They remedied the situation so turned my 1 star review into a 5 star review. I was very happy with everything.

We called JB after a long, exhausting, and ultimately unsuccessful experience trying to get our windows replaced by another contractor (who shall remain unnamed). Our neighbors had used JB successfully, and the city of Boston's historic-approval folks told us that, while they can't recommend any window contractors, they've had nothing but good experiences with JB. The whole process was quick, transparent, and professional. They had the windows made in Italy, and--after we gave them the exact shade of paint that our bedroom was painted in--they took care of the rest. It happened that, on the day when the installation was going to happen, we were going to be out of town, so we left them a key in a lockbox. They took care of everything. They sent us photos so that we could see what they'd done while we were gone. There was a bit of confusion: after they left, we noticed that we no longer had screens in our windows (which we'd obviously want during the summer). Without needing to say another word, they came by and spent the morning installing the screens. The windows are beautiful, and are a huge improvement over the rotted ones we had there before. Since our apartment faces onto a historic park, we needed city approvals before the installation could go ahead; they handled all of this for us. Full disclosure: to replace two historic windows, tear out the old ones, etc., we paid $12,755.55 (of which about $9000 was parts; the remainder was labor). It was a lot of money, but it was totally worth it. What I've discovered by working with multiple contractors from multiple trades is that you get what you pay for. You could probably find a cheaper contractor, but you're unlikely to find a better one. Specifically: if you're in the South End of Boston, JB works here all the time. They know the neighborhood and everyone loves them. So do we. read more

I showed up on a Friday, half an hour before closing, and Jackie greeted me like I was the first costumer of the day. I came in with no experience buying a door or sidelights and didn't have a clue on the lingo to describe 'divided light' preferences - 'profiles' or 'SDLs'. She listened carefully to my preferences and gave me a crash course in the most respectful and patient way possible (again half an hour before closing!). With each subsequent call for clarification, we quickly got closer and closer to what I wanted and Jackie was always mindful of working within my budget for the best possible value. omg it's impossible to get someone on the phone with this company because of the way their phone menus work. I really felt like they weren't interested in my business. I bought lots of windows there in the past and called Bruce in Service several times and he never returned my calls. They don't do service any more for windows out of warranty anymore so don't bother. It's such a shame that there seems to be very little real customer service anywhere anymore. First it took many calls and emails and follow ups to get an appt. Keystone cops internally as is how it appeared. When their "technician" finally came out he was more interested in random chit chat then talking about the project. After a few weeks they finally got back to us and said they weren't interested in the job. It was small : two doors and two custom windows plus installation. This place comes recommended for a reason. The Chelsea location has a wonderful showroom where you can see and try out most of the windows. You'll get paired with one salesman and we found ours to be really knowledgeable and a good listener and communicator. He gave us a few thick booklets to take home and look through. It took a whole for us to determine exactly the window given there are so many choices of style, material, color, inside and outside, and he was very patient with us. We ordered the windows and then a few months later ordered more from them to replace rotted windows in our garage. It will be a wait for manufacture and shipping to you but all the windows we ordered have arrived and some are already successfully installed. The quality is great. One suggestion is to use Pinterest to see JD Sash windows and supplement your process because they have so many styles and the showroom can't possibly feature them all. We were originally going with one window and then on Pinterest found another better suited to our situation. read more

If I could give them no stars I absolutely would. It started off by the fact that they essentially have no hours. So we've had to make special trips that are less than convenient. Unless you don't work, or are a contractor doing this for your job it isn't worth it. The next step was that we asked for a particular style of door. We wanted it to match the door paneling on all our other doors. Even though we asked directly for that style of doors the quotes we ended up with were for the wrong doors. Two weeks later and several emails and calls till we could finally work that out. Then there was the pickup. Everything should have fit in our car. So we make a special trip, but for some reason, though we didn't ask for this at all, they decided to put the frame together. This meant that it wouldn't fit in our car and likely would not fit in our stairs. The delivery. So they said no problem they would deliver it and *get it up the stairs.* Fine, delivery scheduled. When the guy comes he is intent on leaving everything at the front door. He tells me that he is, "not allowed to go on the property." So I'm now stuck with doors at my front door that I'll have to move by myself. That was NOT the agreement we made for the delivery nor was it our understanding. The frame. I haven't moved the frame in the house, but I can almost guarantee it won't fit into any door that we own let alone up stairs. Why did they put the frame together? I don't know. Bottom line, don't use them. It is not worth any of this trouble. From moment one when we got the wrong quotes we should have realized this was going to go down fast. I will reiterate if I could give them 0 stars I would. Not worth the time the hassle or any of it. Any other place would have been better, literally any other place. read more

