On a Route 66 road trip we stopped in to Jerry's. It's a small cafe filled with friendly locals and travelers and wonderful staff. Had to try some of their basics. I had a cheese enchilada, refried beans & rice. Had a side of chips & salsa. Husband had Jerry's open-faced burger with red and green chili. Both meals came with sopapillas. Everything was fabulous! Of course I found it through my fellow yelpers I was looking for fry bread and this place popped up Decided to come because it has good reviews. Saw a guy eating a sopapilla outside said it was good and there were several people outside waiting so we were like ok it's gonna be good. Ordered the Sopapilia covered in red sauce because it was a popular choice. Sadly, I was disappointed. I think it would have been good by itself no sauce. Just a sopapilla by itself. In sauce was too much. The red sauce did not taste homemade. If it is I'm sorry but it just wasn't my cup of tea. The kids drummettes were fried and tasty. Other than that it was just another diner. We did meet others who said they frequent but knowing true Mexican food, it's a no go for me. Service was ok. Ambiance Diner feel. So much food! Every local we spoke to, even hotel staff said to go to Jerry's for breakfast. The service was outstanding and the restaurant was eclectic and old but very clean. I asked the waitress which was smaller the sopaipilla or the breakfast burrito? She said the sopaipilla. Holy moly. It was stuffed with thick bacon, hash browns, eggs and smothered in red and green salsa (they call it Christmas salsa). I ended up opening it and eating the inside because it was seriously enough for 2 people. Hubs had the Eye Opener. Two eggs, Christmas salsa, hash browns and bean, served with sopaipilla. This very local joint has an old time ambiance: long and narrow with two aisles running down the sides with booth seating, and clientele where I believe I was the only passer-through in the joint. I opted for a chili relleno with a side salad. The salad was larger than usual for a side and all the ingredients were fresh and crispy. Very satisfying. The chili relleno had a proper fluffy egg coating and a cheese filling. Red and green sauces are offered and you can choose "Christmas," their charming term for both. (See picture). Service was friendly and prompt. A great local spot and on a freezing cold night there was no wait but every table was full for most of the time I was there. Everything was so CLEAN. When you look over to the carousel tray holding condiments and see the salt and pepper shakers not with a sticky buildup of with food particles is a plus in my opinion. Today was the second time we have gone to this cafe for breakfast. The service absolutely amazing, with the hostess seating you right away and getting your drinks, the wait staff getting your order and explaining any options on the menu to the cook staff putting out the best food. Passing through Gallup and checked Yelp for a recommendation and Jerry's popped up. As other reviewers have stated, this is a very small local's restaurant with limited seating. When we arrived there were groups of people waiting outside, however, we were lucky to be seated right away since there were only two of us. We noticed for such a small place, they had several staff members and they were all very busy serving or bussing. Yes. It is sort of a hole in the wall and could use some upgrading aesthetic wise but that is the charm of Jerry's Cafe. But, you are a little cramped. We were sat right next to the kitchen, restroom and dish carts, etc. We were immediately greeted by a nice young lady who brought us water and our server Janelle quickly arrived and brought menus. Janelle was super friendly with a huge smile on her face. She never left us waiting for service. We were both super hungry so she recommended Miguel's Delight which came with a chili relleno, chicken enchilada smothered with red chile and a crisp beef taco. We've been here several times as we drive through town. If we hit it right (they're closed on Sundays and the line can get very long at prime time), we try to stop here whenever we can. The place is not that large and there are not many tables -- most of them are 2-4 person booths. I've had several items off the menu over the years, but the staple for me now is the bowl of chile (green) with a sopapilla. That said, you can't go wrong with the Jerry's Special, which has been served the same way since 1976 (hamburger steak smothered in green chile and cheese with sopapilla, beans and rice). Came here as a party of four around 3ish, and waited about ten minutes. It's a small space but not too noisy, and looks clean and nice inside. It's fun to see the different pictures and stuff hanging from the walls while you wait. We ordered the Jerry's special, and 3 Combination #1 plates, with a beef enchilada and cheese enchilada on different plates, and the red and green sauces on the side. We also got chips and salsa to start off with. The salsa was delicious and refreshing, but just a little bit of spice. As someone who loves spicy food, it was pretty tolerable, the more you ate the spicier it got! The waitress said that the spice of the salsas differ everyday, and the red sauce was delicious and a little spicy (2/5). The tamale was super yummy, meat was tender and masa was the perfect ratio of not too much or too little, the sopapillas were amazing (especially since it came with every meal), the salsa from the chips was refreshing and spicy. The toastado just came with beans and toppings (lettuce and tomato), but with some salsa it was good. The enchiladas were good, some of the tortillas were still a little crunchy, but the meat inside was great. Got the sauces on the side to try them, and ended up flooding it with the red salsa which was pretty good. Definitely worth a stop, it's a cute little family owned restaurant that's almost a hole in the wall if you're not a local. However it seems to be always busy, ofcourse they had only a maximum of about 20 booths/tables, so that doesn't help the waiting. read more

I'm so glad we were able to stop in for a meal at Jerry's during our route 66 trip. I saw a lotttttt of shit online about how good the food is here and I now feel qualified to assert that it is not misinformation. We came in for breakfast at around 9 or 9:30 and I'm glad that there was a table available. The service was great. I couldn't pass up the stuffed sopaipilla and their menu includes a VEGETARIAN OPTION with a garden burger!!! I was so excited to see this! Vegetarians want to try stuffed sopaipillas too! It was INCREDIBLE. It was absolutely slathered with chili and cheese and stuffed with egg, cheese, and garden burger. It was so good. Reflecting on it now is killing me. The portion was massive and there was no way I could even come close to putting that whole thing down. They replaced the coffee about every second. The prices were extremely reasonable. Jerry's Mexican American Food Café This place was a great find. A small locals spot. Pretty sure we were the only travelers there that night, and the place was packed, but we were seated fairly quickly. Jerry's starts you out with the traditional chips and 3 salsas. All were addicting. My wife ordered the enchilada, topped with an egg over easy. It came with rice, beans and salad plus she ordered a taquito as a side. That turned out to be enough for at least two people. Everything on her plate looked to be made from scratch and authentic Mexican food, far removed from anything one might end up with from Taco Bell. She said everything on her plate was delicious. I ordered a combination plate that included a chili relleno, a chicken enchilada, a taco carne, that came with rice and beans (I think that might be standard with every plate of Mexican food). Again the portions were generous nearly enough to feed a family and everything was most tasty. But we didn't stop there. Since we were in New Mexico we had to once again have an order of sopapillas with honey. Hot and fresh out of the oven, and each about the side of a small loaf of bread. We only managed to eat two of the three on the plate. They were outstanding but we had maxed out on consumption for the day. Loretta ordered Cherelle's Choice. A Sopaipilla Stuffed with Carnitas, Grilled Tomatoes, Onions, and Jalapeños with Red and Green Hone Made Chili Sauce. Very Tasty. I ordered The House Made Chili Rellenos Sauced as they say, Christmas Style with Beens & Rice and a Sopaipilla with Honey. That's Red And Green sauce Both. Excellent For Sure. I also had to try A Ground Beef Hard Shell Taco. Also Tasty. All in all Excellent Food and Service. Prices are fair and portions are Filling. I'll be back for more next time I'm in Gallup. read more
