Pros: KINKY REGGAE and a beautiful eastman location with an great accordion player sometimes. Cons: Prices and quality vary greatly. This depends on the server and location. Hot chocolate tastes like swiss miss.There also seems to be people who live at Javas day and night. read more

When you're nearly the only coffee game in town and your name doesn't start with Starbucks, it's no surprise that a little kitsch goes a long way. Good coffee but the line to order merges back into the entryway and condiments bar, causing undue congestion with just a few people. Odd arrangement for such a large space. read more

This was the first place I got to experience a punk show when I was 14 years old. Municipal Waste back when they were all young unheard of whipper-snappers in the beautiful basement. God how I miss the awesomness which was the Rot Punk scene back in the late 90s early 2000's, back when it was spikes, leather and hardcore instead of hippies and vegans. This place is pretty sweet. It's pretty over-priced for what it is and it's always packed so seating has only been available 1 of the half dozen times I've stopped in there. Delicious drinks and pastries I stop in whenever they have vegan pastries with my friends and family. Love the ambient, the decor is perfect no matter how many times I walk in I look at all the art on the wall. I order the Pina colado religiously no matter how cold this Rochester weather gets it's one of my favorites! I would love to come here to study but have never had the chance one day I definitely will. It seems like such a chill place to stop have a drink and work on that overbearing homework which I've seen many people do. I really enjoy this place! Great location, lots of space and room, and service is very kind. The coffee is on par with what I've always had so no complaints there--their smoothies are actually a lot better than I expected. Inside, the place can be a bit dark but isn't the worst thing I've seen--easy enough to get some studying done. Also, the people who often go to Java are nice people who stir up good conversation. I love Java's! It is definetly the best coffee place in Rochester, hand's down. I've been here a few times and have gotten a plethora of different things. My two favorite drinks are by far the Shot in the Dark and the Kinky Reggae. I know that the Kinky Reggae gets high praise so I'll keep it short and say that it's just an amazing drink that you really have to try! The Shot in the Dark is AMAZING. It's hot chocolate and a shot of espresso. Even though it seems like you'd be able to make it at home easily, my results always fall short compared to Java's version of the drink. It's also pretty cheap for how much you get of it and how filling it is. Though I do reccomend the Shot in the Dark, I wouldn't reccomend the Hot Chocolate by itself. I've had better from cafes. I've also eaten lunch here. The sandwiches are fairly pricy but very fresh and tasty. I could tell that the sandwich had not been sitting in the display case and that it was made that day. I got a mozzerella, tomato, and fresh basil sandwich with honey mustard vinaigrette on the side. The vinaigrette was sweet and accented the freshness and exuberance of the sandwich. The interior of Java's is incredible. I love their decor and the paintings and the overall feel of the place. There's also plenty of seating and (I believe) wifi so you can bring your laptop in and work on things. Also, there are two pool tables in the basement that only cost $1 to play. (Although, if you're reading this, Java's staff: Both tables are missing a few balls!) All in all, Java's is definetly my favorite cafe in Rochester. If I lived closer I would come here weekly, for sure, for a Java fix. Check this place out. It's like a little piece of NYC brought to Rochester! read more

Great tea and mixed coffee drinks but really bad coffee. Baristas are sometimes friendly. Sandwiches are the reason to come here though they can be really expensive. Atmosphere is very dark and cozy if you like that - I tend to prefer the sunlight. There are so many coffee bars to chose from in this part of town - this one ranks towards the bottom of the list. read more

I just went to Java's for the 1st time this morning. How fun! The service was quick, although it was very busy, and there were a lot of fun things to look at as I waited for my drink. Maybe I'm biased because I live literally around the corner, but this is my favorite coffee shop in downtown Rochester. The atmosphere is great and there's lots of seating outside. The coffee drinks and cookies are tasty. The only problem I've had is that the barista service can be hit or miss. Sometimes they're perfectly nice and courteous, other times it's like I'm some nuisance they need to get rid of ASAP. I guess it depends on the person manning the counter which experience you get. read more

