Gave the hotel's free breakfast the go by as it looked just terrible: the towers of children's cereal, the fart muffins wrapped in plastic, etc. So we pushed on to Java Jive. A spacious and well-appointed coffee house that provided a tasty nosh (x2), a hot cup of light blend, the best cortado the Missus has had west of the Mississippi and the prettiest coffee shop bathroom you ever saw. And all for $12.43. An AAR Must Coffee.

Came for breakfast yesterday and had the best quiche ever! Came back today for breakfast and had a banana nut muffin equal to my homemade banana bread. Portions are generous. Coffee drinks are all amazing. Everyone in our party was pleased. Panini are very good. There is WiFi and helpful employees. Order at the counter and pick up food when your buzzer goes off. Great eclectic assortment of comfy couches and regular tables. Friendly, neighborhood atmosphere comfortable for visitors and locals alike. Definitely the place for breakfast or a sweet treat.

A must stop! Absolutely loved this place; exceptional service, fast friendly and served with a warm smile and lovely conversation. Great shopping experience with a little bit for everyone, with pastries and ice cream selections for everyone. Great old building (dry goods store from the 1800's) creates a great atmosphere. Located down the block from the Mark Twain Museum and a quaint downtown shopping district, this place is a must stop location while visiting the historic home of Mark Twain. Check it out, you won't be disappointed!

My first "office" of the day, I spent five hours at a table towards the back of the store with a coffee and a laptop and their Internet. Comfortable, mostly quiet and a good space. I bought a coffee and included a refill. The coffee was excellent. Tempted by a croissant, I managed to stick to my program and just drink the coffee. Great space, friendly folks and as the main coffee shop along the center of Hannibal, quite busy. [Review 19724 overall - 201 in Missouri - 696 of 2023.]

Adorable coffee shop painted with all the fun colors, inside and out. This was our first stop as we drove into town (imagine that), you could tell this store was loved by locals as much as travelers. We picked out a few trinkets while we waited for our coffee order. Great little gift store inside. The cold rainy day could've had us hunkered down inside, but with only a day to explore we sat for a moment in one of the hodgepodge chairs and made a plan. I ordered the Snickers and the Husband ordered the Almond Joy. Warm and delicious. A bit on the sweet side for me as a normal drink, but could always alter it with the nice baristas. The perfect small town coffee shop!

First time visiting Hannibal and I stumbled upon Java Jive and instantly obsessed. The inside was so cozy and filled with trinkets. The menu was awesome for a lunch spot. We tried the soup, sand which and a wrap. They all were so good. On the way out, we got a coffee and pasty which was a homemade pop tart and almond joy iced latte. The service was great and the atmosphere was even better. Now if I return to Hannibal, I know what will be on the list to stop at.

I stopped by here earlier today. It is a super cute location and such a wonderful aesthetic. It really gave me such a good vibe. The outside is super colorful and inside has so many knickknacks and books to buy. They have indoor seating at little cute tables also outdoor seating. And they only have street parking. There is so much stuff to look at inside. They have coffee, ice cream, pastries, soups and sandwiches. I ordered a vanilla iced coffee which was super good. I also ordered a soup of the day which was a cabbage roll soup. I absolutely loved it. They also gave me a little roll and some crackers. I had also ordered one of their apple crumb cream cheese slices. I am not a big fan of apple slices in my desserts but this was so good. The apple crumb on top and the crust of it was so bomb. I will totally be going back to this place. It is going to turn to my go to place while I am here.

Came across this little place while traveling for work, and I will be back! The staff are so kind, and the gooey butter cake ice cream is a MUST try. The chicken salad had a bit of a sweet flavor to it, that I wasn't a huge fan of, but overall it was a great experience. read more

This was a relaxing atmosphere to sit in as the old brick interior wall and the clean couches gives you the moment to take breath after walking around all day in Hannibal. I enjoyed my coffee but my husband did not like the hot chocolate. I found this to be a nice oasis and would have liked to stay a bit longer. Free WIFI. I loved this place! They use local ingredients when possible, have a great and diverse menu, plenty of comfortable seating space--lots of couches and chairs, not just tables, and good coffee. They also have lots of little gift items you can purchase. When I arrived, the line was quite long, but they are very efficient and moved right through. Although you order in the front, the kitchen is in the back, so you are not waiting for those who need food while you order your coffee or ice cream. Service was extremely friendly. I enjoyed a coffee and the vegetarian sandwich. It was loaded and very filling! Watching everyone around me eat their meals I would say portions are hefty, so plan ahead so you can save time for the ice cream! Now if they could figure out a way for some great outside seating--a parklet maybe? read more

Such a cute place. We stopped by on our way from KC to Chicago. I had the cappuccino with salted caramel and my son had the espresso shake w/coffee ice cream. Both were good. Also had their chocolate croissant ... fresh, crispy and tasty. Very friendly. We liked it so much that we stopped there again in on our way back to KC. read more

