Myself and 2 other guests went here on a Saturday night. We went early, due to a later commitment. The restaurant does have parking across the street in a small alley which is nice for a downtown place. The restaurant itself is due for a refresh without a doubt. Appears to have been last updated in the '80's. Which leaves it looking worn and shabby. Luckily we weren't there for the decor. We were greeted at the door as we came in and shown to our grill table which was preset for our arrival. We ordered some "exotic" mixed Drinks. Which were tasty but not Over the top delicious. We ordered the seafood combo, chicken and shrimp, and a chicken combo at the tapenyaki grill. Our "host" put on a chef jacket and cooked our food at the grill in front of us without the typical fanfare or show that we were expecting. This was ok with us but some might find it disappointing. The food itself was flavorful and generally properly cooked. The soup starter was supposed to be a chicken broth was tasteless and actually looked like a hot water bath with some mushroom flakes and scallions. We did find that the egg for the fried rice (which was an extra cost) was fried to a crispy rubbery texture but everything else was good with a tasty sauce that was not just soya or teriyaki. The portions were on the smaller side but enough just nothing left to take home. Overall the experience was under whelming for the price. They could easily improve by a refresh and slight changes to amounts of food. Specifically more vegetables, better soup flavor, and larger rice/noodles portions. The protein amounts were plenty even heavy compared to the rest of the portions. Overall ok, not worth a return visit though. read more

It's an okay/fun experience, but not sure I'd go back. The sushi was very good. The rest of the food that was prepared in front of us wasn't bad per se, but it all tasted the same in the soy sauce and teriyaki sauce. We had reservation for right when they opened, but one of the dishes was already not available. With a warm greeting from the hostess "Fay" she asked the kitchen staff if they were able to accommodate us, she returned with a positive yes. Located downtown, parking is limited, there is a small parking lot (alley way) across the restaurant. This seems to be only restaurant on the street. Once inside, there are two seating area, one with a grill and the other section just seating. The restaurant is not fully accessible as there are stairs(leading to the seating & bathroom). Despite the grills on, the restaurant was not too warm at all, the ventilation was great (not much smoke either). The menu consist of sushi,dinner entree featuring different meat pairings. As long as you order 2 more entree they will send the chef to cook at the table. The food itself was tasty, I enjoyed the noodles and chicken teriyaki, the shrimp was our second favourite. The steak was least favourite, it was chewy (texture). The complementary chicken broth soup was rich in flavour. Now, the experience itself varies table to table. Our friends on the other table had a more enjoyable experience with the chef, different tricks etc. Our server was very attentive and kind. They even do a little something extra for birthdays. I am honestly shocked this restaurant doesn't have a higher rating on here. The food was great and the experience was so much fun! I see some reviews on here mention the long wait time to be served. We were a group of six on a Thursday evening and the chef came over after 15minutes of us ordering. And we'd already been served drinks and appetizers. Our server was extremely friendly, accommodating, and attentive to the dietary needs. The portions were generous and had a good balance of noodles, vegetables, and choice of protein (tofu for vegetarian). I recommend all foodies try this restaurant at least for the experience! read more

Me and my team decide to go to this restaurant for dinner. I should have known something when we walked in on a Wednesday during dinner hours and NO ONE was there. We were seated immediately when we walked in and were given the opportunity to review the menu. Upon the waitress return, we order drinks and appetizers. Three of us ordered a glass of plum wine; when she brought back the drinks, the plum wine were all a shot of plum wine. When I inquired about the amount of wine being served, I was told, they only sell shots of plum wine. No problem. We all sent the "shots" back and ordered water. We then ordered food. It was a typical hibachi type restaurant. The chef came out and reviewed the order with each of us. He was very pleasant and the conversation was good, hence the 2 stars; however, that's where it all stops. All of our food was literally soup by the time it got to our plates. We went to Edoko on a very busy weekend night. From the moment we walk in, we are greeted by a warm and welcoming staff. The teppanyaki tables are set up for us. The young chef we had are not only skilled at cooking, but is also entertain and engage with us, making for a memorable and fun experience. As for the food, it is nothing short of exceptional. The menu offers a wide variety of options, chicken and seafood to steak and fillet mignon. The service at the restaurant is outstanding, I can tell they were short-staffed for a busy night, but the service is still attentive and friendly, the staff came to check on our table several times and made sure that our dining experience is perfect from start to finish. The elder waiter/manager is knowledgeable about the menu and always willing to offer recommendations on wine and liquor. My tip is to book in advance and make sure you get a table on the teppanyaki side. The experience is completely different. read more

