What a best kept secret kind of place. This is a great salon. It's hidden in the back of the store so you need more than a gps to find it but other than that it's a great place. I had a very disappointing experience at this salon. I arrived for my daughter's appointment for a wash, blow dry, and haircut, which I booked online. The stylist had done my daughter's hair before, so I didn't expect any issues. As soon as we arrived, she asked, "Who booked this appointment for you?" I told her I booked it online. She immediately began telling me that my daughter had "too much hair" for the service I selected and said that the service was for their "white customers." She told me I should have booked a Signature Blowout instead and that I should have called the salon rather than booking online. I understand that textured hair services may require additional time, and the salon does have a separate section for textured hair services. However, a wash, blow dry, and haircut is not listed under that section, so I booked the haircut service exactly as it appeared online. There was nothing during the booking process indicating that this service was limited to certain hair types or that it wasn't appropriate for my daughter. The stylist then said she could "try to do something" with my daughter's hair but wouldn't have enough time. By that point, I was uncomfortable with both her comments and the way she spoke to me. I told her not to worry about it because I no longer wanted her servicing my daughter, and we left. If the salon has different requirements based on hair type, texture, or length, that should be clearly explained in the online booking system. More importantly, those conversations should be handled professionally and respectfully. Unfortunately, this experience made us feel unwelcome, and I won't be returning. read more

I've been to the RR JC Penney's Salon a few times and I'm never disappointed ( stylist Karen and Manager of the Salon usually does my cut ). This time my appointment was with Willow and she did an amazing job with my layered Wolf cut. I even asked to keep the longest layer long with little trim and she did exactly as I asked. It was a full hair wash, cut and blow-dry and I asked for a recommendation to put moisture back in my hair and we did that first-w/ a Redkin product and my hair is so darn soft; but honestly, I love my layered cut. This is my first visit and I don't know why. I frequently shop at JCPenney and I forget they have a salon. I had Bonnie as a stylist. She was GREAT! She was gentle and made sure to ask me before just adding different products or making decisions about my hair. The only hiccup is the time allowed for my hair process. They only booked an hour and we needed 2 hours. Thankful the client right after was okay with shopping first. Booking online was impossible even though it is preferred. I was able to call and book my appointment much easier than online (it did not work). The service was good with that typical salon vibe. I got exactly what I asked for. Went for a haircut with a stylist. Showed her a picture of an angled bob of what I wanted. First red flag, she said she could not do that on my hair but had an idea. I gave her the opportunitity. The whole experience from wash to the cut lasted tops 20 minutes. Ended up with a cut with bangs. I got up and told her that I did not like it. Ended up paying in full and acted in a civilized manner. Left and after looking at it some more I came back. I am very thankful for the other stylist who took the time to fix my hair. First let me say I did not know JCP had a salon inside the store. Had been going for months and never knew it was inside. Being at the very back of the store would make the store loose clients. Upon arriving to the salon a few minutes early I was greeted by Erin. She informed me she was finishing up with another client and would be right with me. Waiting maybe :5 minutes and Erin walked me into the salon. What I liked about her she asked me questions about my concerns when it comes to my hair. She listened to me and explained everything she was doing throughout the process. I loved she was so friendly and took her time. I will definitely be returning to see Erin again! read more

