Absolutely recommend. For years I used chemicals to cover my grey. I contacted Jenn because I wanted to explore Henna. We first met for a consultation. The consultation was around $40 and it was worth it. I got to ask all my questions and after that I chose to schedule an appointment. Henna is a process! Jenn gives you options and I chose to have the first step applied at the salon. After 1 hour she rinsed my hair and applied the second step (Indigo). I went home and rinsed my hair out after 3 hours. The color is rich and beautiful. I also got a hair cut with Jenn and I have very thick coarse hair. I am super happy with the cut. The service isn't cheap, but I'd rather be happy than saving $20. One more thing to notice: her salon is beautiful and the ambience is very relaxing. I have been getting my hair cut and colored by various people over the past several years with decent results, but I was really concerned about the toxicity of hair dyes and none of the stylists I was working with seemed to think there was a satisfactory alternative. Finally I did some research and found Jenn Archbold. She gave me the best cut I think I have had in years. I get so many compliments about my hair these days. It is a stretch for me to pay salon prices, but well worth it! You hair is one of your most important accessories, no? I think she has a special gift as she makes it look so effortless. She really understands wavy hair. What a gift! Perhaps because she has it herself. I can't remember all my life EVER having a stylist who could do justice to my natural waves. They just could cut it OK but they couldn't style it in a way that I would walk out feeling good about my hair. After getting a cut from Jenn, I do. She really listens to what you want and cares very much about satisfying her clients wishes. She will make suggestions when asked but she doesn't try to insert her own will over your hairstyle if you have a clear idea of what you like already. She didn't cut my bangs too short! (A sore spot with many stylists in the past.) Also, the dyes she uses are very low toxicity and don't leave my head with that chemical smell afterwards that I can't wait to wash off. She also does not push products on you at ALL. She can make suggestions for things to try, but there is no sales pressure to buy products. That is not her focus. Her focus is on giving you what you like. I was using some things like Moroccan oil and Bumble and Bumble defrizz which were leaving a coating on my hair. Something Jenn was able to pick up on right away after handling my hair. I was only getting very inconsistent results with them anyway so at her suggestion I stopped using them. I have extremely dry wavy hair. It can look HORRIFIC with out the right products - frizzy bent at weird angles, uncontrollable. I have read and used the "Curly Girl" system and that has helped but I tried the Devashon products developed by the author and they only worked for me for a limited time frame and then stopped giving nice smooth results. It has been so frustrating in the past, searching for the perfect conditioner and styling products. It has been like a lifelong quest for the holy grail. I have tried SO MANY things! In fact, through Jenn I found out that my very best styling product is olive oil. That's it. I put it on my hair after conditioning while it is wet and my hair has not looked so good, so consistently in years. I have never been happier with my hair. I strongly encourage you to give Jenn a try especially if you have had frustrations with your wavy or curly hair. read more

An update to say that my hair looked fantastic for five full months after my first haircut, and only started to look like it needed a trim halfway through the sixth. Jenn fit me in and once again, I had an amazing experience - soothing, grounding, and the exact cut I wanted. Definition with hardly any loss of length. A couple weeks ago, I got the itch to ditch my old mousy tresses for something new without frying my hair with nasty chemicals. I remember my best friend touting the conditioning benefits of henna, so I Googled "bay area henna" and came across Jenn's website. I could not be more pleased with my Florescence experience, from start to finish. Jenn graciously squeezed me in to her packed schedule. And, after going to her, I know why she is so in demand. Before my appointment, she was very communicative, answering my questions promptly and filling me in about what to expect. I brought in several different examples of red shades that I liked, and she helped me decide which shade was right for me. I was leaning toward the "safer" (less bold) option, while secretly wanting the more dramatic, rich shade. Jenn seemed to sense this, and she gently suggested that I go with the stronger color. As she worked, she explained every step of the process, from mixing the henna to application, so I could replicate the color at home, if I wanted! I have never before encountered a stylist suggesting that I could DIY what I am paying them to do. This is a real testament to Jenn's sincerity and artistry. No sales pitch, no bullshit. I love that. I wore the henna home and let it sit for 4 hours before shampooing and conditioning it off (takes several rounds of each). I woke up to radiant red hair that I couldn't stop admiring. It's soft and healthy and it glows. I feel like Jenn gave me the hair I should have been born with, no exaggeration! The salon itself could not be a more tranquil, mellow place. It's beautifully lit and doesn't have the strong chemical odor of most salons. Just clean and nice. Jenn is so pleasurable and easy to talk to and just a genuinely wonderful woman. Jennifer Brass is both an accomplished stylist AND visual artist. Her intelligence, creativity and artistic skill comes out of head straight through her fingers and scissors! I have wavey frizzy hair that was hard to manage before I started seeing her. Even though my hair grows fast, I can go for 10 weeks without a cut, and it still falls beautifully because Jennifer has carefully cut with the natural curl of my hair. She listens carefully, and approaches her work with great attention and skill. Even though this salon is rated "pricey" I think I save money because my hair is cut so well with my natural curl that I can go longer between cuts. I don't have to wash or restyle my hair for 4 days after I see her, it just falls in place when I get out of bed. Truly amazing. read more

