I came to Jeffery Salon on a recommendation of a girl with amazing hair I saw on the street. I then read all the reviews and decided to give Jeff a chance. My hair was very brassy and gold. I had a rushed and bad color from Amaci Salon. I was hopping for the awful gold to be gone or somewhat better after I left. But my hair was left gold and not much of a difference. After my hair was done he could tell I was not that thrilled with the color and so he said it would take a few times to get the gold out.... but the funny part was ...that at my roots were gold too. Bc he added a gold toner to my hair! . A few days later his secretary called to ask how i liked the salon/ color etc.. I called back and said that I felt my hair was gold and brassy and I was not happy. SHe said she will call me back and she would speak to Jeffery about the issue. I never recieved a call and So, I was pissed and dissapointed.Spending almost 400.00 .. really????? I will not be going back and nor will I make another apt with this Salon. Funny now that I recall, when I was there a woman had called Jefferey b/c she needed him to correct his color he did on her. When She came in and she got a toner and as she walked out the door... he mumbled sorry about that. Quite sad as this is his Salon w/ his name on the door. THe only upside was his staff seemed very polite and nice and the woman that washed my hair was sweet and gave a great head maasage. read more

6 reviews and not one about Justine...so I need to send her some love :) The Jeffrey Lyle Salon is lucky to have her. I have been a customer of hers for about 5 years. When I first came to her my hair was completely fried from years of sun and salt water from years of living in Hawaii...fried to the point where my bangs were sticking straight up. I know, hot. I have had many different styles with her from black bob to long brown, to reddish curly...haven't done blonde, as the salon is known for, but only because I know I'd be too lazy to come in and get my roots done in time, and look like trailer trash shortly after. She is awesome at cut, color, correcting disasters, blowouts...even hair wahes...I told her I need her to live with me so she can do my scalp massages and wash my hair every morning. So far, she has not taken me up on my offer. Hmph. I guess I'll just have to go to the salon. There has been multiple times I have had random girls ask me where I've gotten my hair done. Definitely go to Jeffrey Lyle Salon and request her. Oh, and she was also awarded Best of Boston for women's high end stylist. Many great experiences here. Was back today after having let my hair go for a while. Jeffrey does amazing work. It's guaranteed that you will walk out looking great. I had a great experience at Jeffrey's salon and I highly suggest booking your next appointment here! I was looking for a salon that's reputable in balayage and after reading the yelp reviews and some other websites that recommends this salon, I decided to give it a shot, and I'm very happy that i did. Jeffrey, Mae and Cortney were all so friendly and welcoming from the second I came into the salon which is so comforting compared to other salons on Newbury that have been more pretentious than they deserved to be. Everyone in the salon, clients and staff, were talking and everyone was so friendly that it made the two hour appointment go by much faster than past appointments at different salons. Cortney did a partial balayage and a cut and blowdry on my hair and it came out amazing. She went above and beyond my expectations so I definitely recommend her for your balayage. I've visited Nacar at the Jeffrey Lyle Salon twice and am now booking my third appointment! The salon is well known for their blonde coloring as being the best in Boston, which is what brought me in to their doors in the first place. Finding a stylist who doesn't leave me looking like Platinum Barbie has been quite a hard thing to do... but Nacar has won my heart and my hair! I found the service to be quite wonderful, everyone who I have met at the salon is very pleasant. I love that I never feel rushed and I get to actually enjoy my experience. While Jeffrey, himself is warm and inviting-Tim (other colorist) made my experience so bad that after a good coloring job, I can't bare to go back to the salon. Not only did Tim make it seem as though he was doing me a favor throughout my experiences there, by being in his presence, but he surreptitiously went behind my back and charged be for add-on procedures after we agreed not to do the add-ons. The culminating point of my disgust-is when: (1) Tim told me he would do a baby trim for a special price, of $20 to correct a bad haircut, and made it a full on haircut-charging me full price AND (2) after we discussed that he wouldn't blow it out and a shampoo girl graciously offered to blow my hair out for free, for practice ...Tim RAN in front of me (as I