A couple friends and I went to Hillsborough to help some friends move in to their new house Friday. We decided to get something to eat since none of us had eaten all day and went and picked up food at Jay's Chicken Shack. The place was too hot for comfort, bathrooms were dirty and the cashier was rude. The quality of the food rates less than one star. The fries were refried and greasy, the onion rings tasted freezer burnt, and the chicken was old, cold, and dry. We were going to go back and demand a refund since we were only a few blocks away but decided to not waste the gas. This place is a one and done. I first had Jay's Chicken Shack chicken at a Exchange Club of Hillsborough NC dinner meeting and the chicken was EXCELLENT!!! I decided to visit Jay;s chicken Shack and got their 8 piece chicken takeaway, the prices of Chicken were HUGE, nicely breaded and seasoned two pieces of breast, leg, thigh and wings. DELICIOUS for $18, it beats KFC hands down, give Jay's Chicken Shack a try, you will NOT be disappointed! read more

Quaint little restaurant. I ordered two piece chicken dinner with potato salad and macaroni and cheese. It came with a biscuit and my husband ordered a hotdog all the way. I think the two piece dinner was good better than some of your average restaurants, the macaroni and cheese. The consistency was good not too dry and not too wet just needed a little more seasoning added to it. The potato salad I thought was good. Didn't need to change it and the chicken was fried. Well I would've liked a little bit more seasoning in it, but it taste like a home-cooked meal . my husband wasn't impressed with the hot dog, I would come back here again if I'm in the area. read more

Jay's is a neighbourhood chicken shack. There's nothing fast foodie or fancy about it. It's my kinda chicken joint! Now, in all honesty, I have eaten more breakfasts at Jay's than dinners or lunch and I have to say their breakfasts are pretty good. They make a decent, if sometimes just a bit greasy, biscuit. Their fillings, like sausage, bacon and country ham,etc, are always on point and I haven't been disappointed, yet! Their fried chicken is pretty good. I like it. The crust is seasoned well and it is crispy and fried just right, most times. If you're in the neighbourhood, maybe after the farmers market, stop in. We came here to try their fried chicken. The service was friendly and she explained there would be a wait on biscuits so my wife opted for hush puppies. I ordered the 2 piece fried chicken with potato salad and okra. Ambiance was very low key and casual. Well doggies this food was as good as advertised on yelp! Yes it's greasy but we knew that going in and that's also what makes it good! The chicken was fried just right where it sealed in the juices . Ahh succulent! this was. Then the perfect complements of potato salad & fantastic okra hot and fresh was the coup de gras! Sadly, there was only one dessert offered.Nevertheless, the meal as a whole was great . First visit -- we will be back. We both tried the Buffalo chicken sandwich with fries. It was OK. Nothing special. You can pick any toppings you like for the sandwich (all included). Stopped here for a late lunch. There were 3 of us and we each got something different. I got a two piece chicken plate with potato salad and fried okra. The potato salad was very good and the okra was good. I like the crust on the chicken and it was freshly fried for sure, but there was a lot of grease in my plate. One of us got the chicken strips and they were good. Was not impressed at all with the fries. One of us got wings and they were reportedly good. All of us got tea and it was good. Biscuits were homemade for sure. Place was not very clean, we had to wipe our table and chairs / seats before eating. Chicken is what they have the most of but I did see ribs too. A friend and I had lunch at Jay's Chicken Shack this afternoon. The food was delicious and the service was beyond belief! I got two-piece chicken combo, which came with two sides. One of the sides I asked for was fried okra. They gave me fried pickles by mistake. It was fine with me cause I love fried pickles too, but the lady apologized profusely. She even offered to give me an order of fried okra to go!!!! Mistakes are inevitable. How you handle mistakes is what shows your character. The lady was a superstar. Very nice, friendly people work here, and the food was very good. My friend and I can't wait to get back there. Highly recommended. read more

