This is the famed Rick H.'s dentist. Dr. Cohen is the zen buddhist master of the dental trade. He just replaced my old front teeth veneers with brand new ones. When the new ones came back with a small imperfection, Dr. Cohen said "NO! PERFECTION ONLY!" and sent them right back to the manufacturer. He had the flawed one remade and they look spectacular, if I do say so myself. He is a real pro, has a great personality, and will take great care of you, making sure your teeth come out beautiful and pearly white, not janky. He also has a super dental staff. The hygienists - Carol and Helen - are both very thorough and friendly. The old office was worn out and shabby with wires hanging down from the ceiling and strategically placed duct tape gingerly holding everything together. If you would like to be unwittingly taken advantage of financially while simultaneously receiving some of the worst customer treatment possible (to the point where you will have to contact the Better Business Bureau, The Dental Board of California while also needing to file multiple investiagtions with your insurance provider to resolve your issues) please visit this dentist! DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT sign up for CareCredit when they try and give it to you. It's only going to make you getting reimbursed for unlawful charges 100x more difficult. I go for a routine check up, and also I had some sensitivity on one of my back teeth. After some inspection, Cohen explained that I had some wear from grinding at night and suggested I needed a crown. A week later, when it's time to get the crown, he accidentally BREAKS it before getting it in my mouth. The office wants me to give them the go ahead to reorder everything. I decide I want to figure out my options and request that they do NOT put in a reorder. I got second opinions and many said that if I didn't feel safe or comfortable, it was my right as a customer to go somewhere else. So I called Cohen's office, asked if I could get reimbursed due to his mistake, and be on my merry way. The office refused. Cohen had sent in a list of charges (Single Patient Ledger) into CareCredit to fight me on my dispute that looks like this 11/18/16 - Panoramic Film. $88 11/18/16 - Comp Oral Eval $49 11/18/16 - Bitewings- four films $42 Etc. I call a Dentist friend of mine and explained to him what just happened. Him being way more knowledgeable than me in all things Dentistry, he asks me for my info and looks up my plan. He feels something isn't right and doesn't add up. He tells me to come visit him. I do. In his office, together we look up my Metlife Insurance and my Explanation of Benefits (EOB) There is a pdf and breakdown of all my work done. He shows me that all those charges that Cohen was trying to get paid for....WE'RE ALREADY PAID FOR BY MY INSURANCE. Which makes tons of sense because those things were part of my routine check up. But Cohen billed them all in a lump sum to CareCredit. This is known in their field as "Double Dipping" I even had my friend call on my behalf to explain to CareCredit and they....DIDN'T CARE. They explained again that it wasn't their decision to look into that. All they went off was what the Dentist sends them and what I signed for (I was told to sign for the procedures so I could get the promotion of 0%....sneaky!) Cohen mixed them both together so that I couldn't merely say "I never received the crown" and by adding the regular checkup cleaning amounts to what he sent CareCredit, I couldn't dispute those numbers with CareCredit because they didn't care about whether the numbers came from, as along as they were accurate to the total amount! With that, I head to Dr. Cohen's office. We go into the back and I simply ask him, why are you forcing me to have to pay for this? I show him the documents. Everything. His letters where he left out facts. His charges where he charged Carecredit for something insurance already paid. He has NO answers. "I don't know any of the details, if you want answers you need to talk to the front desk." Elena is there and I ask her what I'm being charged for. She says for the work done. I pull out the papers. She says innocently "Of course Metlife paid for those things....if you have an issue with the billing you need to take it up with Metlife." Absolutely no accountability. At all. I break down all the unlawful charges and demand either a check or receipt of refund to CareCredit. They have absolutely nowhere to go or hide. I receive a receipt showing proof of refund to CareCredit after Elena gets aggressive and sassy with my Girlfriend. In the end they reimburse me the exact thing I had asked for 3 months ago. I wanted to shout. I wanted them to know how much time and energy they had stolen from me along with the attempted thievery of $417.20 It was so interesting how absolutely nobody knew what was going on, yet they were the people in that office sending out counter letters to CareCredit disputing my claim...... when they could have fixed it by just being honest and holding themselves accountable. They saw the receipts. They saw what was already paid. They're not dumb. Even after all that, I have documented this here in hopes that nobody else has to go through this laborious process like I did. If I didn't have