was walking to the counter to pay) and whispered to the front desk. I ended up with a bill for about $300 (all of the deals and freebies went out of the window in favor of Tim giving himself a better day's pay). He did a good job first few times however on my last visit my color was off and he left a dark orangish band in my hair. I had to go to another salon and they couldn't believe it! There should be an option for no stars. This salon has evolved into an utter disappointment. I received the second worst hair color of my life and the cut was none too impressive either. After speaking with Gail who may be the rudest receptionist/robot in the industry, my concerns were neither addressed by Jeff as requested or were they truly willing to take care of the issue. My appt that was a scheduled was move To another stylist without my request or permission. Second, since I was unaware if their 48 hour I'm miserable with your work policy, I was told by Gail there wasn't much they could do. This was after telling me they moved my appt (that was initially scheduled in November) to another stylist. I specifically asked to speak with Jeff as 1. I have been a client on and off (only bc of my location) for 10 years. I was a client of his at g spa and emerge. 2. I have recommended some of his most loyal clients. I figured he would give me that courtesy. Well he didn't Day's went by before he took a vacation and he did not call. I find it unprofessional for someone of his caliber and upsetting. I just went to another salon that is charging me upwards of 300.00 to correct this poor color job. They were not aware of this fiasco and asked me if I colored my hair from a box.....it is that bad. DO NOT EVER GO HERE! I work at a local spa and WAS only going to come here because of a personal recommendation. I work on clients all day long and thought it would be nice to treat myself for once. The receptionist is a poor excuse for anyone answering a telephone. When I first called to book the appointment, she was rude and very short. Poor thing is the reason why most receptionists have a bad rap. (Your typical airhead.) When I finally went to show up for my appointment which I ran 5 minutes late, the rude receptionist called to let my know the stylist I was to meet with, had now started his next client. I had an option of either waiting 1 hour or coming back later. HA HA HA HA.!!!! After only 5 minutes?? As a stylist myself, customer service is my main priority. Apparently, not at Jeffery Lyle. To turn someone away after 5 minutes is beyond rude. Poor little Suzie airheads way of handling the situation, was less than favorable as well. After driving all the way in to Newbury Street, why would I LEAVE and then drive back? I am happy to say the spa which I work would NEVER have handled a situation like this, which is why we are so busy and continue to receive BEST OF awards, year after year. I brought in pictures and was pleasantly surprised to see her look at them attentively and bring them out again when we were done! She really caters to the client which I love:) Balayage is a special technique of hair painting and it gives your hair a great natural sunkissed look. Today I had highlights put in my hair by Heather. Over the years I have had a number of stylists put dye in my hair, but I have to say this is the best experience I've yet to have. When I first arrived, Heather sat me down and we talked through my hair and what I had in mind. I told her how I like natural looking highlights and would like to lighten the shade of my hair. I told her that since I am in the midst of growing my hair out that I would like to have coloring that will make it look dynamic while it is in the awkward grow out stage. And after all of that she went to work. She quickly and efficiently yet meticulously added highlights by selecting small portions of my hair. She even pulled the dye out in stages instead of all at once - which gave the color a much more natural look. Wash, blow dry and a little straightener - and I loved the completed product. I've been going to Cortney at Jeffrey Lyle for about 18 months... I LOVE her, the salon, the whole experience. They use amazing products (the kind I feel too guilty about splurging on myself, like Kerastase). The service has been nothing short of excellent every time I've visited-- plus they always have the current issues of all my favorite magazines!! :) Cortney is fantastic-- I love getting haircuts but hate thinking about what might look good, so she always gives me her professional opinion and it always turns out lovely! She finishes her cuts with a fantastic blowout that lasts for several days. I've also had balayage at the salon twice, and have gotten TONS of compliments after. Cortney knows I can't spend a ton of money getting highlights touched up every month, so she does it so it can grow out and look nice over the course of a few months. Amazing! read more

