They do not allow you to book with a specific level of student. Maybe it's just me, but I'm not willing to risk that! They also require an allergy test if you want color. You have to go for a test and then come back 48 hours later in order to get a color. Who has time for that?!?! As a teacher, I like to support this type of education. It's a shame they make it hard to support the students. read more

Their receptionist(s) have ALWAYS been pleasant n efficient, and they almost always assign me to one of their veteran students, whose teachers are amazing. teachers are amazing. What a disappointment! First off, my student couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating. That, however, didn't make up for a total lack of supervision or knowledge. I do have thick hair, which I often have done at another school in the Ambler area and where there is always an instructor to supervise or make suggestions. Obviously, they are not all equal, but at no time would they let me walk out looking like my hair was made of steel wool and flying in many different directions. Many years ago I was actually a patron of Adolph Biecker (as well as Jean Madeleine's later). Either one would have been embarrassed to allow anyone to walk out looking like that. I had a great experience at this salon! I received lots of compliments on my hair. First I was a bit nervous since they are students but the student did a great job and she asked for help when needed from professors. Poor girl had to blow dry my hair and it took about an hour but she did the best she could and then cut my hair dry. She did a great job! read more

This is my 2nd Time coming to Jean Madeline Neshaminy both times I had Courtney M she was very Professional and did a amazing Job. The first time I got full highlights and a cut, I have very thick hair and alot of it so it wasn't easy, Courtney did a excellent job I got so many compliments I was extremely happy with the end result. The 2nd time I just got a cut. I explained to Courtney what I wanted and once again she did a amazing job. You can not beat this place. It is a beauty school; so the prices are cheap ($16 for a haircut) and they use the BEST products. You can't go there if you are in a rush b/c they are students!! This is a gem for those that are on tight budget but still want to go to the salon. I had a wonderful experience. My recommendation is to go very prepared. I took pictures of how I wanted my haircut to be and guided the student on how I like to style my hair. It was the longest haircut I've ever gotten, but it was worth it! I just recently went for a cut and style. I met Kathleen, who was working on some advanced training, explained to her my hair routine and I am very low maintenance with my hair. Her teacher explained to her how to do a few things and we all agreed on how to cut and layer my hair and then she got to work. She did a very nice head and scalp massage during the shampoo and a very detailed cut. She was a very nice girl and her instructor was very nice and thorough as well; you can tell they are passionate about what they are doing. I came here before at the Mayfair location for updos and makeup for proms and weddings but this was my first cut and it was very nice. I would come back for another cut. read more

I had my first appointment to receive a haircut and then the next week, I returned to have my hair colored professionally. Both visits went smooth and Jamie, listened and suggested ideas. Very disappointed in the results. My student acted so confident when I asked if layering my hair would be difficult for her. I explained to instructor & showed picture but never saw her again. Student waited for instructors approval but she just walked by & said 90. I never got to see back but saw how short she cut the side of my hair. Another instructor came & took over. I was horrified how bad my cut was when I got home. I had to go to another salon next day to get it all re-cut! I now have short hair but at least it looks better than how I left the school. This student was not ready to cut hair on people without constant supervision! Not sure of her name as there was 2 names on my receipt: Naran D & Marianny D. I was wrong.. there were 4 diff staff at the register talking away and I wasn't greeted or asked what I wanted. they went on with their conversation.. I went up to the counter and was still ignored. For the most part, I might actually wait until they move out to their Neshaminy Mall location. Usually, I don't like making advance appointments since I like to stay flexible and I rarely have trouble coming in as a walk-in client. Well, to my surprise, I walked in on Saturday, September 30th and they told me they were fully booked (even for a simple haircut) and that the next opportunity for walk-in service wouldn't be until sometime until October 7th when I was expecting to be out of town. Since I was in desperate need for a cut, I decided they didn't need my business that day. Besides, previous service here has been pretty much hit or miss depending on the student doing my haircut. I understand my thick and constantly growing hair can be a challenge to some, but I can't be as bad as the next person. There very cheap, but really good on the hair... i had 3 different process's & only paid $65 for long hair... which would of cost me about $180 elsehwere. I've been there about 10 x, the teacher superviser oversees the entire thing. 1 time the color didnt take, i made a complaint & got a free do over! Very unhappy. Have been going to the aveda in philly for about 5 years and with the exception of 2 times haven't had a bad situation. The student was great, but the instructors were appalling. Not great supervision to begin with and then when I asked them to thin my hair the way I have it done (which I know is not the approved way and tell them that) the teachers were rude and disrespectful. I'm not a student, I don't need you to be rude. Even that I could tolerate, but then they did a crap job and ruShed the thinning and did in 15 seconds what should take like 5 minutes. Went here yesterday, and came out with the best haircut I've had in 5 years! (Ask for Taylor C if you go!) I know that people have complained about the time, but you have to bear in mind that *these are students*, and you're paying bargain prices for this kind of work - that's something you should expect going in, especially in a place like the Aveda Institute that is training people to be *really excellent* at what they do. I got my hair done by Alanna she is amazingly wonderful. I have been treating my hair like trash and she's been systematically fixing it for me. The teachers are wonderful always making sure all students know the best way to do something which makes me feel happy. First of off they charged me $115 to botch my hair . I get it there students but you go there understanding they haven't been doing this for 20 years not that they will botch your hair . I had to pay another $262 dollar for a color damage and good products at a actually good salon in order to fix the damage they did . They were only willing to refund me 47 dollars or have the same girl who botched it in the first place do it again . I left there in tears and after fighting with the director for 4 days I took my lost and over all have spent close to $400 dollars in my hair bc of them . She was explaining every detail she was going to do before she did it and she was really confident doing it. The worst experience ever! Yesterday I went to Jean Madeline Aveda Institute on Mayfair to have my haircut done. I had a student named Jeanine who's never done that before! The student was anxious and sloppy. She called the teacher four times :). At the end, she totally messed up my bang. The teacher she was calling to help (miss Foss or Fuss or whatever) didn't pay too much attention neither, even she knew this is her student first "live haircut: . As follows, I ended with a butchered hair. Today I go to Violet in order to have my hair fixed. I will never go to that damn school again! read more