About 10 years ago ordered about $30K of Marvin windows through them with removable grills (biggest mistake ever). They have never fit. They finally had to send someone out to custom make them. They are now starting to fall out again...and shatter. JB Sash will not support. Very disappointing. Won't go to them again. read more

Don't waste your time. Like other reviewers, we had someone come to the house to measure and discuss different products (up to 6-7 windows in all). We were told we'd receive a quote within 5-6 days. That was almost one month ago. After several attempts (calls, texts) to get the quote, we've decided to move on, as this is not a good sign of future service and responsiveness. With this type of "customer service" I'm really not sure how they stay in business. read more

We did a very large window project, and JB Sash was great to work with. Windows are expensive, and that stinks. But Cheryl and the team at JB Sash handled everything, without any headaches. We had them out for an estimate and information session, then got a quote, and nailed the project down. A few weeks later, the installers came and handled everything with aplomb. Within a few days, we were (almost) all set.* Jason and Mark both deserve special mention for their expertise, but Ben and Eddie working with them were also friendly and skilled. I've little doubt that everyone JB Sash hires is both well-trained and personable. Following this purchase, I may not need to deal with installing windows again, if I'm lucky. However, I can certainly recommend JB Sash to others! * We had one hiccup, but it was well handled. 1 window out of 33 was incorrectly sized, and needed to be re-ordered. I don't know if that window got screwed up by a typo when ordering, or the factory messed up the fabrication, but it was never our problem to deal with. JB Sash handled replacing it, and a few weeks later, our final window was installed, and the project done. read more

I bought 12 JB Sash Tilt N Seal replacement windows in October 2004. JB Sash installed them in January 2005. Other than the long wait between order and fulfillment, the project went well. The windows have really not held up well. In January of 2012, an upper sash seal failed. I called JB, and they agreed to replace the sash at no charge, though I had to schlep to Chelsea (almost an hour's drive) to pick it up (JB would not ship). I don't remember the date, but it must have been 2015 or 2016 when one of my windows would not stay up. I called JB who said I could buy a repair kit or have a service man come out to fix the window. I paid I think $135 to have the service man come out and show me how to replace the failed plastic sliders in the window. He gave me 5 or 6 extra sliders. I'm glad he did, and I'm glad I learned how to replace the sliders because I have had a continuing series of failures. In August of 2018 I had used up my supply of replacement slider kits, so I ordered a few more. JB charged me for the parts. It's not hard to replace them, but it is a nuisance. I think I've had to replace sliders on all but 2 of the windows. This past fall I noticed 2 more seal failures in upper sashes. On 12/21/20, I called JB Sash to find out my options for replacing the failed windows. The service department line was busy, so I left a voice mail message. A week went buy with no response. I think a voice mail message should be returned the next day, but it was a holiday week, so I gave some extra time. On 12/28/20 I still did not have a return call, so I sent an email to the address on their web site (info@jbsash.com). I asked for a response to my voice mail and reposing my question. I included all the details from my original order. Another week went by without a response, so I searched and found an email address for Rick Bertolami, one of the owners of the business. I forwarded the previous email to RickB@JbSash.com and asked for a response. I mentioned that I was disappointed in the performance of the product but even more disappointed in my inability to get a response. I sent my email to Rick on Tuesday, 1/5/21. It is now Friday morning, and I still have no response from Rick or to either or my other two tries to contact JB Sash. I might as well give up. I don't know what I'll do about my windows, but I don't expect to do business with JB Sash again. I offer my experience as a warning to others who might consider that company. About 13 years, I replaced over 20 windows with Double Hung Wood framed JB Sash windows, LOTS OF MONEY. I say a little over 2 years ago the windows started to have this condensation in the top sash on over half of the replaced windows. I was battling a medical condition and finally got around to having JB Sash come out last fall to look at the windows. I was told the glass is defective. It took well over six months to get the quote. JB Sash wants to charge me the cost of replacement glass plus labor on each window. OH ya, they discontinued this window so they are saying it is not covered under warranty. Hmmm, the GLASS is defective - the glass should have warranty. Now, some of the windows, the bottom sash glass is showing signs of the defective glass. Very FRUSTRATED !! Poor service, awful windows --- read more