The coffees are teas here are good, but nothing to write home about. Their sweets (cookies, brownies, pies) also fall into the same category. The atmosphere and location are great, and I'm a fan of the decor. My main gripe concerns their hot chocolate. It is very dissapointing, especially considering the overall caliber of the other offerings. I have seen them make it, and it is essentially store-bought chololate milk which is them warmed. A word of caution: the layout of the place is such that there's a good amount of space "in the wings", but the placement of the counter right in front of and close to the entrance means that area gets extremely congested quite easily. Overall, this is a solid coffee shop. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but I do sometimes stop by when I'm in the area. read more

Love coming to Javas, great atmosphere. No other outdoor patio like it in Rochester. Coming from NYC and San Francisco, this is as close as Rochester has come to a real urban hip feel. If you're from out of town and from a big city, you'll love it. One thing to know is while they have a good sandwich bar and nice treats, they don't tend to rotate the food they offer and it pretty much is always the same. And, if you're gluten intolerant, they don't really have anything by way of pastries or healthy gluten free snacks or if they do, the staff is a bit clueless on this topic. I give them a 4/5 stars, but with other cafes carrying gluten free and seasonal menu items, I'll probably just keep this to my coffee drink hangout. read more

The people are here are so rude. Every time I go in there I keep hoping to find a better solution, but no. There are only three people in there who are nice the rest suck. 1.) they are changing a baby on the counter... I might as well call inspection on them, that is so gross, go to the bathroom. Everyone has an attitude and no one is nice. I hate that this is the only place near Eastman to get coffee, within a walking distance, because the service sucks and I do not want to give them money due to their lack of personality and being nice. One day I am waiting to buy a cookie and this girl sees me and completely ignores me and helps everyone else walking in and then precedes to tell me that I should have just said something, even though what she should have done was apologized. I'm sorry Java's you lost my business and it's sad because I have a lot of friends and customers from my own job who I will tell not to go there due to things being unsanitary and people being rude. Even the owner was rude, tonight was their holiday party and okay I missed their scribbled sign on the door, and instead of being nice and apologizing they all said with sarcastic smiles, we're closed for a holiday party. Javas cafe is the perfect hangout spot when you're in the city of Rochester. It has a great hipster vibe, and their menu is unique compared to most coffee shops, alongside great service! I have spent countless nights at Java's, sitting in the Tea Room window (you know, the one with all the pillows and the tiny brass table?) or when it gets warmer, outside on the sidewalk. There's just such a great energy here; if you hang out a lot, expect to start seeing people you know everywhere. The drinks are spectacular, the lunch menu is great, and the desserts are to die for. Terrapins and Chaplains are my two recommendations, with the Bailey's Irish Cream cake if you're feeling sweet. Grab some quarters and head down the (creepy!) stairs for some games of pool, or just hang out all night and listen to the music and chat with your friends. Great for after a dinner out, before heading out to all the clubs (East & Alexander is maybe 5 blocks away?), to compliment a showing at Eastman or The Little Theatre (right around the corner!), or as the whole of your evening. Yes- excellant coffee. If you bring your own cup, you get a discount. I try to tip when possible.Pan handling outside mostly during summer months, and it does bother east avers trying to get their latte on the their way to work. The police make their rounds during summer nights but these people are slick about the timing. They will wait until night when they can also harass drunk people at the nearby bars- hope that helps. Get a staff member if they won't leave you alone outside- don't try to deal with the pan handlers alone- you don't know what these people are capable of or how they will react- or just tell them you carry credit cards ONLY. You can file a nuisance report with the police dept. - just use your best judgement. The cadillac motel is just down the street- and if you go inside they won't follow you inside because they know they will be thrown out anyhow lol. No complaints where quality of coffee or food is concerned. I would say they have the best selection of rare coffee flavors ex. french toast or mistletoe around christmas which is delicious. Be careful with those peanut butter/chocolate cupcakes- you will find yourself addicted in no time but they will pack on the pounds so in moderation. Last summer when my internet connection was cut off Javas was my only way to do my online course work. The staff were great about it and understanding- and the coffee was affordable- thanks for everything! read more