a friend who was a dentist, I could have easily been bamboozled out of over four hundred dollars. But my time and energy, I'll never get back This is the short version. This review was 25000 characters long and I had to slim it down to 5000. You have no idea how many letters I had to write, phone calls and faxes I had to send to fix this. Horrible, horrible, horrible! I have been going to dentists since I've had teeth and this is the worst experience I've ever had at a dental office. I've even filed a complaint with my dental insurance, since he's on their "preferred providers" list. Oooh, Yelpers, how could you steer me SO wrong? First, the scheduler: I booked an exam and cleaning with Dr. Cohen. Two hours before the appointment I got a call: "Can you come in earlier? Your appointment time is double-booked." There was no attempt to conciliate and no apologies were made. Next, the office: I'm in a good mood so I humor them; I go in early. I end up waiting... waiting... waiting... until well after my original appointment time. I point this out to the receptionist who acted as though she could barely stand the sight of me. I have never, ever met a dental receptionist with a worse attitude. The chairs are set up in cubicles, providing no patient privacy. I assume that this is so Dr. Cohen can see many patients quickly and not have to bother with things like walking through doors or asking questions. It just made me feel I was at the fast food restaurant of dental practices. Finally (!), the dentist: After an hour and-a-half, Dr. Cohen introduces himself with a limp-wristed shake and roughly pokes around my mouth, recommending really expensive procedures. A crown there, a filling over there and some Invisilign on the bottom. He seems really rushed. I explain that I'd been waiting for a long time and he makes no apologies. His last appointment ran late, he said. "It happens." At this point I was pretty sure I wasn't going to darken his doorstep ever again. "So, someone will do the cleaning now?" I ask. "You didn't make an appointment for a cleaning." "Uh, yes I did. A check-up and cleaning." He changes his story quickly: "Well, we never know what type of work we'll need to do so we don't schedule a cleaning at the same time as a check-up." I pointed out that it would be polite to tell patients of this unheard-of policy when they want to have a cleaning and check-up in the same appointment. I mean, have you ever heard of going to a dentist for a 5-minute check up and then making *another* appointment for a cleaning later? (This might explain why Yelper Mickey S. can never get in.) Apparently, my time isn't as important as Dr. Cohen's. My exam benefit has now been squandered and I'll be paying for a thorough, professional exam from another dentist out of my own pocket. read more

We've been needing to find a new local dentist and saw this office had a special going for new patients. I was going to take my child first, then I would schedule for myself while we were there. We both won't be returning though. I took my kid here for the $99 exam, xrays, and cleaning. My kid was only scheduled for the exam and xrays when we went in (the cleaning was to follow at a later date). The office is easy to get to, but pretty small. Seems they could benefit for a lot more room. It's very cramped inside. The receptionist was nice...sadly she was the most professional person we came in contact with there. One of the dental assistants sounded like they had a nasty nasty cold: wet cough and nose blowing. I get it...people do get sick, but in a dentist office I would never want her working in our mouths (thankfully we didnt have to deal with her)! My kid went back to get the exam and xrays and I was called back about 10 minutes later by a man. He never introduced himself to me but went over the xrays and what work my child needed. He seemed super rushed and didnt seem too thrilled that I was asking lots of questions. With the crazy amount of work I was told was needed I'm going to ask lots of questions. He then said I needed to schedule a cleaning and that he would do it, but he's too busy. This could be taken a few ways...if said more professionally not big deal...but quickly mumbling it, then getting up and scooting out of there it was better left unsaid. The whole time I thought he was one of the dental assistants...came to find out he was the dentist Dr. Cohen. Haha. I wouldnt have guessed by how he acted with me. We went to pay for the appointment and schedule the cleaning...the receptionist offered the cleaning for that day and said they had time to do it right then (???). My child was taken back for the cleaning by a small asian woman (unsure of her name). My kid and the hygentist came out into the waiting room shortly after asking if I was the mom...she then loudly said that she needs to talk to me about "the bad things" in my kid's mouth. This was in front of everyone in the crowded, small waiting room too. This woman was going to go ahead and discuss "the bad things" in front of everyone until I said that we should talk somewhere more private. Hello, HIPAA! I noticed that my kid was trying not to cry so I figured something happened during the cleaning. We followed the hygentist back and she sternly told me about the work