Is it weird to want to review your HVAC contractor? I use yelp for most major life decisions and…read morereally, who shouldn't? So when it came to finding an HVAC contractor who could design a heating and cooling system for my 100-year old house (Happy Birthday, house!! 100 in 2012!), I wasn't going to just trust anyone. I mean, my house is special, quirky, beautiful... and when we moved in, hot as hell in the summer and uncontrollably cold/sweltering in the winter. Some genius prior owner had put the thermostat in front of one of the radiators - brilliant. We had a few HVAC contractors come through the house (5 before we met John) and 4 of them were so overwhelmed by the project, they wouldn't even supply a quote for the work. The one who did supply a quote was kind of creepy. Then we met John Koll. He came over to the house and within minutes, cast an amazing HVAC spell over us. It didn't hurt that his references include the owners of Alterra. Anyway, project number 1: replace the ancient furnace with a super-duper fancy high-efficiency IBC system with an indirect hot water heater. John came, looked around, knew exactly what to do and had his crew do it. He sat down with us and walked us by baby steps through the process. We're first-time homeowners. After renting apartments for over a decade, we were both used to calling someone else and complaining. Usually, with enough complaining, stuff got fixed or not and then we moved out. Nomadic apartment-living is great when you're in your twenties... but I digress. So, John sits down and goes through three different price schemes with different products (all of which he 100% stands behind) and gives you time to think about it. He's not pushy or trying to peddle any specific product other than a good HVAC system. Now we have a warm home that you can actually adjust the temperature in... go radiant heat! The crew was timely, pleasant, professional, tolerated my puppies and cleaned up after themselves. I could not have asked for a better experience. Next up on the agenda is cooling this bad boy and that's a bit more challenging. See, back in 1912, no one knew what the heck air conditioning was... and over the years, different owners have put together some pretty interesting ways to cool this baby. Terrible wall units, a quasi-functional central air unit on the third floor, a whole house fan... High velocity air conditioning (which is what everyone says is the way to go) costs a ridiculous amount of money. John has been creating a cooling schema that will progress in stages and by the end, this old house will be the coolest house on the block (unlike her owners). Will update you after the next project...

We were told by the technician that the owner, Bob, doesn't listen to what the employees say anyway. We eventually got a different company to finish the job, They took one look at the water heater and identified that it HAD been leaking and that they didn't make the parts to fix it anymore. The Office Manager at the second company we used thought that I was joking when I told them the story - then they looked at the review online! Don't use this provider - they are unprofessional, poorly trained, and talk badly about the owner. The owner doesn't appear to care either - would give them a (-2) star rating if I could. Oh - the owner won't call you back ever. If this place is recommended, run the other way screaming. Dump the home warranty company too if they recommend these guys.

WOW!! RUN!! Don't walk!! These guys are AMAZING!! So.... I live in a condo complex that…read morewas built in 1988. The owners were instructed that we needed to have our dryer vents brought "up to code" as most of the vents had become disconnected... and were venting somewhere inside the building.. but not venting out side the the building. Argh... a challenging task for sure. I called several companies to come out and give me an estimate. Every single company I called said "I will find your disconnect, but you are responsible for replacing your drywall, painting, etc" Not good news. Then... Ducts On Call came out... and they spent 4 hours researching... trying to figure out which vent was mine that exited out of the back of the building. But since every single dryer vent was disconnected in the interior of the building... there was NO way they could figure it out without tearing up the ceiling in mine, and my neighbors units. I was SO frustrated. But then Nick suggested we put in a new vent duct from my unit straight out the front of the building. It was my only option. He said we would need to schedule a time in the future... but I told him I needed it done in the next 3 weeks. He said... "I will make this happen for you" Well for starters... he DID NOT CHARGE ME for the 4 hours he spent trying to figure out which vent was mine. HE SAID... "I didn't solve the problem.. so I will not charge you" What?? 4 hours of your time for free?? Moving forward..... Nick and his crew came back 2 weeks later to install my NEW, up to code dryer duct on a new path out the front of my condo. I was SO not looking forward to having my ceiling ripped open to have the duct installed. So the day had come. Nick arrived before his scheduled time and he went to to work. I asked him... "How much of my ceiling do you need to open up?" He said... "I'm not opening your ceiling... I'm going to drill a hole in the exterior of your building, and slide the new duct straight back to your dryer connection" I was beside myself! I could go on and on... but let me tell you, this guy is the real deal!! He is incredibly gifted at what he does... super friendly... hard worker, and gets the shit done!! For what I thought was going to be a day of HELL... turned out to be a day of BLISS. I CAN NOT recommend this company any more than I do!! They were AMAZING... and the job was smooth, and quick, and so much easier than I dreamed it would be. Let me state again... that I called several companies to get the job done.... and these guys were one of the newer companies I called.... but I hit the jackpot!! Trust me!! If your need Duct work done... these guys were stellar from start to finish. And no... I'm not related to them... I'm not his high school friend... and I knew nothing about them, but I took a chance... and boy... am I glad I did. Amazing! THESE GUYS KICK ASS!! Give them a try!! Thank You Ducts On Call!!
