I have resurrected this old Yelp account because as a stroke survivor who is living with chronic pain and cannot enjoy the things in live I used to, I have learned to be my own advocate and help others when I can. I have been a patient of this clinic for four years, and I want to start by saying that Dr. Hsu, Albert, Valencia, and many members of the staff have provided 10/10 outstanding care during some of the most difficult periods of my life following my stroke, seizures, and chronic pain. I'm happy to have them as part of my care team. Unfortunately, my recent experience while trying to obtain time-sensitive travel documentation was completely different. With Dr. Hsu out of the office, I sought assistance regarding paperwork required for international travel with my prescribed medication. Instead of guidance, I left the interaction feeling dismissed and spoken to without empathy. When I explained that delays could affect my travel and medical care, I felt my concerns were minimized rather than addressed. This experience was so out of character with the care I have otherwise received at UCLA that I felt it was important to share. I left feeling unheard, scolded rather than helped, and honestly a little numb. The closest comparison I can make is that I felt like the gum stuck to someone's shoe. Something to scrape off and move past as quickly as possible. I have not felt this attacked since my last seizure. It truly felt like a verbal assault on me personally, not a compassionate or caring healthcare worker. I sincerely hope no other patient facing a complicated medical situation walks away feeling the way I did. Excellent medical care requires more than knowledge and credentials. It requires remembering that the person on the other side of the conversation is scared, vulnerable, and asking for help.

I have since learned that Ketamine is a tremendously safe, versatile, and wonderful drug that has been used since the early 1960s, and may be administered at different dosages, in any one of three ways: as an anesthetic (for sedation, like during surgery), as an analgesic (to achieve relief of chronic pain), and as a psychedelic (requiring much lower doses, for mental health support). In my case, ketamine has been instrumental in helping me with all of the following areas of concern: depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, trauma, addiction, suicidal ideation, fatigue, sleep, cognitive performance, mental clarity, and even everyday functionality on a seemingly ordinary human level that so many of us take for granted (until compromise thereof occurs). Within one treatment, ketamine also gently washed away a lifelong fear of needles and IVs, and this annoying obstacle has never returned. I like to say that ketamine (as with most psychedelics) often quite dramatically improves one's capacities: to care for self and others; to move through the world of experience with greater ease, mindfulness, and attention to the present moment; to love more of what is; to gravitate away from the tendency to overcomplicate things, and rather toward a preference for simplicity; and in general to suffer less. It was by way of studying philosophy for 10 years that I discovered meditation and psychedelics. I would never have imagined that a deep immersion in academia would lead me here. Absolutely everyone on the Gateway Clinics team is of the highest caliber. Locally, Zohreh is phenomenal, and creates an inviting atmosphere that makes you want to come in and stay awhile. All of the Nurse Practitioners are phenomenal, and treat their patients with the utmost care, kindness, compassion, respect, and even joy. The founder, Clay, and his wife, Ariane, are both spectacular human beings. I am genuinely impressed with every detail of this practice. The entire organization feels very much like a family, and without doubt they are mission-driven to heal the world, one bodymind at a time. I hope to get some clarity on this soon. They did give me the office manager's info, so I will update. Just frustrating because their website said no co-pay and they asked for all the insurance info ahead of time to confirm. I hope they honor their website's promise or at the very least, change their website to reflect their practices rather than bait and switch. My kid is in so much pain - going to an unnecessary appointment that we can't afford (they recommended 2x/week for at least 6 weeks in our case) is really upsetting to say the least.