We had a great salesperson come to our home and measure for a door. After leaving and submitting an invoice with only a stock door (so we could decide on style and color), the problems began. We emailed the office contact we were given multiple times to obtain color and hardware information. When we did get a response, it was unclear the options and inconsistent information was given. We were frustrated, so we gave up for a couple weeks. When we tried to reengage, we were told they are no longer doing doors. This is inconsistent with their website and phone system. The contact also said they had followed up with us - not true. We're unsure if they are not telling the truth to avoid the work or that they were caught not servicing customers. read more

Some 16 years ago or so, I decided to replace the windows in my very old house, bought in 1995 and built sometime before 1916. Well, that was a doof move, I came to find out. "Always fix old windows," said smarter people than me after it was too late because I already made the doof move. "They''re better and sturdier and" blah blah blah reasons for why my move, as I said, was a doof move. Be that as it may, the doof move included buying replacement windows from JB Sash. Lots of windows. LIke, many thousands of dollars worth of windows. About 30, maybe. Big house. I still have the brochure for the windows I bought. It's nice and glossy. Features cut-aways to show you the high-tech channels your insulated window panes fit into. "Patent pending," the glossy brochure crows. Flash forward 16 years, and these utter crap windows have busted side balances--not surprising, given how flimsy the plastic channels are on these I'm-so-great-I-need-a-patent windows. That means it's a struggle to push them up, and then you have to quickly jam something in the opening to keep them up, or they'll make jam out of your hands. Such a great window to have when you rent to a family with toddlers, wouldn't you say? No, I didn't think so either. Beyond the finger/small child-eating broken balance smash-things aspect, there's also the WTF plastic channel at the top that has warped so you can't, actually, push the upper window half into it. There's a nice, inch-wide gap open to the outside on some of the windows, thanks to this. Like fresh air? Like bats? Like bugs? Boy, does JB Sash have the replacement windows for you! Patent pending! Anyway, I'm working with Greg, the windows expert from Boston Building Materials Co-op. He's helping, doing a little research on repairing the windows, as opposed to replacing them outright, the idea of which hurts me because I'm poor. So Greg writes to JB Sash, to find out about replacement parts for these windows, which, as I might have mentioned, cost me a F LOAD OF CASH lo these 16 years ago. This is the response he got from JB Sash, in entirety, about their super duper patent pending windows: "These windows & parts are no longer available. An all wood version is available but has no adjustable sill insert" Yes, that's right, JB Sash is so busy crafting expensive, Patent! Pending! windows, apparently, that they couldn't afford the time to put a piece of punctuation at the end of their 2nd sentence. Would that punctuation were their most egregious failing. read more

I bought a door, a storm door and two windows from these guys. The first storm was smaller than the door (hello salesman) and returned it for a restocking fee. The door is nice but the salesman pushed a cheaper stock door on me, instead of what I ordered, I should have waited. The window guy they recommended to install was a total freak, the second day he actually brought his child (10?) to help, and asked my newly divorced brother if he had found God. After a year I needed a part and had to bully the salesman to UPS it to me. Not as bad as Dorchester Door And Window, but close. I think if you are a contractor who deals with them a lot they are fine, but the average homeowner cannot expect too much. These guys really are in the replacement window business. read more

JB door and Sash replaced my windows in Back Bay and it has been life changing! They did an amazing job. Handled the landmarks commission approval, matched the interior and exterior paint colors, and the installation was a breeze. They put down plastic to cover my floors and furniture, and cleaned up after themselves, you would never know they were there. I actually threw a party 4 hours after they left and I did not need to clean up after them at all! Essentially all communication via email, and easy to communicate with. They took my apartment to a breezy, apartment that mirrored the outside temperature, to nearly sound-proof. Windows look amazing! Highly recommend. read more

JB Sash and Door won the contract for our building because the local historical society picked their window as the most accurate looking. This decision has caused pain for all the unit owners in our building, I'll give you my pain - First a minor gripe. The windows suck. The mechanism for supporting the open window breaks and they become useless. I arranged to have mine repaired and they are repairing several others around the building because they are failing at a high rate (at my expense of course, but I'd guess they are out of warranty, so fine) Here's the major gripe. First, I had to prepay the full amount. Then I had to schedule a technician to come in months in advance. Finally the magic day arrived, and the tech worked on the window for 3 hours while I sat in the next room quietly working. Then, I came out for lunch and the tech is just gone. I check my window? Now it doesn't open at all. After a few phone calls and emails it is determined that one of the two mechanisms brought to repair the window was defective. They will order a replacement and fix it at no charge to me (good). I ask to reschedule and I hear nothing. Finally the super in my building who is coordinating the repairs across the building tells me they will come two weeks hence (which is today), at 1:30. 1:30 rolls around, nothing. At 3pm I call, email any means of contact. The tech calls me back and says he's not sure if they have the part and they may need to reschedule. Honestly, I totally understand that, but WHY DIDN'T I GET A CALL YESTERDAY. OR TODAY. OR NOT UNTIL I CALLED THEM, 2 HOURS PAST THE WINDOW THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO ARRIVE? I had to make special arrangements with work to be home today, and I disrupted my whole kitchen to give the tech easy access, as well as arranging my family to be out of the house to reduce everyone's COVID risk. So right now, I don't know if or when they will actually make this right. I understand almost all of the problems, what I don't understand is the lack of communication. I'm annoyed as a customer and a resident, and frankly I am drafting a letter to our historical society to ask them to reconsider using this company in the future. read more

