquor licence this year so something tells me the future of this restaurant looks bleak. read more

This is by far my favorite restaurant in Ottawa. I was taken here in college with a few girlfriends. They raved about the sesame sauce, and they were right! In addition to the great food, the chefs are very entertaining. I didn't catch the name of the one who has cooked for me a few times, but he really knows his stuff about any kind of topic. Certainly can adapt to any kind of person in front of him. I'm not a huge shrimp eater, but the shrimp they serve as a course when you pick the 4 course meal (It ranges from $18-$26 and comes with salad, soup, shrimp, and the main meal consisting of anything from Teriyaki Chicken, to Filet Mignon) is incredible!. The Sesame Sauce is a huge reason I come back. I put it on my rice, my veggies and meat. If I could eat it from the container and not look crazy, I would. They also sell it to take home!- so dangerous. I have taken everyone here, and it has been a hit everytime. Its entertaining, unique to Ottawa, and very tasty. I was very impressed by the service and food! Had such a good time watching the cook, not to mention he was hilarious great evening entertainment. He was cracking up jokes, was very funny and talkative... my friend and I believe that peoples evenings may depend on how the chef interacts with you. Reviewing Japanese village is a bit tricky as there are some very strong points and some glaring weaknesses, however overall it is a place I would go back to. First the strong points, the food. The steaks are still absolutely amazing, as is the seafood, I had a filet mignon with shrimp, steak was cooked rare and it was so tender it felt like it was melting in my mouth while the shrimp and sesame steak sauce are both amazing. The teppenyaki grill is a great feature and the cooks are either very professional or downright entertaining. Plus they light stuff on fire, which is cool. Now the weak points, the waiter and maitre D service. When we arrived they didn't seem to pay attention to us for a while, despite it not being busy and our group being 7. Eventually we were sat down and it took forever for us to get asked if we wanted drinks. And then after an awfully long time we got one beer and then the waitress said they had to change the keg, which then took another long time to get our beers. At the end they took forever to bring our bills. Despite the dodgy wait staff I still really enjoy the Japanese Village, it is a fun experience, good for a group of between 5 and 8. read more

I came here for my friend's birthday and she had made a reservation for 6 people at 7:30. We got there around 7:15 and no one spoke a word to us until 7:45, they just kept walking by us completely ignoring us! The girls beside us had been waiting since 7 to get their table. Once we finally told someone about our reservation,we sat down to wait and a woman working there went right past us and took 4 people who did not have reservations who had just walked in. We asked her if we were going to be seated as she was walking by and she told us to wait a minute. She came over after seating the other people and said "For 5" so we corrected her saying there were 6 of us. She just walked away and grabbed 5 more people who didn't have a reservation and sat them down. She never apologized for making a mistake and sat us down another 5 minutes later. Our waitress was very friendly. The food was good, I was hoping to get sushi but they didn't have a great selection and it was very expensive for very little sushi. I ended up getting salmon and it was delicious,the chef cooking it was very nice and made very good food that everyone enjoyed. I had cheesecake for dessert and it was the worst cheesecake I have ever had. It was the consistency of Jell-O and it had obviously been frozen for a while and then unfrozen. What would have been a lovely dinner was ruined when the chef cooking looked down my daughters shirt and said "sexy" in front of a table of strangers. So I went to Japanese Village for my 30th birthday. After getting second degree burns on my right hand and three fingers due to the chef accidently splashing burning oil in my direction, I had to argue 15 minutes to get a cheap compensation of half my meal off. Instead of getting an appology from the chef, I got some comment that translated to "get over it you big baby". They also tried to get me to drop the argument by saying that the chef would be the one who has to pay for my meal (or half my meal as it turns out) and poor guy will end up on the street because of it. Love this place , took me a while how to figure out how to order from the menu and not leave hungry but now that i have it down pat i cant get enough. I love that you can buy their sauces and dressings so that you can enjoy them at home but i wish they werent so expensive (the bottleing needs to be brought up a notch before they should think of pricing it as such) and when you leave you always take the smell of the grill home with you so lets hope you arent going anywhere fancy after .. they offer a great meal , fun entertaining chefs and ive never had a bad meal there and ive been there well over 50 times read more

We were looking for a good restaurant and stumbled upon this gem via yelp. The waiter (named Kevin) was fabulous...he seated our table of 14 immediately and started making us feel quite at home. WIth seven kids in our party, we were a handful! We had two major spills which Kevin promtly cleaned up and replaced (virgin shirley temple and beer); along with various refills, requests for forks and chopsticks, cups and spoons! The food was amazing! Ordered filet and scallops, filet and shrimps; and the food was amazing. Garlic and butter makes everything awesome! This is the place my wife and I go to as a special night out. The food is excellent, show fun to watch, and prices very reasonable. Now make sure that you wear clothes you can change quickly if you are going out afterwards, because you will smell like a steak for the evening (cologne as far as I am concerned but to each their own) but this is seriously the only criticism I have. I just had a delicious lunch at this restaurant. However, our table waited a half hour to be served while the rest of our group had ordered, been served, and finished eating. I had to chase down our waitress to get the drinks we ordered and ended up grabbing a pitcher of water for our table myself. At the end of the meal I tipped according to the service we received. The waitress came back and said that because we were a large group a 15% gratuity was usually required. Poor service, poor manners. Awful experience. Went there recently based on a special posted on their website, filet and lobster for $36. Regular $40. Asked for the Shogun special and they said ok. Food was prepared, ate, and bill came. Not only did the manager not honor the Shogun special we ordered, they charged us full price for it. When asked why the $36 special wasnt applied they claimed no affiliation to the website!? The site has all their company info!! If someone is running a shill site they should go try to shut it down. Instead they brushed it off like it wasnt a big deal and the regular prices stand. If you go there and order Shogun special, confirm the price up front. Waitress was cute and nice. We go to Japanese village often because it was our favorite restaurant. But the last time we didn't like at all. The prices went up they don't give soup anymore. The salad is smaller and the sauce were still good but very liquidy. (Didn't stick on the food)The steak was full of nerves. Went here with some friends and family recently. I had been before and enjoyed my time. A few changes have been implemented since last time that left me a little confused. They no longer offer a soup option which I had last time. So I skipped the appetizers and went straight for a combination plate as it's the best menu option they had for me. I ordered a chicken and beef combo plate that comes with beans sprouts, shrimp, mushrooms, onion and zucchini drenched in a house made garlic sauce with soy sauce. Of course I don't like mushrooms and I'm allergic to shrimp. Do you think they compensated for this allergy by oh I don't know...maybe offering more chicken and beef...more zucchini instead of mushrooms? No, no they did not. If fact not only did I get half a meal, I had to pay full price. The flames were nice though. Also the bathroom was dingy too. Overpriced and not accommodating which is too bad because the food was good. read more

My wife and I went to Japanese Village on Saturday evening to try out some good quality Japanese restaurant. Although we wanted to try good sushi dinner, they did not have a full menu of sushi. Only a small Hors-d'oeuvre size that comes with only small 6 pieces. (This place is not for Sushi) We ordered MIKADO steak & shrimp ($27 ). The meat was very tough and not really eatable. After fighting with this tough meat we told the waitress the fact. The TEPPANYAKI chef came out soon after to confirm our claim. There was neither aplogies or some kind of good-will gesture for apology, neither from the chef or from the waitress. The full price on the menu was charged on the bill. Naturally, no tip was given. Tough meat is forgiveable as bad luck could happen at times, but the responce from the restaurant is not forgiveable. Certainly, this kind of "Japanese Village" would not exist in Japan. We will never go back to this place. Try it at your own risk. read more
