We got to rent the smaller boat this time and cruise up and down the Chickahominy River. The owners could not be nicer, they even let my partner borrow their kids fishing pole for the day! The home itself is perfect for 2-4 people. Everything you need, plus a fantastic view of the river from your porch and firepit. At low tide you can even bring lawn chairs down the stairs to the river and use the makeshift beach to relax.

Being outdoors and experiencing a screenless moment is rare. You can fish, place various games, make a fire, roast s'more's or weenies, swim in a pool, lay out in the sun, stare at the stars and watch the satellites and planes roll by, say hello to your neighbor, bask in some music, walk around pond and look at the beautiful wildlife.. the options are endless and what you make them. Grab your family and make it a weekend (or longer) they remember. Memorial weekend is so fun. They have candy bingo, karaoke, ice cream socials, pancake breakfasts, and more. The shop is perfect are for your needs if you forget something. They have the best colored shirts and awesome hats. Don't have a camper? No problem, rent a cabin :). You really can't go wrong coming out here. Experience life is a new way. I love this place and we plan to come every year regardless of where we live. We currently travel 4 hours to get here and it's worth it.

My family and I stayed here for four days in mid August in our travel trailer. It is a great…read morelocation! The prices are incredible. It's convenient to everything in Virginia Beach. The campsites are clean and well-kept and are located right next to the beach. As a previous person noted, you must be affiliated with the DoD for access to the Dam Neck Annex - the Navy base the campground is located on. I have two critiques that prevent me from a five-star review. The first is that the campsites are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. We made our reservations in January for our August trip based on recommendations from friends and knowing the campground would fill up quickly. When we arrived on Tuesday afternoon at 2pm, after driving seven hours to get there, the only spots remaining were the two "shared" sites. Each was already half occupied by someone we didn't know. The space between the sites is no more than what you'd get in a parking lot (you share the same concrete pad). A reservation system that allowed you to reserve specific sites would fix this. The second critique is that there seems to be a lot of long-term campers. Not seasonal, but long term. These people have their RVs or travel trailers essentially parked in prime spots and they weren't there, at least during our visit. I get it it. If they pay, they get to stay. Perhaps, though, the number of those campers should be limited to allow families on vacation more opportunities to take advantage of the campground. Overall, though, it's a good campground. We may be back in the future. Knowing what I know now, though, we'll use a different strategy when we arrive.

Built in the 70's, a true mom and pop management team is there to guide you in and come by on the regular to empty your provided trash can... No WiFi or cable but we had cell service for a hot spot and our WINEGARD (Dish) got excellent reception for TV... Fire pits are provided, just stone piled in a circle but it works... Very quiet and just off of I95 on some back roads... Mostly TT 5th wheels but a Class A pulled in while we were here... The electric and water are behind you while the sewer is ahead of you so depends on what lengths you brought to make sure you can reach them... There is a grassy area in the center to walk your puppies, don't forget your baggies to pick up after them... An overall very nice place to rest or stay a bit...

They offer nothing but a dick for a host and a free washer what's a three dollar dryer?

They asked us if we would consider moving because they had a family who wanted site 417 for a long-term rental. We inquired where they would like to move us. They said they wanted to move us to site 425. We said no. We had reserved a villa for our daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren and that our friends had reserved sites 410-415, 418 and that would put us in the middle of the park near no one. When we arrived at 1:30 Thursday for check in and there was someone in our site. I was sent to the office to speak to the manager. He said that the family would not be back at the campground until 3 to move their RV. Check out time is 11:00! They had not packed anything from around the camper to include a popup, grill, bikes and other items. The manager, Isaiah (I think) said that we had two choices we could plug in until they were packed up in site 412 or we could stay in 412 overnight. I decided to only plug in until they packed. At 3:15 I went back to the office to speak to the manager. I asked if he had a more definite time for them and told him that I was not pleased that they did not do more to ensure this family was moved out of the spot. They had two hours to figure it out and that they could have called us or something to let us know before arrival. I finally said, it was not his fault, but I was of course not happy. At this point I asked if I could at least get the key to the villa so I could get it ready or our daughter's family. This is where it gets crazy. He said, "No, ma'am check in is not until 3pm." I said, are you even serious? You are going to tell me about check in times! To which he replies, "Ma'am I understand that you are upset, but your tone is not acceptable and these are our rules. In addition, OUR POLICY IS THAT YOU RESERVE A SITE, NOT A PARTICULAR SITE and we reserve the right to put you in another site." So please be warned that you could be moved to any site they deem acceptable if they rent the site that you have reserved. I said, I would remember their reservation policy and his lack of professionalism and that our group of 8 campsites and 2 villas would look for Ed Allen's next year. He said, "I wish you would!" I felt like he could have let me have the key. He was at that point just being a jerk! At 3:30 a man and his friend pulled in with a fishing boat in tow. He moved his RV to site 427. Apparently, his great fishing trip was why he could not move his stuff out of the spot any earlier. They started quickly packing and were out by 4:00. We pulled into site minutes before our daughter arrived with our grandsons. The weekend went well. The villa was very clean and a great price. We have reserved the yurts in the past. The villa is the way to go with a full kitchen, bath, sitting area and television. As said at the beginning, we love Rockahock. Our experience was caused by a fellow camper and one bad management decision. Next time just give the key! It is called customer service.

There are huge potholes in all the roads, and many of the campsites flood ankle-deep with the slightest rain. Lots of the old fishing docks have fallen apart and into the water. The amenities are a joke. The pavilion roof is full of holes, the swimming pools tiles are falling off, the laundry machines smell like mold, the restaurant is permanently closed and all of the buildings need a good pressure washing. The majority of the staff are neither helpful nor very welcoming. They change the rules often and promise things that they never provide.
