I was really disappointed with the tacos I ordered. The hard shells were completely soggy by the time I got them, which made them fall apart and difficult to eat. On top of that, the tacos had almost no flavor. There didn't seem to be any seasoning on the meat, and there was no salsa included at all. Without any seasoning or sauce, the tacos tasted very bland. We arrived around 8 pm. We were immediately shown to a booth for 2+. My husband asked me to slide over because he couldn't sit across from me as there was a huge hole/rip in the seat. They rushed us to order saying the kitchen was closing. The internet says they are open until 9pm. Our meal came out very quickly . It was tasty. There was a baby somewhere across the room wailing and crying the entire time. Then the clean up crew began to sweep raising dust as we were dining then a woman came with a large bucket full of vile smelling disinfectant. My husband began gagging as he attempted to drink his green chili stew. We asked the sweeper if she could wait until we were through dining. She acquiesced then the mopping lady began coming closer and closer. We asked her to wait. We were sassed and told that they had closed 40 minutes ago! She said everyone wanted to go home. Everything started out ok. We were seated pretty fast. Server we had was so unprofessional. Not once did she come check on us. Not only did she get our order wrong but she also brought us old stale sopapillas and the manager/owner an attitude because we asked her to take it off since we couldn't eat it. When we finally got her attention we asked for a manager. She then again did not acknowledge us or apologize or ask why. So we had to ask another server for the manager and finally the manager came to us. I have never met an owner or manager whatever she is that was so RUDE! I'm so shocked on her she reacted and treated us. Definitely will not be coming back here. Jerry's cafe is 100 times better and they never treat their customers the way this person treated us. We have been in town several days and the family wanted Mexican food. After looking at the options in the Gallup area we settled on Don Diego's. Now I am fully aware that Mexican food is very different in California, the Southwest and Texas. Being from California I'm pretty spoiled as to great Mexican food. Looking at the menu it looked ok. Some decent options. I settled on the fish tacos. With beans and rice. The food came pretty quickly and the service was very pleasant. The food looked ok. But that's kinda where it ends. The rice was pretty bad. Way too much tomato flavor and zero seasoning. The beans are not refried. So maybe Southwest style is whole beans? Idk. But they were just so so. The fish tacos had the weirdest taste as I took my first bite. I'm still not sure what it was. They do what looks like a grilled fillet type of fish taco. So I think that's a nice touch. Bcz I've had fried fish tacos and they are really filling. Idk maybe all the flavor's just didn't jive. But I ate it all. Coming away I thought meh it was all right. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. The staff is nice. However I just don't think the food was good. I'm sure there's better places in Gallup. read more

So we were passing through Route 66 and was i pressed by how many people were here at Don Diego's so we decided to stop in. My son enjoyed his shredded beef chimichanga, my wife her Ribeye and enchilada and my steak fajitas were plentiful and tasty. I was surprised though that they only came with some shredded lettuce that looked like it was about to expire and some salsa with a few beans inside it. It did the job but I didn't appreciate being rushed out mid meal. It wasn't yet closing time, and I understand people want to go home on time but I feel a restaurant should go or it's Opening time. Best part of the meal was meeting some great Native American patrons from the Zuni tribe. They even offered us some of their desert they brought in to celebrate a birthday. Don Diego's one of the Mexican staples here in Gallup NM. This place is always busy anytime of the day. We came here for dinner, and it's pretty good. Lots of people here food was quick to the table from the time we ordered. Customer service was ok during the busy times. Water was kept full and we were checked on time to time. Here is a fine example of what true New Mexican food is supposed to be. The aromas of the red chilies and slow roasted meats arose from my well plated Carne Adovada special. The slow roasted pulled pork was tender and delicately seasoned with regional red chilies and spices. The vibrant red sauce simmered the pork into a dish that came to an end too soon. My dining companions enjoyed some awesome burritos. Again, the meat was cooked low and slow and the chili sauces well executed. The green chili sauce had a few peals sneak through that should have been caught in the kitchen. The cheese was typical New Mexican style. Not a white Mexican cheese but instead a medium cheddar. Generous portions all around. Salsa and chips come with the meal. The chips are pretty thick and crispy. Not greasy or overcooked with great body. The salsa is Christmas in a dish. Bright red stewed tomatoes speckled with green chilies, onion, and garlic. Service is also good and family style. Drinks stayed full. read more

The sheepherder is my favorite, with green chili. My husband gets the same or a stuffed soapapilla with green & red chili (Christmas). If you get chili on top of your order, it will be smothered in it. As a local, I think the green chili is consistently medium, and I always get it. But if you aren't sure about the heat, just ask for the chili on the side. read more
