This JC Thriftway is a gem of the Newport area, it has one of the best delis and their fried chicken should win an award...might be the best fried chicken I have ever had! They also smoke their own meats so you can get smoked chicken, turkey, tuna, salmon....you name it! One of our favorites is their smoked teriyaki chicken...its amazing! They always have great seafood as well, and I think another Yelper said they buy from the local fishermen, which is a huge plus! Right now its Dungee season so their seafood counter is stocked up with crab...fresh and local! This is just a great grocery store and I come here for lunch occasionally...and when I do its always busy! I always find something new when I come here for their deli, I believe they make their own salads and you never know what they are going to have...fried chicken, jo jos, mac and cheese, chicken tenders, etc in their hot area and sandwiches, wraps, burritos, more chicken, and all sorts of salads in their cold section. Their bakery is great also, they make really good cakes, in fact we ordered one for a friend for his birthday and it came out perfect! I always get good quality food items here, most locally made/caught, and I'm happy to support their business here in Newport! The checkers are also always friendly and I'm in and out in a flash, they keep people moving which is appreciated especially when I have limited time if I'm stopping by on my lunch hour. I definitely recommend their deli, you never know what they might have, but it will always be good! And if in doubt...just get the fried chicken! I'm actually updating this to deduct one star, because their produce selection is absolute garbage. Whoever manages it...doesn't.

After gorging myself on a fantastic lunch at JJ Ho International Café, I stopped here to pick up some road trip supplies, and though stuffed, their bakery case caught my eye, specifically the Nanaimo bars because when do you EVER see those anywhere? I ADORE Nanaimo bars, but have only ever had my own homemade version because they are not generally known here in the US. So yeah, those babies were coming with me, and I selected a regular and espresso variety (There was also Irish Cream, but I have to keep up the pretense of having some semblance of self-control so I didn't get that one. Wah). My husband loves eclairs so we got one too, and there were plenty of other goodies lining that case, so you should just go check 'em out yourself (the éclair was just average, but both Nanaimo bars were wonderful). The girl who assisted us at the bakery counter was enthustiastic and helpful. In addition, we stocked up on some other necessities: snacks, drinks, ice, and such. They've got anything a standard grocery store would carry, plus, though I didn't get the impression they make a big fuss of it, some neat local products, and a surprising amount and variety of beer and wine. It is an older store, but comes across as charming. Though I doubt I will be back in the area any time soon, I would return, and certainly with regularity if I lived in Newport. read more

If I could give it a zero I would. I cannot explain how many times I've gotten expired drinks or food or even just seen expired things on the shelf. When I mentioned it to a worker they said that they knew that a few rows of the kombucha were rather expired yet never apologized or realized it was wrong. I received many bones in my "boneless" smoked salmon and now I come home to see my Oreos are expired that I literally just purchased. Do we need to have the health department check their expiration dates all throughout the store. Not to mention Anna is one of the rudest employees I've ever encountered. This is a nice little locally owned Thirftway store - not many of these left. The staff are pretty friendly and helpful and the store is pretty well organized and clean. Having stopped in at the store several times over Thanksgiving week, I can say that each experience at the store was a positive one. Even on Thanksgiving day when I had to drive into town to get some last minute stuff that we were unable to get prior due to some issues at our rental property, the staff working showed no signs of being upset that they were at work on Thanksgiving and gave us a positive experience. The pricing is pretty typical for a store in this area, the selection as well and the location is very convenient. I can say that I will honestly make this a regular stop for groceries when I am in town visiting. read more

Next time i go in if it's better I will delete this or change it to more stars but they acted like I personally did something to them and that's how I felt. The best small market anywhere in the state. They are very community oriented and provide just about anything you would find in a "big box" grocery store. They have their own smoked meats and Fish that are wonderful. The people that work there are the best. The store is always clean. read more

Fair market price for the area, clean, friendly staff, and down home feel make this a nice stop. Video rental and wine/ craft beer selection as well. i have never had such bad service. i went in for genoa salami sliced thin. the attendant gave me some previously sliced salami. except for 1 package that wasn't marked. the person apparently in charge did not want to cut it as was as thin as SHE wanted, and SHE had another order and the machine would have to be cleaned etc. it would take a long time. I took what was cut AND SKIPPED my order for cheese. i will never go there again for deli or maybe anything else. read more

The owners Lyle and Diane are local folks who generously contribute to local charities, especially the cancer survivor's fundraiser, along with serving on the hospital foundation! They buy from local fisherman when possible so the fish is fresher than supermarkets which truck their fish in. They have a great selection of wines. Many young people in Newport started their first jobs here and the entire staff is eager to help. Open 24 hours a day and the closest grocery store to the tourist spots. read more

