Imagine a pair of 5 gallon plastic buckets, but made small enough in diameter that you can wrap them tightly around your legs from the knee down. Attach a blade to the bottom of each one, and this is exactly what you get when you rent skates there. No leather or fabric of any kind, the entire skate is literally nothing but hard plastic. No flexibility, no control - it's like going out on the ice on stilts. Yes, extremely uncomfortable - but that's not even the worst part. The blades were so dull that I could not get my right skate to bite into the ice. I spent more than an hour using only the left skate for traction, with the right skate sliding crossways the whole time. I even exchanged them, and the second pair was no better. I noticed that anyone doing any decent skating had their own skates, and might very well suffer an injury if they tried skating like that with these rentals. Since this was the rink that once housed the Sundogs (a former CHL hockey team), I was expecting that at least the ice would be in good shape. Disappointed again - any ice within 3 feet of the boards was not smooth at all, and you could see where water had gathered there and frozen in streams. I intend to continue skating, but with my own skates and a full ensemble of protective gear. And with their skating season lasting less than two months, I'll have maybe two weeks to skate by the time I feel I can do it safely. It was a great place to WATCH hockey games, but I don't dare try to skate again on those ridiculous skates they rent.

But for the price Flagstaff charges to use the Aquaplex, it is a wonderful place. There are exercise classes that are run by great teachers. Really feel welcome and all levels seem to enjoy. I do not use the childcare but I do see that it is a great option for parents to have their kids in a safe place and get quality care for their children. I don't know what it cost (I'm sure you can call the Aquaplex and find out the cost) but there are a lot of people that use this service that it usually full when I'm in the place. I think it's great to have the kids in an exercise environment running around and swimming rather than have them looking at a screen. The staff are always friendly and knowledgeable. I find them a real pleasure to interact with. I have been able to ask questions and the staff and managers are quick to help. Parking is abundant and easy to get in and out of the Aquaplex. Be sure to sign in and out of the metal log book at the trail head. Access is from highway 64, at USFS fire road 191. Travel 2 miles to the trailhead and parking area. Parking is well designated with plenty of room. We traveled in a 4wd pickup, but access during dry weather is accessible by passenger car or high clearance SUV. This trail like most others in Arizona is dog friendly, with leashes and good trail manners. We hiked the first week of June and brought 6L/200 ounces of water for us and the pups. At this elevation you'll need it. The summit rewards you with 360 degree views of Snow Bowl, Mt. Kendrick, and the Grand Canyon in the far distance. Well worth the drive from Flagstaff and the view from the top!!

What a blast! We had a great time here this past Wednesday. The park opened up at 1 PM and we…read moreplayed for several hours. It's been a dry winter so all of the "snow" here is made with machines. There are many different tubing slopes and they were SO much fun! Not all of the tubing slopes were open but there was still plenty available and no wait times for us. Our 4 year old had a blast!! There are food trucks available or you can bring in your own food and drinks. Gear is also available for purchase (think gloves, etc). There is one kiddie slope (orange color) for the little ones -- this is the only slope that can be used for double riding in a tube. Overall an amazing experience for us! Would absolutely recommend and be back for more snow fun!