My favorite coffee shop and cafe! The place is decorated beautifully and it is so cozy! The food is perfect for a quick bite! The lattes and drip coffees are all wonderful! Each staff member I have encountered has been so beyond sweet! The shop even has a section with little miscellaneous gifts and it is the perfect place to look for little gag gifts or just interesting finds. read more

Beautiful decor with lots of seating. Seating is a mixture of couches, living room chairs with coffee tables as well as dining tables and chairs of various sizes. It appears to be a gathering spot for locals as well as a place for those visiting the area. Local art and pottery displayed and on sale. Staff was fast and friendly and the food was delicious. I had the quiche of the day (very good) and my friend had the Pancake Breakfast Sandwich that she described as "unique and delicious." Coffee was decent, We had the drip brew. They do have vegan and vegetarian options. WiFi is available with no password needed. I would definitely return. read more

Good food, cute place in downtown Hannibal. It is a little expensive for what you get to be honest. $50 for 3 people to have 1/2 sandwhiches & 1/2 soup meals is kinda ridiculous if you ask me. Coffee was eh. It was strong but I added 3 shots of vanilla and Carmel and didn't even taste them. They have a few tables outside l. Lots of cute stuff to take home and the inside seating area is big with lots of plug ins and different seating. I will say I LoVe the wrapping paper on the bathroom walls. Very good choice! read more

Nice airy place, good fare from fresh ingredients. Lots of fun stuff to entertain the kids - books, paintings, souvenirs, even a piano. The white bean chicken chili was delicious, salads - fresh. They certainly don't sell a 'Great' cup of coffee, but it's definitely decent and does the trick for a caffeine fix. It was a neat little coffee joint, had all the charm and typical ripoff merchandise available. The price of drinks were reasonable though. This was the only coffee shop we tried in Hannibal, so nothing to compare it to. I'm from coffee snob central of the Pacific Northwest. Still trying to find great beer or coffee around Monroe City or Hannibal. read more

Good coffee and a different chair to sit in each time while watching the view on main street Hannibal or just grabbing a book to enjoy while hanging out. We didn't get a chance to grab a dessert but they looked amazing. If we had more time we would have went back for a treat but we were just passing through and wanted to get some rest while staying at the Garth Mansion Bed & Breakfast, (also a great place to check out). I had the mocha and it seemed to be just the right amount of chocolate and coffee but my wife went for something more sweet and she agreed, it hit the spot. read more

I stopped in there for some coffee and a rest after touring Mark Twain's childhood home. The place is pleasantly filled with old settees and chairs as well as tables for dining. I didn't eat but had a cup of their Java Jive decaf banana nut coffee! It was so good! It tastes like dessert! I ended up paying $.30 for a refill and bought a bag to take home! read more

Rather pricy. The coffee is soooo bad. One of our sandwiches was wonderful, the other 2 were pretty sad. The soup was particularly salty. The salad was delicious and fresh. This was the first time here. The staff was nice, but a little too hipster. I expected better coffee from hipsters, for sure. I don't know that we'd return. I'd just get stuff to make my own sandwich and get gas station coffee. read more

Wow fabulous pastries!! I had the strawberry scone and it was the best scone I have ever had. My husband got the cinnamon twist and it was like a flavorful, moist cinnamon roll stick. Coffees were great also. This little shop is worth going out of your way to try! read more

The chicken salad sandwich was delish! The coffee was wonderful. Although there was Dave's blend and someone else's blend but I didn't know what it was so I didn't try it. Maybe put a label saying was it is? I had to bring it down one star because the place was SO dusty. I get that they have a lot of old furniture and table and I totally enjoyed the vibe but someone needs to be dusting all of that. read more

My husband and I were visiting Hannibal for the weekend and wanted to get takeout cause, COVID. The online ordering system was very easy to use. I made a custom panini with all kinds of randomness on it and the employees made it perfectly. My husband got the turkey bacon ranch salad and loved it. I enjoyed my stop here. It's always great to find a friendly place to grab a coffee when you are new to town. The coffee shop itself is very spacious with a lot of fun stuff to look at. They have some neat antiques. In addition to coffee and pastries, they also have ice cream and a select menu of food. I really enjoyed the Caribbean Black Bean Soup. Pulled off the highway for a caffeine stop between Michigan and Kansas City and expected to settle for c-store coffee, yet was pleasantly surprised to find a coffee shop open after 5pm in this small town. I can't rate the coffee, food or barista skills since I just did espresso shots and bought art. The shop is in an old high ceiling, double wide store front which allows lots of gallery space. Tons of great art and even locally made ceramics for sale. Great vibe - hipness and history. I'll be passing through in 2 months and definitely stop in again. read more

This place is so great! Tons of yummy drink options including sugar free which is always a plus. My mom and sister in law are both off gluten and totally found delicious things to eat there as well. The best part about the place is it's huge and there are tons of nooks and crannies and cozy spots to post up in to read or study or just hang out. There was a group of us and tons of seating to accommodate us all and other groups around as well. Charming little spot in a great old town. read more

