I thought that was odd. Then, the Queer Resource Center was also to support ALL genders, except biological men. Seemed redundant and I can't imagine how much these centers cost to maintain. The folder also included a brochure about the school. They boasted a low "white" population, apparently seeing this as a selling feature! Crazy. The Portland population is about 70% white, yet PCC's white population is only 56%. They don't seem to value equal representation anymore.

I was looking at their PhD program quite seriously and trying to decide between this and another…read moreprogram. I had a difficult time calculating total cost with various fees, especially lab fees. Because the total cost isn't easily transparent, I did some deep research and came to the conclusion that the high lab cost would substantially increase the price of the program beyond the base cost. The admissions individual was very responsive until an email asking for verification if the cost based on my research was accurate because I would likely be priced out if so. Communication abruptly stopped at that point. This lack of follow through gives the college an unprofessional and a very "for profit" vibe. I also had concerns for the application of a PhD in integrative health, which I spoke to friends in the medical field about. Our discussions added to my hesitancy to spend a large chunk of time and money on an ambiguous degree. I may have considered getting a certificate here and was going to ask about it in a follow up but I guess they decided that I wasn't a big enough money maker to justify their time.

I have 5 degrees and this is the best college that I've attended. Sylvania had some awesome intermediate ballet classes a few years ago that they don't offer anymore, so never mind the praise I would have given. Elective course selection very limited. Night classes very limited. This despite the tuition being on the high side for a community college. Administratively speaking, they kind of just suck. A lot of red tape and fees and you have to twist someone's arm to get help. Last straw for me was not knowing I owed for a noncredit course I never attended and didn't know I was enrolled in at all. I looked into it years later and when I tried to get help to get the fee removed, they not only didn't help but they forwarded me to collections for a class I didn't even know I was enrolled in. To clarify, I had no idea I was enrolled in a noncredit course. I only discovered it at all because I looked into enrolling again later and was completely confused as to why I owed money. It wasn't even simple figuring out why I owed at all. When I contacted the school, not only was their response very "tough sh*t" and dismissive, but their idea of help was to then forward me into collections. Note, they also didn't tell me thye were doing that. It was almost spiteful. Could you imagine being a broke kid just trying to maybe one day get a degree and having that being the kind of help you receive. Shame on you. What a pile of fail. Just gross.

It has been a headache working with GF to get my kid enrolled and signed up for the classes she…read moreneeds. We have had many issues. Their staff seems young, inexperienced, and the ball has been dropped many times. Be prepared to go around and around with issues you have that won't be addressed. We received hundreds of automated emails in the spring/summer about nonsense but the important ones are sent one time and you gotta find them in the mix of everything. So far I'm not satisfied with the school. CAP coaches aren't familiar with VA certification and only certified my daughter for 11 of the 12 credits and now she won't get the full benefit amount. I communicated with the cap coach many times and now we are being penalized because the assist director to student accounts says that the cap coaches are not trained in VA affairs. WTF?!!! Those I've reached out to don't seem to care and so I don't buy into their "be known" mission statement because to be known is to be valued as a person. Also be aware that a 3.0 student in an easy degree will be award the same as a 4.0 student in a harder degree such as nursing or engineering because well the easy degrees also need to award money and the bar is lower for the achievers in this group is what I was told. What a slap in the face to get the same amount.

I ended up with 2 associates degrees, associate of science in Business Administration and Associate of Arts-Oregon Transfer. I think the education I got was well rounded. The employees are friendly, the services offered are extensive and the instructors are involved with their students. There is a walking path that goes around the campus, fields for sports balls playing. Their automotive school is large and offers actual car repair services (as a means to educate their students).

We moved to Portland from the Netherlands, where he did little or nothing, and I am so happy to see him enjoying school, making new friends (whom I all like when I meet them), attending the Iron Chef Wednesday lunches, and thinking about his future and what he really wants to do with his life. When we attended the parent/teacher conferences together in October, he received one compliment after another from his teachers. Already encouraged by Ms. Chapman, the Principal, who answered my emails personally, and the really nice staff at LHS, who helped with documents and requirements for the IB and regular high school attendance, I realized that in real terms LHS has meant so much more for us. It was the base from which we chose our home and has helped determine our location and views on Portland. We like, no make that love, weird!!! Thank you Lincoln and thank you Stumptown.

I have attended Maitripa's Thursday night teachings with Yangsi Rinpoche, participated in their…read moreDiscovering Buddhism Series, attended Sunday morning meditation, and just attended their conflict resolution workshop that is one of the best workshops I've taken part in during my 13-year stay in Portland. The Maitripa community members are wonderful, inviting, and helpful people. The content of the public programs have proven very useful in social work within underserved communities. In other Buddhist communities, I have felt pushed and judged. I have felt nothing but comfort and acceptance at Maitripa. It is refuge in every sense of the word. I look forward to more involvement and participation at the College, and I encourage others who are curious to open their hearts and minds to all of the jewels Maitripa has to offer.

This young college has developed into a phenomenal resource and learning community for students…read moreseeking to start or further their education in compassion, service and meditation through the lens of a time tested Buddhist lineage. This college also draws talented individuals for events year after year, including HH The Dalai Lama just this past spring. Though it has a few kinks to smooth out as it grows, this college deserves a more accurate review: FACT CHECK: 1. Maitripa college is not so simply "un-accredited" as in another review. It is authorized through the state of Oregon to give Master's Degrees, and its involved in the multi-year process of moving toward full "regional" accreditation, (there is no such thing as "National") which will then allow students to apply for federal grants, federal student loans etc. They do offer very significant scholarships to assist students in the meantime. There is much value in this degree, and the multiple references to the college being "un-accredited" are somewhat misleading. If you are considering going to Maitripa for a Masters, then onward for another degree (Ph.d) or certification, as them if the Maitripa credits will transfer. Its highly likely they will. As stated on their website: "Maitripa Institute received legal authority in July 2008 from the State of Oregon to offer graduate degrees in Buddhist Studies. This approval means that Maitripa is now a College, and that its program courses are available for college credit. Maitripa is currently offering a Master of Arts degree in Buddhist Studies and a Masters of Divinity (MDiv) degree. This achievement is the first step towards regional accreditation." 2. The other warning that "these folks are missionaries" is not accurate from my experiences as a student over the last 3+ years, and surely this must have been based on a small sample audience that reviewer interacted with. Some people react differently to religious and spiritual teachers and teachings, and can often make things weird, with attempts to proselytize despite the fact that this tradition specifically instructs students against such behavior. Neither I, nor my friends have experienced a missionary vibe overall when taking classes or attending events at Maitripa. I have indeed experienced that type of environment of conversion before, but not so far at Maitripa. 3. Maitripa is a school based on Mahayana Buddhism: Mahayana philosophy, mediation, service, logic, and debate are the primary focus of the courses. They are not offering degrees in comparative religion, though some dialogue is always welcome in that area. Though "comparative thought" is certainly valued, is not the core focus of most classes, and those classes are not advertised as such, to my knowledge. However, the events have included teachers and professionals from diverse backgrounds, coming to share their expertise and opinions, and engage in constructive dialogue. These guests and teachers have included: neuroscientists, environmentalists, writers, psychologists and more... Maitripa's core is Mahayana Buddhism, but it is certainly open and engaged with the wider religious, scientific and academic communities. As for the online program, I believe it has been partially put on hold (I just checked the website), though I would confirm that directly with the college.