The Oregon Coast isn't a place to go, it's place to experience. That experience deserves hunkering in, settling down, and some serious exploring. My personal favorite hiding spot can be found in the little town of Newport. Some of the places here are ones I'll tell you about, others you'll have to discover on your own (trust me, it's better this way). Part of the setting in process involves a trip to a grocery store for the staples. If you're like us, these items may include, but will not be limited to, the following: dog bones, tea, wine, sea salt (and potentially a mill), firewood, gossip magazines, and cream cheese. You'll find all these things and more at J.C.'s. Which you probably could have guessed from the name. As it suggests, JC's provides you with a bit of everything. In emergency situations, they have a notary and a post office. They also have a pay phone and a video store (5 movies, 5 days, 5 dollars). It's a little-known fact that they have some of the best grocery store wine offerings around, including some rare Oregon gems. So if you're here, come on down! It's wonderful to see a local grocery that's plugging away, doing what they do, not trying to be anything they're not, and appealing to the masses. Way to go J.C.'s. JC Market in Newport is a truly loved local fixture. It was owned by Jim & Cleo Vickers, even back when it was a Sentry Market. (it has been under the Thriftway banner for some years now) There is one here in Newport & a slightly smaller one 7 miles inland, up Hwy 20, in Toledo. Jim & Cleo have since passed but their tradition lives on through the present owner Lyle, whom was manager for years. Hooray Lyle. A stupendous vintage wine selection, walk in beer cooler, for those whom imbibe. Always dry ice to keep your fresh catch fresh. They butcher their own meat & if you're lucky enough to bag a local deer or elk, they can handle that for you too. Lots of local catch seafood in the seafood dept. They even have elk, pheasant, goose, etc. for sale to the public. Crab bait to catch your own Dungeness Crab is available in the freezer. They offer superb smoked meats, done with expertise on site. They will fillet or steak up any fish you get in the meat dept, including cleaning your Dungeness Crab for a much better eating experience. Videos, Post Office, lottery, money orders. Great in house bakery for special orders, deli for fresh rotisserie chicken, made-to-order sandwiches. A variety of local caught & canned tuna. I hope they let me add a picture here, because the mail reason I decided to comment today is the tremendous lobster tails I bought there today. At $29 each, (not by pound) they are incredible. Averaged about 16 to 24 ounces. Biggest I've seen in person, beautiful tails, that's no tale. Other locals sell, 4, 6, 8 oz tails at $30 + a lb. Freddies has always touted itself as a one stop shopping experience, JC is just that. They even open & check every dozen eggs, then rubber band them safely closed. I guess you get it, I Like it! Excellent small market with very friendly and helpful people. Unlike the 2 big mega-centers in Newport, this Thriftway doesn't require hiking boots and a compass to find a couple of items. There's plenty of variety, and the produce is beautiful -- and you can refill your water jugs for just .49 / gal -- making it a great place to get good, reverse-osmosis water for making coffee and tea.... The meat market has good looking beef and pork, as well as the requisite seafood; and the little bakery/deli appears to draw some lunchers. I will be trying their to-go bar in the future. They also have a great looking wine shop. It would probably be better if I actually knew something about wines -- but I trust the other reviewers when they say it is an above average selection. They also have great beautiful wine/picnic carriers. And -- they had my favorite Cajun hot pepper sauce (Trappey's Red Devil.) Yay! This is the first place anywhere on the coast, or in Tigard or Portland that I've found it! read more

If you enjoy wine, this is THE best place along the coast to purchase it, if not in the Portland area. They carry wines that the serious wine connoisseur would appreciate. They carry bottles that would cost the amount of a mortgage payment for some people but also plenty of every day wines at very competitive prices. Solid grocery store, more so than I expected. They have everything you need and the prices aren't too bad. A lot of good beer.

Passive aggressive nasty mean "good ol' boy network" management. You'd have to work there to know that so the average customer doesn't see it. It's incredibly well-put together from the customer's point of view. They have a very difficult time keeping quality employees in their departments. Floor level managers stomp the descent employees into the ground and they end up walking out. Upper level management protects the shitty staff like The Chains Of St. Peter. If they would just take their heads out of their butts long enough to see that their constant struggle to retain quality staff is a direct indication that their management style continues to fail. I think the department managers could absolutely benefit from sensitivity training. Yelling at people with disabilities is not the way to get ahead, and they will be lucky if one of them doesn't contact the appropriate county department as a result. read more

Ordered daughters wedding cake at the bakery. Just a sheet cake with some flowers and lemon filling but the result was a beautiful cake . Oh my goodness. It was delicious! Stopped in at JC's to get a bottle of wine for dinner. WOW!! This market has a wine selection that knocked our socks off. We ended up getting a bottle of Korbel Champagne since they carried a variety we cannot find in our hometown. Highly recommend this place for visitors and locals alike. read more

This store is like shopping was back in the '60s. They bag your items properly (eggs on bottom, bread on top, etc) and take your cart to your car to unload like a full-service grocer should. They have a large selection of items (even carry the Silk Soy Light Chocolate Soymilk that isn't found at Fred Meyer or Walmart)and excellent fried chicken.