Made a random stop on the way from central Missouri back to Chicago area. Nice place. Sandwiches were good but a bit slow to get to the table. No biggie at all, the wait was great. Very comfortable Cozy Cafe atmosphere with sofas plenty of interesting items and artifacts things to buy if you're so inclined wonderful Hannibal pottery abounds. I highly recommend the Huckleberry lemonade it is outstanding coffee is all cell service but they have several varieties all of which are delicious the pastries are also fresh and will paired for your coffees read more

Cute coffee shop in Mark Twain's hometown! Stopped in for an espresso and also purchased locally made chocolates...yummy! The space is impressive; it's quite large with areas set up for your reading, drinking, conversing, and shopping pleasures. There are tables outside for you to enjoy the main street of Hannibal while you are relaxing with your cup of Joe. They also offer free wi-fi! read more

We are a coffee shop, deli, & bakery with a fun gift shop too! Our menu features coffee & espresso drinks, Lotus, smoothies, sandwiches, paninis, & wraps, soups, salads, ice cream, shakes, and a full line of made from scratch pastries, baked goods, cakes and cheesecakes. We are located inside of 2 historic storefronts on Main Street in downtown Hannibal. We have a large dining room to accommodate groups and gatherings of any size!

History

Established in 2000.

Java Jive opened in 2000, but the foundation of the business started over 35 years ago in a small pottery studio. Steve Ayers started making pottery in college in North East Missouri in the late 1970's. He and his wife, Linn, moved the studio to Hannibal in 1984, opening Ayers Pottery on 3rd Street in Downtown Hannibal in 1987. When they wanted to expand their business onto Main Street they wanted to add an aspect that would put his pottery in people's hands, so a coffee shop was a perfect fit for the new gift store, Fresh Ayers, opened 1993. The coffee shop outgrew Fresh Ayers, so they bought the 2 neighboring buildings and opened Java Jive, relocating Fresh Ayers 2 doors over. Since then, Java Jive has become the center of Downtown, it is the place where the locals gather to converse, play music, study, etc. It is also a big draw to all of Hannibal's tourists, who are grateful to find big city coffee in a small town. Their daughter took over Java Jive in 2009 and operates it today.

Meet the Business Owner: Katy W.

My parents opened Java Jive in 2000, which was an expansion of the smaller coffee shop they had at the back of our gift store, Fresh Ayers (opened 1993). I worked at Java Jive all through high school and returned from college to work at Java Jive full time in 2003. I worked my way into a manager's role during that time. In 2009 my parents and I decided it was time for me to take over the business independently. I have operated and owned Java Jive since May 2009.

The shop is conveniently located within walking distance of many of Hannibal's attractions, making it an easy stop while we were exploring the area. If you're spending the day visiting the Mark Twain sites or strolling through downtown, it's well worth adding this to your itinerary. The first thing that struck me was how beautiful the store is. It has an old-fashioned feel that fits perfectly with the historic character of Hannibal. The candy displays inside the shop are attractive. The shop is spotless, and the entire place has a warm, inviting atmosphere that encourages you to slow down and browse the many selections in the cases and on top as well as a lot of the historic memorabilia along the walls. . Since this was our first visit, we weren't familiar with the different chocolates and specialty items they offered. Fortunately, the staff was outstanding. They were friendly, knowledgeable, and extremely patient as they answered our questions and explained the different chocolates. As we were leaving, I noticed a tour group from one of the Mississippi River cruise ships arriving at the store. That immediately told me this was one of the places visitors to Hannibal make a point of experiencing, and after tasting the chocolates, I completely understood why. The chocolates were excellent,. The prices were also very reasonable, especially considering the quality of the products and the exceptional customer service we received. Overall, this was one of our favorite stops in Hannibal. Between the charming atmosphere, outstanding staff, delicious chocolates, and reasonable prices, Chocolaterie Stam is well worth a visit. I would certainly recommend it to fellow travelers looking for a memorable treat while exploring this historic river town. Enjoy!

The shop's owner was able to recommend some of their favorite peach sweet tea and the little chocolates were delicious. We stopped in every day of our long weekend trip to try new flavors. The farm animal ceramics would be a great addition to any kitchen. The magnets in the front were hilarious and provided a comedic chuckle.

They are made fresh daily and they have so many varieties. You'll need to get there early to have the full selection, because the morning rush wipes them out pretty quickly. The dining room is outdated but clean. The parking can be tricky, especially when they are busy. You may have to park next door. Their parking lot is in bad shape with pot holes, puddles, and no clearly marked parking spots. Don't let that keep you from stopping by. It's worth it for the original glazed donut.

If you're in the mood for an overpriced mediocre cup of coffee surrounded by smarmy miserable hick liberals... this is your place. Were it not for the excellent ( expensive ) sandwiches Java Jive would merit only one star. It's fascinating to see small town folk acting like uppity academia elitist New Yorkers though and I love Hannibal so it's worth checking out. read more

Service is THE BEST IN TOWN!!! The food is also VERY good!! Breakfast items such as quiche, biscuits and gravy, breakfast sandwiches and more. Panini, wraps, HUGE salads, and fresh made soup for lunch. Lots of seating in a really cool dining room. read more
