I've never met him, but this guy is my State Farm Insurance Agent. I get junk mail with his photo on it, so I know I have the right guy! When I moved here back in March, I needed to find a car and apartment insurance company. I asked everyone here in the yelp message boards for their opinion, and the majority picked State Farm, so that's what I went with! I have great coverage, which I can attest to in a minute. It's less expensive that what I had back in Massachusetts. Here in Texas, my car and apartment insurance costs less than what my car insurance alone was back home. And my coverage here is greater. I hadn't given much thought to my insurance since I signed up, but I needed it yesterday. I was in a car accident: A woman ran a stop sign and plowed into my passenger side. I'm ok, she's ok, but I wasn't sure what to do, exactly. I hadn't been in a collision in 17 years, so things have changed since then. But today, it's easy. After calling the police and having tow trucks called, I called the number on my State Farm piece of paper I keep in the car. I eventually got someone who took down all my details, including the Police Report Number the cop gave me. They took good care of me and dealt with me having to talk to the cop at the same time and noise in the background from the tow trucks. There was a repair shop nearby which was prefered by State Farm. That means easier paperwork, really. It's more seamless for me - I don't have to collect forms or go back and forth, etc. My car was towed to the place, they were expecting me and took care of that. My auto insurance covered rental cars during an accident, and there happened to be an Enterprise car rental place just a few doors down. State Farm got me a car there and they were all ready for me too when I arrived. It was all pretty seamless. It's all just paperwork these days and there's little I have to do. I just have to wait for my car to be fixed, really. Thankfully I am not injured so there's no worries there. But I am glad I have State Farm and I'm glad it's all working out. I'll let you know if I come across any issues or hiccups during this time. I'm still a little unclear on what I need to pay out of pocket (if anything) but I'm sure it will all work out. I had my insurance with State Farm for over a decade until I changed because my agent sold her business to someone else. I decided to choose an agent in my neighborhood with whom I could sit down and talk face to face about my two home, auto and boat policies. I chose Jay Lowe of State Farm because his office was two blocks from my house and he assured me that service is his top priority. Unfortunately, things got off to rough start and never really got better. Here's a summary of the issues I had with Jay Lowe and his employees: - From the beginning, Jay's employee (Austin) couldn't set up my account correctly in their computer system, and when he did I discovered they were deducting 10% more than they quoted from my savings account (which I rarely review) instead of from my checking account as I had requested. I had to go their office twice and bring a paper copy of the quote to rectify the situation. They finally fixed the amount being deducted, however they continued drawing payments from my savings account; that never got fixed. - The premium they quoted included a $400 discount for the Class 4 (50 year warranty) steel roof I have on my primary house, a discount I had enjoyed with my previous agents. After I signed the agreement, Austin told me they couldn't honor the discount and basically fabricated a story about how the Texas Insurance Commission wouldn't allow them to offer the discount on my particular roof installation (due to installation date, not brand/model). When I threatened to cancel the policies Jay called to "make things right" and offered to refund half the first year's discount. He showed up at my house an hour later and paid me $200 cash. I later confirmed with a friend who works in the industry that their explanation was just false; it was a State Farm/agency decision not to provide the discount. - Every year my premiums increased by 10-15% even though I made no claims. When I called Jay and asked him why my rates continued to go up he insisted it was because "replacement costs" for housing were increasing even though this was during the recession and commodity and construction prices had plummeted. - In April 2012, after no claims but several premium increases, I decided to move my primary home and vehicles to another agency. I called and spoke to one of Jay's employees and cancelled the policies. Another employee (Oscar) called me back the next day and tried to "persuade" (pressure) me not to cancel the policies. I told him I had already secured new policies and instructed him to cancel the policies. Several months later I noticed they were still deducting the premiums for my cancelled policies from my savings account. I called Jay's office and asked them for a refund but they said they had no record of the cancellation. Fortunately I'm pretty meticulous and I had notes in my file about with whom I had spoken and when. They finally issued a refund in September 2012. - In April 2013 I decided to move my vacation home policy (the last policy I still had with Jay) to another agency after the premium increased by 142%. I called and cancelled the policy. Again, several months later (July 11th) I noticed they were still deducting the premium amount from my savings account, totaling approximately $550 since the cancellation. I called and told them that I had cancelled the policy and requested a refund back to April, and again they said they had no recollection. Eventually Jay's employee (Suzanna) said she would refund the premium back to the cancellation date (April 19th) but when I received the check it was only for the July payment. I called back and at first she said they couldn't provide a refund back to the renewal date, but after speaking with Jay she said that in order to provide a full refund, they needed proof that I had a policy with a new agency on the renewal date. I provided a copy of the policy binder but still didn't receive the refund after several weeks and several calls. Finally Suzanna stopped answering or returning my calls. At that point I contacted State Farm's headquarters and eventually connected with Marly in Agency Relations who was very helpful and intervened on my behalf by talking with Jay and Suzanna. In the end however, Marly said corporate has no control over their agents in this situations, and she couldn't make them refund the premiums. I never received the refund which means basically Jay took money for services he never rendered. Bottom line: there are hundreds of insurance agents in the DFW area and some of them are quite competent. I'd steer clear of the Jay Lowe agency. read more