This is going to be a very long review but the short version is this entire process was excruciatingly painful for me and I'm never coming back. The end result of me getting my hair done here was me having a panic attack in the bathroom and a very sore scalp and it's two days after the morning of my appointment. I went to this salon with my mother and we booked appointments with the same stylist at the same time from a recommendation. The stylist asked me what my hair concerns were and what I wanted done. I explained to her that I just wanted my hair shampooed, conditioned, and blow dried. That's it. I told her that I sweat a lot and have since childhood. I didn't want my hair pressed or straightened because I don't like the way I look with super straight flat ironed hair. I like having fluffy afro hair. On top of that when I sweat the hair closest to my scalp reverts to it's curly state. The entire consultation was disappointing to say the least, I've never met this woman a day in my life but through the entire appointment she seemed irritated with everything I said. She went through my hair and said I had too much product in it and my scalp was congested and I needed a detox treatment before my shampoo and that we would do that before the wash and then we'd shampoo and style it and that if this first appointment wasn't to my liking I could book with her again and we could work with what I preferred and go from there. Cool. So she gets a mixture to detox my hair and goes to part/section off my hair. She dragged her parting tool against my scalp and then grabbed either section of my hair and ripped at it to part it. I instantly tensed up and said OW and she said "oh are you tender headed?" and I said yes and she said "well I'll try to be more gentle I'm not trying to traumatize you" and went back to doing the same painful ripping motions. My hair was tangled and it had product in it but it wasn't matted to my head by any means. The ripping through my hair was extremely painful but as a black woman who has had traumatic hair experiences in the past I didn't want to start complaining so I just sat through it squeezing my hands together waiting for it to be over. At the shampoo bowl I thought this is the relaxing part where my scalp gets a gentle massage, we'll add conditioner and detangle and the pain would stop. We get to the washing process and it is more pain on top of pain, there was no massaging with the pads of her fingers she was scratching my scalp with her nails. At one point during the shampoo she asked me what my sign was I misunderstood and thought she asked if I was okay and I said "no this is really painful" and she repeated the question asking my sign and I said "I'm a libra" and she said "ugh well I guess I'm done speaking to you for the rest of the appointment" After the conditioning process she held up a few strands of wet hair and asked if I had the covid vaccine and booster. I said yes and she said that's why my hair came out in the bowl like this because the vaccine and booster cause hair loss. She then told me to go sit in the styling chair and proceeded to go back to the same ripping processes to part and section my hair. There was no detangling done and it was still really painful. She had a blow dryer with no attachment on it pressed up against my hair and grabbed at it with a paddle brush with missing bristles and just raked it through my hair. So again we're just ripping through my hair only now there's heat being added with a blow dryer pressed against it. When she was done blow drying it she went to straighten it with a flat iron when I said I didn't want my hair pressed in the beginning. I should've said stop but I didn't I just sat there worn out from the pain. She began to ask questions and make inappropriate comments about my illness and the medication I take asking if there was something else I could take because of the effects it had on my hair. The flatiron was too close and kept burning my scalp and I still said nothing and just accepted it. When she was finished she grabbed a pair of shears and said she wanted to trim my ends and held out how much she wanted to cut off and I had finally had enough and said no. I was done. She then showed my mother and said all I want to cut is this much, that's not bad right? As if my opinion was invalid and at 30 years old my mom's opinion should trump my own. My mom asked me if I was done with all of this and I said yes. I didn't want my hair cut and I didn't want it curled like the stylist offered. I didn't want anything else done anymore. My mother was now getting styled and told me I should go take a walk and get some air. I didn't even make it into the bathroom before I started crying and hyperventilating and having a panic attack. Sitting through the pain, having someone criticize my medical choices, not having my hair styled the way I asked wrecked me. My mother was happy with her experience so to each their own. read more

Had a 6am flight the next morning. Week long biz trip. Nappy, yucky state my hair was in. Walked into Sport Clips. I swear every dude in Round Rock was waiting to get a cut. Damn, man. Googled salons in the area. JCPenney. Open until 8pm. Wait, What!? Haircut at Penney's? That's where my mom bought my school clothes when I was a kid. Ok, I'll deal, MUST. GET. CUT. Virginia was my stylist. I was nervous. Virginia did an excellent job on my hair. I was so pleased. I've since been back two additional times and plan to keep returning. $18 for a men's cut, which includes shampoo. You can't beat that with a stick! Nicholle was my colorist and she did a really nice job. She took her time to match my current color with the new one and included a toner to help all the color blend well and last longer. She was super friendly and we had just the right amount of chit chat. Overall, it was a great experience and I will certainly be back when I need all over color again. They told me to show up for my appointment between 1:15-1:30. I arrived around 1:20-1:25, but was not seen until almost 2:00 pm. I called ahead to find out how much my haircut would cost before scheduling an appointment. I was not told over the phone, upon walking in, or after talking to the stylist about what I wanted, that there would be an extra $10 charge to cut long hair (my hair is a few inches below my shoulders, not obscenely long). It was not until after my hair had been washed and I was already seated that the stylist informed me about the extra charge. The stylist did not listen very well to what I wanted. My haircut was fine, but it's not what I asked for. She was not talkative, and the only time we spoke (besides when she asked me about cutting specific areas of my hair) was when I initiated the conversation. She replied very curtly. This was one of the most unprofessional salon businesses that I have encountered. I'm very disappointed with the service I received here. read more