This Japanese Steak House was good. Possibly a 3 1/2 stars, if only I could grant halves. They do the traditional hot surface cooking in front of you, at seating grouped around the performance, so to speak. I'd say maybe 8 people could sit around this table. The food was good, the "performance" was so-so. We've been here before, and I was glad enough to come back to re-try it. But this particular visit didn't really turn it on for me. it was really only a 2-star overall. Our group was great company, of course! And that is what did it for me! Upon arrival at exactly the time of our reservation, we were left in the lobby for 20 minutes with no staff member coming and giving us an update on when our table would be ready. Finally we were sat down and although we had 8 in our party, two other random people were sat at our table. In a COVID situation, that wasn't appreciated. Finally the chef arrives but he repeatedly mis-timed the cooking. He started out cooking the filet mignon for a couple of people in our party and then let it sit and get cold while he cooked the NY Steaks for other members of our party. After that he let the NY Steaks get cold (and the Filet get colder) while he finished cooking the shrimps for all of us. Oh and the vegetables, which went on the grill first, we're sitting on the grill the entire time. At this point, he still wanted us to wait until he cooked the noodles before he wanted to give us any of our food. However we insisted on getting at least the meat but had to point out that we hadn't any sauces. So we ate the meat cold. Oh and let's not forget how he magically ended up with an extra plate with some meat, shrimp and vegetables. A plate that belonged to no one at our table. So not only did he mess up the cooking, he also messed up on the splitting of the food. I have had Teppanyaki at multiple restaurants in multiple cities and this is by far the worst experience I've had. This was supposed to be the celebration for my best friend achieving a major life's ambition but it was an unmitigated disaster. read more

A great time and at the same time a bit of a let down. Walking into the place you're immediately engaged by the smell of old fried food. Not overpowering but still very present. The place looks good but keep from looking in the cracks and corners as it is dirty...very dirty. The side of the cooking surface had old grease andfood in the cracks as well as pools at the bottom of the cooking table itself. That being said the cook top, table tops and bathrooms were very clean. The staff is super friendly and nice! The young man who was our cook was doing a good job though he was a little short on tricks and banter one would expect from an interactive cooking experience. Our server was super friendly and was amazing with our kids. The manager(?) was this older guy who was pleasant enough but literally came and stood at our table (as well as others) and watched us eat with crossed arms. Kind of creepy if you ask me. The food wasgood but they use a LOT of butter and the meal had an overall heaviness and greasiness to it even though it was very tasty, The chicken and shrimp are great! The salmon is small portions for the price but very tasty. The beef is a nope as it's very very chewy and not tender at all and super greasy. Do not get the beef! Cocktails and sake was very nice and presented well. The price tag is a bit heavy but you pay for the show so....not out of order. Overall some really nice points but some serious misses as well. Nothing surprises me at this Japanese restaurant. Very much like Benihana in the States, Edoko has separate teppan tables, sushi bar, and seating area. The first thing that bothered me about this place is the service. The one waitress there was friendly enough though difficult to understand but it was the food preparation for teppan that took exceptionally long. Once our teppan order was taken, we were left alone for the next 20+ minutes until the teppan chef appears at our range. The "tricks" the teppan chef performed were nothing I haven't seen before. I ordered the teriyaki vegetarian teppan (which includes miso soup, hibachi shrimp, steamed rice, noodles, and salad. The waitress was quick to point out that my veggie dish will not include the hibachi shrimp...that I still don't understand. Why not...is shrimp considered red meat?? But she also said that if I want the hibachi shrimp, she'll charge me for it! WTF?!? And I couldn't believe how much butter and oil the chef used to prepare my dish! Vegetables are not supposed to be oily or heavily buttered and it killed the taste of the fresh veggies. The meal just sat in my stomach like a greasy brick for the next couple of hours. Currently frozen in Ottawa. Ordered beef soba (better for you since it's buckwheat as opposed to white flour udon) and their special tuna house roll... It's a tuna roll with more spicy tuna on top. Both dishes were good. Very fresh. Very flavourful. The soup is a bit saltier than I would normally enjoy. My only issue is the oddness of the green tea. I'm not sure if it's the flavour of the tea or Ottawa's water but it's weird. And the worst part. It costs $1.99. I was asked if I was very hungry after my order. Apparently this is a lot of food. It was a good amount but any decent appetite can polish it off. Eat. Excercise. Eat more. read more