that needed to be done (which we were told already by Dr. Cohen), she bad mouthed our orthodontist's work openly, told me that I need to "set money aside quickly" for her dental work (which was going to be a few thousand dollars)...wow, hella unprofessional. She talked to me like I was a small child who had done something wrong. My kid told me later this woman was talking this way during the whole cleaning. Just everything together made for a really bad first impression of the place. We paid our bill for the appointment and left quickly. The staff (aside from the receptionist) we dealt with seemed too rushed, and didnt treat us like we've experienced at other dentist offices. They easily lost us as a potential client. I returned here for the teeth cleaning. As I was driving, I realized that I would be late, so I call the place and let them know. They said they they can either take me when I arrive or change for another date depending on time. Since it was my fault for being late due to traffic, I accepted it gladly and I got there 15 minute late. Once I arrived, they just told me to sit, and got started. Unfortunately 17 minute later (I was very specific about timing) , I was told that I would need to schedule another time to finish cleaning, because they are out of time and I still have more to clean. So they made me an appointment for 2 weeks later. Never mention about additional charge. I have just received from dentist office that my appointment in 2 week will be charged additional $75, and that now I owe them $75 dollar for the first cleaning, total will be $150. I explained to them that I was made to believe that only partial cleaning was done and they only spend 17 minute with me, I doubt that is the "usual" time frame for a full teeth cleaning. The lady explain to me that, additional cleaning is needed because my teeth was "more dirty". Which I do not believe, because we had a exam with the actual doctor in order to schedule the cleaning. The doctor said everything was fine, nothing special is needed and told me to schedule the teething. He never said I needed two part?!? She put me on hold, and then come back to say, that I was late for the first cleaning. I told her that I was late, and called ahead of time, and you guys decided to take me. When I arrived, you guys just sat me down and started with no explanation, worked for 17 minute and decided to make me leave and decide to charge me the full amount for partial service, and ask me to pay additional extra for "finish the cleaning" They never offered to reschedule or explain that my cleaning will be cut short. I am extremely disappointment. Their people are nice, just business ethic in general are very poor. Their promotional exam+cleaning was attractive at first, but if I have to pay $150 for cleaning, that is extremely high. I have paid them the $75 for their partial cleaning and cancel the 2nd cleaning. Did I mention I only saw the doctor for like 3 minute during the exam/ x-ray, someone else work on my cleaning. I will not return again, and I recommend others not to. read more

I was new to the area a few years back and really needed to find a dentist; and quick! I had some previous issues outstanding and it had been some time since my last visit to a dentist. I asked around at work and found out that a few people that I worked with were patients of Dr Cohen, so I thought I would give him a shot. The preliminary visit with Jay (as I now call him) informed me of the obvious work ahead of us. He talked things over with me and indicated what he believed to be the best approach to getting things accomplished. Within weeks, we were getting my teeth fixed. The dental work took a couple of years to complete as I was trying to keep my costs at a reasonable rate. Jay understood this and never pushed me to get anything done that I didn't absolutely need any sooner than I could afford. I have now been going to see him for several years (for upkeep) and cleaning's as well as Carol (the hygienist) and strange though it might sound, it has been a delight! I realized along the way, that what I had been missing in my previous dentists, was a real connection. Sure, Jay is my dentist, but he is also a friendly guy and we talk about work, current events, and about music (he has an affinity for good classic rock). He shared his music list with me!!! Fantastic dentist!! When I first moved to town, I developed an excruciating toothache, and even though I wasn't even his patient, Dr. Cohen squeezed me in for an emergency appointment within the hour. He is very warm and a great dentist. I am a baby when it comes to pain and he makes sure that he loads me up with novacaine so that I can feel nothing before he begins the work. I've been going to Dr. Cohen now for over two years and I highly recommend him! His receptionist Marisa is very friendly, and the dental hygienist is also very good. I can't remember her name, but she's in her 50s. She's thorough, gentle, and very friendly. My one and only gripe, and it's not much of one, is that they always promptly send out a bill before the insurance company has had a chance to pay. So the first billing is a complete waste of paper and postage. I just have to ignore it, because I don't know how much insurance will pay, and wait for the second bill. Also, one time Dr. Cohen was away when I had my teeth cleaned and the other dentist did the routine check afterward. Dr. Rubincheck wasn't very warm and he made me feel like a worm because I don't have perfect teeth. Dr. Cohen's suggestions feel like friendly encouragement, while Rubincheck's suggestions felt like arrogant, disdainful criticism. No doubt he's a fine dentist, but if you don't have beautiful teeth, you'll feel more comfortable with Dr. Cohen. read more

