Everything is great! Fast service even though it's busy today and everyone here has a smile.. food is great
We arrived around 8 pm. We were immediately shown to a booth for 2+. My husband asked me to slide over because he couldn't sit across from me as there was a huge hole/rip in the seat. They rushed us to order saying the kitchen was closing. The internet says they are open until 9pm. Our meal came out very quickly . It was tasty. There was a baby somewhere across the room wailing and crying the entire time. Then the clean up crew began to sweep raising dust as we were dining then a woman came with a large bucket full of vile smelling disinfectant. My husband began gagging as he attempted to drink his green chili stew. We asked the sweeper if she could wait until we were through dining. She acquiesced then the mopping lady began coming closer and closer. We asked her to wait. We were sassed and told that they had closed 40 minutes ago! She said everyone wanted to go home. We had just driven non-stop from Pasadena, California. We were tired and hungry and wanted to get back to our hotel as well.customers are not their priority!
The red chili sauce was smoky and flavorful. The ground beef inside the stuffed sopapilla could use more seasoning. Pleasant place but doesn't stand out from the many restaurants in this town serving a similar menu.
We came here together and we left together. That is what is so miraculous about this establishment.. it is unifying.
So we were passing through Route 66 and was i pressed by how many people were here at Don Diego's so we decided to stop in. My son enjoyed his shredded beef chimichanga, my wife her Ribeye and enchilada and my steak fajitas were plentiful and tasty. I was surprised though that they only came with some shredded lettuce that looked like it was about to expire and some salsa with a few beans inside it. It did the job but I didn't appreciate being rushed out mid meal. It wasn't yet closing time, and I understand people want to go home on time but I feel a restaurant should go or it's Opening time. Best part of the meal was meeting some great Native American patrons from the Zuni tribe. They even offered us some of their desert they brought in to celebrate a birthday. Rice and Beans should go with Fajitas yo! I guess I could have spoke up and ordered it on the side. 3.5 Stars
We have been in town several days and the family wanted Mexican food. After looking at the options in the Gallup area we settled on Don Diego's. Now I am fully aware that Mexican food is very different in California, the Southwest and Texas. Being from California I'm pretty spoiled as to great Mexican food. Looking at the menu it looked ok. Some decent options. I settled on the fish tacos. With beans and rice. The food came pretty quickly and the service was very pleasant. The food looked ok. But that's kinda where it ends. The rice was pretty bad. Way too much tomato flavor and zero seasoning. The beans are not refried. So maybe Southwest style is whole beans? Idk. But they were just so so. The fish tacos had the weirdest taste as I took my first bite. I'm still not sure what it was. They do what looks like a grilled fillet type of fish taco. So I think that's a nice touch. Bcz I've had fried fish tacos and they are really filling. Idk maybe all the flavor's just didn't jive. But I ate it all. Coming away I thought meh it was all right. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. The staff is nice. However I just don't think the food was good. I'm sure there's better places in Gallup.
Never had sopaipilla before or know what it is. I googled it first. The images and descriptions didn't look like the massive beast that was served. This resembled more of a wet burrito with a thicker tortillas. It was loaded with filling: ground beef, guac, beans, cheese and sauce. It wasn't bad. It's big enough to feed 2 people. They gave free chips and salsa for the table. Service was good and fast.

Passing through Gallup for the evening and we had to have some Mexican food. Using Yelp we found Don Diego's and the reviews were spot on. We went at 4:15 pm and almost the whole restaurant was full. We enjoyed the chicken and beef enchiladas and the kids had grilled cheese and chicken tenders. Friendly, fast service.
Good food, nice staff, clean environment. Positive experience. Had been wanting fish. Got grilled catfish and it was a nice change of pace.
Our go to place while traveling on I-40 once we cross into New Mexico for Mexican food (breakfast, lunch or dinner). We have never been disappointed with anything we have ordered here. Everything is great whether you take out or eat in. Food is great, prices good and staff friendly and attentive. Can't wait to travel through Gallup again to stop again! read more

Alex was so gracious and a pleasure to meet .House margarita was good and our meal was very good and portions generous ! The red chile was so flavorful a bit of bite but not painful . The vibe was comfortable and very inviting . Definitely will be back when Gallup ! Finally we have a go to place who has margarita's!!0 Chips and salsa was tasty we left happy ! read more

I was really disappointed with the tacos I ordered. The hard shells were completely soggy by the time I got them, which made them fall apart and difficult to eat. On top of that, the tacos had almost no flavor. There didn't seem to be any seasoning on the meat, and there was no salsa included at all. Without any seasoning or sauce, the tacos tasted very bland. I was expecting something with at least a little flavor, but unfortunately this meal was very underwhelming. read more

We usually go to Jerry's for NM chili but found out Don Diego's is owned by the same family so my favorite stuffed sopaipilla was available here too. Larger restaurant so wait to be seated! read more

Always stop at this delightful Mexican restaurant on Route 66 when traveling through Gallup. Enjoy their huevos rancheros very much. Service is always friendly and professional, and the food is tasty. read more

First time eating here and it did NOT disappoint. I think this might be my favorite New Mexican food joint. I also appreciated the staff taking the empty plates from the table promptly. Thank you for the pitcher to refill the ice tea. Definitely recommend you check it out. read more

Don Diego's one of the Mexican staples here in Gallup NM. This place is always busy anytime of the day. We came here for dinner, and it's pretty good. Lots of people here food was quick to the table from the time we ordered. Customer service was ok during the busy times. Water was kept full and we were checked on time to time. Would come here again and try more dishes they serve here. read more

Wow! Driving thru from CO to CA. Well worth the stop! Best food/service. Had stuffed sopapilla with green sauce. Great flavor, fresh ingredients, and served with a smile. read more

Wow. I stopped off of the freeway to see Gallup and to have lunch. I wanted Mexican or Western food. Happened past Don Diego's. The parking lot was nearly full so I squeezed in too. What a great decision. The service was fast and friendly and the food delicious. A truly great first time experience. . I had both colors of salsa. #Yum read more

The food was delicious! Our food came out right away and our server was very nice and polite. We were greeted as we were seated and got our drinks out to us quick. Only problem was we went during rush hour so the place was pretty much packed. I suggest going at an earlier time or waiting a little longer in the evening. read more

The first time I ate here, in April 2017, and I really hated it . I ordered Chile Rellenos, and they were not great. Tonight , I had the smothered ( red and green = Christmas ) carne adovada burrito and it was amazing !! So I have changed my opinion of this place. Service was excellent! I only give 4 stars because the water glass had a lipstick stain, and because the rellenos are not good here. I now know what to order here. read more

Here is a fine example of what true New Mexican food is supposed to be. The aromas of the red chilies and slow roasted meats arose from my well plated Carne Adovada special. The slow roasted pulled pork was tender and delicately seasoned with regional red chilies and spices. The vibrant red sauce simmered the pork into a dish that came to an end too soon. My dining companions enjoyed some awesome burritos. Again, the meat was cooked low and slow and the chili sauces well executed. The green chili sauce had a few peals sneak through that should have been caught in the kitchen. The cheese was typical New Mexican style. Not a white Mexican cheese but instead a medium cheddar. Generous portions all around. Salsa and chips come with the meal. The chips are pretty thick and crispy. Not greasy or overcooked with great body. The salsa is Christmas in a dish. Bright red stewed tomatoes speckled with green chilies, onion, and garlic. Service is also good and family style. Drinks stayed full. read more