"Can we never go there again?" my wife said to me as we left. "Absolutely!" I agreed. We've been going to Edoko annually for some friends' birthdays for several years now and the place just keeps going downhill. It starts when you first arrive and nobody pays you any attention. Service is slow, there isn't much room on the table (because of the cooking surface) yet plates or bottles are not cleared away, the server is always confused by the orders, the whole Teppanyaki cooking/eating process is intentionally slow but they don't make up for it by being fast in other ways or ensuring you have little appetizers (or even drinks) at all times. It is hard to get drinks and other things to and from the people in the back of the tables --a problem you'd think they'd have figured out how to solve after many years in business-- but no, it's just always awkward. In the past, the "entertainment" portion of the cooking has been pretty lacking, but tonight it hit a new low. Yes, we started with some flames and an onion volcano, but there was no juggling/banging of cooking instruments, no popping of shrimp tails into the hat, no shooting of flaming shrimp into the vegetable goalposts (all as shown on Edoko's promotional video). Nothing. And we had kids of a perfect age to be entertained by Teppanyaki with us, yet there was no real effort beyond just cooking. The food is fine. I mean pour enough salty teriyaki sauce on anything and it's tasty. Similarly for the vegetables: cook them in enough butter then throw on some soy and it's going to be good. But it's "I cooked this in some teriyaki sauce" good, not "I love the subtle interplay of flavours" good. For the high price you pay here, you could choose to go out for a really fancy meal (with a chef with a name) with no entertainment, or you could go to a fine middle-of-the-road restaurant and then go see a movie or some live music. Don't settle for sub-par food and sub-par entertainment. (I don't like writing negative reviews, it does not give me evil pleasure. I'd usually rather just not review a poor restaurant at all. But after so many disappointing visits, at such a high cost, I feel like I've got to say something.) read more

The Asian waitress with orange color hair was HORRIBLE... frowning all through the service as if we were eating for free and begging for food. Don't go to this place unless you want terrible service and MEH tasting food. The only person at this restaurant worth giving any kudos is the chef from Malaysia... he tried to brighten the mood that was spoilt by the rude waitress. I literally had to hold myself back from saying something... heck at one point the snappy asked for the check, grabbed her copy and threw the duplicate on the table and walked away... we thought this could not be possible until we went home and read reviews on Trip Advisor about this restaurant and this rude waitress. Before we left we complained to the white manager or owner of the restaurant... he did not even care when told how bad his waitress was... slamming dishes of food on the table, being snappy and rude like she hated her job and did not want to be there. I went for dinner for a birthday. The chef was busy with another table before coming for us. Our orders were taken. And we waited and chit chatted before the chef arrived at our table. He had to pick up all the ingredients to serve our table. I forgot the order I took but since others took their order, what's left is mine. It was a very impressive show, the food set on fire and everything cooked while you watch. The chef is very kind and easy going. I hope to visit this place again. read more

I love edoko! I have been there a few times and the food is fantastic. It is also my brothers favourite restaurant so we recently went there for his birthday and we were the only ones in the restaurant (it was like -40 out and the roads were slippery and a weeknight) and they never made us feel like we needed to leave. They served us in a timely manner and even after we were done eating we sat and talked for awhile and they never rushed us out, more happy to have us. I just got back from dinner at this place and I had the chicken teriyaki. Extremely horrible food and service. First, the chef isn't even Japanese. Second, food is terribly cooked and pricey. I would have had a much better dinner at Tim Hortons and save $20. I really do not know why the review is so high, I suspect its the owner's friends commenting on this. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this place. I only gave it 1 star because 0 star is not an option. ONLY GO HERE IF YOU WANT TO WASTE YOUR MONEY AND EAT HORRIBLE FOOD. read more

We could have sat in the "regular" area ("same menu" we were assured) but what's the point of that in a teppan steakhouse? Why did we lose our table because someone else was late? Evening ruined! This is not a place for someone scared of germs, it's not the cleanest place lets just say. The food was great. We had reservations for 7:30 they sat us at 8:00 and they started cooking the food at 9:10. There was little kids in this group and they were very hungry. Will I go back probably not. The only thing that is cool about this place is that if you are sitting at the table were they cook in front of you. But you can get this anywhere at a restaurant like this. The service was also bad could not hear a word, and the people at an other table that got there after us the cook was cooking in front of them. It took 45 min for a coke. The chef was amazing but the place wasn't. read more