I was on the fence originally about replacing the old door but after seeing the new door, I'm very happy I did! I wish they could have painted it before install but that isn't a huge deal. We had the Victorian bowfront windows replaced by JB Sash & Door on our house in the South End. It was a complicated job and they did a terrific job. Cheryl, in the office, worked around our busy international travel schedule. She submitted and got approval for our project from the historical society. The two installers, Mark and Eddie were excellent craftsmen. They also were always prompt and courteous. When the color on one set of windows was off from our paint color they went the extra mile and painted it with our color. They cleaned up every night and the rooms were ready for our use after they left. I would recommend JB Sash and Door without reservations for any complicated (or simple) window replacement. read more

The salesman was fine when we did finally get to talk with him, unfortunately starting with the receptionist (who was extremely rude to everyone that walked in - seemed put off that she had to do her job) as well the amount time we wasted driving in to Chelsea and waiting for service this was one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had. Here are my questions/concerns about JB Sash & (close the) Door (on residential customers) company: - Why do they advertise on TV, it is obvious you do not want to service customers outside of the 617 area code (unless of course it a $ig job). - Their receptionist was really bad; while most people scratched their heads and left we stuck it out and wasted our time. - I called and sent emails with no return correspondence. I sent them a recommendation to have a sign at the door explaining the customer expectations. Which is better than having someone working for you that has no clue of how to engage customers. o Here is some thoughts of a sign: "Residential customers........ Please sign the signup sheet and don't ask the receptionist a question she simply answers the phone. Also if you live outside of 128 and you're not going to send more than $10K, you might as well leave we will never call you back and/or drive to your house and give you our free estimates." "Contractor & Architect customers...... please take a seat we will do our best to get the residential customers out of here as quick as possible and get to your needs." Don't waist your time, suggest do what I did, go to Lowe's and actually get what you want done. read more

DO NOT USE! We are building a new home and placed an order for all of our doors and windows over 8 months ago with JB Sash & Door. We are still missing doors, components required for built in Marvin shades and some shades never arrived. Several of the custom door orders had to be re-done. I have about 20 JB Sash windows in my house. Every year one or two of the balances breaks. (See other reviews.) Called ten times, left polite messages, and can't get anyone to call me back. We went to JB Sash because of their reputation. We needed a new front door and had them measure and provide an estimate. These folks are professional and are excellent craftsmen. They were great on follow up and scheduling and the door was installed perfectly and looks fantastic. In fact, the storm door that was already there, had to be removed and reinstalled. It fits better than before! In the past, I used one of those radio window, door, roofing companies and will never waste my time or money on them again. Disaster! First, I would like to say that the receptionists are very nice, courteous and professional. I had a great conversation with the lady that booked my appointment for the estimate. She provided me a detailed overview of the whole process. That said, I had someone from JB Sash come out for a quote on replacement windows for a condo offer I was negotiating. The selling agent couldn't get us in right away, so the gentleman from JB Sash waited patiently (which is why I am saying 1 star, instead of 0). The person providing the quote was rude and not communicative. Simple questions on the issues, recommended repairs and cost were deflected and not answered. It has been a week and I haven't recieved any of the documents providing sizes, estimates etc that were promised to me by JB Sash. This has made it tough during the negotiation process without documented estimates. We both took time out of our day for the estimates and shows that they do not care about new business or their potential customers. My experience was very bad and would not recommend them. read more