If you are a blonde in need of great color, this is your place. Jeffrey does my color, and has always been nothing but wonderful. I am admittedly Extremely picky about my hair. I ended up using Jeffrey because I had been having my hair colored at another very expensive hair salon in Boston, and the way it was being colored just wasn't working out... it required way too much upkeep and seemed to lose its original sheen all too quickly after my appointments. Frustrated, i decided to try a new stylist. After some intensive internet digging, I found Jeffrey and decided to give him a try. Jeffrey is expensive, but well worth it. I asked for color that would help bring me back to my natural tone (dirty blonde). He listened and delivered. I love my hair now... Instead of appointments every 2 months to touch up ugly roots, he has blended it beautifully, so I have am able to go 6 months without highlights. Tim also has been cutting my hair (I have long hair), and I am always happy with his work. Another yelper mentioned that he was rude, which does not sound like Tim at all! My hair was mostly one length and boring, and she suddenly made it look shiny, perfectly layered and angled, and I get compliments all the time. Not much of a critic when it comes to salons but here it goes: When I go in my hair is long and grown out and when I leave it looks nice and I get compliments for weeks afterwards. They have a large selection of hair care products they all are french and appear very fancy. They offer beverages water, coffee, espresso, etc. When they're washing my hair it feels like they're giving me a head massage. I go ONLY for Shannon. Not only does she always make my hair look awesome, we also have hilarious conversations. ...I always leave smiling. All the hate on this salon is misplaced. read more

I had my hair colored by Tim in early 2010 and he did a great job. I decided to make an appointment with Tim again, but unfortunately the salon requires that you pay for a "finishing" i.e. blow-dry and I do not want to because it costs extra. At Vidal Sassoon, where I have also had my hair colored, they allow you to blow-dry your own hair. I find it unfortunate that Jeffrey Lyle salon will now be losing a client because of their "mandatory" blow-dry policy. I wanted to get my hair colored - not colored and a blow dry. In addition, I had provided Jeffrey Lyle Salon with my email address, thinking it would be used for personal communication, but I was instead sent a promotion - and they did not BCC people's e-mails - so not only did someone get my email (that states my name) - but now I have the entire client list of the salon due to the email they mistakenly sent out. BE AFRAID.....BE VERY AFRAID.......DO NOT dare cancel an appointment less than 24 hrs. in advance I mean not even 23hrs........ or Jeffrey will order his receptionist to charge your credit card 1/2 of some outrageous amount determined solely by Jeffrey Lyle!!! After visiting this salon for a hair cut, I am thankful to realize and appreciate the far superior service that other salons in the area achieve. The attitude is palpable here especially from the owner who has no regard for customer service and will resort to adversarial measures against clients who may express having difficulty. The experience I had with him was genuinely disheartening and I'm especially surprised at this given the nature of this business. Understanding people can run behind schedule, I waited almost a half hour into my appointment and the problem was that no one even came to update me nor did the stylist (or owner) care at all. OVER RATED not worth the WAIT If you want to play on Newbury Street you better know what you are doing and a few of the stylists at the Jeffrey Lyle salon should go back to hair dressing school. The best left and that was Heather Ward she was great at balayage and she listens to what you want. It looks like this salon only have Junior stylists left except Jeffrey the owner who does not know how to balayage Just foils !!! Then there is Tim the senior stylist who is not as good a colorist as Heather and doesn't like criticism both Tim or Jeffrey are not worth the wait!!! I was a client there for at least 3 years. I made it clear to Jeffrey Lyle my first visit I only care about the color. I don't care or get a style or a cut or even blow dry So if you don't hit the color with me ~ you fail as a colorist . I started with Jeffrey; once he put so many foils on my head I was way too blond. He quickly turned me over to Heather for future color. Jeffrey only does his favorite clients. This was fine as I loved my color with Heather. Heather listens and she looks at your hair. Last March I asked Heather to start lightening my hair again and she did exactly as I asked. She added some foils not allot and it looked awesome. Then a couple of months later she started balayaging around the hair line. I