Jennifer at Florescence is the best colorist I have ever been to. She is committed to non toxic hair color and has found an ammonia free product that is superior to other products. She is always careful to evaluate what my needs each time I come in. She covers my gray, and in the past, I have had trouble with other colorists either getting my hair too dark or with it turning red after awhile. I do not have those problems when Jennifer colors my hair. Her salon is so relaxing and peaceful. My time is extremely important to me, and her salon is one place I don't mind spending time in. I learned about Florescence from the Chinook Book. I recently moved to Oakland so I was in search of a new salon. I have always wanted to try a salon that uses organic and non-toxic products. After reviewing the Florescence Designs website I knew I should schedule an appointment. For my first visit I received a haircut from Jenn Archibold. My hair is wavy curly. She really takes the time to consider her client's natural hair and face shape. I didn't want a drastic change to the current cut but Jenn was able to add her own flair to it. My second visit was for organic highlights. I already had some blonde highlights from when I was living in NYC, so Jenn used 2 colors: a similar blonde and a warm copper blonde. The highlights look great on my brown hair and it doesn't feel like I had any chemical treatment which is damaging. Moreover, Jenn provides a lovely, calm atmosphere. Her salon is clean and smells wonderful. She is also a great person to talk to - I feel like she's a friend! I even purchased a pair of earrings she designed. She has beautiful jewelry. I will be returning in May for a trim and deep conditioning treatment and am looking forward to it! read more

I'm so pleased that I found Jenn. I have wanted to have henna professionally applied for years but finding a place is almost impossible. I don't know why henna is not used more in salons. With chemical dyes, my hair would grow out brittle and orange colored. It looked great in the beginning but over time, it would look dull and damaged. With henna, my hair is thicker and shinier than ever! I don't get the brittle, orange ends anymore. Henna is a little more work than chemical coloring BUT it's worth it. My hair feels healthier and is healthier. Jenn is very knowledgeable and experienced with henna and mixes the colors to your taste perfectly. I used to be afraid to get my hair cut. (So did my sister, actually-- childhood trauma...) In fact, before I found Jenn, I had been cutting my own hair for a while. Here's what I knew about her going in: she can cut curly hair; she uses organic products; and people like her. Jennifer Brass is amazing!! She has given me the two best haircuts of my entire life (I'm 30) and she found ways to bring out my face that I could never have imagined. She first cut my hair (found her through Yelp actually) because I was chopping it for locks of love. She took tons of time to ask me questions about my personal style, work, and lifestyle so that she could make sure my haircut fit it. She took a lot of time to really make sure the cut was what I wanted, even doing a second version when I realized I had wanted to go a couple of inches shorter. I was blown away by how amazing it looked. This was only surpassed by my second haircut when I decided to go shorter. Jennifer Brass knew my hair. She knew which way certain locks would fall and what/how to cut them so it would be just right. It was the best hair cut I have ever had in my life and made me look elegant and pretty in an incredible way that again, I could never have imagined was possible. A month ago, Jenn Archibold performed wonders on my hair. She applied the two-step henna-indigo process to my previously chemically colored, curly, thin, greying, mousy, medium brown hair. I went for broke and asked for the darkest black, short of blue-black, and sure enough, I got it. My hair has never been richer in color, fuller, stronger or shinier (henna fills the cuticle - so much so that my curly hair lays straighter and does not frizz in the fog !) It is permanent so I only need to really maintain new growth. I swim 3 times a week in a saline and chlorine pool (with a cap) and the henna-indigo color has stayed true, fading slightly to darkest brown, despite the minerals or chemicals. I have always had problem hair which I again wanted to grow long to keep the frizz down. Last week, I went back to Jenn and she gave me a short bob haircut which looks great worn curly or straight. I look and feel like new: Florescence has been a rejuvenating natural mini-spa experience. And only all-natural henna-indigo will color my hair and brows from now on. Thank you Jenn ! . read more

I found Florescence trolling the internet for a salon that offers henna services. I wanted to be as natural as possible and I was not ready to become grey. Just went here for the first time today. I have been using henna on my hair for about four years but usually do it myself. My hair is a little too long for me to manage on my own now and the people I am living with weren't really comfortable with me dyeing my hair in the bathroom so I searched for a place to get my hair dyed naturally. I figured if anywhere would have somewhere to fit the bill it would be Berkeley, and I was right. This was an all around great experience. The salon is small and clean and Jenn played soothing music. She quickly set to work dyeing my hair and then sat me under the dryer to let the color set a bit. This may have been my favorite part. Instead of an uncomfortable drying chair like at most salons, the chair here is a really comfortable chair. Weird thing to focus on but if I am going to cook my hair for 45 minutes, I like being comfortable. After that she sent me home with my hair still wrapped up and told me to let is sit for a couple more hours for the best color. I It is all washed and dry now and is such a beautiful color, couldn't be happier. read more

She has been cutting my hair and giving it color using henna for many, many years--I've lost track of how many...can it be close to 20?--and I love her always warm, calm, and supportive presence. The most important feature of her salon, for me, is that it is free of toxic and heavily scented products. In addition, the salon has a meditative ambience that is full of natural light, soothing music, and a lovely view of a courtyard green with plants. I love Jenn and Florescence. I'm severely allergic to ppd, a chemical found even in "organic" hair dye in small amounts, and so I stopped trying to cover my grays a while ago. Then I found out about Florescence from the Chinook Book, and decided to try it out for a haircut. Jenn suggested that I try coloring my hair with henna and indigo. There are no chemicals in the potion she whips up. I decided to try it even though I didn't feel optimistic given my previous coloring experiences. Surprise - it works beautifully! It covered my grays, made my hair super shiny, and looks natural and rich. My haircuts have also been great - Jenn really listens, and cuts my hair exactly the way I want it.