Went here around the beginning of December and I didn't have high expectations because I knew my hair was beyond repair, all there was left was to chop everything off and I was ready to chop it all off BUT they were able to leave my hair at mid length giving it some time to grow some more. I also got a color and I walked out feeling great about my hair. The students here already know what to do but they have a teacher always around and making sure you are okay. This was my first time getting a haircut at a beauty school, and I loved it. I was assigned to a student who had my same hairtype and everyone was very nice. Her teacher checked everything - took about 2 hours. There is one small piece that looks too long- so I would say there is a noticeable difference from my usual $65 haircut, but definitely worth it for $16! The issue with this place is that it is hit or miss... Unfortunately for me, today was a miss!! From the start I felt that the student that was going to do my hair was inexperienced and not sure about anything. From the way the parted my hair for the coloring I should have known that this was not going to end well. Long story short, I left with a much darker hair that what we (the student, the instructor and myself) had agreed upon. I had a trim that was joke because the student was unable to do it herself so she called the instructor that "did it" in 2 minutes. I stayed there for 3 hours and not once was offered water. By the end I had such a headache I just wanted to get out of there. The instructors were not helpful at all by recognizing that the color was indeed not what I wanted, but not offering absolutely any solution. I left disappointed, but for $17 I am not sure I can complain that much :( read more

I came in for a men's haircut during the evening hours and I was highly impressed. The outstanding professionalism combined with good atmosphere really made it feel like a real salon rather than a school. The instructors are always around so for those that are fearful of your hair getting butchered this is not the case at Jean Madeline... Also the price was great $10 and they washed my hair... Kineatha Austin has been the best student I have encountered in this school , she greets me with professionalism , than she asks what my desires are ,She askes me if I like something to drink green tea or water and goes to work and asks how can she make me look as I want to look .Kineatha massages my scalp and hands .This young lady cares and is so passionate about her work and care of her customer. Kineatha is an asset to this school. Kineatha goes and gets the professor and they seem to know she is capable to do her work without much supervision. Kineatha gets the materials she needs and starts her work as I wait for the process to finish of hair dye. she shows me pictures of possible cuts that would enhance my appearance . Kineatha at the end creates art and makes me feel as if I'm the only person she cares about at this time, lastly the professor has very little to do at the end of the process. 3/19/16 I had my hair high-lighted today and I love,love,love it!! My student stylist was Amanda P. And she did an awesome job. My color is Soo beautiful!! You can't beat the price here. I used to spend a fortune at regular salons but now I use Jean Madeline always. I'm never disappointed. Ever!!! Amanda also did a great job blow drying,it looked very good. Amanda, I'm going to hate it when you graduate! LOL Everyone there is so nice. The instructors are great,always ready to answer any questions the student stylist has.
