Dr. Shatkin the best pulmonologist in the area. I've been going for 10 years. He doesn't overprescribe, takes his time when he talks to me. A great diagnostician .My GP suggested a sleep apnea machine. Dr. Shatkin tested me. He didn't talk me into an expensive machine. I was a mouth breather, He moved to another office, less crowded, giving him more time for his patients. I suffer from bronchitis and asthma , he gets rid of it quickly and efficiently , so that I can get on with my life I come up ftom Florida every winter to make sure I'm ok. In today's world of medicine the office staff is almost as important as the doctor. I don't doubt Dr. Shatkin's medical expertise, but his staff is terrible. They look for ways to put off doing anything. They have a supposed dedicated nurse's line to leave messages. 3 different times, on 3 different issues, and I never got a return call. My last message was "this is critical, I think I need to go to hospital." Even that wasn't enough to get a return call. I am now seeing a different pulmonologist. read more

I went to Dr Shatkin almost 15 years ago when my doctor suggested I go for a sleep study. Dr Shatkin diagnosed me with sleep apnea and since then I have slept well rested , can dream again and no snoring ! I go for routine checkups and bronchitis once in awhile he is an excellent diagnostician Since he left AIM in Fairlawn he has more time for each visit. This is an update to review that I wrote two years ago. Dr. Shatkin is the most understanding, intelligent and helpful doctor ever. I always thought he was a great doctor because I went there with sleep problems and didn't sleep in years before I met him. I have mild sleep apnea and could not get used to sleeping with the CPAP machine. We tried some different masks for it but I'm such a light sleeper that every time I moved I would feel the cord or mask and it would wake me. He told me that my sleep apnea was pretty mild and I didn't really need the machine if I hated it that much. I couldn't believe he was so nice about that. He put me on Ambien and it really worked and I was sleeping pretty well. In March 2020 I had a pretty bad case of covid and had to go to the hospital for a week. He actually came and visited me even though he has nine kids. My brother-in-law is a retired doctor and he said please don't be mad at your doctor if he doesn't visit you in person because you're pretty sick and you're in isolation and he might just have to do a video visit or send the house doctor in to see you and he has a large family. Well, Dr. Shatkin DID come in to visit me when I was at my sickest. HE WALKED IN WITH a HAZMAT SUIT ON. He said, "Dawn I know you can't really see me under here but it's Dr. Shatkin and I came to check on you." If I wasn't on oxygen and struggling so much to breathe I probably would have burst out laughing. I said hi doc and he told me he had to wear that because he is exposed to covid all day and all night. I get that because he's a pulmonologist and everybody on the floor I was on in isolation had covid like me. Valley hospital got me up to isolation pretty quickly because even though the test took days to come back he said that he knew I had covid just by looking at my chest x-ray. When you're that experienced of a doctor you could tell just by looking at things. Sure enough when the test came back it was covid positive and I also had double pneumonia which he also told me I had by looking at the X-ray. I slowly recovered from covid and felt pretty crummy for the next 2 months but the nice part is he told me after getting home from the hospital that I would feel crummy for a while so it didn't shock me when I felt so horrible. That was early on when they were still using hydroxychloroquine and I don't think it really did much for covid. They have better things now. Two weeks later I was having trouble breathing at home and he had his nurse practitioner send a nebulizer machine (overnighted) it to me. I used it twice a day and it really helped a lot. I only had to use it for 2 weeks and then I was breathing well without it. That's another thing.... all his nurses and every one of his staff always gets back to you. After having a bad case of covid it was very hard to sleep at night even with the Ambien because it was really hard to breathe. I asked him if there's any way that we could change my medicine because I started to sleep eating and sleep walking which is pretty common on that medicine. It's not that it never happened before when I was on it, but before covid it didn't happen often and it was getting annoying waking up with food in my room and not remember eating it. Lol. So he switched me to a medicine that is usually used for seizures even though I don't have seizures but it makes you tired. It works great and now I'm sleeping about 5 hours per night. Before I met Dr Shatkin I never got more than an hour and a half sleep. I have chronic insomnia. Even as a teenager I never slept more than 2 hours but when you're younger that's easier to deal with. Every time I didn't feel good during covid he would do televisits with me and always helped me. I don't know when he rested because sometimes he would do a televisit with me later in the evening and you could tell he was at home and had been at the hospital all day. He has a staff working there and a girl named Cindy is always so nice to me that I feel like I'm family when I call up with a problem. Go out of your way to use this doctor. Even when he was tied up in emergency during the worst part of covid and he couldn't see me he sent his partner Dr Gross in to check on me that day. Dr Gross apologized that it was him instead of his partner but that his partner was stuck in emergency. I didn't mind that his partner was seeing me because his partner is a really nice guy and a good doctor too. I feel very safe under Dr. Shatkin's care and you should go out of your way to see this doctor if you have any kind of sleep disorder or breathing problems. read more

The first time I went to see Dr. Shatkin, I left feeling hopeful that he would be able to help me with my extreme sleepiness. He spent a long time with me and was friendly, compassionate and put me at ease. The second appointment he was very different. No eye contact, looked down typing while he rushed through the visit, no compassion. He didn't seem to care about my concerns and acted annoyed that I had so many questions. Next appointment he presented extremely annoyed that I told him I didn't think this was the medication for me. With no eye contact, looking at his typing, he says, fine, I guess well just stick to the other medication (the one I told him I also didn't want 2 appointments ago.) I thought I was in the twilight zone. He made me wonder, "why is this guy mad at me, "is this guy getting kickback from the company that is making this serious medication, why is he so perturbed by my not wanting it?" I asked him if there was anything else we can look into, other testing, blood work etc. He said no, there's really nothing else we can do. Ill see you in a month. I left feeling like I did something wrong to make him angry with me. The reviews were good and he has been in New Jersey publications with positive accolades. I only write reviews when I feel passionate in a good way or a bad way. I hope this helps. read more

In Valley hospital, any time I mentioned Dr. Shatkin's name, I got the same "I know, I know... but he's an OK doctor..." This may be true but to have someone in his care in icu for days with no communication and no returned calls is just unacceptable. Excuses he made were found to be complete garbage as I watched this man throw everyone on his team under the bus rather than just say "I'm sorry." As a stressed family, we were still kind- still were polite in the multiple requests that needed to be made for a call back at any time day or night. Nothing. Doctor, or not, the integrity you show as a human being sizes you up. We were stuck with Dr. Shatkin because our family doctor does not admit patients. At each step through the system we encountered more and more of his colleagues who were reluctant to speak negatively about his behavior, but one could tell this was a story they had all heard far too often. Integrity of who you allow to represent you and take care of your patients matters too. We've left our family physician because of the terrible experience once she tried to defend him. Patients and their families deserve better than him. The medical care is important, no doubt, but it should not be too much to ask for to return a phone call. read more