This is the type of Restaurant Anthony Boudain would have loved. Nothing fancy just really good food at reasonable prices. My friend and I had a late lunch there on New Years Eve and it was delicious. Thank the owners and staff for being open and we enjoyed the chicken , collards , biscuits and french fries very much. We have been passing this place for years on the way out of Town and finally decided to stop. My wife went in to place order so I have no info re: decor. We ordered two fried chicken meals which came with cole slaw and a biscuit. we enjoyed the slaw and biscuit but not the chicken. The meat was moist but the breading, which was very light, tasted like it was fried in same fryer as fish. Will not order that again. I was in town for work and did a quick google search and this place caught my attention. I love to support local family owned businesses. We walked into place and it is definitely nothing to write home about. It actually made me a little skeptical.. We ordered at the counter and I ordered the 2 piece combo with Collard Greens and Mac n Cheese. I also wanted to try Onion Rings and Hush Puppies as I am a sucker for both. Well the food was amazing! The chicken was tasty and perfect. The biscuit was outstanding. If you don't like their biscuits, then you ain't from the south. The Hush Puppies and Onion Rings were good. I was disappointed in the Mac N Cheese however. I could not even eat it and I love Mac n Cheese. Overall I was very impressed and will eat there again when I am back it town. Great job Jay! Oh man, this place serves some down home, just like my Grandma made it fried chicken. My family loves to earn our chicken by hiking on Occoneechee Mountain, the highest point in Orange County. This food is disgusting, the grease is ridiculously old. The food is overpriced, overcooked and unseasoned. Ribs definitely will make your stomach turn, barely cooked, barely seasoned. The food here is pretty good, the customer service aspects are a shambles. I walked in at 11 AM, there were 4 customers inside this small, overly warm restaurant. The gentleman in front of me told them he was there to pick up an order he'd called in, was told it was being put together. They took my order - 2 piece Dark Meat Snack, FFs, and a Hot Dog - and eventually they got the cash register sorted out and rang it up - technology can be a bitch, but training can help! There were 4 employees in the cooking area, 3 more at the front, and another came in while I was there. The entire scene was chaotic, everyone was milling around, getting in each others way, telling war stories about last night, and more customers came in, more orders were placed, none had yet been filled. After more than 15 minutes, my order was ready, the only order finished since I arrived - and I have no idea how mine was the first out. As I escaped the heat, noise, and confusion, I noticed that the gentleman with the call in order was still standing there, empty handed and royally pissed! The fried chicken was very nice, great flavor with a nice crusty skin. The hot dog was poorly, hastily assembled, but there was a great taste to it, even as it fell totally apart. The fries had real potential, but they were woefully under cooked and lacked salt. We tried Jay's after having ridden past a bunch of times and hoping to find a local favorite. The folks working were super nice but the food was not great. Our family has been to Jay's @ 100 times for take out or dine-in. If you are doing take-out, check your order b4 leaving the premises. They do make mistakes. Since the lady who used to man the register and help cook too has left - haven't seen her in a couple of months - the wait time is longer and the customer experience has dropped. She had great customer service skills. The lady who took our order last Saturday morning not so much. She didn't care whether we were there or not and even told the other employees working that they should make a stand about working Saturdays. Not what I want to hear when I am a customer sitting in a restaurant. Plus, we had to wait 35 minutes for our order to be done. Jay's food quality is very good. That is the reason for the 4* rating. Ribs are pretty good; fried chicken good most of the time and breakfast home fries are outstanding unless they mess up and double-salt them. read more

I got a huge order from Jay's: dark chicken, burger, fried appetizers (onion rings, double battered fries, pickles), hot wings, and gizzards. Everything was crispy and well seasoned. When I called, they asked how I preferred the gizzards fried, which was really great because I knew they'd be fresh. Hot wings were nice and spicy, and the chicken is juicy. I didn't expect the burger to be so good, so it was a really pleasant surprise :) We got a bunch of good food for under $50. I'll definitely be back! read more

Decided to give this restaurant a second try and I'm so glad that I did. The first time the food was not great and the prices seemed excessive for what I received. After returning I ordered the wings which were recommended to me by a friend. The wings were a little overdone, but the overall flavor was delicious. I also had the onion rings which I would easily place in my own top three of those I've tasted. I will definitely continue to visit and hopefully that first visit was nothing more than a one off. read more

We ordered a 5-piece with fries, biscuits, Cole slaw, and hush puppies; we got two 5-piece orders, fries, cole slaw, and hush puppies--after about a 45-60 minute wait. The chicken is pretty good, same with the slaw and hush puppies, but the fries were underdone. We cooked them more when we got home, which helped a little. Given the wait especially, I think we'll stick with Bo's. read more

On Dec 28 of 2015, I literally put a pin on the map and an event in my calendar for Dec 24 of 2016 to come try this place out. You probs should to :) My parents live down here and when my husband and I come for Christmas every year, he always wants to try new fried chicken places out. 2015 was the year of Dame's (awesome) and some random diner that my mom's friend recommended that was LITERALLY the worst fried chicken on my life. 2016 was Jay's Chicken Shack year! Honestly, the chicken was great - not life changing - but REALLY good. The spices they use in their batter are unlike any other - and I'm not freaking exaggerating. The chicken itself was really well cooked as well! Biscuits were nothing to write home about (but I guess something to write on yelp about lol). But seriously, you really should just try this place out! You're going to get great chicken for a great price and it's not going to be your boring old bojangles around the corner. read more

My family and I have had Jays four times now. We've been for breakfast twice and dinner twice. Every time we have been for dinner it has been ok. It tastes good just over salted a bit and it didn't seem very fresh, like the food had been sitting out. One time for breakfast our food was completely undercooked. My eggs were not edible and the biscuits were still extremely doughy. We threw most of it out. The other time it was good, nothing over the top but still good. We do absolutely LOVE that Jays does fundraisers for the school! That is fantastic! *edited my review because of how sweet and kind the owner is. I love that they truly care about their customers! We give it 2 stars because the fried chicken was alright but man, its called a chicken shack for a reason. They should stick to the chicken and thats it!! We dropped over $40 on this non-worthy mess-the burger its self was ok but the bun was a soggy mess, the fries were over done, seconds from burnt. Chili fries? Ewwww!! Tasted like straight vinegar on top of those over done fries (no chili flavor at all) the fried squash was extra mushy inside. The chicken philly was nothing but a chicken sandwich- but most importantly-WATCH OUT FOR THE BONES!!!! Mac n cheese had no flavor n the biscuits were like rocks with soft centers. And they dont even remember to give you your drinks but they sure charge you for them!!!! read more
