McKinley Floors Bathrooms and More - Pro Tip #1: When you need to cut flooring, use a ruler and the proper cutting tools to ensure clean lines.

I recently had laminate flooring installed in my kitchen. I was very happy with the sales person…read morewho came out to write up the estimate. I like the look of the flooring that I ordered. However, the installation left a lot to be desired. The installer seemed very agitated throughout the entire job, and was very vocal with his complaints. It actually made me nervous to listen to him muttering and grunting in the kitchen. He was cutting the planks freehand in the middle of the floor, which lead to some very awkward edging. I also don't think he was thorough enough and pulling up the old carpet, because there are spots where the floor is very uneven. In one space the hill is so noticeable that the laminate bounces because it's not making contact with the floor underneath. In another place, my basement door will not open all the way because the floor is so uneven. I called the store today to ask if they come out to inspect jobs that the installers do. I was told they do hundreds and hundreds of jobs and do not ever inspect any of them. I was also told that the hills and valleys in the floor happen because of the underfloor underneath and should be expected. I I was also told that having to cut doors is very common after installing flooring. I suppose it's not common enough, though, to make that part of the sales pitch when someone comes to evaluate a job. Another thing that I'm having an issue with is the laminate itself. We purchased this brand because we were told it was completely life proof. However when we rolled the refrigerator back in, it left huge gouges. When I asked the man at the store today about why this happened, he said you're supposed to use special equipment to move in refrigerators, so that it does not happen. This is another thing that I think the consumer should be told so that a 2000$ floor doesn't get wrecked moving in the first piece of furniture. I'm afraid to slide back on my kitchen chairs now and dread when the dog tries coming in here. I am not an expert home improver. I have never installed this type of flooring before. I went to McKinley because they are the local experts. However, after my discussion with the man at the store today, I realize you do need to be an expert because they *expect you* to be an expert and to know all of the risks and all of the problems associated with getting your floors done. I honestly think that this job could've turned out better if the installer wasn't so focused on getting to another job afterwards , something that he complained bitterly about not being able to do because the job took so long. I'm sorry that things didn't work out for the installer and that his day didn't go as planned. But I'm also sorry that I ended up with an uneven floor that has streaks down the middle and the most jagged edges I've ever seen in my life. I'll be heading to the home-improvement store today to see if I can purchase some type of new molding to cover the sloppy parts and I will be making arrangements to have my doors cut. On the bright side, the man who came out to do the estimate over-ordered planks and I have more than a full box of laminate flooring sitting in my living room. I'm sure that contributed greatly to the cost of my expensive lumpy kitchen floor. At least I can get someone to pull up the worst spots and take care of the areas the installer was too agitated to do well. My greatest disappointment is that my plans for future improvements now have to go back to the drawing board. I'd planned on recarpeting other rooms and I wanted a bathroom remodel. McKinley Flooring will not be doing those jobs. A sloppy install is one thing. Those issues can be rectified. Follow up "customer service" that comes off as nonchalant, arrogant, and pretty much dismissive is what kills a customer relationship. You can't fix that. Two stars because at least I was happy about the purchase right up until the day the floor arrived.

About an hour goes by I reach out to ask if they were still coming she says yes they got held up at Lowe's and will be there in 10 minutes. 20 minutes go by I start to call to cancel the appointment but saw them pulling in my drive way. The wife came in greeted me & appeared apologetic the husband "handyman" stood behind very stand off & seemingly annoyed. He came in my home I extended my hand and he was reluctant. Brushed it off showed them upstairs to the office and kids bedroom and what I needed done. I asked how long the service would take. Initially we agreed on 2-3 hours now it was 4-5 hours and they we're over an hour late. When I challenged the timeframe, the husband then abruptly blurted out "I don't need this!" Instructed his wife to grab his tools & I followed them out of my home. I felt very uncomfortable with them in my home esp the husband. He seem very unhinged & I smelled alcohol on him as he was leaving. They also left my office a mess. Don't leave ANYTHING to weaver!