Are you a dental insurance administrator who enjoys bringing your work home with you? If so, then this is the dentist for you. I was a regular here for a few years before I finally got fed up with their billing problems. I'll be the first to admit that my dental insurance sucks. My employer feels that it's worth the $14 or so they save a year by offering us dental insurance that nobody has ever heard of. Fort Dearborn Life. No joke, that's what it's called. Yes, it's dental insurance, not life insurance. I thought the same thing. So here's the problem: I had to keep calling Cohen's people to have them submit, resubmit, and re-resubmit claims to get them paid. My insurance needed proof that Cohen had done a "deep cleaning" to justify the inflated cleaning charges they were billing. Cohen's people never seemed to provide this, so the bill for every subsequent visit got kicked back to me. My favorite part was that Cohen's office had the balls to charge me a late fee while they worked all this out. Besides waiting in their office for 30 minutes past my appointments, I'd have to waste my time on the phone over the next few months trying to fix all this. I know it's shitty insurance, but if you want my money you've got to figure it out. What the hell do I know about submitting claims? Add two stars because the hygienist finally got me in the habit of flossing everyday. I think that helps with my breath, but it's still not in the "minty zone" that I'm looking for. read more

I was reading these reviews right before I went in to go see him, so I guess my experience was to be expected. I showed up and filled out a bunch of paperwork. Dr. Cohen was quick to see me. He was kind, and had previously viewed some xrays I had sent over earlier. When I told him about my recently purchased Ultreo toothbrush, he had no clue what I was talking about. The Ultreo is a well known brush (95 reviews on Amazon.com, 4/5 stars) and has a lot of clinical research behind it, so I was a bit surprised. He was quick to look at my teeth, and deemed that there were two small cavities that needed to be filled. I expected him to drill and fill them right away, but told me to sign up for a dental plan and come back for another appointment. I spent no more than 7 minutes with him. I most definitely won't be going back. Shockingly, another customer had the same exact experience I had and told Dr. Cohen to his face that he was walking out and never coming back while I was waiting for my appointment. He was suppose to have a chipped tooth taken care of, and ended up only spending 5 minutes with Dr. Cohen. He told me that Dr. Cohen was dealing with 3 other customers, and had way too much on his plate due to his "greed". Anyways, I basically felt like this was more of an expensive 5 minute consultation than a real appointment. read more

I've been going to Dr Cohen for several years after he was recommended by my neighbor - I think he's great - super efficient which I like - and never recommends unnecessary treatment - I asked him about whitening and he said that the whitening strips do a good job when he probably could have gotten me to pay for professional whitening. I recently brought my kids in (12&9) and he was super with them - fast and actually recommended less work then the pediatric dentist had suggested saving me $$. I've been Dr Cohen's patient for 10 years. He's GREAT! Lilly the dental hygienist is awesome. I recently took my 6 year old son for 2 fillings and Dr. Cohen is VERY patient (he's not a "pediatric dentist") but I refuse to take my son anywhere else. They are very convenient & VERY PROFESSIONAL. I've noticed that people are complaining about being charged for "missed visits" & "late cancellations". Don't act surprised because you signed the patient registration paperwork & it clearly has the cancelation/late/missed appt policy. I myself work at a doctor office and it's very unprofessional and rude when people miss their visit or show up more late. I have been going to Dr. Cohen for about 8 years, and I plan on going forever. He is not only the nicest dentist I've ever had, he is one of the nicest professionals of any sort I've ever met. He always takes the time to talk to me and answer questions, and he does a great job with all the dental work I've needed. He let me schedule an emergency next-day appointment once when I chipped a tooth a day before I had to leave for a week long vacation. He even gave me good advice on an unrelated medical issue once (better advice than my actual doctor gave me). His staff is courteous, they play I Love Lucy in their waiting room sometimes, and they play good music during procedures. I want no pain, I want a skilled technician who has some heart, and a smart guy on the end of the pliers if it has to go