We enjoyed a full hookup site. This campground is in perfect proximity to all three historic spots as well to Busch Gardens which we went to with the two day pass to break up the large amount of history. This all worked out very well. The campground is very nice, and well taken care of. George is the head of maintenance and grounds, and he makes sure that things get done. The grass is cut, the staff will pickup your bagged trash if you set it out on your site by 9am, picnic tables with umbrellas was a nice addition and the gas grill at each campsite makes cooking easier for the campers. Staff will deliver ice and firewood to your campsite. The swimming pool with splash pad was a big hit with the grandchildren and made the choice of staying at this campground easy. They also have an activity building that features things to do like a basketball shooting game, tabletop shuffleboard, a pool table, giant checkers, various board games, and more. There is a laundry room adjacent. There is a kid jumping pillow, playground, hiking trails, disc golf, and lots more. WiFi was good and the grounds are secure. We enjoyed our stay here. The cost per night of our stay seemed a bit high at first sight but with the many amenities the cost smoothed out once on site. A couple negatives I have is that a $10.00 price tag for a small bag of firewood was very disappointing and over the top. Also, we made our reservations early to ensure locking in on the available site of our choice but then were forced to pay an additional $10 fee to guarantee that they didn't move us into a site that would not be our preferences. Even so, we would stay here again if we wanted to spend more time in this area.

I guess everyone has the right to give whatever rating they want, but sometimes I feel this is unfair for the business. We stayed a week there in July and had a great time. Due to the unusual hot weather we spent a lot of time at the pool. The pool seemed very clean and we didn't encounter anyone drinking alcohol. Even if someone did have a drink I wouldn't blame the RV park for their actions. We used our StarLink internet so I can't comment on the quality of the RV Park internet. I found out over the years that most KOA's and Good Sam parks do have connection problems when they are 100% occupied. The Staff was very friendly and helpful. Someone mentioned in another review that there was no garbage service. To me that is not big deal I just put my trash in the dumpster, just as I would do at a National or State Park. We used the RV Park's showers on the final day and they were very clean. Finally, we did see big beautiful Pine Cones on the ground and we didn't hear any report of injuries from getting struck in the head by a falling Pine Cones, as one reviewer worried about in their review. Overall if we ever return to Williamsburg we would definitely return to American Heritage RV Park.

Propane refill is available from the camp store. Miniature golf is available on-site. Let's just say they have it all. This is one of the highest-rated campgrounds on the Good Sam Club app - they are maintaining that high standard every single day. One of our top five campgrounds we have ever been to since beginning our camper journey in 2013. We will be back and hope for it to be often! Note: Close to local attractions such as Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Yorktown, Jamestown Settlement, and many other local attractions. Be sure to eat at Captain George's and get your seafood fill.

My best friend and I went to Pocahontas State Park a few weekends ago to do the Beaver Lake trail. This park is pretty big and they offer a variety of trails to explore. I love that you are able to walk, fish, bike, and even camp here. I just learned that if you are an REI member, you can take your receipt and use it as a payment to enter this park! It's usually $7 to enter with a car, but it was nice to be able to enter with a REI receipt. I've come twice this year and while the trees are not green yet, it's still a lovely park to explore. It's very family-friendly. There is a playground in the space. They also seem to have pools here. You can use All Trails to find a trail you want or ask the park ranger for recs on the map. They also have an information center and museum. If you live in the RVA area, I recommend checking out this park at least once.

Officially extinct in Virginia, but the prints say otherwise. Leave no trash. Pack out everything. This place is awesome/wonderful/beautiful!!! Don't mess it up.

Those premium spots are just clutch. The morning of call is great. They keep you informed of any changes, say to get setup, and make it super casual. When we arrived, we knew where to setup, knew that checking in wasn't the omg gotta do this moment, and then just had the no-pressure rush. Why I like this campground - it's all about the customer service. We visit the store - smiling, helpful face that loves the dog (always helps) and always attentive to any questions we may have. When folks were having issues I saw folks running to help, fixing issues, and saying hello to customers pulling in.... all at the same instance (looked exhausting - but it's also what sets this place apart). For those that have an issue with the train, I get it... however, at a certain point it becomes white noise and it even entertained our daughter as she watched the coal or passenger trains roll on through. Imo - not a big deal as it just adds to the character of the place... but I guess everyone is different. Keep it up Anvil.. see ya soon! Other than that, the grounds appeared to be well kept. The sites weren't too close together. Unfortunately I did have a hard time sleeping. In the middle of the night, people were grouped up and speaking very loudly directly behind our camper. I never had that happen before. Their conversation was very loud and kept waking me up. We left really early in the morning the next day so we weren't able to explore much more than that. It was a nice stop though.

Extended our stay with no problems even over a major holiday weekend they went out of their way to adjust for us to stay a few extra days. This park has a lot of long term campers, mostly in the back half of the park around the lake/pond, and up in the tree line. Our site, upfront just off the entry was a short walk to the pool with a nice shade tree. Mostly level packed dirt and gravel, had to use a couple blocks and manually adjust everything a little but it worked. 50 amp FHU in the back right corner with the utility connections fairly close to each other, and worked as they should. The front area appears to be where those staying short term set camp. We had folks around us just overnight on a couple nights. The other rigs were at least a couple spaces away that stayed more than a couple days. The park, at least where we were, was peaceful, clean and comfortable. During the week day very quiet and relaxed. We used the pool a few times, in the evenings and early mornings it was well maintained, clean and hardly used. The check in office/camp store/laundry is in the A frame by the pool as you enter the park. Its dated, but clean and serves its purpose. The park has RV, cabin and tent sites, each with a picnic table and fire ring and various types of hook ups. The campsites are clean and well-kept and are located right next to the beach. As a previous person noted, you must be affiliated with the DoD for access to the Dam Neck Annex - the Navy base the campground is located on. I have two critiques that prevent me from a five-star review. The first is that the campsites are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. We made our reservations in January for our August trip based on recommendations from friends and knowing the campground would fill up quickly. When we arrived on Tuesday afternoon at 2pm, after driving seven hours to get there, the only spots remaining were the two "shared" sites. Each was already half occupied by someone we didn't know. The space between the sites is no more than what you'd get in a parking lot (you share the same concrete pad). A reservation system that allowed you to reserve specific sites would fix this. The second critique is that there seems to be a lot of long-term campers. Not seasonal, but long term. These people have their RVs or travel trailers essentially parked in prime spots and they weren't there, at least during our visit. I get it it. If they pay, they get to stay. Perhaps, though, the number of those campers should be limited to allow families on vacation more opportunities to take advantage of the campground. Overall, though, it's a good campground. We may be back in the future. Knowing what I know now, though, we'll use a different strategy when we arrive.