I have to commend Cheryl and her staff at JB Sash. I replaced all my windows in my back bay condo in Boston from across the country in California with the help and professionalism of Cheryl. I did not even get to see the out come of their work until 4 months after installation. I have to say, I was very pleased with the 6 windows that were replaced. The windows had to be custom ordered and built, approved by the Boston historical society and the condo association. This process, however, did take 4 months for the simpler windows and 6 months for the bay window. Quality and craftsmanship are superb. Windows open smoothly and the double panes cut the city noise outside significantly. The installers are neat and non obtrusive according to the tenants. I am very happy with their work. JB Sash made many mistakes with our order and I will not be working with them again. Their showroom looks great and when the final got it right, the product is very high quality, but we had to order some doors three times. JB Sash accepted that the problem was their mistake or their suppliers, but the delays increased our labor costs by hundred's of dollars. In addition they raised the prices by 5%-10% because we ordered 2 weeks later then we had originally discussed. They claimed the supplier raised the prices (probably true), but they gave us no warning about how long the initial price quote was valid. read more

So I go in to inquire about 6 loft size windows. The two individuals at the desk continue talking as though I am disturbing them. The woman finally allows me to interrupt to describe how my windows don't work correctly. She asks me who the manufacturer is and I said I didn't know since the building is old. The gentleman told me they sell windows and do not repair them. I said that was fine because I didn't know if they needed repair or replacement. He suggested I hire a handyman; that is genius. Why didn't I think of that and went to a window and door vendor instead. My advice? Go somewhere else or find a handy man LOL. read more

Called the office (who wanted to help) and finally sent over an estimate of the wrong products. what a waste of time and energy. I can not recommend.Very disappointing experience.Salesman came out to measure and seemed very positive regarding replacement of my door .Other places that I have received quotes from got back to me within two or three days .A week went by and I hadn't heard anything so I called but it was too late they had closed.Now its the weekend so I called on Tuesday and spoke to a nice person and she was surprised that I had not been contacted .She said I would be contacted by the next day .She contacted me the next day with a voicemail stating that the salesman could not find the size I needed so they would not be able to do the job .I waited two weeks for this info .Very bad customer service . read more

I ordered a replacement Anderson window "sash" (bottom glass for a double-hung window) from JB Sash. The size required a special order, which takes about six weeks. After one week, I received a call that a sash in the correct size was found in stock at the warehouse. The installer came the next day. He removed the old sash, replaced it with the new sash, and then drilled in the two handles. The installer, Gary, was skilled and was polite besides. This is the second replacement "sash" which I ordered from JB Sash. In both cases, the work was done accurately and ahead of schedule. I am very satisfied with the products as well as with the service. read more

I hired JB Sash and Door to replace five custom windows. The windows required the approval of the South End Landmarks Commission. JB handled the whole process from initial measuring to permitting to final installation seamlessly. The windows were well designed, all materials appear to be first class, the finishes are superb and the workmanship is as good as it can get. I knew this would be a time consuming process, so I ordered the windows in May and scheduled the installation for September. In September we set the installation time and JB Sash kept to it exactly. After several months I have been able to get a little sense of how well they perform. They appear to be very tight and on a cold day showed significantly less air infiltration than similar sized Andersen Narroline windows with the same exposure. My only complaint involves my experience when I tried to check out their proposal against their display in the showroom. This is where a good salesperson would point out all the features of their window, answer my questions and close the deal. The sales person behind the counter showed no interest and only sort or pointed me towards the display. I have been a construction professional since 1960, so obtaining complete knowledge of a product I am buying is extremely important to me. As it turned out, i needn't have worried and I would do a similar project with them again with complete confidence. read more

My experience with J B Sash & Door could not have been more positive! Our door in a Boston South End brownstone needed to be replaced and they handle every step of the process professionally, efficiently and economically. Our process was complicated as the door needed to be approved by Boston Landmarks and our representative, Cheryl Carney helped to come up with options that would be approved by the city that also met our needs. J B Sash & Door worked with us on the proposal for Boston Landmark and without their assistance, we would not have received their approval. Our existing door frame is not standard and exact measurements and a custom order was required. An experienced rep came out to measure. When the door arrived at their warehouse (right on schedule), they sent two professional installers that had over 30 years of experience to fit the door in perfectly. The results look great and we could not be more pleased with J B Sash & Door! We are so pleased with the service, we are now working with them to replace our windows! read more

We had a negative experience with JB Sash. They replaced nearly all of the windows in our home under a previous owner. We were looking to get four windows replaced (the prior owner didn't have them all replaced) JB sent out two different people on two different occasions for measurement and we dealt with someone on the phone that had very short patience, and got frustrated if you asked questions. Sadly, ultimately, they couldn't replace the windows, and I'm still not sure why. We were once told they made wooden replacement windows, and then told that they didn't make wooden replacement windows. It might help if they had a better handle on their products available, and if sales had a bit of patience. read more