loved! Loved! Loved! my color. She hit the mark!!! When I went back on June 28, 2012 for my next appointment she was gone she left and went to another salon. A junior stylist was now to do my hair!!! I was not even asked who I would like to have continue doing my color they just said so and so is doing your color. This junior stylist did not ask me any questions just went in and mixed and applied the color. My hair did not come out the same it was more blended ~ no depth~ The next time I went back ( my bad) I had the junior stylist again this time she really messed up she darkened my hair to the color Jeffrey initially applied 3 + years back. She overlaid all the beautiful highlights Heather did. When I called mad as hell I was told either I have same person redo or wait weeks for Tim the only other balayager. When I went back to have Tim redo my hair , he said: well she followed everything that was written in the formula from Heather clearly she did not because I managed to get in touch with Heather and Heather told me she never used a gloss in my hair ever!! and stated a good hair dressers also evaluate your hair color and don't just rely on a piece of paper from the previous stylist as they could leave something out. Tim redid my hair and only started with the overlaid color he did not touch the roots as this was new growth I went home with my roots still showing . The next time I returned I had 8 weeks worth of roots . Tim did my hair a second time and I still had silver roots peeking out and his Balayage and color were nothing like I had back in May. Tim was not happy that I spoke with Heather and my showing him a picture of what my hair looked like prior to the junior stylist ruining it... He continued to back up the person that darkened my hair. Another review mentioned him as adding extras on and charging. Tim clearly is a snobby money grubber Now this is the latest,... . Tim is going out on medical leave and only keeping some of his clients. I had an appt for Oct 25 I was called the other day and told I would not have Tim again until November and the only person available is the same junior stylist that ruined my color . I said this is not an option!!!!! I am so done at the Jeffrey Lyle salon. I am going to another salon where allot of the stylists worked in salons in Italy, NY, Paris and have apprenticed under the owner for balayage ~ I am so excited to be going elsewhere. Jeffrey Lyle should move his business off Newbury St. They don't deserve the money they are charging for color. Send your juniors back to school Jeffrey and take some lessons to learn how to balayage. Both Jeffrey and Tim are so over rated and not worth the wait. In this economy dont throw your money away there are allot of excellent colorists out there . I am a true blond and have had almost white blond hair since birth, then I aged.... and thank goodness I found Jeffrey and have been going to him for YEARS!!! Let me tell you it is not an easy commute for me. It takes me about 1.5 hrs to get to his salon and with little kids it has been rough. Whenever I leave Jeffrey's salon I feel like a new woman (more like a model ;-). Cortney, Mae and Justine are the sweetest and I feel so comfortable going.You are there for awhile so it is only natural to look around at the other women getting their hair done too and what amazing cuts and colors are done by all there. I know most probably tend to dress up and do their make up when heading to Newbury (and why not right?) but as one that is rushing to get kids off to school and then head into Boston to sit and relax for a few hours, makeup and getting dressed up are just not on the agenda and thank goodness I never feel judged or intimidated like I have at other salons. Their salon is very discreetly situated above eye level and it is almost like you are entering a secret location that only few have been given the known address for and then you arrive and are so happy to be there. I have to be honest too- I cheated on him for about 6 months because it just wasn't feasible to make it in with babies and family stuff so I paid the same price for someone closer to me thinking they would do just as nice of a job right? WRONG... I left crying every time. My roots would be dark an inch off my scalp and any blond out there would feel my pain because the whole point why you spend all this money on and time getting foils done is so to cover up our natural hair color not expose it even more! Even my husband (who I thought never really paid attention to my hair) said to me "honey, I know you are a very busy woman/mom and you have been trying these other hair salons near us to make it easier on me and the kids but I will stay home with kids or pay a babysitter if you would please please just go back and have Jeffrey do your hair". Well needless to say I quickly picked up the phone and made an appointment with Jeffrey and never looked back!
