Explorer Marine sent out their lead mechanic, Beto, who had repaired my cousin's generator. The issue I was having was the gauge was showing a "check sensor, check engine message." Beto came out the first day and spent 6.5 hours diagnosing the issue, which he found. I was with him the entire day. I went to my boat a week later and the engine wouldn't start again. This time the gauge showed a "lost comm" error. Beto returned to my boat yesterday and left after a couple of hours. He said it was due to corroded connectors. I wasn't with him this time. Again, I saw him arrive and leave on my Ring camera today. I thought he had fixed it yesterday. He and another technician spent a couple more hours to mitigate a different issue. I thought, "Great, what now?" My head was exploding with dollar signs increasing. After speaking with Michael (Manager), it turns out one of the connector pins that plugs into the pcm was bent. It must have inadvertently happened when Beto was working on my boat the first time he was over. I emailed Shannon, the office manager and told her that I had spoken to Michael, who mentioned the issue was a "bent" connector pin. Beto confirmed it with the office, therefore, it was covered under warranty. If it was a different issue, it would have cost me even more. I HIGHLY recommend Explorer Marine. I feel a business with integrity will be nothing, but successful. They could have told me it was a different issue and could have charged me even more. Boat mechanics are NOT cheap and a good and honest company is almost impossible to find. Thank you Beto and Explorer Marine for your honesty!! Initially, I was…read moreunclear about various businesses working together with Safe Harbor Marine, where I was hauling out my 33 foot sloop for bottom cleaning and painting. I advised them that I wanted two seacocks inspected and possibly replaced, as well as repacking of both the prop shaft and rudder post. Upon haulout, I was directed across the yard to Morton Marine for those engineering issues, as Safe Harbor was only handling the bottom exterior of the boat. Upon arrival, I met with Stan, who was aware of the work I had requested, and came with me to size up what was needed before the boat even left the water. He clearly understood my concerns and described a plan of action. He was certain the work would be completed within the 4 days Safe Harbor was allowing for the bottom job. Before I went home on day one, the boat was hauled and on jackstands. I was absent for day 2, but they must have hit the ground running as most of my work items were handled then. On the morning of day 3, I was back to the yard to check on progress, and found the Morton Marine employee Vadim just finishing the rudder post packing. Everything I'd asked for was done and the yard was planning for launching soon. He then told me that they had observed pin hole leaks of water from my engine exhaust hose that was next to the rudder post. I knew the hose was old, but was surprised that it was worn to the point of failure, allowing exhaust gasses into the interior of the boat, a very dangerous situation. Of course I directed that it be replaced, which was possible pierside after launching. This called for removal of a decorative panel covering a wooden box thru-way for the hose to rise vertically upward a few feet above the waterline to prevent vacuum siphoning of seawater into the engine. At this point Ken Morton (owner and ops boss) arrived and personally assisted in panel removal to ensure it was not damaged. Mine must've been the smallest job in the yard, but the attention I was getting was amazing. We then found very rusted and disintegrating stainless tubing at the top of the hose loop. Ken said he would try to find a replacement, but it might have to be fabricated (very expensive). I was resigned to the cash outlay since this was a serious safety hazard, but the next morning Ken called to advise that Stan had reminded him that a far less expensive fiberglass loop was available. Five hours later, everything was done, including Stan adjusting the prop packing gland for a proper drip rate with shaft turning ahead and astern pierside. The worksite (my galley, head, and aft cabin) was wiped down and vacuumed. Everything Vadim and Stan worked on was clean and meticulously done to the highest standards. I am very grateful to Vadim, and Stan, and Ken for their superb work and attention to a major safety issue I had missed. These are the guys I will return to for boat servicing in the future, and I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone needing engineering work on their boat in the San Diego area.

It's been a few years, but I was back again to build a custom stainless bracket to lock in the bottom of a Scanstrut radar mount on my 33 foot sloop. The original bracket from the manufacturer was not adequate for the location where it needed to be, and the twisting moment was actually pulling the mounting screws out of my toe rail, so I designed something better, and asked if it could be built within a week before the next winter rains roll in. Rich was very kind to help get it his welder to build it in 2 days. It was exactly to my sketch and measurements, was a perfect fit when I got it to the boat, and was beautifully polished. Yes, it was expensive, but worth it to have a beautiful item of custom work looking so good on my boat well before my deadline.

This review should be Zero stars for FWM but they did convince me to spend a lot of money and for…read moreawhile I believed they had my best interests in mind. That was my biggest mistake. The main proprietor, Gary, seems extremely knowledgeable but it doesn't matter if he's not doing the job and there is no Quality Assurance of the work performed. Each time I received my boat back from FWM, it was a mess with oil and fluids everywhere and additional problems to follow shortly after. I repeatedly tried to trust this outfit but it was in vain. Before you use FWM, ask who is doing the work and how they will ensure quality control of the work they do. A technician sent alone to my vessel was a fluid tech from automotive field with little knowledge of the boat he was working on. Service writer is extremely nice and friendly but also a transplant from automotive. Business partner is a hot head and was incapable of reinstalling a sea water impeller which I had to do for them while they present and were being paid to work on my vessel. After performing two major services to my vessel, requiring haul-out and lengthy down-time, FWM failed to properly secure an exhaust bypass hose connected to a through-hull and the result was an engine room filled with diesel exhaust that shut off power the the turbo and rendered my vessel nearly limp in open seas under rough conditions. The culprit was two hose clamps left open after their removal of transmission for a service that may have caused additional and larger issues. The soot alone coated every inch of the engine room and ruined the fresh air intakes for two engines. Leaving the boat a mess after service is bad enough. Having additional mechanical issues on the same component after two very expensive and connected repairs is extremely coincidental. But, creating potentially catastrophic damage to a vessel off-shore and underway is negligence and should be criminal. Instead of taking any responsibility, Gary will defend this by pointing out how I lost my cool when they reported a completely damaged outrigger through saying, "I'm sure you know about this already" and then telling me "it's not our responsibility to give you the name of the person that told us". Or how I was upset when I received a lecture on "Industry Standards" after I alerted them that the tech should not start the engines without opening the raw water intakes first. I'm sure FWM feels they did the best for me. That is the scary part. They feel righteous about their work. Rather, they failed each time to even clean up after themselves, left bolts out when doing reassembly, damaged in-tact hoses during reassembly causing leaks, and failed to secure a critical exhaust hose leading to multiple issues and eventually causing a major cleanup job and replacement of expensive components. Each time FWM has defended themselves instead of doing the job right or at least providing a customer with proper info an opportunity to ask if the issues were related. Yet, still I paid and paid and even wanted them to come back and finish the job. Why? Because they were to my knowledge at the time, the only show in town and also because I believed they would make it right. Boy was I wrong. Part, service writers, and techs are not to blame here. This review lies squarely on the owners. They present a heck of a front and even take the time to write lengthly dissertations on their work but they don't follow through, check the work conducted by their junior technicians, or stand behind their mistakes. Worst experience about boating in 20+ years on the water. I have built and maintained relationships with all of FWM's surrounding vendors for years and thought this was to be the same. Instead, this experience makes me sure I will never own a vessel with similar components requiring me to work with this group again.

He is incredibly helpful, charges fair prices for labor and parts and was very nice. I still find it amazing that he came to my house and made the necessary repairs for a great price. I even called the store and still received no callback. Very disappointing. I was a ready-to-buy customer, and a simple return call would have gone a long way.
