When my daughter was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 12, we interviewed 1/2 dozen doctors before choosing Dr. Kim. What drew us to him was his professional demeanor yet personable bedside manner. He is impeccable is his appearance and is healthy and fit. (Some of the other doctors we interviewed were not, I mean, if you can't take care of yourself, how can you take care of others?) We were impressed by his knowledge, his gentleness and his patience. He answered my barrage of questions and put us at ease. When the time came for my daughter's surgery, he quelled our nerves and we felt completely confident in his expertise. Without going into too much detail, the surgery went great, my daughter's back is beautifully aligned and straight, and her stitches looked like they were made with a sewing machine, perfect. My daughter is now healed, almost 22 and has been discharged from Dr. Kim's care, but we still visit him regularly and thank him for his contribution to our daughter's health! She and Dr. Kim are BFFs! And he will always have a special place in our hearts! And yes, he always has her back!! I brag about Dr. Kim to everyone I know. I trust him implicitly. Dr. Miller had no interest in viewing the MRI that I had done for the visit, telling me "I don't need to see that'. He exited the room and left me waiting for 10 minutes. I had to look for someone to explain to me what was going on. I was told by the initial attending nurse that Dr. Miller was "organizing" xrays. I informed her that I already had xrays done at the hospital. The xray tech came in next and ushered me into the xray room. I went back to the consult room. Dr Miller re-entered the room, complaining about "their system being slow". This is a multi million dollar, private equity ortho clinic and your system is slow? He then gave me a cortisone shot and walked out. Everything about this place is unprofessional. Dr. Miller is way past his retirement date.

Prior to surgery, the staff called and had me complete paperwork on their website, as well as going…read moreover anticipated costs. They were able to provide what insurance covered and what I was responsible for. Upon arrival, the waiting room was about half filled but those were people waiting on their loved ones. After about ten minutes, I pre-registered and was called to the back within five minutes of completing the registration. The nurse, Sunny, was very friendly that prepped for the surgery. She was helpful in answering questions and ensuring that I was comfortable. The anesthesiologist, Dr. Handel, was nice and readily available to answer my questions. The OR nurse and nurse anesthetist were cheerful and nice. I've forgotten their names. I have a few complaints. The doctor arrived forty-five minutes or more after the scheduled surgery time. This seemed to be normal and none of the staff was surprised. I get it that things can happen, but to be late for surgery on a regular isn't a good thing. The doctor never disclosed this, but I found out that he has an interest in this surgery center and profits off of the money made there. I was asked to sign a form saying that I knew and understood this. This should have been disclosed well before the day of the surgery. After the surgery, the doctor never came out to tell the family how the surgery went nor did he provide a follow up appointment or any information. The recovery room nurse had the family member sign discharge papers and seemed baffled as to why the doctor had not spoken to the family nor provided a follow up appointment. This caused some confusion and the family was basically left to do what they thought would be best in care upon arrival at home. It would also have been nice for staff to show the patient how to use the crutches and walker, as far as shifting weight to the good leg rather than the bad leg for climbing steps, getting up from a seated position, etc.

Most staff were kind. In particular, Crystal, thoughtfully moved him to a quiet room for less stimulation. However, after multiple attempts to fabricate a physical ailment for a healthy man, the Anesthesiologist cancelled the scheduled surgery at 2:30pm, after he was fully prepped for surgery and had been there since 10:30am. This was cruel for the Autistic patient and mortifying for the surgeon who had booked the surgery at Boulders. Thankfully, the hand surgery took place at CJW the next day under a compassionate and knowledgeable anesthesiologist. Further training on disabilities and human rights is needed. UPDATE: Spoke with Bridget Roque, Boulders' Administrator "Per our guidelines if there is a behavioral component that we feel like the hospital is a better setting for we will cancel the procedure. We will review and cancel because we're not connected to a hospital and want him and our providers to be safe. We don't have that high acuity level of special-needs and we don't have that high-level training here. I apologize, and I wish it were communicated sooner and without looking for other excuses, but it's just the reality of what we can provide and how much training we can expect of our providers." They do not wish to pursue further training on disabilities.

Dr Miller needs to retire. He barely looked at my record while I was in the office. Asked me why I…read morewas there. "MRI results" he said under his breath. He told me exactly what I read on the portal. I have a torn meniscus and ruptured Baker's Cyst. He said the kind of tear I have cannot be repaired w/surgery. He said they don't do anything with Bakers cysts. He could prescribe me something for inflammation. He didn't tell me why he couldn't do surgery on this kind of tear. He said come back in 4-6 weeks if needed. He prescribed a medication I already have. He didn't even tell me what he was prescribing. Long story short, I was in pain from July 3rd to August 7th. My left knee has been swollen for a month with a lot of pain. That's a long time to deal with pain. Before I left I asked what should I do, "just keep doing what I'm doing". He replied "yes". He didn't ask what that was. Last I was told by Jackson the PA was go ahead and put weight on it. Dr. Miller basically left me to deal with the pain for another month or more. I went to another Dr the next day and he drained my knee, pulled a lot of fluid off and gave me a cortisone shot. The pain left almost immediately. I would love to get a refund on my co-pay, as what David Miller did could have been done over the phone. I can provide a more in depth history of my care from OrthoVA regarding my knees if needed. Miller really needs to go back to his roots, lose the arrogance, and treat everyone with respect and as a unique person, not a number. I'll never recommend him to anyone. I will make it a point to tell all not to see him. I would have preferred Dr. Nedeff but due to severe pain went with the first available appointment. BIG MISTAKE!

The room has so many patients that the aisles are too narrow for a walker (many of the surgical patients are using walkers) to maneuver. The wait to see your doctor is extremely long. I find the office staff unresponsive to phone calls (when it is possible to get through to the receptionist). Requests for prescriptions take a minimum of 24 hours to review and are accepted only Monday through Thursday. OrthoVirginia is not patient oriented. It is a orthopedic factory. If you don't mind inefficiency and long waits, the medical staff seems quite competent.