THIS IS REGARDING THE SALON HERE AT UNIVERSITY OAKS IN JCP. Whatever you do, DO NOT GO HERE unless you know someone that has got a good haircut from a specific person! One of my friends recommended this place when I asked my friends for a good hair stylist/salon that is semi cheap. IT IS NOT WORTH IT. I booked with Theresea, apparently a master stylist. I had called earlier and made an appointment for 5:30 p.m. When I got there, there was no one to check us in and a lady asked if we had an appointment, which I replied, yes, and she said do you know with who? I said her name is thersea. She replied, "Oh I'm Theresea, I thought I was done after this one" (referring to the lady in her seat.) She made smart comments about, WHO PUT SOMEONE ON MY BOOKS WHILE I WAS AT LUNCH, and APPARENTLY I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT. She tried to pawn me off to another lady who did not know how to speak English, and we barely could understand each other. She double checked to see I had an appointment and it was with Theresa. When she tried to give the paperwork to Theresa, she said, "Why dont you go ahead and take it?" and she told her to take me since she doesn't do walk ins. I replied with I made an appointment and was referred by a friend who said this place was good. I told her that I hadn't gotten my hair cut in TWO years because of my bad experiences and I requested a master stylist. She then finished up with her customers haircut, complaining about how JCP only lets them work part time, no one is full time, so no benefits, and saying they only have a person to answer phones for only 20 hours a week. She told me, and other customers not to call JCP Salon as no one will answer the phone because no one is there, and to just walk in. That's terrible. Bad mouthing the company, and making yourself look bad. I WAS COMPLETELY TURNED OFF BY THIS POINT. But against my better judgement, I really needed a hair cut. She then began insulting my hair, and how she will not spend 5 hours cutting my split ends. She showed me a way to do it myself when I was home. Why am I coming to a salon to pay you 32 dollars and a tip if I COULD do it at home? I KNOW MY HAIR IS BAD. I'm here for you to fix it. She continued telling me terrible things about my hair, too dry, too thin, too flat, etc. She ended up cutting my hair OKAY. But considering the personality and customer service. We went to get our son's their free haircuts and I have to say I was more than happy with the results. I don't recall the lady's name who did our son's hair however she was a short mexican lady who was a perfectionist! My oldest son wouldn't stay still and so he made it a challenge for her however I think this is the best haircut both my sons have ever received! read more

Mindy has done my hair about 4 or 5 times now and I love it every time! I have incredibly fine, child-like hair and I am very particular about who I trust to cut it because if it's not properly blended every single scissor cut shows and it can look very stair-steppy and awful. I wear a short bob which is a very technical cut as well and she always does a great job of giving me exactly what I want. I highly recommend this stylist, especially if you have fine hair like me. read more

If I could give zero I would. I went in for a cut and color and when I got home I washed my hair again and there was still dye in it. Once it dried my hair was patchy and looked absolutely horrible I called and was told to call in Sunday and speak with Liz who I was lead to believe was a manager. When I spoke to Liz on Sunday I was told to call in and speak the the manager Ashley Monday. Now I work and could not go to work looking homeless so I had to fix my hair Sunday in preparation for work Monday. I spoke to Ashley and she had an instant attitude and told me that I would've had had to reschedule and have the same rep who completely messed my hair to fix it and at this point there was absolutely nothing she could do and that if my hair was bad enough I could make the time in my work schedule to come in. read more

Got my hair cut here yesterday and Mindy was my stylist. She asked me what I wanted and when I told her what I was looking for she said absolutely and gave me the best hair cut I have had in years. Every time I get my hair cut I ask the stylists to not only give me layers but to thin it out as well. Most stylists will refuse to thin my hair even though it is extremely thick and will say all I need is layers. I told Mindy this and she told me she had no problem giving me what I asked for. She was extremely sweet and was kind to my step son who was there with me. For the quality of the cut I received I was expecting to pay an outrageous amount of money, but I was actually a decent price! I will definitely continue to get my hair cut here! read more

I went to get my hair colored the lady told me it would only take an hour and 15 min it ended up taken her over 2hours the whole experience was horible she got black dye on my shirt and new bra(yes I was wearing a gown) don't ask how that happen anyway I went to pay and they charged me an extra 15 bucks to put bio silk in my hair which she never asked me if I wanted it nor told me she put it in there and I didn't see her because she had me facing the wall the whole time instead of the mirrior then I'm in the car driving home lada da! Had a itch in my head went to scratch and there was clumps of dye all over still seriosly? That's not all I get home to find patches of brown I wanted my hair all one color soft black. Not worth $70 I will never go back I could have bought dye from wal mart and done a better job. read more

Lisa is the absolute best! I've been going to Lisa for at least 4 years now. I've never been happier with any other stylist. She is everything you want in a stylist and much more. Let's start with her expertise...she knows her stuff and gets the color right every time. She is excellent with color and style. I love that Lisa takes her time and never rushes. She takes time to give me tips to moisturize and take care of hair. She listens to what her customers want and is very honest and realistic about what would work best for your face shape, etc. I wouldn't trust my hair to anyone else. Now, moving on to customer relations. Lisa is always very professional and courteous. I started taking my kids to Lisa and each time they are happy with their cut and style.