there. It's obvious, in working with my current dentist and my endontist, that a root canal requires referral to a specialist; it shouldn't be attempted in any general dentistry office. If I could give this office a negative 5 rating, I would. And that's just for the receptionist. I never saw the doctor(s) to possibly redeem this rating. I never got past the surly receptionist. And that's putting it kindly. I made an appointment as a new patient for an exam and a cleaning at which time I was told they do the exam and x-rays first, then I would have to make another appointment for the cleaning. A little odd I thought, but okay, I'll go with it. I then had to cancel the appointment due to a funeral that I found about late the night before my appointment. I called at 7am and the answering service told me the receptionist didn't get in until 9 am and took a message. Shortly after 9am the receptionist called me back and I explained to her I had to attend the funeral of a friend that I was just made aware of the night before. She proceeded to reprimand me by telling me I wasn't giving them nearly enough notice. No compassion whatsoever. Against my better judgment, I rescheduled the appointment. At this point I should have reviewed them on Yahoo! and Yelp because I'm sure I would have canceled the new appointment. Fast forward two weeks: I arrive at the office 5 minutes early, figuring I had some paper work to fill out. The receptionist was on the phone, so I signed in and sat down. She got off the phone, but never said a word to me. Not. one. word. Another patient came in and they talked about various topics that had nothing to do with the office or appointments. And still I sat, being completely ignored. Now, I guess I could have walked back up to the front desk and said "Hey, don't I need to fill something out?" But I am the "customer". I am paying for a service, so I expect good customer service skills and professionalism from the people I am giving my business to. I waited for 25 minutes and finally just walked out. I never filled out any paperwork, never saw the doctor nor did I receive any phone call as to why I walked out. I expect to wait when I go see a doctor. That's just the way it is. My complaint doesn't lie with the wait, it's that fact that I was invisible in that office. I have worked for doctors and in the customer service industry. I don't think my expectations of being greeted when I walk into a business are unrealistic. My advice? If you don't have the skills to deal with the public, go find a job that suits you better. I had been looking for a new dentist after my dentist retired and had always seen this dentist close to my work with the intention of possibly having work done on my lunch hour. Needless to say, the work that I needed could not possibly be done on my lunch hour because after my exam, I realized just how much work I needed. Dr. Cohen put together a very manageable treatment plan for me, based on what my budget could afford. I had always been up-to-date on all my cleanings, but due to financial constraints, there were a lot of dental problems/procedures that I had been putting off. Dr. Cohen and his staff never made me feel bad about my situation and have me on the road to a really healthy mouth. Dr. Cohen seems super competent and professional without talking over your head. On a really painful procedure, he actually played a really cool CD that helped me relax. The office can be quite busy at times, but they are really good about letting you know the status on your appointment. I also love the e-mail reminders and the text message reminders of my next appointment. All and all, I would highly recommend this neighborhood business to anyone who was looking for a new dentist. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Cohen for about 8 years now and as far as dentist go I enjoy him. I have had some major work done and he is always patient with me, and always awear about my pain. I do agree with some of the complaints as far as being rushed and some of that staff are annoying but I am not going there to small talk with people. Parking was very convenient. The waiting room had a huge flat screen tv and very good vibe. My scheduled appointment was for 2:00pm and that's exactly when my name was called. I was dreading the double procedure I was in for, a root canal and a molar extraction.... however to my surprise, both were done in under an hour, and I experienced NO PAIN whatsoever. While recently visiting San Francisco, two of my teeth broke causing some immediate pain and a need for a dentist. Asking some friends and relatives, some were patients at Dr. Cohen's office. When I called the office, they said their schedule was completely booked that day but that Dr. Cohen could see me if I could come at closing time, which I did. Dr. Cohen still took his time explaining to me in detail what work would be required and said he would fit me in that week to complete the work. I found Dr. Cohen to be very friendly and knowledgable in his field. I felt very comfortable with him doing this work. Although my vacation took a dental turn, all turned out well with my mouth. He fixed both my teeth and I only wish he was my regular dentist. I would highly recommend Dr. Cohen. read more
